Following the release of their acclaimed albums Up (1998) and Reveal (2001), R.E.M.'s 13th LP Around the Sun was released in the wake of the 9/11 attacks and the Iraq War; the 13-track album finds R.E.M. (singer Michael Stipe, guitarist Peter Buck, bassist Mike Mills and drummer Bill Rieflin) tackling a troubled world with musical and literate depth. The album shines via the glorious opener "Leaving New York" (the single is bolstered by a sumptuous chorus), ambitious electronica-tinged "Electron Blue," wistful piano-anchored "Make It All Okay," luxurious "I Wanted To Be Wrong," soaring "Wanderlust" and longing "Around the Sun." Around the Sun topped the album charts in the UK, Sweden and Germany, among other territories, and landed at No. 13 on the Billboard 200.

Following the release of their 14th album Accelerate in 2008, the members of R.E.M. collectively decided to record their final album, Collapse Into Now. Produced by Jacknife Lee (The Cars, U2, Snow Patrol), the album was recorded between November 2009 and September 2010 in Berlin, New Orleans and Nashville. At the time of its release, Mills noted: "It's more of a personal record than a political one. Current events do come into our mind when we write, but the themes here are more universal." The purposeful track listing opens with the confessional rocker "Discoverer," one of Stipe's only autobiographical songs (the track includes guest vocals from Patti Smith). Early highlights abound on the 12-track masterwork; my favorites include the propulsive rocker "All The Best" (whose lyrics foreshadow R.E.M. disbanding in September 2011), the undeniably ravishing “Überlin,” and driving melody-showered gem "It Happened Today" featuring guest vocals by Eddie Vedder and The Hidden Cameras' Joel Gibb. Standouts on the last half of the album include the speedy "Mine Smell Like Honey," freewheeling rocker "Alligator_Aviator_Autopilot_Antimatter," and alluring "Me, Marlon Brando, Marlon Brando and I."

LOS ANGELES – JUNE 28, 2022 -- Celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, R.E.M.’s debut EP CHRONIC TOWN will be released for the first time ever as a standalone CD with extensive liner notes by the original producer Mitch Easter (Let’s Active).  It will be released in three different formats: CD, Picture Disc, and Cassette on August 19, 2022 via I.R.S./UMe and can be preordered here. Featuring such adored classics in the band’s repertoire as “Gardening At Night,” “Wolves, Lower,” and “1,000,000,” the five-song EP, as Rolling Stone noted, “served notice that R.E.M. was an outfit to watch.” As a debut release, R.E.M.’s Chronic Town became an anomaly… a record that didn’t quite fit into the constraints of what was played on the radio.  So instead of trying to fit into a genre, R.E.M. helped create their own: College Rock. The follow-up to their breakthrough single “Radio Free Europe” which was released in 1981, Chronic Town served as the entry point to what would become one of Alternative Rock’s biggest bands.  “One might fancifully say that Chronic Town was the sound of an expedition, ready for anything, setting forth,” says Easter fondly about the EP.  “If R.E.M. ‘Radio Free Europe’ single was a signpost, the Chronic Town EP was the atlas."

Introducing their arpeggiated guitar playing, cryptic and often indecipherable lyrics, and radiant choruses that would soon emerge as signatures of the classic R.E.M. sound, Chronic Town is the sound of a restless band, chock-full of ideas, operating on a post-collegiate budget. Charmingly ragged and refreshingly immediate, it established the band indelibly upon impact. “Wolves, Lower” opens the EP with Michael Stipe’s trademark impressionistic and idiosyncratic lyrics, while Mike Mills’ rubbery bass lines and Peter Buck’s jangly Rickenbacker keeps Bill Berry’s unpredictable drumming in check. It’s this combination that would not only fuel the band for subsequent decades but make them equally as dependable as songsmiths. Serving as a template for ‘80s college jangle pop, “Gardening At Night” forged a style that combined heartily strummed rhythm guitars with a meandering bass line that proved to be a solid blueprint for college bands to come. Critically hailed both upon release and in retrospect, Chronic Town heralded “a great band planting their flag in the ground, a historic landmark that portended great things that actually came” (Stereogum). The Stranger praised “everything about the EP, from its gnomic, blue-tinted cover art, to its restlessly discursive music, to the fact that the two sides both had their own titles (‘Chronic Town’ and ‘Poster Torn’), was not only good on its own merits, but an excellent influence in favor of obscurantism and understatement.” Chronic Town’s impact and influence on the future of alternative music is uncontested and described by Magnet Magazine as “essentially a template for the entire indie-rock movement.”

R.E.M. announce 25th anniversary edition of seminal Out Of Time; new edition coming this fall via Concord Bicycle label

A quarter of a century after Out Of Time helped break alternative music into the American mainstream and turned R.E.M. into a worldwide phenomenon, the band have announced a special 25th Anniversary Edition, out November 18, 2016 via Concord Bicycle.

Out Of Time will be released in three different formats. The 2 CD Set will include a remastered version of the original album alongside demo versions of every album track, as well as demos for two non-album b-sides and a previously unreleased song. The 3 LP Set will include remastered vinyl versions of the original album and the demos. The 25th Anniversary Deluxe Edition of Out Of Time will include 4 discs, featuring the remastered album, demos, recordings from the band's performance at Mountain Stage in 1991 (a rarity for the time, as the band did not tour to promote 'Out Of Time'), and a Blu-Ray disc with hi-resolution audio and 5.1 Surround Sound versions of 'Out Of Time,' all of the music videos from the album, and the 1991 electronic press kit 'Time Piece,' featuring in-studio footage, exclusive performances and more. All versions will feature extensive liner notes by Annie Zaleski featuring interviews from all four band members and producers Scott Litt and John Keane. Full details below.

The demos, recorded at John Keane Studio in early 1990 and featured on all versions of the Out Of Time reissue, provide key insight into the band's creative process: from early instrumental passes to versions of "Losing My Religion" and "Texarkana" with different lyrics, and even a version of "Radio Song" that features a rare moment with drummer Bill Berry on lead vocals for a verse. While recording them, it was clear to Keane that R.E.M. were "at their peak in terms of creativity."

By 1991, R.E.M. (Bill Berry, Peter Buck, Mike Mills and Michael Stipe) had amassed a sizable following in the United States, but 'Out Of Time' brought the Athens, GA band unprecedented global recognition. It was the group's first album to top both US and UK charts, selling 12 million copies worldwide, and garnered 7 Grammy nominations, including wins for Best Alternative Music Album, Best Short Form Music Video ("Losing My Religion"), and Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal ("Losing My Religion").

Instant classic songs like "Losing My Religion," "Shiny Happy People," "Near Wild Heaven," and "Radio Song" broke new ground, artistically and commercially. Reviewing 'Out Of Time,' Rolling Stone simply said, "This may well be America's best rock & roll band." Earlier this year, Pitchfork called the album "arguably their most important record," while Time Magazine named 'Out Of Time' one of it's All-Time 100 Albums, saying it contains "ethereal beauty rarely heard on a rock record."

GRAMMY® Award-nominated, multiplatinum artist Florence + the Machine contributes a new track entitled “Wish That You Were Here” to Tim Burton’s Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. “Wish That You Were Here” stands out as a gorgeously hypnotic and bracing original composition from Florence + The Machine. With its cinematic overtones and expansive power, the track figures prominently serving as the end-title track for the film.

“‘Wish That You Were Here’ is a song about the idea that love is a journey and a risk,” says Florence Welch about the writing the song. “Having been on tour, I’ve lived in a sort of magical time bubble, where the days almost blend together. It’s amazing, but it comes at a cost — a cost of leaving the people you love behind for a year or two. You kind of feel like if you could sing a song into the wind, maybe the wind could take it to them in a way that you can’t with a text or a call. You just want to send your love in a different way, in a way to somehow reach the unreachable.”

Academy® Award-nominated and Golden Globe® Award-winning filmmaker Tim Burton personally collaborated with Florence on “Wish That You Were Here” for the film, which is based on the best-selling 2011 novel of the same name by Ransom Riggs. A massive fan of the book series and a longtime admirer of Burton’s work, Florence worked closely with the director in a collaborative effort to record the song in a way that truly evoked the film’s ideal.

“I've always been a huge fan of Tim Burton’s. We have a very similar sensibility. It’s the kind of dark, dark romance of his work — so beautiful and whimsical, but with an element of darkness to it. That’s something that I always try and achieve in my work, too. 

I knew we would get along really well working together and we did. I feel like we’re coming from a similar place of quite frantic imaginations trying to get the words out before the pictures in our heads disappear. He feels like a kindred spirit,” says Welch.

“I actually sent him a note about six years ago. I was in Australia on tour there for the first time and visited an exhibition of all his work. I wanted to leave him a message and all I had on me was an x-ray of my hand, as I had just broken my finger. So I wrote on the x-ray and gave it to the gallery to pass on and never knew if he got it. When we met for the first time, he told me it’s been hanging up in his office ever since.”

WARNER BROS. RECORDS TO RELEASE SOUNDTRACK TO UPCOMING FILM DEEPWATER HORIZON ON SEPTEMBER 23^rd

DEEPWATER HORIZON WILL BE RELEASED IN THEATRES FROM LIONGATE’S SUMMIT ENTERTAINMENT LABEL ON SEPTEMBER 30^TH

CLARK TO PERFORM “TAKE ME DOWN” ON ABC’S JIMMY KIMMEL LIVE ON OCTOBER 6^TH

Gary Clark Jr. has written an original new song, “Take Me Down,” which will be featured in the upcoming and highly anticipated film Deepwater Horizon from Lionsgate’s Summit Entertainment label, as well as on the movie’s original soundtrack.  Deepwater Horizon Original Motion Picture Soundtrack – Music by Steve Jablonsky Featuring an Original Song by Gary Clark Jr., also features an original stirring score by Steve Jablonsky (The Transformers franchise, Lone Survivor) and will be released by Warner Bros. Records on September 23^rd.

Deepwater Horizon, which hits theaters on September 30th, is directed by Peter Berg (Lone Survivor) and stars Mark Wahlberg, Kurt Russell, John Malkovich, Gina Rodriguez, Dylan O’Brien, and Kate Hudson. It tells the story of how on April 20, 2010, one of the world’s largest manmade disasters occurred on the Deepwater Horizon in the Gulf of Mexico. The story honors the brave men and women whose heroism would save many on board, and change everyone’s lives forever.

“Take Me Down” displays the rootsier, more intimate side of Clark’s singer/songwriter oeuvre. Clark continues to broaden his musical pallet with this achingly beautiful and melodic track. “Take Me Down” is a departure from his usual blistering blues, rock & soul compositions on albums Blak and Blu and The Story of Sonny Boy Slim. “Take Me Down” was produced by Clark and Mark Corben exclusively for Deepwater Horizon. The track features Clark on all vocals, acoustic guitar, harmonica and cinematic electric slide guitar. Clark’s touring band provides a slinky, New Orleans-style second-line rhythm that underscores a deeper authenticity to this real-life global event that took the lives of 11 men.

“Take Me Down” will also be released as a digital single beginning September 9^th from all participating digital retailers.  Click here to order.

Steve Jablonsky has composed the music for many of Hollywood’s most successful films including Transformers, Transformers:  Revenge of the Fallen, Transformers:  Dark of the Moon and Transformers:  Age of Extinction.  He has worked on multiple projects with director Peter Berg including Lone Survivor and Battleship.  Jablonsky’s other film credits include Pain & Gain, The Island,  A Nightmare on Elm Street, The Last Witch Hunter, Ender’s Game,Gangster Squad, and most recently Keanu and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles:  Out of the Shadows.

On Oct 6^th, Clark and company will perform the song on Jimmy Kimmel Live. Tune into ABC stations at 11:35pm EST / PST, and 10:35pm CT.
