As they lead the charge for this week’s Number 1 spot in the UK (set to be their third consecutive U.K Number 1 album), British band elbow has announced they will be returning to North America in January 2020 for a handful of west coast dates in California. Starting on January 18, they will be kicking things off at the House of Blues in San Diego then making stops at The Wiltern in Los Angeles, Fox Theatre in Oakland and The Observatory in Santa Ana. Last Friday, elbow released their eighth studio album ‘Giants Of All Sizes’ (Polydor/The Verve Label Group), to vast critical acclaim across the globe. Praised as "rich, expansive and inventive" by NPR who spoke to lead-man and lyricist Guy Garvey on All Things Considered recently [Listen HERE], this remarkable full-length continues to hold the Manchester four-piece well and truly at the top of their game and dear in the hearts of fans all over the world. ‘Giants of All Sizes’ was recorded at Hamburg’s Clouds Hill Studio, The Dairy in Brixton, 604 Studios in Vancouver and Blueprint Studios in Salford, with additional recording taking place at various band member’s home studios in Manchester. Lead singer and lyricist Guy Garvey describes the album as “an angry, old blue lament which finds its salvation in family, friends, the band and new life.” It is a record that lyrically takes in moments of deep personal loss whilst reflecting its times by confronting head-on, the specters of injustice and division not just in the UK but across the world. It is a record that could only have been made in the 21st Century.
Given such bleak, if ultimately redeemed subject matter, it is also perversely the most relaxed record which elbow have made in some time. On ‘Giants Of All Sizes’ each band member extended their usual process of working on demos alone and followed their vision to its conclusion rather than, as Craig Potter puts it, ‘taking the edges off things to find compromise’. In tandem with this, they returned to playing live in the studio, encouraged to experiment with the banks of analogue equipment at Clouds Hill in Northern Germany, giving songs a looser, more live feel.
The result is the most starkly dynamic record from the band in recent times, “sonically unabashed”, as Guy would have it. Whilst album closer ‘Weightless’ has the gossamer melodies and communal harmonies for which the band have latterly been known, this album echoes earlier elbow work at times whilst also breaking new ground.
‘White Noise White Heat’ is motorik, metal machine soul driven by a vocal that is rage incarnate, ‘Doldrums’ mixes John Carpenter with The Plastic Ono Band to brilliantly disturbing effect and ‘On Deronda Road’hitches stark bass beats and glitches to an ad-hoc choir. ‘Empires’ delivers dark resignation via an insidious melody and ‘Seven Veils’ continues the subversion by inverting the perception of elbow as a band for lovers into a band for haters, a double-barreled fuck-you song par excellence. ‘The Delayed 3:15’ marries mariachi guitars to jazz dynamics, Morricone via Buddy Rich, and ‘My Trouble’ is a clockwork, analogue shuffle housing a delicate melody that builds over the course of the song into a fragile monolith to the power of love.
Lead track, ‘Dexter & Sinister’, released on 10” ahead of the album, encapsulates the whole album. A seven-minute musical journey that blends deep bass grooves, sudden keyboard stabs, dislocated piano and guitar runs and soul stylings then abruptly shifts gear, parts the storm clouds and takes wing, flying towards the heat of the sun. It is the soundtrack for these ‘hope free, faith free, charity free days’, a denial of the divine and a reconciliation, two songs in one song, two emotions for one emotion, human, fragile and brilliant, like the album which it opens.
As with their previous four studio albums, ‘Giants Of All Sizes’ was produced and mixed by keyboard player Craig Potter. Guests across the album include Jesca Hoop, The Plumedores and South London newcomer Chilli Chilton.

elbow Release New Track "Dexter & Sinister." Sign To Verve In North America
Great to hear new music from elbow...
elbow has returned today with a spellbinding 7-minute track titled ‘Dexter & Sinister,’ out now on Verve Label Group in North America. The track is available across all digital platforms as well as on limited edition one sided 10” vinyl with lyric etching on the B-side [buy HERE]. Listen HERE.
Featuring guest vocals from Jesca Hoop, Dexter & Sinister’ is an epic melding of ominous, creeping grooves and deity denying lyrics that bursts into a sweeping second phase of lament and redemption. Initially recorded at Clouds Hill Studios, Hamburg, a building crammed with old, beautifully preserved, analogue equipment that encouraged the band to experiment and play live in the room, an essential part of its genesis according to keyboardist and producer Craig Potter: ‘We haven’t sat around and played like that in a long time. The looseness in the track definitely comes from us playing live in the room and, on the second part, we decided not to play to a click to really allow the tune to breathe.”
The track takes its title from heraldry where Dexter (Right) and Sinister (Left) represent the two sides of an escutcheon bearing a coat of arms. ‘Dexter & Sinister’ is, in lyricist and singer Guy Garvey’s own words: “A great, big, bewildered question dealing with my feelings on Brexit, the loss of family and friends and the general sense of disaffection you see all around at the moment.”
Two songs in one song, two countries in one country, divided by that ongoing question over the UK’s future, and hope at life and despair at death in equal measure. ‘Dexter & Sinister’ is out everywhere now.
In other news, elbow recently inked a deal with the legendary Verve Label Group for North America.

Mark Knopfler sets 2015 North American Tour

Mark Knopfler announces 2015 North American Tour
New album 'Tracker' set for release on March 17, 2015
Lead single 'Beryl' streaming worldwide on Vevo
Legendary musician and songwriter Mark Knopfler will celebrate the release of his new record, Tracker, due March 17 on Verve Records, with a 36-city North American tour that kicks off in Vancouver on September 10 and continues through the end of October.
Fans that purchase tickets to ‘An Evening with Mark Knopfler and Band’ online will receive a physical copy of Tracker for each pair of tickets purchased. Fan club presales begin January 27. Public on sales begin January 30.
Says Knopfler, ‘Part of the fun is thinking what you might have a go at, for a new tour. For me, that’s part of the joy of it, getting that little crew together again, and setting sail once again. It’s a real adventure.’ Knopfler has always viewed touring as the final part of the process running from songwriting through recording and ending up on the road performing old and new songs. He now writes more music while actually on the road.
‘The songs ‘Lights of Taormina’ and ‘Silver Eagle’ came into being partly through my trips in Europe and the U.S. with Bob Dylan.’

Tracker marks the eight solo recording from Knopfler, who Rolling Stone praises as one of the ‘100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time.’ The single ‘Beryl’ is now streaming worldwide at Vevo here: http://po.st/Byrlv. Recorded at his own British Grove Studios in West London, Tracker includes 11 new songs inspired by a wide range of subjects including Beryl Bainbridge and Basil Bunting. The album was producer by Knopfler and his long-time friend and collaborator Guy Fletcher who also plays keyboard on the record. In addition, Tracker features Mike McGoldrick on whistle and flute, John McCusker on fiddle, Glenn Worf on bass and Ian Thomas on drums. Guest musicians include Ruth Moody (from The Wailin’ Jennys) on vocals, Nigel Hitchcock on saxophone and Phil Cunningham on accordion.
Tracker will be available on CD, double vinyl, deluxe CD with four bonus tracks, and a box set that will include the album on both CD and vinyl with a bonus CD featuring six extra tracks, a DVD with an exclusive short film directed by Henrik Hansen and an interview with Knopfler where he talks about the new record. Sleeve notes have been specially written by acclaimed U.S. author Richard Ford and also contain a numbered art print and six photographic prints.
A multiple Grammy award winner as the lead vocalist and songwriter for Dire Straits, Knopfler has released seven solo albums as well as recording Neck And Neck with one of his guitar heroes, Chet Atkins and collaborated with Emmylou Harris on All The Roadrunning. He has created soundtracks for Local Hero and The Princess Bride and is currently working on a new film, Altamira. In addition to producing his own records Knopfler has also produced albums for Bob Dylan and Randy Newman amongst others. He was made an OBE in 1999 and was given the prestigious ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ at the Ivor Novellos in 2012.
