Marillion set to release nine classic tracks re-imagined via 'With Friends From The Orchestra' on Nov. 29, 2019

I know many of my American friends are not familiar with British rock band Marillion, a great and ambitious troupe that has a long and rich legacy. Here is news on the band's next project...

'With Friends From The Orchestra' available on Friday, November 29, 2019

Earlier this year, Marillion entered the studio with the intention to record selected songs from their rich catalogue along with friends from the orchestra.

Recorded at The Racket Club and Peter Gabriel‘s Real World Studios, and with a running time of almost 80 minutes, With Friends From The Orchestra features nine classic Marillion tracks re-imagined and accompanied by the In Praise Of Folly String Quartet with Sam Morris (French Horn) and Emma Halnan (Flute).

Marillion explain:

“So our brilliant producer and collaborator Michael Hunter wrote some new string arrangements and we took a week out to go to Real World Studios and record with our friends. The result has exceeded our expectations, is indeed a thing of beauty.

We hope you enjoy the songs and agree with us that some of them are actually better than the originals(!). Whether or not you agree with that bold statement we’re sure this work will move you.”

Estonia,” originally from 1997’s album This Strange Engine and the first song to be revealed from the album, gives a first insight into the hauntingly beautiful and touching versions of some of the band’s most beloved songs.

The official video grants an exclusive peak behind the scenes of the album recording sessions and can be watched on Marillion’s official Youtube channel: https://youtu.be/c1UEHTMHkxM

Sights and Sounds: The Church, Big Head Todd and the Monsters, Marillion

Here is a roundup of some major news in the world of music from three super great artists from across the music spectrum...

the church Release 26th Album
Man Woman Life Death Infinity out Friday, October 6th
On Tour in North America now

"…the music of the church still sounds vital and challenging. They sound just as hungry and exciting as they did three decades ago."
ABC News

"There is nothing, or not much, that is obvious and instant about the church. Songs that at first pass you by flare into life once you've paid them proper respect and attention…no doubt why people care so deeply about them."
news.com.au

"Arguably one of the greatest Australian bands of all time."
Tone Deaf

One of the most indelible, progressive and passionately admired rock bands of our time, the church release another masterpiece of sonic exploration, Man Woman Life Death Infinity. The ARIA Hall of Fame band's 26th album is their second with the rejuvenated line-up - Steve Kilbey, Peter Koppes, Tim Powles and Ian Haug - and is released this Friday worldwide.

The past several years have been wildly successful for the church, pulling a 20,000 strong crowd at at Primavera Sound, a performance at SXSW, four North American tours and their first European tour in almost a decade. The band is presently touring in support of their new album in the states. Woven with classics spanning almost 50 years of underground glory, the set will feature selections from Man Woman Life Death Infinity, including the shape-shifting dreamscape of the first, exhilarating cut, 'Another Century', and its imminent follow-up, new single 'Undersea': yet another new dimension of chiming strings and kaleidoscopic images.

Man Woman Life Death Infinity is where the revitalized quartet's freshly tuned chemistry reaches a new potency and precision: ten songs, 45 minutes, and a quantum leap into unexplored territory as strange as it is irresistible. Written in two separate sessions in March across Ian Haug's Airlock Studios in Brisbane and Tim Powles' Space Junk Studios in Sydney Man Woman Life Death Infinity is the first full length since the early 90s where the band have collected their song ideas before hitting the record light and just 'going with the flow'.  Co-produced alongside long-term audio accomplice Ted Howard at Rancom Street Studios, Man Woman Life Death Infinity delivers a more succinct release than 2014's Further/Deeper.

Singer, lyricist and bassist Steve Kilbey explains this 26th full length offering is the church's 'water record'.  "I guess water is my element. I've always marveled at the sea and rivers and rain. It wasn't conscious at all but on reflection, it definitely is a preoccupation on this record. What that means, I don't know," he says. "This is an album we’re really looking forward to exploring live," he says. "The way I write lyrics is very stream-of-consciousness. I never question them until we perform live, so I discover them in time as much as the audience."

BIG HEAD TODD AND THE MONSTERS CONFIRM U.S. TOUR DATES
UPCOMING ALBUM NEW WORLD ARISIN’ OUT NOVEMBER 3 ON BIG RECORDS

Colorado band Big Head Todd and the Monsters are set to tour the U.S. throughout the fall/winter in support of their forthcoming eleventh studio album, New World Arisin’, due November 3 on their own Big Records imprint. See below for a complete list of dates.
The album’s first single “Damaged One” is currently at #26 and rising on the AAA Chart. Listen HERE.
New World Arisin’ was written and produced by vocalist/guitarist Todd Park Mohr with original members Rob Squires on bass and Brian Nevin on drums and percussions. Plus, Jeremy Lawton on keyboards, lap and petal steel guitar and backing vocals. It was recorded at E-Town Studios in Boulder, Colorado and mixed by Mark Needham with engineering by James Tuttle.
Mohr explains that the songs were written over a twenty-year period. He describes that “some songs fell into place immediately, while others took many years to materialize. Yet after such a long gestating process for the writing, the recording was completed in just six days.”
Having played Denver’s historic Red Rocks Amphitheater more than nineteen times with recent dates sold out this summer, the band is part of the fabric of the Colorado music scene. The trio of Mohr, Nevin and Squires founded the band in the early ’80s in Boulder and quickly built a strong reputation in the local club circuit. The band’s debut album, Another Mayberry, arrived in 1989, though it would be another four years before their breakthrough platinum-selling third full length Sister Sweetly made them a national phenomenon with the single “Bittersweet,” which remains a rock radio staple to this day. The only personnel change in these three decades has been the addition of a fourth member, putative “new guy” Lawton, in 2004
The band has released music steadily throughout the decades leading to their most recent release 2014’s BlackBeehive. They have also released two live albums Live MonstersLive at the Fillmore and 2015 Live at Red Rocks.
The band has proudly controlled its own business dealings and marketing from the start, releasing 2007’s All the Love You Need via their fan email list. In 2011, they formed a new project under the name Big Head Blues Clubrecording two albums under the moniker. The first 100 Years of Robert Johnson celebrates the songs of the late blues great and features legends such as BBKingCharlie MusselwhiteCedric BurnsideDavidHoneyboy” Edwards, Hubert SumlinRuthie Forster and Lightin’ Malcolm. Their second LP Way Down InsideSongs of Willie Dixon is a tribute to Willie Dixon featuring Mud Morganfield, Billy Branch, Ronnie Baker Brooks, and Erica Brown. The album was produced by multiple Grammy winner Chris Goldsmith and Todd Park Mohr. The band has gone on to play shows under the name Big Head Blues Club moniker inviting some of the legends featured on the album to perform with them.
Recently, band composed the theme song to programs including “NCISNew Orleans” and “Swamp Wars.” Their music has also been included in Contraband, The To Do ListGrudge MatchGarden Party, “So You Think You Can Dance” and many more.

Classic artists showcased via sterling releases

Classic rock fans know 2016 is their year; a number of legendary artists who earned their biggest hits in the '70s, '80s and '90s are back with new collections celebrating and building on their legacies.

Artist: ZZ Top
Title: Live! Greatest Hits From Around the World (Suretone Records)
You might like if you enjoy: ZZ Top, Buddy Guy, Jeff Beck
Tell me more: It's difficult to think of a classic Rock and Roll Hall of Fame outfit spawned in the late 1960s whose founding lineup remains unchanged while dishing out tasty versions of its best-known material as powerfully as ever. That's exactly the case with ZZ Top, the blues-rock trio formed in Houston, Texas in 1969 heard unleashing fiery versions of many of their best-known songs on Live! Greatest Hits From Around the World. The 15-track disc showcases singer-guitarist Billy F Gibbons, singer-bassist Dusty Hill and drummer Frank Beard via recordings captured on three continents over the course of several recent tours. Standout tracks on this great collection include the driving "Got Me Under Pressure (recorded in New York City), aptly-dubbed Texas rocker "Beer Drinkers & Hell Raisers" (tracked in Las Vegas), fiery "La Grange" (captured in Dallas) and infectious "Sharp Dressed Man" (nailed in Los Angeles). Fans of guitar legend Jeff Beck will also want to get the disc; the groundbreaking guitar virtuoso joins ZZ Top at a performance in London for the melodic blues nugget "Rough Boy" and blistering "Sixteen Tons." Information: zztop.com.

Artist: Toto
Title: Live at Montreux 1991 (Eagle Rock Entertainment)
You might like if you enjoy: Toto, Kansas
Tell me more: In the early 1990s, Toto returned to action as a quartet  featuring founding members Steve Lukather (guitar, lead vocals), David Paich (keyboards, vocals), and brothers Jeff Porcaro (drums, percussion) and Mike Porcaro (bass). That specific lineup is featured on the wonderful live collection Live at Montreux 1991 DVD+CD release (also available on Blu-ray + CD and via digital video) that kicks off with two original prog-rock selections ("On the Run" and the title track from what would be the band's 1992 album "Kingdom Of Desire"). Lukather's guitar playing is a wonder across the concert recording as evidenced by the crowd-pleasing version of the Jimi Hendrix classic "Red House" and amped funk-rock take on the Sly Stone classic"I Want to Take You Higher." Several of Toto's most beloved originals ("Africa," "Rosanna") are delivered in memorable new renditions. Information: eagle-rock.com.

Artist: Styx
Title: Live at The Orleans Arena Las Vegas (Eagle Rock Entertainment)
You might like if you enjoy: Styx, Kansas, Supertramp
Tell me more: Those who can't get enough of the wonderful 2015 audio CD release Styx: Live at the Orleans Arena are in luck. The July 2014 concert release has now been released on DVD, Blu-ray and digital video and was worth the wait. A number of the band's memorable songs are showcased, including a rousing "Blue Collar Man (Long Nights)" where lead guitarist Don Felder (the Eagles) trades fret work with Styx lead guitarists Tommy Shaw and James "JY" Young. The highlight of the concert is an astonishing version of "Crystal Ball," where Shaw begins the masterwork singing alone accompanied by his finger picking on an acoustic 12-sting guitar. The song artfully builds to include lush backing vocals and keyboard textures by the rest of the band as Shaw soon switches over to play electric guitar including a stunning solo. Other favorites on the set include "Too Much Time On My Hands," "Rockin' the Paradise" and "Renegade." Information: eagle-rock.com.

Artist: Marillion
Title: F E A R (EarMusic)
You might like if you enjoy: Peter Gabriel, Genesis, Porcupine Tree
Tell me more: Few progressive rock artists can walk the tightrope between symphonic highs and sparse introspection like Marillion. The British troupe's 18th album F E A R demonstrates that great rock artists are not content to simply revisit past glories; the band's aptly-titled new album is personified by the line "F E A R is everywhere" (in "El Dorado iv. Fear"). There are institutions to be feared (religion, war, greed) in the big picture, and more personal demons like loneliness and mortality that greet our heroes in the mirror. The concept album is filled with memorable songs that resound with melody and texture. This is an album that grips the listener with a single listen, but will resonate even more strongly with subsequent listens. Information: marillion.com.

Artist: Journey
Title: Live in Manila (Eagle Rock Entertainment)
You might like if you enjoy: Foreigner, Steve Perry, REO Speedwagon
Tell me more: Originally released seven years ago as a DVD stand-alone release, the oft-seen Journey concert filmed in Manila, Philippines on March 14, 2009 with the band's then-new lead vocalist Arnel Pineda has been reissued in a beautiful package. Journey Live In Manila has been reissued as a deluxe DVD+2CD version complete with an informative booklet (the title is also available as a Blu-ray+2CD or on digital). Fans of Journey will be won over by the mix of uptempo rockers ("Never Walk Away," Separate Ways," "Don't Stop Believin' ") and power ballads ("Only the Young," "Lights," "Faithfully") that are delivered across the two-hour performance. Information: eagle-rock.com.
