New Music: The Church, Paul Rodgers, Genya Ravan, The Doors

New releases from acclaimed Australia legends The Church, singer-songwriter great Paul Rodgers, pioneering songstress Genya Ravan and Rock and Roll Hall of Famers The Doors are worth adding to your music library.

Tell me more: While The Hypnogogue is the 26th album release from The Church, it marks the band's first-ever concept album (a lyrically and sonically detailed dystopian tale set in 2054). The newly-issued deluxe edition of the album expands the initial February 2023 standard version of the LP with six additional tracks. The Hypnogogue (Deluxe) is truly an ambitious and stellar disc that finds singer-songwriter/bassist Steve Kilbey and company using their unique blend of modern, alternative, Neo-psychedelic and progressive rock styles to immerse the listener in the sumptuous journey across 19 tracks. They hypnotic rocker "C'est La Vie," shimmering "I Think I Knew," reflective title track, melodic "Aerodome" and luxurious "Realm of Minor Angels" (the latter is among the previously-unissued cuts on the expanded release) are among the immediately captivating tracks on the deluxe edition. More experimental tracks (notably "Succulent," "Antartica," "Second Bridge" and "A Strange Past") reward discerning listeners on repeated listens. The band's fall U.S. tour begins on Sept 28 in Seattle and includes upcoming dates in Southern California, Arizona and New Mexico; concertgoers who come out to the shows can also pick up a The Hypnogogue companion audio CD called Eros Zeta and the Perfumed Guitars which features 15 brand new songs and will only be available at the merch table on the band's U.S. fall tour. Information: thechurchband.net.

Tell me more: One of rock's all-time great talents, Paul Rodgers (Free, Bad Company, The Firm, Queen + Paul Rodgers) is back with Midnight Rose. The British-Canadian singer-songwriter/multi-instrumentalist's first new solo album since 1999's Electric, the eight-track Midnight Rose showcases that Rodgers voice remains a top-flight wonder at age 73. Rodgers' signature lead vocals shine on the blues-rock opener "Coming Home," the breezy folk-swept title track, Bad Company-styled rockers "Living It Up" and "Take Love," dazzling Renaissance mining "Dance In The Sun," affecting "Highway Robber" and ambitious closer "Melting," the latter casting a strong light on Rodgers' nuanced and artful touch as the song burgeons from a bluesy ballad into a bona fide rocker. Tell me more: Groundbreaking rock songstress Genya Ravan's incredible legacy is celebrated via two terrific reissues available now via Bob Frank Distribution (BFD). Armed with a powerful soprano, Ravan's self-produced solo albums Urban Desire (1978) and its follow-up ...And I Mean It (1979) showcase her mighty vocals and shining blues-harp playing. The reissues also serve as the perfect introduction to an artist who deserves more recognition. Born Genyusha Zelkowitz in Poland in 1940, Ravan survived the Holocaust. In America, she forged a path in the male-dominated music industry — including forming the first all-woman rock band (Goldie & The Gingerbreads) in 1963 and subsequently one of the first rock 'n' roll horn bands (Ten Wheel Drive) in 1969.  Urban Desire opens with the jubilant rocker "Jerry's Pigeons," with subsequent standouts on the album including the rollicking blues rock nugget "The Knight Ain't Long Enough," acoustic foray "Do It Just For Me," scorching take on The Supremes' "Back In My Arms Again" and rousing "Aye Co'lorado," the latter a wonderful duet with Lou Reed. 

...And I Mean It features an equally strong track listing, which includes gems like the heavy blues sortie "Pedal To The Metal," punkish "It's Me," infectious New Wave-tinged "Love Isn't Love," genre-smashing rocker "I'm Wired, Wired, Wired" and her poignant duet with Ian Hunter ("Junkman"). Tell me more: Anytime fans get treated to a new release featuring The Doors there is reason for celebration. The release of the Live at the Matrix, 1967 is truly one of the great audio titles of 2023; the limited edition 3CD box set features the complete and original recordings captured during the band's five-night engagement in March 1967 at the small San Francisco nightclub known as The Matrix. The recordings featured on Live at the Matrix, 1967 were taken from the first-generation 7-inch reels that captured singer Jim Morrison, guitarist Robby Krieger, keyboardist Ray Manzarek and drummer John Densmore just prior to their explosive emergence as one of the most successful and important rock bands of the late 1960s. Standout performances abound across the sets recorded by Peter Abram between March 7-11, 1967 that are featured on the box set. The band's first set on March 7, 1967 features a freewheeling and dynamic version of "Back Door Man," a previously unreleased take on the psychedelic rocker "My Eyes Have Seen You," a mesmerizing run through the Miles Davis-penned instrumental "All Blues" and potent 12-minute take on the classic "When The Music's Over." There are so many incredible moments to be heard across the three discs; a blues-drenched take on Willie Dixon's "Close To You," fiery version of the John Lee Hooker classic "Crawling King Snake" enhanced by Krieger's signature guitar work, the wistful "I Can't See Your Face In My Mind," Baroque pop-meets-blues ballad "The Crystal Ship," several powerful versions of "Break On Through (To The Other Side)" and a otherworldly performance of "Light My Fire" are just a few of the stellar cuts to be heard. Detailed liner notes written by Joel Selvin provide a comprehensive look at the inspired performances and what led The Doors to journey to San Francisco to appear at The Matrix just prior to their impending stardom. R.E.M.'s long out-of-print albums 'Around the Sun' and 'Collapse Into Now' available on vinyl

The recent release of R.E.M.'s long out-of-print titles Around the Sun (2004) and Collapse Into Now (2011) on vinyl by Craft Recordings is the perfect opportunity to rediscover two outstanding full-length classics from the beloved Athens, Georgia-spawned band's second half of their incredible career.

Both casual and hardcore fans of R.E.M. will appreciate how amazing the albums sound (both albums were cut by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio and were pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Memphis Records Pressing). Additionally, vinyl aficionados can find limited editions exclusively at REMHQ.com; the 2-LP Around the Sun is available on an Opaque White color variant, while the 1-LP Collapse Into Now can be found in Milky Clear vinyl. Following the release of their acclaimed albums Up (1998) and Reveal (2001), R.E.M.'s 13th LP Around the Sun was released in the wake of the 9/11 attacks and the Iraq War; the 13-track album finds R.E.M. (singer Michael Stipe, guitarist Peter Buck, bassist Mike Mills and drummer Bill Rieflin) tackling a troubled world with musical and literate depth. The album shines via the glorious opener "Leaving New York" (the single is bolstered by a sumptuous chorus), ambitious electronica-tinged "Electron Blue," wistful piano-anchored "Make It All Okay," luxurious "I Wanted To Be Wrong," soaring "Wanderlust" and longing "Around the Sun." Around the Sun topped the album charts in the UK, Sweden and Germany, among other territories, and landed at No. 13 on the Billboard 200.

Following the release of their 14th album Accelerate in 2008, the members of R.E.M. collectively decided to record their final album, Collapse Into Now. Produced by Jacknife Lee (The Cars, U2, Snow Patrol), the album was recorded between November 2009 and September 2010 in Berlin, New Orleans and Nashville. At the time of its release, Mills noted: "It's more of a personal record than a political one. Current events do come into our mind when we write, but the themes here are more universal." The purposeful track listing opens with the confessional rocker "Discoverer," one of Stipe's only autobiographical songs (the track includes guest vocals from Patti Smith). Early highlights abound on the 12-track masterwork; my favorites include the propulsive rocker "All The Best" (whose lyrics foreshadow R.E.M. disbanding in September 2011), the undeniably ravishing “Überlin,” and driving melody-showered gem "It Happened Today" featuring guest vocals by Eddie Vedder and The Hidden Cameras' Joel Gibb. Standouts on the last half of the album include the speedy "Mine Smell Like Honey," freewheeling rocker "Alligator_Aviator_Autopilot_Antimatter," and alluring "Me, Marlon Brando, Marlon Brando and I."

NASHVILLE – June 14, 2017 – The 2017 Summer NAMM Show is set to welcome a variety of music legends as it returns to Nashville’s Music City Center, July 13-15. The annual summer gathering of the music product, pro audio and entertainment tech community brings together top brands, professional development sessions and an opportunity to network with peers, with Music City as the backdrop.
 
This year’s show will welcome a variety of legendary performers,including a special performance from country music pioneer and multi-Grammy® award winner, Charley Pride, who will release his new album, Music in My Heart, July 7. For the past 50 years, Pride has enjoyed one of the most successful careers in country music and is credited with helping to break color barriers within the genre. A true living legend, he has sold tens of millions of records worldwide with his large repertoire of hits. Pride counts three Grammys among his accolades, and 36 chart-topping country hits, including “Kiss An Angel Good Morning,” a massive #1 crossover hit that sold over a million singles and helped Pride land the Country Music Association’s “Entertainer of the Year” award in 1971 and the “Top Male Vocalist” awards of 1971 and 1972.

Pride continues to perform concerts worldwide and will perform on Saturday, July 15 at 1 p.m. on the NAMM Reverb Stage on the Terrace as part of the show’s Music Industry Day. Music Industry Day is open to the public and welcomes music professionals, students, academics and others involved in the creation and production of music to The Summer NAMM Show.
 
Other notable events during The Summer NAMM Show include the previously announced American Eagle Awards, happening Thursday, July 13 at 6:00 p.m. in the Grand Ballroom of Music City Center. Presented by the National Music Council with support from The NAMM Foundation, the evening event will honor songstress Crystal Gayle, singer, songwriter and poet Patti Smith, and comic, actor, writer, musician and creators' rights activist Harry Shearer. The highly prestigious awards are presented each year in recognition of long-term contributions to American musical culture and heritage, the importance of music education for all children, and the need to protect creators’ rights both locally and internationally. Lots of news to share...

I saw this on Yahoo! today and had to share. How sad that it took the death of Prince earlier this year to set Billboard ablaze...

The news came out a while back, but a timely reminder is in order. U2's iNNOCENCE + eXPERIENCE Live In Paris arrives on Blu-ray (you can see the cover of the Blu-ray immediately below), DVD and digital download on Friday, June 10.


Directed by Hamish Hamilton, the 2.5 hour film features the Irish band performing 30 tracks including a guest performance by Eagles of Death Metal. Bonus content on deluxe formats features a Patti Smith performance as well as Gavin Friday's guide to "Cedarwood Road," behind-the-scenes with Hamilton, and multiple on-stage tour films and music videos.

U2's iNNOCENCE + eXPERIENCE Tour kicked off in Vancouver, Canada in May 2015. I got to catch one of the tour's first concert dates in Phoenix on May 22, 2015 (you can read my review of the concert here). The upcoming DVD/Blu-ray release features a number of great songs, including recent material such as "Song for Someone," "Cedarwood Road" and the beautiful "Every Breaking Wave." Of course, U2 also covers classics such as "Sunday Bloody Sunday," "Until The End of the World," "Beautiful Day" and "I Will Follow."

Sights and Sounds: Jimi Hendrix, Two Door Cinema Club, The Human Rights Concerts, Lou Reed, Mogwai

Lots of things to share today. I want to start off reminding everybody to tune in tonight and watch PBS' “American Masters” series which offers an outstanding biography of Jimi Hendrix titled Hear My Train a Comin'. Make sure to check out my post that ran earlier this week that features my review of the two-hour documentary. It's truly worth watching.

Because I was reviewing Sarah Brightman on Saturday night, I was unable to catch Two Door Cinema Club at The Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. Read George A. Paul's review of that show here. Sounds like I missed a great concert!

Today marks the release of Released: The Human Rights Concerts 1986-1998, an ambitious collection I featured in an in-depth post last month. There is a mini-review on the Pop Candy blog featured on the USA Today site. Click here to view that. I hope to see and review the collection soon. As I noted in my earlier post, I caught one of the initial shows in Inglewood, California in June 1986 and it remains one of my best concert-going experiences!

MOGWAI ANNOUNCE NORTH AMERICAN TOUR NEW ALBUM, RAVE TAPES, SET FOR JAN. 21 RELEASE VIA SUB POP

Mogwai, who recently announced the release of their eighth studio album, Rave Tapes, on Jan. 21 via Sub Pop, have confirmed an extensive Spring tour of North America (dates listed below). The Scottish quintet gave fans an early listen to music from Rave Tapes last week, streaming the single “Remurdered” via Sub Pop’s Soundcloud (http://soundcloud.com/subpop/mogwai-remurdered/s-2gdM2).  Pitchfork described the single as “night shivers coupled with blocky electronics,” adding that the track “heads down a mazy path while the volume gradually increases, ultimately peaking in a mesh of criss-crossing synthetic textures.” Rave Tapes was recorded over the summer in the band’s Castle of Doom studio in Glasgow and reunites the band with Hardcore Will Never Die But You Will Co-Producer Paul Savage. Mogwai previously announced two live dates for late 2013: a Nov. 28 performance at Junction in Cambridge, UK and a slot on All Tomorrow’s Parties “End of an Era” on Dec. 1 at Pontins Holiday Park in the UK. The band returns to the road in late January for a short European trek (dates listed below). In related news, Mogwai recently scored the French supernatural thriller, Les Revanants, the most popular TV series in Canal + history. Lady Antebellum Own the Night World Tour set for release on December 4, 2012

Eagle Rock Entertainment, the world’s leader in visual music, is proud to announce the DVD, Blu-ray, and Digital Video release of Lady Antebellum Own The Night World Tour on December 4, 2012, a spectacular concert by country music’s reigning CMA and ACM Vocal Group Of The Year. Filmed in June of 2012, the concert features the Nashville-based band—Hillary Scott, Charles Kelley and Dave Haywood—complete with documentary footage of the tour and seven additional bonus tracks.
Lady Antebellum’s headlining tour traveled across the US, Canada, Europe and Australia, where the Grammy winning trio was welcomed by over one million fans in 11 countries on three continents. Lady A sold out shows in top markets including Los Angeles, Chicago, two nights in New York City, Toronto, London, three nights at Sydney’s Opera House and even had a chance to open a sold out show at London’s Hard Rock Calling for one of their idols Bruce Springsteen.

The concept for the stage was simply sketched out on a paper plate while out on tour the summer of 2011 and evolved into one of the trio’s proudest accomplishments as a band.

Before taking the show overseas, Lady Antebellum celebrated the final weekend of the North American leg by documenting the show from Little Rock, AR.

The 90-minute performance includes #1 hits “I Run To You,” “We Owned The Night,” “American Honey,” “Just A Kiss,” “Our Kind of Love,” and, of course, the greatest selling country single of all time, “Need You Now.” Among the performances are documentary excerpts depicting their lives as songwriters, musicians, and close friends.

According to Variety, “Lady Antebellum certainly pushes all the right buttons in concert: backdrops dominated by shooting stars and bucolic scenery, a careful placement of the hits--but there's more to their appeal than just that. Their palette is broader, more forcefully colored than most of their peers, and the soulfulness that results is unmistakable.”

Lady Antebellum is currently nominated for “Vocal Group of the Year” and “Album of the Year” for OWN THE NIGHT at the 46th Annual CMA Awards. OWN THE NIGHT debuted at the number one position on Billboard’s Top 200 and has spawned two number one hits “We Owned The Night” and “Just A Kiss.” The trio has sold over 11 million albums across the globe, scored seven GRAMMY Awards and tallied six number one hits.

Patti Smith Live At Montreux 2005 will be the singer-songwriter's first-ever live DVD release

On November 13, Eagle Rock Entertainment will release Live At Montreux 2005 by Patti Smith on DVD, Blu-ray, and Digital Video.
Smith’s vibrant live performance – a fervent intermingle of visual artistry, musical exploration, spoken word, and Rock ‘N’ Roll – is beautifully captured on Live At Montreux 2005 via DTS Surround Sound, Dolby Digital 5.1, and Dolby Digital Stereo. This Montreux concert was filmed in the midst of their 2005 tour in support of the 2004 album Trampin’. This is the first ever live video release by Patti Smith and includes classic tracks such as “Because The Night,” “Dancing Barefoot,” “People Have The Power,” “Redondo Beach,” “25th Floor,” and many more. In addition, they also serenade the legacy of Bob Dylan, with a performance of “Like A Rolling Stone.”

Along with Patti Smith on vocals, guitar and clarinet, the band line-up includes original Patti Smith Group members Lenny Kaye (guitar & vocals) and Jay Dee Daugherty (drums), Tom Verlaine of Television on guitars and long standing band member Tony Shanahan on bass, keyboards and vocals.

“There’s something magical about seeing Montreux on our tour itinerary,” says Lenny Kaye. “Along with a sense of achievement in becoming part of its grand tradition, there’s an awareness of the many Those who have played here over the years, the tribute that must be paid, the higher level of artistic exploration and audience sophistication that enhances the possibilities for taking a performance one step further. We partake of a sense of communal belonging within the mandala that is human musical expression.”

Patti Smith was one of the key artists in the breakthrough of New York City punk rock. The 1975 debut album Horses was a landmark release, from her unique vocals and lyrics, to the strikingly androgynous cover art, shot by photographer Robert Mapplethorpe (Patti dons this exact outfit in the 2005 concert). Horses was a huge influence on the whole New Wave genre, and paved the way for 11 additional albums, as well as several published poetry collections.

Smith’s distinctive blend of rock, punk and poetry combined with her uncompromising style has ensured that she has remained a credible artist throughout her career, and continues to influence artists to this day.
