New music: Peter Frampton, Jason Aldean, The Corner Laughers

In this column I highlight the highly-recommended returns from Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Peter Frampton, country music great Jason Aldean and indie folk-pop quartet The Corner Laughers.

Tell me more: Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Peter Frampton is back with Carry the Light, his first album of all-new material in 16 years. Co-written and produced with his son Julian Frampton, Carry the Light features guest appearances from singer Sheryl Crow, saxophone player Bill Evans, guitarists H.E.R. and Tom Morello, singer Graham Nash and keyboardist Benmont Tench. But make no mistake, it are Frampton's top-tier talents as singer and guitar master that anchor the outstanding 10-track effort. The depth and range of material on the album is impressive to be sure, from the intoxicating world music-flavored title track, fiery blues rocker "Lions At The Gate," the gorgeous "I'm Sorry Elle" (the latter featuring Nash on guest vocals) and confessional "Breaking The Mold" are all early standouts. The nuanced "I Can't Let It Be," jazzy "Can You Take Me There," genre-blending "Tinderbox" and expressive instrumental "At The End Of The Day" are among the highlights on the last half of the LP. My favorite cut on the album is "Buried Treasure," a blistering rocker that is actually a tribute to Tom Petty's SiriusXM radio show of the same name that forcefully showcases Frampton's signature vocals and virtuoso lead guitar work. Tell me more: There is something both decidedly different and wonderfully familiar in the inviting sound of Northern California-based The Corner Laughers. The indie-pop quartet has returned after a five-year absence with the wonderful Corners Of Wasp And Willow, an album that showcases the stellar talents of Karla Kane (lead vocals, ukulele), Khoi Huynh (bass, vocals), KC Bowman (guitar, vocals) and Charlie Crabtree (drums) with aplomb. The 10-song disc features a myriad of wonderful originals including the environmental-minded opener "Terra Mia," shimmering melodic gem "Dusking," dream-swept retro folk sortie "Rainbow Cardigan," beautiful "The Harvestman," tuneful Halloween-aimed nugget "Dark Matter," luxurious "Victoria Sponge" and evocative album closer "Larkspur Landing." The Corner Laughers have crafted a marvelously literate album that would have sounded great if it had been issued a generation ago and one that will undoubtedly resonate with listeners decades from now. Modern day bluesman Mike Zito, legendary singer-songwriter great Tom Rush and Canadian soul singer Jeff Rogers are back with new albums.

Tell me more: Blues great Mike Zito's aptly-titled Life Is Hard is an outstanding album, bolstered by uniformly incredible musicianship, the impressive production talents of Joe Bonamassa and Josh Smith, a truly stellar track listing and an emotional backdrop where Zito's wife Laura passed away from cancer prior to the recording of the 12-track project. The uptempo take on Little Milton's "Lonely Man," searing Fred James-penned Chicago blues title track (the latter really showcasing Zito's strong vocals), gospel-meets-blue take on Stevie Wonder's "Have a Talk with God" and his own soulful "Forever My Love" are among the early terrific cuts on the album. A gritty Southern fried take on Tinsley Ellis' "Dying to do Wrong," sumptuous cover of the Guess Who classic "These Eyes," yearning reading of Tab Benoit's "Darkness" bolstered by fiery lead guitar work, Zito's own romance-themed "Without Loving You" and chilling "Death Don't Have No Mercy" (written by Gary Davis) extend the album's palpable magic on its last half. Information: mikezito.com.

Tell me more: Legendary folk singer Tom Rush is set to return with his wonderful new album Gardens Old, Flowers New on March 1 (the Appleseed Records title marks his first new album since 2018's Voices). Among the earliest heroes of the singer-songwriter movement, Rush is joined on his highly-anticipated return by a group of great players who add keyboards, hurdy-gurdy, percussion, dobro, sax, penny whistle, harmonica and more to the disc's wonderful acoustic soundscape. The Matt Nakoa-produced Gardens Old, Flowers New finds Rush, 83, exploring the highs and lows of life, and frequently using humor to further propel the compelling originals. The range of material amazes at every turn, and Rush's strong vocals and acoustic guitar work perfectly enhance the tracks. Tell me more: Canadian singer-songwriter Jeff Rogers brings a wealth of soul to his wonderful new album Dream Job. Recorded at Wishbone Studios in legendary Muscle Shoals, Alabama, Rogers is backed by guitarist Kelvin Holly (Little Richard, Bobby Bland), keyboardist Clayton Ivey (The Staple Sisters, Thelma Houston), drummer Justin Holder (Keb' Mo', Delbert McClinton) and bassist Shonna Tucker (Booker T. Jones, Drive-By Truckers) upping the musical proceedings across the nine-track album. First and foremost, Rogers' incredible lead vocals make a bold and memorable statement across Dream Job, notably on the soulful opener "Her Kind of Trouble," infectious R&B track "Lock & Key," deeply affecting title track, soul-drenched blues ballad "Wish You Wouldn't Go" and heartfelt "Saving This Bottle of Wine." Tell me more: On her newly released album Gently as I Go, Maine-based folk singer Caroline Cotter showcases a lovely soprano heard on a range of introspective and heartfelt originals. The album opener "Coming Your Way" is a beautiful introduction where Cotter's lyrics and vocal yearning paint a picture of two soulmates who share a powerful bond and how no distance can keep them apart. On "The Year Of the Wrecking Ball," there is a deep sense of melancholy to be sure about the ghosts of childhood and the painful loss of the comfort we find in family: "Inside the bedroom I hear her still on the phone / 33 years of pleading God, please don't leave me alone." The album's first single, "Don't Wait," is a song of encouragement pushing listeners to seize the day; indeed the song's strong call includes the admonition to: "Don't wait for the sun to rise to get out of bed / Don't wait for money to get ahead / Don't wait for praise to feel proud and strong / Don't wait for the true love to feel you belong." Other bewitching tracks on the outstanding independent album include the sweeping "The Call" (written for her 104 year old grandfather's funeral), the heartbreaking "Gently As I Go" that explores a doomed relationship and hopeful album closer "Morning Mantra." The music on Cotter's third album is artfully sparse, with gentle instrumentation adding mood to her poignant and beautiful songs that capture love, loss, hope and the most powerful experiences and emotions that shape our lives. Tell me more: Acclaimed singer-songwriter and Tony Award-winning performer Idina Menzel conjures up the groundbreaking dance music of the late 1970s and early '80s on her aptly-titled Drama Queen. The album is a true departure from her six past albums, but the aptly-dubbed "Queen of Broadway" brings bona fide vocal firepower and joy to the collection of dance floor-minded anthems on the nine-track album. The lead track "Move" immediately immerses the listener into an infectious disco moodscape, the driving beat catapulting the song forward with every beat. Tell me more: Julie Christensen's latest full-length album The Price We Pay for Love features the New Mexico-based artist teaming up with bassist and string arranger Terry Lee Burns for an album of genuinely moving tracks that flawlessly blend Americana, jazz, blues and singer-songwriter stylings. Delivering a mix of self-penned tracks and original arrangements of material written by other artists, Christensen's emotive vocals shine across the 10-track disc. A mesmerizing 7-minute take on Joni Mitchell's "Hejira" opens the album, with Burns' majestic bass playing bringing a lofty creativity to the musical reading. Christensen brings palpable emotion and forcefulness to the acoustic Michael Moss-penned "Goldbridge Road" as well as the Jimmy Webb classic "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress," the latter enhanced by John Funkhouser's touch on the piano. One of the best albums to come out of the 1960s folk music revival, the trio's debut release featured two of the biggest folk hits of all time, “Lemon Tree” and “If I Had A Hammer”, along with such classics as “500 Miles” and “Where Have All The Flowers Gone.” Peter, Paul & Mary's first album introduced one of the most popular, innovative and enduring folk music groups of all time!

'Peter, Paul & Mary' is a collection of the best songs that the group knew, stirring in its sensibilities and its haunting melodies, crossing between folk, children's songs, and even gospel; light-hearted just where it needed to be and earnest where it has to be. For a young group on their first album, this was meticulously produced and already showed their incredible sense of professionalism. The angelic voice of Mary Travers blends with Peter Yarrow's tenor and Paul Stookey's bass on some gorgeous harmonies.

Detroit-based  Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. just premiered a brand new song via Earmilk. The new track, entitled "Hiding" is off of the duo's upcoming EP, Patterns, which will be available this coming Tuesday, April 16th digitally and April 20th physically as a vinyl only Record Store Day piece. The physical version of the EP will include two exclusive remixes. Earlier this week, the band released the official lyric video for "If You Didn't See Me (Then You Weren't On The Dancefloor)" the EP's first single with ELLE. Upon it's release, "If You Didn't See Me..." hit #1 on HypeMachine's Most Popular Chart.

Josh and Daniel had this to say about the lyric video: "Hi friends. A few months back we were asked to make a 'lyric video' for our new song "If You Didn't See Me (Then You Weren't on the Dancefloor". We didn't exactly understand what a lyric video's purpose was,  but it was explained to us that Justin Timberlake and Michael Buble had recently done lyric videos. Since we enjoy any comparison of us made with a straight face to two such perennially snappy dressers as JT and M Bubes we went for it. We also thought it might be fun to turn the video into what is essentially one long, strange commercial for our favorite synthesizer that we used on our forthcoming album... the Teenage Engineering OP-1. If you're not familiar with the OP-1 it's really, really amazing AND is the reason you see Daniel playing the world's smallest keyboard in the video (i'm sure at least a couple of you were wondering). If you ARE familiar with the OP-1 this sorta serves as a fanboy video for its usage and illustrates how we sampled our own vocal, chopped it up and ran it through the OP-1 to create the 'hook' you hear intermittently throughout "If You Didn't See Me...". "

It's been a crazy ride for these two Detroit boys. Within a year of posting a self-produced EP on their website, DEJJ were performing in front of 10-15,000 people at Lollapalooza and Austin City Limits, and selling out headlining dates across the country. Warner Bros. Records released the band's debut album, It's A Corporate World, in June of 2011, which was championed by Rolling Stone, Paste, Filter and Stereogum. DEJJ became one of the most blogged about bands of 2011. Josh and Daniel are modern day musicians not resigned to a certain category.

THE MAINE TO RELEASE NEW STUDIO ALBUM, ‘FOREVER HALLOWEEN,’ ON JUNE 4

 

Phoenix, Arizona’s The Maine will release their fourth studio album Forever Halloween worldwide on June 4th*. The record will be released independently in the US in partnership with their management team Eighty One Twenty Three, and released via Rude Records in Europe, UK, Southeast Asia, Australia and Japan.

 

The album, produced by Brendan Benson of The Raconteurs, will be the band’s second consecutive self-­funded release following their departure from Warner Bro. Records.

 

"To be seen and treated as an equal by someone you hold in high regard is a gratifying and refreshing feeling” says frontman John O’Callaghan on working with Benson. “[He] opened his studio doors, did that and much more which helped provide the platform to create an album we can now all stand behind."

 

In support of the new record, The Maine will embark on a US tour from June through July. They will be headlining the first ever 8123 tour and share the stage with friends A Rocket To The Moon, This Century and Brighten. Lemuria announces new LP and tour dates

Without a distinguishable understanding of the pop and intensity, a silent video of a Lemuria show would appear to be that of a blistering hardcore trio. To the viewers surprise, turning the audio on they'd find the stage diving mania and screamers are really chanting "Maybe I should wear lipstick too" or "You fit in my skin, softest I've let in" as guitarist/vocalist Sheena Ozzella's dynamic, melodic voice guides the unlikely chorus. Lemuria might not sound like they are from Buffalo, NY, but the band was proudly birthed there, following the legacy of an oddly eclectic, if not eccentric, music scene. When you loosen your ears to the sugary indie-pop, you'll discover discordant notes, odd time signatures, and brutal riffs creating menacing yet catchy music. Releasing their early 7" EPs and splits on drummer/vocalist Alex Kerns' label Art of the Underground, they landed their debut full length Get Better on west coast pop-punk label Asian Man Records. Following their debut, and worked into an ambitious DIY touring schedule, they sprinkled 7" releases around on labels such as Hex, No Idea Records, and Suburban Home. Eventually, they would settle in with the Boston-based Bridge Nine Records with their 2011 sophomore album, Pebble. Pebble received great critical acclaim and was featured with SPIN,RollingStone.com, and countless other magazines and websites. Now, Lemuria are gearing up to release their newest effort The Distance Is So Bigon Bridge Nine Records on June 18th.  Their most mature and best effort to date, this album was recorded at the Magpie Cage with J Robbins (Against Me!, Jawbreaker, The Promise Ring) earlier this year.  Look for song premieres, pre-orders, and more news coming very soon. The trio enlisted director Cory Pampalone and his crew - Michael Hartnett (cinematography) Jen Thompson (production) – to bring the song to life.   “My intentions were to present a new look for kindlewood, something that was still loyal to who they are and what the song "Give & Take" represents but a departure from the overly folksy/earthy imagery and introducing some polished stark studio-esque environments.”   Released in 2012, the single follows their 2011 debut Desiderium – nominated for “Best Contemporary Folk Recording of 2011” by the Washington Area Music Association (WAMA). And the trio was also nominated by The Deli Magazine/DC for “Best Emerging Band” of 2011.   Kindlewood’s sound is “marked by the pretty dulcet vocals of frontwoman Kelci Smith, sister to Fleet Foxes’ J. Tillman and Pearly Gate Music's Zach Tillman.” (-Creative Loafing Tampa) But as Dallas’s Pegasus News notes, “Family ties aside, Kelci has proven herself an adept songwriter through and through.”   Kelci is backed by her husband, Galen Smith, and friend Jamison Lyman whose technical proficiency on the guitar and proclivity to fingerstyle picking provide the perfect landscape for Kelci’s imagery and are often times the catalysts for her inspiration. With the incorporation of assorted percussion and various instruments like the ukulele, Shruti box, harmonica and glockenspiel, the trio delivers “an enchanting bucolic sound” (– Musicalshapes blog) and a remarkable live performance.   kindlewood is currently writing and recording the follow up to Desiderium due later this year.
