Sights and Sounds: The Rolling Stones, Matthew Sweet, Jason Falkner

Two fantastic live albums featuring the Rolling Stones, an eagerly-anticipated return from power pop hero Matthew Sweet and an under-the-radar instrumental tribute to The Beatles courtesy of Jason Falkner make for an essential mix of releases available now.

Artist: The Rolling Stones
Title: Ladies & Gentlemen… The Rolling Stones (Eagle Rock Entertainment)
You might like if you enjoy: The Rolling Stones, Mick Taylor
Tell me more: Previously available only as a stand-alone DVD release, it is wonderful that Ladies & Gentlemen… The Rolling Stones is finally available on audio CD and digitally (as an MP3 or via streaming). The 16-track performance captured during the band's four-night stint in Texas during the "Exile On Main Street" tour in 1972 stands as one of the British band's best performances. Indeed, many fans of the Rolling Stones consider the band's late '60s and early '70s material their strongest, and this performance is filled with standout tracks from their catalog delivered with passion and firepower. Listen no further than the wild "Brown Sugar," jaunty "Happy" (love Mick Taylor's guitar work on that one), introspective "You Can't Always Get What You Want" and rowdy "Street Fighting Man." Information: eagle-rock.com.

Artists: Muddy Walters and The Rolling Stones
Title: Checkerboard Lounge: Live Chicago 1981 (Eagle Rock Entertainment)
You might like if you enjoy: The Rolling Stones, Buddy Guy, Muddy Waters
Tell me more: While the Rolling Stones' 2016 Blue & Lonesome celebrated the band's blues influences, a unique trek to Buddy Guy's intimate club in Chicago in November 1981 showcased a more immersive commemoration of the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers' links with blues music. In the middle of the band's ambitious American tour that year (which attracted approximately 3 million concertgoers), the Rolling Stones dropped by the Checkerboard Lounge to see one of the group's most influential heroes, Muddy Waters, perform. It wasn't long before Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood and Ian Stewart were on stage performing with the legend. The quality is excellent, as are the loose and authentic performances. Standouts abound, with Muddy Waters'  leading the charge on "You Don't Have to Go," members of the Stones joining Waters for animated takes on the bona fide blues classics "Baby Please Don't Go" and "Hoochie Coochie Man," and a true all-star ensemble with Waters and members of the Stones joined by Chicago blues greats Buddy Guy and Junior Wells for a frantic "Got My Mojo Workin'." Information: eagle-rock.com.

Artist: Matthew Sweet
Title: Tomorrow Forever (Honeycomb Hideout/RED)
You might like if you enjoy: Marshall Crenshaw, the Bangles, the Raspberries
Tell me more: Prior to the release of Tomorrow Forever, power pop hero Matthew Sweet had not issued a new studio album since 2011. "Tomorrow Forever" finds Sweet back with a welcome vengeance, bolstered by a marathon-length 17-song collection that fits on a single audio CD disc but comes packaged as a double LP if you purchase it on vinyl. Sweet dealt with a number of life-changing events leading up to the release of Tomorrow Forever (including the death of his mother and a move from Los Angeles to Omaha, Nebraska), and there is a definite depth and purpose to the songs this time around. The driving "Trick," swirling psychedelic-edged "Entangled," tender "You Knew Me" (a beautiful tribute to his mother) and the longing rocker "Bittersweet." In addition to his long-time rhythm section (bassist Paul Chastain and drummer Ric Menck), guests on "Tomorrow Forever" include Debbi Peterson (drummer of the Bangles), Jason Victor (Dream Syndicate, Steve Wynn & the Miracle 3), Gary Louris (the Jayhawks), Val McCallum (Jackson Browne) and keyboardist Rod Argent (of The Zombies). Information: matthewsweet.com.

Artist: Jason Falkner
Title: Bedtime With The Beatles: Instrumental Versions of Classic Beatles Songs (Sony Wonder)
You might like if you enjoy: The Beatles, Laurence Juber
Tell me more: Thanks to Jason Falkner's continuing high-profile role as a touring member of Beck's band and his acclaimed collaboration with R. Stevie Moore earlier this year (Make It Be), now is an excellent time to catch up on Falkner's previous releases. I was recently introduced to Falkner's 2001 release Bedtime With The Beatles, which features 11 instrumental versions of Fab Four classics. The Beatles' time-tested tunes are solid enough to have fueled an endless parade of tributes, but it are Falkner's singularly dazzling talents as multi-instrumentalist and arranger that make these artful versions rank alongside Laurence Juber's fingerstyle guitar recordings as the finest instrumental interpretations of Lennon/McCartney compositions I've heard. A lush "Across The Universe," haunting "I'm Only Sleeping," dreamy baroque take of "Here There And Everywhere" and gentle guitar-meets-keyboards dance of "In My Life" are among my favorites. But the truth is every track on the disc is outstanding. Information: JasonFalkner.net.

New releases provide time machine-worthy ride

From the ’50s rock ‘n’ roll-minded cult classic flick Daddy-O featured on Mystery Science Theater 3000 and a stunning look back at The Rolling Stones to the final release from power-pop champions The Knack and an ambitious look at the Continental Drifters, July has racked up an eclectic wealth of sonic riches.

Artist: The Rolling Stones
Title: From the Vault  Hyde Park Live 1969 (Eagle Rock Entertainment)
You might like if you enjoy: The Rolling Stones, Mick Taylor, Keith Richards
Tell me more: While the release of The Rolling Stones' From The Vault: The Marquee – Live in 1971 earlier this summer captured the band performing at an intimate club in 1971, the new From the Vault  Hyde Park Live 1969 (available on DVD and Blu-ray) features the same stellar Stones line-up of Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, Mick Taylor and Bill Wyman in their first public performance together. Captured at London's Hyde Park on July 5, 1969 (and only two days after the death of former Stones guitarist Brian Jones), the concert also marked the Rolling Stones' first full-length concert appearance in two years. From the Vault  Hyde Park Live 1969 is more than a concert, offering up the full 8-song set along with fascinating crowd footage (look closely and you can catch Paul McCartney), interviews with a young Mick Jagger and the debut of young lead guitar great Mick Taylor. A fascinating and essential moment in the Rolling Stones' impressive career.  Information: eagle-rock.com.
Get 'From the Vault: Hyde Park 1969' here

DVD Title: Mystery Science Theater 3000: XXXIII (Shout! Factory)
You might like if you enjoy: Mystery Science Theater 3000, Svengoolie
Tell me more: What possible reason would compel any sane person to watch Daddy-O, an awful 1958 movie that somehow tapped into the explosion of early rock 'n' roll and hot rod culture while getting it all horribly wrong. Look no further than the first of four must-see films skewered on the newly-released Mystery Science Theater 3000: XXXIII collection. On Daddy-O, aspiring rock singer Phil "Daddy-O" Sandifer (played by singer-actor Dick Contino) somehow is able to pick up on girls, get pulled into a drug-running scheme and lose his best friend thanks to a solid story that somehow never flies on film. The most noteworthy aspect of the movie itself is that it provided young composer John Williams with his first-ever feature film score, while Joel and his two bots are able to entertain via their sharp-witted zingers and commentary. The other three films that get a well-deserved Satellite of Love treatment include Earth Vs. The Spider, Teen-Age Crime Wave and Agent for H.A.R.M. Information: shoutfactory.com.
Purchase 'Mystery Science Theater 3000: XXXIII' here

Artist: The Knack
Title: Live From the Rock 'n' Roll Fun House (Omnivore Recordings)
You might like if you enjoy: The Knack, Fountains of Wayne
Tell me more: Providing the final chapter in The Knack's long and acclaimed career, 2001's Live from the Rock 'n' Roll Fun House has been lovingly reissued and expanded courtesy of Omnivore Recordings. While the 17-song set includes the Los Angeles-based quartet's biggest hits ("That's What the Little Girls Do," "Good Girls Don't" "My Sharona"), the high-octane performance also shines via career-spanning material including the melodic "Can I Borrow a Kiss," driving "Pop Is Dead" and the set-ending rollicking medley of "Tequila"/"Break On Through." Sadly, Live From the Rock 'n' Roll Fun House would mark The Knack's final release; lead singer-rhythm guitarist Doug Fieger died after a long battle with cancer on Feb. 14, 2010. Information: omnivorerecordings.com.
Get 'Live From The Rock 'n' Roll Fun House' here

Artist: Continental Drifters
Title: Drifted: In The Beginning & Beyond (Omnivore Recordings)
You might like if you enjoy: Dawes, the dB's, the Jayhawks
Tell me more: The two-disc Continental Drifters compilation Drifted: In The Beginning & Beyond is astounding, with the Americana-styled collective's early course captured perfectly via a number of sweet demos, alternate tracks, live recordings and more. Featuring a number of talented members over the decade-long history of the group, the far-flung material ranges from the rousing folk rock-tinged "Who We Are, Where We Live" (featuring Vicki Peterson's strong soprano) and Southern rocker "Side Steppin' the Fire" to a freewheeling take on Gram Parsons' "A Song For You" (featuring Peter Holsapple and Susan Cowsill providing lead and harmony vocals) and harmony-filled enthralling take on Neil Young's wonderful "When You Dance I Can Really Love." The one bond that magically binds all the material across the 33-track collection is the strength of song craft and gifted touch used by the musicians to bring these songs to lifeInformation: omnivorerecordings.com.

Music-minded Gift Guide: Blu-rays, DVDs and albums aplenty

With Christmas and Hanukkah rapidly approaching, you've come to the right place if you are looking for interesting gift ideas for that favorite music fan. I'll have more picks in another column slated to run later this week, but there are more than enough choice releases here to start filling your shopping cart...

Let's kick off with some noteworthy albums and audio box sets.

Artists: Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs
Title: Under the Covers, Vol. 3 (Shout! Factory)
You might like if you enjoy: R.E.M., The Bangles, The English Beat
Tell me more: There have been plenty of musical supergroups over the years ranging from ASIA and Bad Company to the Traveling Wilburys. When it comes to super duos, the unlikely teaming of Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs has been equally special. In 2006, Sid and Susie released their musical love letter to the '60s, Under the Covers, Vol. 1, which showcased artful and exuberant versions of some of that decades best songs. With the release of a similarly-minded Under the Covers, Vol. 2 tackling '70s songs in 2009, fans had been hoping for an 1980s-mining disc and it has fully arrived via the 14-track Under the Covers, Vol. 3. Highlights here include a buoyant take on R.E.M.'s "Sitting Still," introspective reworking of the Dave Edmunds fave "Girls Talk" and captivating take on Roxy Music's "More Than This." Information: www.ShoutFactory.com
Get Under the Covers, Vol. 3 On Amazon Here

Artist: Humble Pie Title: Rockin' the Fillmore: The Complete Recordings (Omnivore Recordings)
You might like if you enjoy: Peter Frampton, the Black Crowes
Tell me more: The late '60s and early '70s produced a number of fantastic British blues-rocks bands including Led Zeppelin and Ten Years After.  The recent release of Humble Pie's Rockin' the Fillmore: The Complete Recordings has (thankfully and about time) cast a renewed focus on the British band co-founded by Steve Marriott and Peter Frampton. The four-disc set features all audio recordings pulled from Humble Pie's four shows played over the course of two consecutive nights at the legendary Fillmore East in May 1971. Highlights include the textured versions of "I Walk On Gilded Splinters" and bone-crunching rocker "I Don't Need No Doctor." Information: http://omnivorerecordings.com.

Artist: Herb Alpert
Title: Steppin' Out
You might like if you enjoy: Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass
Tell me more: Looking back at the 1960s, it's easy to believe that seminal rockers such as The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix and the Byrds completely owned the Billboard charts. But artists working outside of rock were also able to make their mark. Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass, headed by Los Angeles-born trumpeter Herb Alpert, embarked on a career more than 50 years ago with the success of his 1962 hit "The Lonely Bull." Now the 7-time Grammy-winning artist is back with this unique blend of Latin-tinged pop and jazz courtesy of Steppin' Out. The 16-track disc features choice cuts from his own catalog and the Great American Songbook while he is joined by his wife Grammy-winning singer Lani Hall, as well as keyboardist Bill Cantos, drummer Michael Shapiro, bassist Hussain Jiffry, acoustic guitarist Ramon Stagnaro and a guest turn from lead guitarist Carlos Santana. Here are some of the new DVD and/or Blu-ray releases available now.

Factory has released a a 6-DVD set featuring more than 1,000 minutes of concert performances and bonus features from the storied shows. Artist: Rush
Title: Clockwork Angels Tour (Anthem/Zoe Vision/Rounder Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Rush, Dream Theater
Tell me more: Anyone who caught Rush at any of the trio's Clockwork Angels shows in 2012 or early 2013 knows the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers' three-hour concerts were each a tour de force. Now the band's 11-month world tour in support of the Canadian outfit's wonderful Clockwork Angels concept album will live on thanks to the release of the aptly-titled Clockwork Angels Tour (available on DVD and Blu-ray). In addition to the concert itself, bonus features include a soundcheck recording of "Limelight," a tour documentary and much more. Information: http://www.rush.com.

Artist: The Rolling Stones
Title: Sweet Summer Sun - Hyde Park Live (Eagle Rock Entertainment)
You might like if you enjoy: The Rolling Stones, Mick Taylor
Tell me more: It's hard to keep a great band down. More than 50 years after forming in London in 1962, the Rolling Stones returned home this summer to perform in front of 100,000 at Hyde Park. The two-hour 2013 concert not only featured the band playing rousing versions of some of their most beloved songs ("Brown Sugar," "Happy," "Miss You," "Gimme Shelter"), but found Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts and Ronnie Wood joined by former Stones guitarist Mick Taylor (whose first gig with the group was at the original 1969 Hyde Park concert) for the blues-rock opus "Midnight Rambler" and set ending "Satisfaction." Sweet Summer Sun - Hyde Park Live showcases a legendary band that despite all the odds - and years - still can deliver in full. Information: http://www.eaglerockent.com

Title: Live at Luna Park (Eagle Rock Entertainment)
You might like if you enjoy: Rush, Iron Maiden
Tell me more: Like Rush, Dream Theater has amassed a large and zealous following through its marathon-length performances showcasing virtuoso prog-rock chops. Filmed over the course of two nights at the Luna Park Arena in Buenos Aires, Argentina in August 2012, Dream Theater's Live at Luna Park will surely please diehard fans of the American quintet while introducing the otherworldly power of the band to listeners just discovering the power of progressive rock. Artist: Joe Bonamassa
Title: Tour de Force – Live in London (JRR Adventures)
You might like if you enjoy: Walter Trout,  Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton
Tell me more: Arguably rock's most exciting living electric guitarist, Joe Bonamassa has released four DVD titles (also available on Blu-ray) filmed earlier this year capturing the ax master at four iconic London venues. Each of the performances find the freewheeling guitar hero exploring a different corner of the universe. The intimate Borderline features a hard-edged heavy rock approach, blues is highlighted at Shepherd's Bush Empire; rock 'n' roll is celebrated via a night at Hammersmith Apollo and a mix of winning acoustic and electric music (including his most beloved material) is highlighted at Royal Albert Hall. Artist: George Thorogood & The Destroyers
Title: Live at Montreux 2013
You might like if you enjoy: Chuck Berry, Elmore James, Bo Diddley
Tell me more: After more than 35 years classic rocker George Thorogood is still having as much fun as ever. As evidenced by his spirited performance with the Destroyers on the newly-issued Live at Montreux 2013 DVD (also available on Blu-ray and as an audio CD release too) the singer-guitarist was not about to waste his long-overdue debut at the legendary Montreux Jazz Festival. Kicking things off with "Rock Party" and firing right into "Who Do You Love?," his set including rollicking versions of "I Drink Alone," "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer" and "Bad to the Bone." The DVD also comes with a colorful booklet detailing Thorogood's history leading up to the July 2013 concert. Information: http://www.eaglerockent.com
