New music: Clay Dubose, Denise La Grassa

Tell me more: Singer-songwriter Clay Dubose has released Father Time & Mother Nature, an aptly-titled studio album that taps into love, loss, family ties and mortality with lyrical depth while showcasing the Texas-based artist's rewarding mix of Americana, blues, rock and country. What's more, the Ted Russell Kamp-produced album is bolstered by a terrific lineup of top-tier studio musicians including Danny Timms (piano, keyboards), John Schreffler (pedal steel), Eric Core (harmonica), Brian Whelan (piano), Jamie Douglas (drums) and the aforementioned Kamp (bass). There is a real world depth heard in the songs on the album, ranging from the opening cut "When Heroes Say Goodbye" (whose lyrics look at the loss of musical greats such as Tom Petty, Prince and Neil Peart when they pass away too soon) and infectious original "Dreams Come Untrue" to the affecting "I Hope You're Watching" (reflecting on the death of Dubose's father), emotive Baroque ballad "New Game Now" and driving blues harp-adorned "Growing Wild." The ambitious title track includes the late Neal Casal's atmospheric guitar work and guest vocals from celebrated singer Janiva Magness. Information: claydubose.com.

Title: A Crossroads Communion (deelagee Records)

Tell me more: Denise La Grassa has released an album that conjures up the magic of Chicago blues even while showcasing her own unique voice and strong religious faith. A Crossroads Communion is a nine-track album that will reward lovers of classic artists such as Howlin' Wolf and Memphis Minnie (just listen to the powerful take on Albert King's "I'll Play The Blues For You") as well as those who have discovered the magic of trance blues icon Otis Taylor (as evidenced by the propulsive original opener "Big Bad Dream" or decidedly original "Joyride"). Other standouts on the album include the traditional-styled "These Vain Games," hypnotic "Who Will Mourn You?" and funk-tinged closer "Go Bad Mouth Yourself." New music: Peter Frampton, Jason Aldean, The Corner Laughers

In this column I highlight the highly-recommended returns from Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Peter Frampton, country music great Jason Aldean and indie folk-pop quartet The Corner Laughers.

Tell me more: Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Peter Frampton is back with Carry the Light, his first album of all-new material in 16 years. Co-written and produced with his son Julian Frampton, Carry the Light features guest appearances from singer Sheryl Crow, saxophone player Bill Evans, guitarists H.E.R. and Tom Morello, singer Graham Nash and keyboardist Benmont Tench. But make no mistake, it are Frampton's top-tier talents as singer and guitar master that anchor the outstanding 10-track effort. The depth and range of material on the album is impressive to be sure, from the intoxicating world music-flavored title track, fiery blues rocker "Lions At The Gate," the gorgeous "I'm Sorry Elle" (the latter featuring Nash on guest vocals) and confessional "Breaking The Mold" are all early standouts. The nuanced "I Can't Let It Be," jazzy "Can You Take Me There," genre-blending "Tinderbox" and expressive instrumental "At The End Of The Day" are among the highlights on the last half of the LP. My favorite cut on the album is "Buried Treasure," a blistering rocker that is actually a tribute to Tom Petty's SiriusXM radio show of the same name that forcefully showcases Frampton's signature vocals and virtuoso lead guitar work. Tell me more: Country music great Jason Aldean is back with his 12th studio album, Songs About Us, an ambitious disc that finds the Macon, Georgia native continuing to deliver infectious rock-flavored lived-in modern country tracks that touch on themes of romance and heartbreak, determination in the face of defeat and independence with a masterful touch. The parade of alluring songs includes the stellar anguish-mining opener "Anytime Soon," rocking "Drinking About You," tender "How Far Does A Goodbye Go," surefire sing-along "Good Thing Going," reflective "Backroads Of My Memory," soaring "Easier Gone," and luxurious love song "Her Favorite Color." Title: Concerns Of Wasp And Willow (Big Stir Records)

Tell me more: There is something both decidedly different and wonderfully familiar in the inviting sound of Northern California-based The Corner Laughers. The indie-pop quartet has returned after a five-year absence with the wonderful Corners Of Wasp And Willow, an album that showcases the stellar talents of Karla Kane (lead vocals, ukulele), Khoi Huynh (bass, vocals), KC Bowman (guitar, vocals) and Charlie Crabtree (drums) with aplomb. The 10-song disc features a myriad of wonderful originals including the environmental-minded opener "Terra Mia," shimmering melodic gem "Dusking," dream-swept retro folk sortie "Rainbow Cardigan," beautiful "The Harvestman," tuneful Halloween-aimed nugget "Dark Matter," luxurious "Victoria Sponge" and evocative album closer "Larkspur Landing." The Corner Laughers have crafted a marvelously literate album that would have sounded great if it had been issued a generation ago and one that will undoubtedly resonate with listeners decades from now. New music: The Droptines soar with 'Drought Flower'

Thanks to a wonderful friend whose taste in discovering new music may well outdistance even my own, I was introduced to the The Droptines a few months ago and can proclaim they are one of my favorite bands to emerge this decade. The Austin, Texas-based Americana quintet led by frontman Conner Arthur blend alternative country, Southern rock, blues, gritty roots and top-tier songcraft into an authentic style rooted in real world emotion. I am not the first to say this and will definitely not be the last; I truly believe The Droptines are destined for bona fide greatness. 

The Concan, Texas-spawned band's new album Drought Flower (released via Miranda Lambert's Big Loud Texas label on April 3) is a joyful lesson in how to fall in love with new music anew and to feel its power sweep over you. The majority of the 11 songs on the disc play out in under three minutes, but nevertheless pack an emotional wallop for anyone who has fallen in love, lost someone they cared about, woke up with a hangover or longed to escape the cage where they are now.

The songs are not delivered via empty slogans or labored poetry, but rather feel as genuine as the events, persons and places that inspired their creation. Recorded at Arlyn Studios in Austin, there isn't anything even close to a throwaway on the LP.

Among the great cuts on the album are the rollicking opener "A Town Near You," anthemic "Tombstone" celebrating love's magic touch with a burgeoning sonic ascent, the rollicking title track, deeply affecting mandolin-adorned "Mamaw" that details an elderly loved one's descent into dementia, confessional "What Ate My Friend" and biting rocker "Whatever It Is."

The Droptines deliver two essential covers on the LP, a haunting take on the Mike McClure Band's "Calling All Cars" and evocative reading of The Magnetic Fields' "Grand Canyon," the latter as poignant as any romance-minded cry for help in memory. 

In addition to Connor Arthur, The Droptines feature bassist Dillon Sampson, drummer Johnny Sheets, guitarist Donny Parkinson and steel guitar player Tony Rincon.

The rousing opener "Blues Ain't Looking For You," aptly-pegged "Boogie Till the Cows Come Home," affecting "I'm Alright," propulsive "What Just Happened," instrumental piano-anchored "Boogie for Patty," and beautiful "Rest In Peace." The 10-track album features guest and legendary drummer Bernard "Pretty" Purdie, as well as appearances by harmonica ace Rob Paparozzi, bassist Mike Merritt, slide guitarist Chris Bergson, and vocalist Alexis P. The legendary Southern rock outfit led by lead singer-guitarist/co-founder Don Barnes that is behind rock hits including "Hold On Loosely" and "Caught Up In You" have released Milestone, the band's first new music in more than 20 years. The nine-track album features the group's signature blend of infectious guitar-anchored rock including the melodic opener "So Much So Right," heavy anthem "Slightly Controversial," enchanting "All I Haven't Said" and "Long Long Train," rocking sing-along "The Main Thing" and "Looking For My Life," and winning "Making Up For Lost Time." Tell me more: Originally released on DVD in 2004, Little Feat: Highwire Act in St. Louis has just been reissued as a wonderful Blu-ray+2CD collection (the concert is also available on digital video as well). The 2003 concert performance captured Little Feat in top form with the American band delivering 17 tracks blending rock, blues, soul, folk and Americana over 134 wonderful minutes. The line-up was among the ensemble's best, with Paul Barrere (guitars, vocals), Bill Payne (keyboard, vocals), Sam Clayton (percussion, vocals), Kenny Gradney (bass), Richie Hayward (drums, vocals), Fred Tackett (guitar, mandolin, trumpet) and Shaun Murphy (vocals, percussion) locked in and collectively showcasing their outstanding talents across the set. Highlights span the length of the concert, including the jazzy-rock opener "Time Loves a Hero," '70s-flavored rocker "Day Or Night," aptly-titled "Cajun Girl" bolstered by Tackett's inspired mandolin work, gorgeous Americana original "Willin'," and soulful "I'd Be Lyin'," the latter featuring Murphy's powerhouse soprano. Additionally, there are plenty of extended instrumental jams across the wonderful track listing that showcase the players' impressive musical chops to be sure. The Blu-ray Disc features a bonus 11-minute documentary titled "Little Feat Close Up In St. Louis" which features the band members discussing the colorful history and evolution of the group. Title: Rock 'N' Roll Soul: Live 1989 (Liberation Hall)

Tell me more: The "1989 Woodstock Revisited" Festival was staged at Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson, CA in August 1989 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Woodstock. Among the celebrated classic rock favorites to perform at the event were Mark Farner, Edgar Winter, Humble Pie, Canned Heat, Melanie, and Blood, Sweat and Tears. Now Farner's complete set from that event has been issued on both audio CD and DVD. Farner — founding member, lead singer and guitarist for Michigan's Grand Funk Railroad — delivered a powerful 15-song set backed by guitarist Arnie Vilches, bassist Lawrence Buckner, keyboardist Mike Blair and drummer Mike Maple. The set list is a mix of Grand Funk Railroad's beloved hits and Farner's strong solo material. Farner is an energetic and riveting frontman who shines on the mix of material; he even trades in his electric guitar to play electronic keyboards on several cuts ("Footstompin' Music" and "Mean Mistreater"). Farner and company immerse the crowd in blues on "Judgement Day Blues," which features the notable guitar work of Farner and Vilches. The soulful "Some Kind of Wonderful" features Buckner and Farner sharing lead vocals. Other highlights of the set include the tuneful sing-along "Bad Time," ambitious "I'm Your Captain/Closer to Home," riff rocker "Heartbreaker" and festive closer "The Loco-Motion." Title: Blood Brothers — Live in Canada (Gulf Coast Records)

Tell me more: Fans of scorching electric blues will want to run out and pick up a copy of Blood Brothers — Live in Canada. The ensemble featuring Mike Zito (vocals, guitar) and Albert Castiglia (vocals, guitar) delivers a fiery performance across the 12-track live recording that was captured at Blue Frog Studios in British Columbia, Canada on May 19 and 20, 2023. The blistering blues-rock opener "Hey Sweet Mama," dazzling cover of Tinsley Ellis' "Tooth and Nail," rootsy "In My Soul," and poignant countrified blues nugget "A Thousand Heartaches" are early standouts. Just as luring are the Chicago blues-styled Zito original "No Good Woman," slide guitar-adorned take on John Hiatt's "My Business" and tender "Gone To Texas." Closing out the concert CD is an explosive reading of Neil Young's especially timely "Rocking' in the Free World." The other band members heard this night (bassist Doug Byrkit, drummer-percussionist Matt Johnson, drummer-percussionist Ephraim Lowell and keyboardist Lewis Stephens) contribute mightily to the performance. Duran Duran Captures Halloween Spirt on 'Danse Macabre'

Tell me more: Duran Duran's Halloween-themed album Danse Macabre may immerse itself in the dark and spooky trappings of the holiday but is thankfully not bound but them. Indeed, Danse Macabre is a decidedly fun listen that finds the pioneering British quartet — singer Simon Le Bon, bassist John Taylor, drummer Roger Taylor and keyboardist Nick Rhodes — offering up a winning mix of brand new originals, creatively reworked covers of songs by Talking Heads, The Rolling Stones, Billie Eilish and The Specials and even new versions of past Duran Duran classics. What's more, the concept album includes a celebrated parade of musical guests including producer/guitarist/composer Nile Rodgers, Måneskin singer Victoria De Angelis and former Duran Duran members Andy Taylor and Warren Cuccurullo. 

Among the terrific cuts on Danse Macabre are the unsettling opener "Nightboat," a shimmering bass-heavy grooving version of Talking Heads' "Psycho Killer" featuring guest vocals from De Angelis, the gothic dance title track, instantly-accessible funk foray "Black Moonlight," playful "Ghost Town," a fiery run through Siouxsie and the Banshees' "Spellbound" and a propulsive take on The Rolling Stones' "Paint It Black." The 13-track album closes with the luxuriously beautiful "Confession In The Afterlife."

Danse Macabre is out now via Tape Modern for BMG with artwork featuring images adapted from a collection of authentic vintage séance photos sourced by Nick Rhodes at auction.  It is available on Black 2LP and CD, with a limited-edition Translucent Galaxy 2LP. The album is also available on high res Blu-ray audio.

'Hackney Diamonds' shines as bright as Rolling Stones' extraordinary legacy

Tell me more: More than 60 years into their sensational run, The Rolling Stones have returned with a true masterwork. Hackney Diamonds is an ambitious album that finds Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood delivering a masterful celebration of their signature sound infused with enough contemporary sonics to surprise across the 12-song set.

With drummer Steve Jordan playing drum across the majority of the album tracks in the place of the late drummer Charlie Watts (the latter who passed away in August 2021 at the age of 80), an all-star cast of greats add their respective talents with a collective focus on the songs. Producer Andrew Watt's role is likely another major element in the ambition and success of the album, the British band's first new full-length disc of new material since 2005's A Bigger Bang.

Indeed, the stellar production heard across the album is equaled by the strength and diversity of the song craft as well as the inspired performances of the players. And Jagger sounds outstanding across the title delivering vocals that are strong and stirring.

Hackney Diamonds' lead single "Angry" is among the album's more signature rockers, with Jagger's emotional appeal for forgiveness delivered against an uptempo beat and sharp guitar work from Richards and Wood. 

But it are the album's deep cuts and the diversity of material that make Hackney Diamonds a genuinely magnificent gem. 

None of the dozen selections on the album is a throw away. The band can be heard revisiting past glories with a decidedly fresh approach while also frequently expanding its musical palette.

"Get Close" is anchored by some sizzling guitar work. A melodic chorus and top-tier sax playing bolster the song. "Depending On You" is a beautiful country-tinged ballad. With its gorgeous arrangement, the semi-acoustic song is deeply affecting. 

One of the biggest surprises on the album is the aptly-titled "Bite My Head Off," a true punk rock foray featuring Paul McCartney on bass. Listening to the edgy cut is to be reminded of the ferocity of the Sex Pistols. No mere curiosity, the punk rock-edged track hits home.

Among other standouts on Hackney Diamonds are the country blues nugget "Dreamy Skies," the bewitching blues rocker "Live By The Sword" (the latter featuring the late Watts, former Stones bassist Bill Wyman and pianist Elton John) and the amazing gospel-meets-soul track "Sweet Sounds Of Heaven" featuring guests Lady Gaga (vocals) and Stevie Wonder (keyboards).

Richards is featured on lead vocals on the luxurious track "Tell Me Straight," anchored by some particularly lovely guitar work.

My favorite track is "Whole Wide World," a song that somehow blends the best of 1980s alternative rock with the Stones' timeless approach. The guitars are razor sharp and the explosive chorus is pure ear candy. Jagger's lyrics are especially poignant:

When the whole wide world is against you
And you’re standin’ in the rain
When all you friends have left you down and treat you with disdain
When the whole wide world’s against you
And life’s got you on the run
And you think the party’s over
But it’s only just begun

The album's final track," Rolling Stone Blues," is a winning traditional acoustic blues cover of Muddy Waters' 1950 classic "Rolling Stone" (the song that is said to have inspired the band's name). A wonderful track to bring The Rolling Stones' singular journey full circle.

Tell me more: While Nils Lofgren is best known for his long-time role as a member of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band, Neil Young's enduring Crazy Horse as well as his role as one the early members of Ringo Starr's All Starr Band, his exceptional talents as a solo artist shine just as bright across his wonderful new album Mountains. Lofgren's otherworldly skills as singer, songwriter and guitar master are displayed via a far-flung track listing that includes him performing originals amidst blues, rock, soul and Americana soundscapes. Lofgren addresses a troubled world, as well as the magical grasp of love and deep human connections on the decidedly personal album. The cast of musical greats who contribute to Mountains' might is also notable; Ringo Starr provides his singular skills behind the drum kit on the winning opener "Ain't the Truth Enough," while he adds vocals on the transcendent "Angel Blues." The beautiful ballad "Back in Your Arms" is bolstered by wonderful backing vocals from the Howard Gospel Choir; Lofgren's signature vocals are particularly poignant here. The bluesy tribute to the late Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts ("Won't Cry No More") is heartfelt and bewitching, Lofgren's voice blending magically with Cindy Mizelle's soprano and his own artful fret work. The countrified ballad "Nothin's Easy (For Amy)" is bolstered by guest Neil Young whose vocals blend powerfully with Lofgren's own. Tell me more: Syracuse, New York-based Power Pop Hall Of Fame outfit The Flashcubes are back with the aptly-titled Pop Masters (due Aug. 11 via audio CD and all streaming services courtesy of Big Stir Records). The quartet — whose 1977-1980 lineup is intact and features guitarists Paul Armstrong and Arty Lenin, bassist Gary Frenay and drummer Tommy Allen — released only two singles during their original run ("Christi Girl" and "Wait Til Next Week"). The band reunited in the 1990s and earned a growing following thanks to the release of new recordings and acclaim for their live performances. Fast forward to 2023 and Pop Masters fully rewards power pop lovers with a dozen great cuts; indeed the collection gathers a wide range of singles that have received airplay on the likes of "Little Steven's Underground Garage," WFMU, KXLU, and more. Standouts on Pop Masters include a rousing cover of the Pezband's tuneful rocker "Baby It's Cold Outside" with the song's original writer and singer Mimi Betinis sharing lead vocals, a sophisticated take on Pilot's 1977 track "Get Up And Go," a powerful musical reading of Shoes' "Tomorrow Night," and infectious takes on the Paley Brothers' "Come Out And Play" and Motors' "Forget About You." Late disc highlights include a euphoric take on Dwight Twilley's "Alone In My Room," shimmering version of Posies' "Flavor Of The Month" and an inspired performance of Sparks' "Nothing To Do." Also essential is the version of the Eric Carmen-penned "Get The Message," a glorious track that recalls the best of '60s and '70s garage rock stylings during its rollicking run; Cyrus Erie's Randy Klawon adds guitar to the driving cover. Tell me more: Stories from a Rock n Roll Heart marks the first album from acclaimed Americana singer-songwriter Lucinda Williams since she suffered a debilitating stroke in November 2020, a challenging event that greatly impacted her ability to play guitar (her principal tool used to write songs). Williams, 70, is thankfully on the mend and was terrific when I caught her enticing set at the Pure Imagination Festival in Prescott, AZ in May, and her new album Stories from a Rock n Roll Heart certifies her top-tier talents as a songwriter and singer are fully intact. Williams— who produced her 15th studio album along with Tom Overby and Ray Kennedy — co-wrote the material here with Overby, Jesse Malin and Travis Stephens. Additionally, she is joined by a slew of famed artists who provide backing vocals across the 10-track collection. The songs here often chronicle the aftermath of her stroke; just listen to the countrified confessional "Jukebox" where she sings: "These days my world seems so small / I'm a prisoner inside these four walls / Going Crazy with the sound of my own voice / Going crazy if I don't get out of this house." On "New York Comeback" — where her own terrific vocals are bolstered by the backing vocals of Bruce Springsteen and Patti Scialfa — she genuinely conjures up the magic of returning to the stage: "Let me have the final say / One last chance to do it my way / One last shot, one last swing / One final song to sing." Among the other outstanding tracks on the disc are the joyful roots rocker "Let's Get the Band Back Together," the yearning "Last Call for the Truth," rollicking "Rock n Roll Heart," haunting "Hum's Liquor" and lovely "Where the Song Will Find Me," the latter a poignant exploration of the singer's mission to embrace her life's work of writing and recording new music. The album's closer is the defiant "Never Gonna Fade Away," where Williams promises: "I'm not gonna fade away / I'm never gonna fade away" — the song's emotional close is an invitation for discerning listeners to reflect and then hit "repeat" to play Stories from a Rock n Roll Heart again. Tell me more: Leave it to Sigur Rós singer-songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Jónsi to surprise the world with the gift of new music on Oct. 29. Without advance fanfare or notice, the artist's third solo album Obsidian dropped to coincide with his art installation of the same name (which is running through Dec. 17, 2021 at the Tanya Bonakdar Gallery in New York). The exhibition was inspired by the recent eruption of the Fagradalsfjall volcano in his native Iceland. Obsidian, according to a media release, "centers on the Icelandic natural wonder. Recorded and produced in tandem with the works on view, the parallel formats inform one another and interweave through their embodiment of volcanic energies. Over the course of 10 tracks, each with evocative titles referencing sights, textures, and aromas of the ashen terrain, Jónsi takes his listeners through narrative arcs between erupting flares.” Indeed, "Obsidian" is both mesmerizing and immersive, with Jónsi's otherworldly vocals cascading over and amidst a Neo-symphonic sonic sphere that extends just over an hour in length. The truly haunting opener "Vikur" is followed by a parade of incredible cinematic compositions; "Ambrox" is at once gorgeous and experimental while "Kvika" is bolstered by choral and sci-fi sonic elements. Tell me more: The War on Drugs are one of the most original and talented American rock bands to emerge in the 21st century. On the Adam Granduciel-led Philadelphia-spawned troupe's new album I Don't Live Here Anymore the soaring guitar sonics that elevate the group's introspective songcraft and expansive soundscapes are thankfully intact. Co-produced by Granduciel and Shawn Everett, the War on Drugs' fifth full-length album and first since 2017's brilliant A Deeper Understanding — which won the Grammy Award for Best Rock Album at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards — provides an even more nuanced approach for listeners to celebrate. On the anthemic "I Don't Live Here Anymore" (bolstered by indie pop Lucius' luxurious vocals), quiet "Living Proof," buoyant "Harmonia's Dream," daring "I Don't Wanna Wait," melodic "Wasted" and shimmering "Change" and "Occasional Rain" collectively display the astonishing range of Granduciel (lead vocals, lead guitar), David Hartley (bass guitar), Robbie Bennett (keyboards), Charlie Hall (drums), Jon Natchez (saxophone, keyboards) and Anthony LaMarca (guitar). Tell me more: The release of singer-songwriter Ian Jones' new The Evergreens EP confirms the arrival of a terrific talent. The six songs on The Evergreens showcase an artist blessed with top-flight abilities as a lead vocalist, compelling songwriter and a musician with a genuine knack for blending the best of Americana, roots and heartland stylings into his signature sound. Following up on his 2019 release Results Not Typical, Jones understands that important themes and lyrical tales work best when embedded in memorable songcraft; that is clear across a track listing that never falters. My favorites include the lovely countrified opener "Evergreens" that explores the courage of those who leave for home in pursuit of their dreams, the Dylan-worthy "Liars, Criminals, Beggars and Thieves" (a well-aimed view of politicians), the poignant "Hallelujah" and infectious "Promised Land."
