OF TOM PETTY OUT JUNE 21
TRIBUTE ALBUM FEATURES DOLLY PARTON, DIERKS BENTLEY, GEORGE STRAIT, LUKE COMBS, WILLIE NELSON, WYNONNA JUDD, LAINEY WILSON, HEARTBREAKERS’ MIKE CAMPBELL & BENMONT TENCH AND MORE

April 26, 2024—Chris Stapleton’s take on Tom Petty’s “
I Should Have Known It,” from the forthcoming Petty Country: A Country Music Celebration of Tom Petty, debuts today with an accompanying audio video that features vintage photos of Petty—watch/share HERE.
The track originally appeared on Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers’ 2010 album, Mojo, and again on the late rocker’s 2019 posthumous greatest hits album, The Best of Everything. Beloved by fans, “I Should Have Known It” became one of the most enduring live songs amongst Petty’s more recent material.
The new track comes ahead of Petty Country: A Country Music Celebration of Tom Petty, the country tribute album lovingly curated by some of the late rocker’s closest friends and collaborators. It’s set for release on June 21 via Big Machine Records in partnership with the Tom Petty Estate and is available to pre-order HERE.
“I Should Have Known It” arrives on the heels of “Southern Accents,” reimagined by Petty’s friend and fellow Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Dolly Parton. The beautifully intimate version of what Petty considered to be one of the best songs he ever wrote has taken on a new life in the world of country music—watch the video directed by Trey Fanjoy, featuring poignant home videos and professional footage of Petty throughout his life, HEREDierks Bentley’s take on the Petty classic, “American Girl,” premiered as Bentley’s highest charting single upon launch—listen/share HERE. The track is currently climbing through the Top 35 on Country radio.
Executive produced by Petty’s close confidant, Grammy award-winner George Drakoulias (Barbie, The Black Crowes, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers), with Randall Poster (Killers of the Flower MoonSkyfall, Wes Anderson) and Scott Borchetta (Big Machine), Petty Country finds some of the most lauded voices in country music exploring the extensive Petty catalog and putting their own personal touches on some of his greatest hits. Highlights include a handful of songs by Petty’s longtime friends and collaborators, such as George StraitSteve EarleWillie Nelson with Lukas Nelson, bluegrass pioneer Marty Stuart and The Heartbreakers’ Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench. Contemporary country superstars Luke Combs, Chris Stapleton, Wynonna Judd, Carly PearceLady A, Margo PriceRhiannon Giddens—who most recently played banjo and viola on Beyoncé’s “Texas Hold ‘Em”—Thomas Rhett and Lainey Wilson pay tribute to the late rocker with their own spin on fan favorites. See below for a complete track list for Petty Country.
Tom Petty, albeit widely known for his rocker grit and California anthems, is often credited as contemporary country music’s biggest rock influence. A Gainesville, Florida native, Petty straddled the American coasts, leaving his native Florida for his adopted home of Los Angeles, while keeping one foot firmly rooted in the south. The region’s influence can be heard throughout Petty’s discography, with lyrics about growing up in the south paired with his famous airtight melodies and rough vocal character that defines the state of country music today.
In celebration of the new music, the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum will feature archival artifacts seen in the “Southern Accents” music video in June as an extension of their acclaimed “Western Edge” exhibit. The exhibit will showcase select items from Petty’s career that highlight his western edge such as tour assets from his 2001 Way Out West tour, an iconic Nudie suit inspired “Planets” blazer worn famously during his 1985 Southern Accents tour, “Southern Accents” handwritten song lyrics, western style wardrobe pieces worn on and off stage and Petty’s Gretsch 6130 Roundup Western electric guitar.
Petty’s deep roots in country music saw collaborations and long-lasting friendships with a number of the genre’s greatest artists, including Carl Perkins (Petty inducted Perkins into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame), Johnny Cash (The Heartbreakers were the backing band on Cash’s Unchained), June Carter Cash, Marty Stuart, John Prine, Dolly Parton, Tammy Wynette, George Strait, Hank Williams Jr. and Willie Nelson. Today, country songwriters consistently reference their love and admiration for Petty, and in many ways, how Petty’s influence shaped their own sound.
Over his 40-year career, Tom Petty became one of the biggest cultural icons in the world. In addition to the 13 studio albums he made with the Heartbreakers, Petty recorded 3 solo albums, including the acclaimed Full Moon Fever and Wildflowers. Petty was also a member of the supergroup, Traveling Wilburys, and in the pre-Heartbreakers band, Mudcrutch. Hailed as one of the greatest rock artists of all time, Pettys list of achievements include: multiple Grammy Award winner, 80+ million records sold, and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee. Tom Petty passed away in 2017 shortly after completing his 40th anniversary tour, but his music continues to reach fans, both new and old, around the world today.

Dr. John shares hard-won wisdom on new single "Sleeping Dogs Best Left Alone," out today

Check out new music from the late great Dr. John and learn more about his forthcoming posthumous album coming this fall..Robert Kinsler

Dr. John Shares Hard-Won Wisdom on New Single

“Sleeping Dogs Best Left Alone,” Out Now

Final Studio Album Things Happen That Way

Set for Release September 23, 2022

June 10. 2022– Legendary musician Malcolm John “Mac” Rebennack Jr – known to music fans the world over as Dr. John – packed a lot of living into his 77 years, including a six-decade run as one of the most original, distinctive, and influential voices to ever come out of New Orleans. He was in the midst of recording a new studio album and planning future projects when his life was suddenly cut short in 2019.

Now, three years after his untimely passing, in a world complicated by COVID-19,
Things Happen That Way will see the light of day. The album, which features three brand new original compositions, a mesmerizing reworking of Dr. John’s 1968 classic “I Walk on Guilded Splinters, and new interpretations of songs by Willie Nelson, Cowboy Jack Clement, Hank Williams, and the Traveling Wilburys will be released on September 23. The album is available for pre-order HERE.

Today, a new, original song, “Sleeping Dogs Best Left Alone,” written by Rebennack with Shane Theriot, is released.

Listen to it HERE.

The lyrics impart some hard-won wisdom drawn from Rebennack’s own experiences, delivered in his trademark growl:

Don’t try and go backwards,

the hand's been already dealt

Don’t try and laugh at the same old jokes,

pain that’s already felt

Don’t try and drive with one eye closed,

one tire in the ditch

Walk around with your head in the sand,

sayin’ life ain’t nuthin’ but a bitch

What’s seen is seen

And what’s heard is heard

Done is done in this great big world

One thing I know is life has shown

Sleeping dogs best left alone

Things Happen That Way marks the fulfillment of a longtime goal of the six-time GRAMMY-winning singer/songwriter/pianist and Rock & Roll Hall of Famer, who first began plotting a country-inspired album decades ago. In bringing his album’s songs to life, Dr. John drew on a lineup of musicians befitting of a universally beloved luminary. Along with an elite cadre of New Orleans session players, the album’s personnel include icons Willie Nelson and Aaron Neville, and rising stars Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real

Karla R. Pratt, Dr. John’s daughter and the album’s executive producer, spoke with Rolling Stone’s David Browne about what inspired Rebennack’s choice of cover songs, calling them “’a musical tip of the hat to the greats who preceded him,’ like Williams, Cash, and Nelson.”

“Years ago he talked about how hip Hank Williams was,” she told Browne. “He loved how simple yet emotionally complex Hank’s songs are, that they have a hook with a twist. For this album inspired by listening to the Louisiana Hayride [radio show] and icons of country and western, he was excited to do songs in a way that evokes emotion that sticks with you long after one of the songs — done his soulful way — is played.”

Michael Gurley's Ultrasound to perform at The Art Boutiki in San Jose on April 30

Written by Robert Kinsler

Michael Gurley at The Coach
House in San Juan Capistrano, CA
in April 2018.

With the release of their dazzling commercial debut Puzzle in 1992, Dada was rightly celebrated as a groundbreaking band that blended the best of alternative, melodic and psychedelic rock music stylings into an intoxicating and timeless sound. Singer-guitarist Michael Gurley, singer-bassist Joie Calio and singer-drummer Phil Leavitt went on to release a string of subsequent masterworks that equaled the ambition and sonic reach of their debut including American Highway Flower (1994), El Subliminoso (1996), Dada (1998) and How To Be Found (2004).

Now Gurley is back with his aptly-named project Michael Gurley's Ultrasound, and the outfit is ready to emerge in a post-pandemic world in support of the 2020 full-length gem Ultrasound. Because Ultrasound was released during the height of the global COVID-19 health crisis, Gurley was unable to tour in support of the album. The good news is that Gurley will bring his live show to the Art Boutiki in San Jose, CA on April 30.

"We did one show in Oceanside that was spur of the moment," Gurley recalled in a recent phone interview. "When the show came around (on Feb. 25, 2022), it was incredible. It was so much fun to play again."

Michael Gurley performing with Kiefer Sutherland at the Belly Up in May 2017.

Between 2014 and 2019, Gurley kept busy as a member of Kiefer Sutherland's band, including co-writing a track with the famed singer-songwriter/actor. During that time, Gurley and his wife Stacey also welcomed their son Harrison into the world. This writer asked Gurley if he had named his son after a certain member of The Beatles: "(It was) a name my wife really loved. He wasn't named after George Harrison, but it didn't hurt."

During the global pandemic when the world shut down, full-time musicians couldn't tour.

The artwork for the album "Ultrasound."

"When COVID happened, I couldn't play shows. Since COVID started (in early 2020), I have written more than 100 songs." In addition to the official release of Ultrasound in late 2020, Gurley has now completed a country music-aimed album (the title and release date are yet to be announced).

In addition to his top tier talents as a lead vocalist and songwriter, Gurley is a bona fide guitar master. In fact, one of the highlights on his album Ultrasound is "I Love Your Guitar," an infectious rocker that showcases Gurley's signature fretwork.

"The guitar has done so much for me. I started playing when I was seven…as you get older you appreciate it as a vocation and a hobby. The older I get the more appreciative I am," Gurley said of his love of the instrument.

Whether listening to Ultrasound or seeing Gurley in concert, it's obvious he has been influenced by a vast and diverse array of artists.

"I’ll spend a month on Chopin (composer Frédéric Chopin), and listen to him every night. Then a month on early AC/DC, then go back to the Rolling Stones, then a month on Jimi Hendrix…You learn so much. Always some formula to the greatness and mystery. (The song) 'I Had A Dream Last Night That I Had A Dream' is very ‘60s. I had a Kinks-like riff, fast tempo and right in the middle it goes into a different feel. I go into a half-time, Burt Bacharach feel, replete with major seventh chords and flugelhorn, then right back into the Kinks feel."

Completed during COVID, Ultrasound took 2-1/2 years to complete, with Gurley producing specific tracks with Shane Soloski and others with Scott Gordon. Additional contributions on the disc included Brian MacLeod (Sheryl Crow) on drums, Sean Hurley on bass (John Mayer), and Victor Indrizzo (Beck, Chris Cornell, Willie Nelson) on drums.

"I did it in a recording studio  I wanted that feel," Gurley said. "I think the record is more positive than some of my other projects…I didn’t want to make a downer record."

'Mackintosh and TJ,' Roy Rogers final film appearance - film coming to Blu-ray & DVD on May 18

I wanted to make sure fans of westerns, the late silver screen star Roy Rogers and the music of Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson saw this news...Robert Kinsler

Newly Restored 4K Edition Of Mackintosh and T.J. Starring The Legendary Roy Rogers In His Final Film Appearance Coming May 18, 2021
Featuring music by Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson, the American Western
is set for debut on Blu-ray and DVD via Verdugo Entertainment and MVD

On Tuesday, May 18, 2021, Verdugo Entertainment will launch the newly restored 4K version of the 1975 classic
Mackintosh and T.J. on Blu-ray and DVD. The modern day American western stars the legendary “King of the Cowboys” Roy Rogersin his final feature film appearance.

Distributed by Verdugo Entertainment and MVD Entertainment Group, the film is also streaming now on Amazon Prime, Vudu, You Tube and Google Play.

Mackintosh and T.J. is described as “a moving photo album of ranch life in Texas in the mid-1970s.” Screenwriter Paul Savage, most known for his TV work in Wagon Train, Big Valley, and Gunsmoke, penned the film specifically with Roy Rogers in mind. The film is one of the few in which Roy Rogers did not play himself, portraying instead the title character of Mackintosh, a veteran ranch hand.

In the film, wandering through rural Texas ranch country, Mackintosh becomes a father figure for the young and homeless T.J. (Clay O’Brien) and helps him to stay on track. They land jobs on the ranch of Jim Webster, where Mackintosh proves his skills as a horse tamer. When a murder takes place, Mackintosh is framed which leads to dramatic events.

The film was restored to 4K from the original 35MM camera negative, including audio cleanup and went through a color correction process to match the original film. Colorist Sean Lawrence comments, “Our color correction approach was to try and be as true to the original intention and not impose modern color correction aesthetics. Were the filmmakers alive to see it, we would want them to feel that this matched their original vision.”

Mackintosh and TJ’s original score is by Waylon Jennings and the soundtrack features songs by Jennings and country music icon Willie Nelson.

The film was recently spotlighted in the What is a Western? Interview Series: Ranching, Rodeo and Roy Rogers produced by The Autry Museum and featuring a lively discussion with rodeo world champion Larry Mahan (who also has a role in the movie), and film historians C. Courtney Joyner and Stuart Rosebrook. The panelists discuss the realistic portrayal of 20th century rodeo and ranching life in movies, particularly in Roy Rogers’ final film, and explore the significance of the Western genre and the ways in which the movies shape our understanding of the American West.

Watch the full episode here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fg7MaCOzEe4

“It isn’t a Roy Rogers movie, it’s a wonderful movie that Roy Rogers is in that reflects quite a bit of 1970’s sensibility,” says Joyner.

“Roy Rogers’ character Mackintosh seems to be an amalgamation of some of those characters we saw in Junior Bonner, J W Coop, The Honkers - men out of time, men who have values, who still follow the ‘Code of The West.’ So that message came across very strong,” comments Rosebrook.

“Producer Tim Penland wanted to do older style Westerns,” explains Mahan. “He had quite an extensive Christian background, and he wanted to get away from what he saw in Westerns, as there was too much violence, and he wanted to do something that was more in line with his values.”

  • Lone Pine Cast Reunion with Clay O’Brien, Andrew Robinson and Larry Mahan
