March 26, 2021—The Peter Frampton Band’s tribute to David Bowie’s “Loving The Alien” is the latest track to be revealed off their forthcoming album Frampton Forgets the Words. The performance video, which premiered yesterday on Grammy.com, features personal photos of Bowie and Frampton together as well as archival MTV footage. Watch/share the video HERE.

 

Frampton Forgets The Words, out April 23 on UMe, includes instrumental versions of some of Frampton’s favorite songs and is the follow up to his 2007 Grammy Award-winning instrumental album, Fingerprints. 

 

“Loving The Alien” follows the release of the band’s version of Roxy Music’s “Avalon,” of which Rolling Stone notes, “Frampton and his band’s version doesn’t stray too far from the 1982 original, with his guitar a stand-in for Bryan Ferry’s inimitable vocals,” and Radiohead’s “Reckoner,” which continues to receive critical acclaim from SPIN, Stereogum, Guitar World and more.  

 

Frampton Forgets the Words is co-produced by Frampton and Chuck Ainlay and was  recorded/mixed at Frampton’s own Studio Phenix in Nashville. With his storied 1954 Les Paul Phenix—which was lost in a plane crash in 1980 and recovered more than 30 years later—  Frampton brings virtuosic guitar playing to songs by George Harrison, Stevie Wonder, Lenny Kravitz and more. Frampton notes, “This album is a collection of ten of my favorite pieces of music. My guitar is also a voice and I have always enjoyed playing my favorite vocal lines that we all know and love. These tracks are my great band and me paying tribute to the original creators of this wonderful music. So much fun to do and I really hope you enjoy it too.”

 

Peter Frampton is among the most celebrated guitarists in rock history. At 18, he co-founded one of the first supergroups, Humble Pie. By 22, he was touring incessantly and making use of the talk box which would become his signature guitar effect. He’s collaborated with such legendary artists as George Harrison, David Bowie, Jerry Lee Lewis and Ringo Starr, among many others, and has toured with the likes of Stevie Nicks, Greg Allman, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Cheap Trick, and the Steve Miller Band. In 2014 he was inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame. 

 

His 2019 album All Blues (UMe), was #1 for fifteen weeks on Billboard’s Blues Chart, and his autobiography Do You Feel Like I Do?: A Memoir, released last October via Hachette Books, debuted on The New York Times Bestsellers list. His 1976 album, Frampton Comes Alive! remains one of the top-selling live records of all time and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame last year.

Here is breaking news on the forthcoming release of 'Do You Feel Like I Do?', a memoir by Peter Frampton. I saw Peter Frampton perform in January 2019 during the NAMM Show in Anaheim, California and he was fantastic. He performed several solo hits, and also shared the stage with several other notable stars including ZZ Top's Billy F Gibbons. It was truly a memorable and once-in-a-lifetime experience. Les Paul Innovation Award at 34^th Annual NAMM TEC Awards

GRAMMY® award-winning guitarist, singer, songwriter, and innovator Peter Frampton will receive the prestigious Les Paul Innovation Award at the 34^th Annual NAMM Technical Excellence & Creativity Awards (NAMM TEC Awards), being held Saturday, January 26, 2019, in Anaheim, CA. The award is given to those individuals who personify the innovative thinking of Les Paul, the Father of Modern of Music. The Les Paul Foundation partners with NAMM each year to honor the individuals that have set the highest standards of excellence in the creative application of recording technology, which also celebrates the legacy of the late, great Les Paul.

Frampton notes, “It is a distinct honor to receive the Les Paul Innovation Award. I would say that many of my career highlights occurred while holding an instrument in my hands that bears Les Paul’s name. I was lucky enough to know him personally, and I owe him so much. He was a wonderful character as well as a genius! An incredible guitar player as well as the inventor of so much music technology. Les changed the way we record forever. I can only hope that I’ve been able to make a fraction of the positive impact that Les Paul made in his iconic career.”

Frampton is one of music’s renaissance men, having begun a career in his early teens, and still making his mark today in the areas of recording and touring. A multi-platinum-selling artist, he recently celebrated the 42^nd anniversary of his fifth solo album, Frampton Comes Alive!, an album that remains one of the top-selling live records of all time with over 17 million copies sold worldwide. In 2007 he won the GRAMMY award for “Best Pop Instrumental Album” for Fingerprints and in 2014 was inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame.

“Peter Frampton remains one of the most skillful and celebrated artists in rock history. Frampton’s storied career began at 16 as the lead singer and guitarist for the British band The Herd. By 18, he co-founded one of the first supergroups – the seminal rock act Humble Pie. His touring years have included work with a whos-who of the top names in music, such as David Bowie, Stevie Nicks, Gregg Allman, Ringo Starr, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Cheap Trick, Steve Miller Band, Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings, and many others. Additionally, he took his eponymous Peter Frampton's Guitar Circus on the road for two years with special guests B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Vince Gill, Larry Carlton, Robert Randolph, Don Felder (formerly of The Eagles), Dean DeLeo (Stone Temple Pilots), Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Sonny Landreth, Robert Cray, and Roger McGuinn (The Byrds).

His session work includes collaborations with artists who have made their mark on the industry including George Harrison, Harry Nilsson, Jerry Lee Lewis, John Entwistle, Mike McCready, and Matt Cameron (Pearl Jam), among many others.

Frampton’s talent has also stretched beyond music and into the realm of television and film. He was called upon by Oscar-winning writer/director Cameron Crowe to serve as technical advisor for the film Almost Famous (2000) and even appeared in the film and composed several songs for the soundtrack. Frampton has appeared as himself in The Simpsons and Family Guy.

Les Paul invented the solid body electric guitar, multi-track recording, overdubbing, echo, reverb and numerous other recording techniques. Without Les Paul, the music industry would not be what it is today. He is often called the “Father of Modern Music,” “The Wizard of Waukesha” and even the “Thomas Edison of Music.” Les founded the Foundation prior to his passing and wanted to inspire young people to invent, create, innovate, and get involved in music while exploring their own creative ideas. Today, The Les Paul Foundation works with organizations throughout the country in support of music education, engineering, and medical research. The Les Paul Innovation Award at NAMM and the Les Paul Spirit Award are two of the most prestigious awards celebrated by the Foundation.

With the honor, Frampton joins Jackson Browne, Joe Perry (Aerosmith), Don Was, Slash, Todd Rundgren, Pete Townshend, Steve Vai, and others, who have received the Les Paul Innovation Award since it began in 1991.

Announced early this year, Leslie Ann Jones, the Grammy-winning groundbreaking engineer, producer, and Director of Music and Scoring for Skywalker Sound, will be inducted into the NAMM TEC Hall of Fame that same night. Jones joins luminaries Rose Mann Cherney, Skunk Baxter, Hal Blaine, Jack Douglas, Nathan East, Geoff Emerick, and others with her induction, the industry’s highest honor for pioneers of audio technology and the music industry’s most accomplished producers and audio technicians.

The NAMM TEC Awards are held during The NAMM Show, the global gathering of music, sound and event technology industries, in Anaheim, California, January 24-27, 2019. They arebestowed annually in honor of the many individuals, companies and technical innovations used in sound recordings, films, broadcast television and video games. With Record Store Day fast approaching, you won’t find this special compilation LP by one of the UK’s most iconic bands in any store on April 21, 2018. Except one. Humble Pie On 79th Street will only be available from Pie & Vinyl.

Obvious? Or are we bucking the trend of Record Store Day in the manner that Andrew Loog Oldham, legendary founder of Immediate Records and Rolling Stones manager might have done? Or does this one-off LP celebrate the spirit of RSD more than any other release?

Inspired by the beautiful pied-piperess Katherine who led us all to Pie & Vinyl and discoveries that linked her vibrant, musical town of Portsmouth & Southsea, an amazing record store and the timeless sounds of Humble Pie to dramatic events in Southsea over 40 years ago that culminated in a truly local effort to press the LP in Portsmouth and have it on sale in Southsea for Saturday April 21.

My favorite reissues, retrospectives and special sets of 2013

Amidst a parade of wonderful new studio albums that saw their release in 2013 came an equally-strong number of reissues, retrospectives, historic live collections and more. Here are a few of my favorites…

1. The Beatles, Live at the BBC (Capitol)
In an age where seemingly everything ever recorded by the Fab Four has been issued (with the obvious exception of the band's Let It Be documentary), imagine the surprise of hearing dozens of live tracks recorded by the Beatles that were broadcast by the BBC in the UK between March 1962 and June 1965. Highlights on the reissued version of the original Live at the BBC (originally released in 1994) include a rollicking take on Chuck Berry's "Carol" and the only recording by John, Paul, George and Ringo playing the tuneful Lennon-McCartney composition "I'll Be On My Way." Volume 2 is also a gem, featuring a fiery version of Berry's "I'm Talking About You" that was a direct-to-airwaves performance that is thankfully heard again. A lovely performance of the standard "Beautiful Dreamer" is also a standout on the second volume.

2. Humble Pie, Rockin' the Fillmore: The Complete Recordings (Omnivore Recordings)
The late '60s and early '70s produced a number of fantastic British blues-rocks bands including Led Zeppelin and Ten Years After.  The recent release of Humble Pie's Rockin' the Fillmore: The Complete Recordings has cast a renewed focus on the British band co-founded by Steve Marriott and Peter Frampton. The four-disc set features all audio recordings pulled from Humble Pie's four shows played over the course of two consecutive nights at the legendary Fillmore East in May 1971. Highlights include the textured versions of "I Walk On Gilded Splinters" and bone-crunching rocker "I Don't Need No Doctor."

3. Three O'Clock, The Hidden World Revealed (Omnivore Recordings)
The so-called "Paisley Underground" was a psychedelic-meets-melody rock scene that struck Southern California in the early 1980s, and Three O'Clock was one of its most powerful proponents. The band's triumphant return to Coachella earlier this year may have been fueled by work on the newly-released "The Hidden World Revealed," which features 20 sterling tracks (10 of them previously unissued). Those who buy the CD also get a colorful booklet with liner notes from band members Michael Querico and Louis Gutierrez.

4. Keane, The Best Of (Island Records)
Since catching Keane soar at Coachella back in 2005, I've been a fervid fan of the rousing English alternative outfit. Now comes the first-ever greatest hits collection from the group, celebrating the first decade of Keane's discography complete with two discs full of winning singles, sterling B sides, a live track and even three new songs (including the captivating new single "Higher Than The Sun").

5. Alex Chilton, Electricity by Candlelight (Bar None Records)
Although Alex Chilton originally achieved fame in his teens as lead singer of the Box Tops in the 1960s, it was his role as a member of the seminal '70s power pop band Big Star that earned him a permanent place among rock's elite. Now Chilton, who died at age 59 after suffering a heart attack on March 17, 2010, is being celebrated via the release of a powerful live solo performance recorded at the Knitting Factory in New York City on Feb. 13, 1997. After a blackout and loss of power, most of the concertgoers headed home. Those who didn't were rewarded when Chilton came out and proceeded to play an acoustic performance by candlelight that featured Loudon Wainwright III's "Motel Blues," the Beach Boys' "Wouldn't It Be Nice" and "Surfer Girl," and more than a dozen other artfully reworked covers played with an authenticity  for the ages.

6. Neil Young, Live at the Cellar Door (Reprise)
Neil Young has never stopped exploring or trying new things, but listening to the singer-songwriter's Live at the Cellar Door recorded in the fall of 1970, it's simply magical to hear potent performances of many of his finest early gems and realize he was among the original pioneers blending rock, folk and country into timeless masterworks. "Cinnamon Girl" was performed on piano (rather than the now-standard hard rock guitar version), lending the song a decidedly haunting vibe. Among the other classics captured on tape were "Only Love Can Break Your Heart," "Old Man" (which wouldn't be widely heard until "Harvest" came out two years later) and "I Am A Child."

7. Alvin Lee, The Last Show (Rainman Records)
In the late 1960s and early 1970s, no British band journeyed to America more often than Ten Years After. Indeed, the quartet visited the United States 28 times between 1968 and 1974. Led by trailblazing singer-guitarist Alvin Lee, the genre-busting band blended rock, blues and jazz in ways that remain relevant today. The band's mind-blowing performance of "I'm Going Home" at Woodstock in August 1969 showcased Lee's virtuoso skills on lead guitar and his powerful baritone vocals. Lee died unexpectedly on March 6, 2013, but his final concert performance recorded in Raalte, Holland 10 months before his untimely passing is now available on a wonderful 14-track audio CD. Featuring a version of the iconic "I'm Going Home" as well as other Ten Years After staples and solo gems, the packaging for the aptly-titled The Last Show includes photos taken at that final show as well as personal notes from his wife, band mates and even fans.

8. Emerson Lake & Palmer, Live In Montreal 1977 (Shout! Factory)
More than 35 years after it was staged, Emerson Lake & Palmer's epic Aug. 26, 1977 concert at Montreal's Olympic Stadium was released. Live In Montreal 1977 captures the legendary supergroup (Keith Emerson, Greg Lake, Carl Palmer) performing with a mighty 70-piece orchestra in front of its largest-ever stadium audience, playing potent versions of classics including "Lucky Man" and "Karn Evil 9."

9. Tommy Bolin, Whirlwind (Purple Pyramid Records/Cleopatra Records)
Although he was only 25 when he died Dec. 4, 1976, guitarist Tommy Bolin nevertheless managed to make a lasting mark as a member of Zephyr (1969-1971), The James Gang (1973-74) and Deep Purple (1975-76). Now comes the aptly-titled Whirlwind, a 2-disc audio collection of rare, unreleased recordings recorded by the groundbreaking guitarist between 1972 and 1975. 10. The Lumineers, The Lumineers: Deluxe Edition (Dualtone Music Group)

When it comes to super duos, the unlikely teaming of Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs has been equally special. In 2006, Sid and Susie released their musical love letter to the '60s, Under the Covers, Vol. 1, which showcased artful and exuberant versions of some of that decades best songs.
