The album, when first released, sparked Mavis' solo career and launched her into the musical mainstream. Have A Little Faith is an exhilarating collection of timeless, uplifting songs deeply seated in Mavis’ faith and spirituality. It has now been remastered and will come in a deluxe gatefold jacket with expanded artwork. The set also features a spirited remembrance of how the record came to be by Mavis herself. The two 12-inch records, pressed on silver vinyl, will spin at 45 rpm, and will deliver the best possible sound. From her early days sharing lead vocals with her groundbreaking family gospel group, The Staple Singers, to her storied solo recordings, Mavis Staples is an inspirational force in modern popular culture and music. So it was surprising, upon the passing of Mavis' father -- family patriarch and Staple Singers leader Pops Staples -- in 2000, that Mavis' future was uncertain. She self-financed and recorded her own solo album, and after being turned down by major labels unable to see the commercial appeal of this legend’s fresh, genre-busting approach to spiritual music, it was embraced by Alligator Records. The label's unbridled enthusiasm in working the album to press, radio and the public helped Mavis fulfill her dream and ignite her solo career. Sights and Sounds: Biffy Clyro, The Gloaming, 'Day of the Dead' tribute

Biffy Clyro are set to release their seventh studio album titled Ellipis on July 8, 2016 via Warner Bros. As is tradition, writing sessions for the album saw Biffy Clyro -Simon Neil (vocals/guitar) and the Johnston brothers James (bass) and Ben (drums) working in the intimate environment of their practice room. They then headed to Los Angeles for recording sessions with producer Rich Coste (Muse, My Chemical Romance, Sigur Ros).

 

Citing influences as diverse as Tears For Fears' Songs From The Big Chair album, DJ Arca and Deafheaven, Simon Neil has described Ellipsis as "more of a punch to the nose than a big cuddle." Lyrically, the album's songs tackle personal issues with the idea of "fighting back" a recurring theme.

 

Such themes are also apparent in the album's visceral first single "Wolves of Winter" which captures Biffy Clyro's famous blend of angular riffs, pummelling rhythms and strident hooks. Says Neil: "'Wolves of Winter' is about us being wolves on a patch and if you come onto that patch, we'll tear you limb-from-limb."

 

An Ellipsis (most commonly depicted as ...) indicates a continuation: in this case, Biffy Clyro's new body of work is an ongoing representation of everything that the band have stood for since first debuting in 2002 with the Blackened Sky album.

 

Ellipsis will be available digitally and on CD and vinyl editions.

 

Opposites saw Biffy Clyro flourish with their first U.K. #1 album and another U.K. Top 10 single with "Black Chandelier". The band's live shows soared to new heights with highlights including debut festival headline sets at Reading, Leeds, Radio 1's Big Weekend, Isle of Wight and T in the Park; a triumphant sold-out UK arena tour; and extensive touring across six continents.

Ranging in age from 30-something to 50-something, that they live in America and Ireland, and have won individual renown as master musicians. Coming together as The Gloaming in 2011, the band have merged the ambiance & drama of Sigur Ros, a virtuosic command of Irish traditional folk forms, and the emotional power of sean-nos traditional singing to create an entirely new world of sound — one some critics have called “a new kind of Irish classical music.” 

On May 20, 2016, 4AD will release Day of the Dead -- a celebration of the Grateful Dead's music created and curated by brothers Aaron and Bryce Dessner of The National. The five songs shared today include the first new music from The War on Drugs since 2014's critically-acclaimed Lost In The Dream with a cover of the Grateful Dead's 1987 hit 'Touch of Grey'. Phosphorescent and Jenny Lewis combine with the backing of the in-house band (featuring 4/5 of the National) that contributed to numerous recordings on the compilation, to cover 1971's 'Sugaree'. Former Grateful Dead member Bruce Hornsby collaborates with Justin Vernon and DeYarmond Edison, Justin's reunited first band including Phil and Brad Cook and Joe Westerlund of Megafaun, for ' Black Muddy River.Courtney Barnett puts her characteristic slant on 'New Speedway Boogie', off the back of numerous accolades for 2015's GRAMMY-nominated album Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit.  For today's finaltaste of the full album, The National cover Bonnie Dobson's 'Morning Dew', a Grateful Dead staple since 1967, one of two songs that they contributed to the compilation.

The compilation is a wide-ranging tribute to the songwriting and experimentalism of the Dead which took four years to record, features over 60 artists from varied musical backgrounds, 59 tracks and is almost 6 hours long. Day of the Dead will be released digitally, on a 5 X CD, and as a limited edition vinyl boxed set. It’s an electrifying time for Mavis Staples. Her much anticipated new album Livin' On A High Note has just been released to critical raves, she picked up her second Grammy Award earlier this week and a feature-length documentary on her life is poised to premiere on HBO on February 29.

The New York Times recently called Staples’ late-career creative output an “extraordinary productive streak” that reaffirms her  “lifelong messages — faith, family, freedom, honesty, perseverance — as she both reaches back to the sound of the Staple Singers and tries some new twists.” Rolling Stone writes, “Staples says she's entering a new chapter. The proof comes in the form of High Note. While the material on Livin' on a High Note draws on the personal and spiritual, there are a few tracks that harken back to the Staple Singers' protest songs.”

Ward-produced Livin' on a High Note, Staples performs an assortment of songs written for just for her by some of today’s greatest songwriters including Nick Cave, Justin Vernon, Neko Case, Ben Harper, Tune-Yards, Benjamin Booker, Aloe Blacc and others. As Newsweek writes, “she always followed the lead of her musician father, Pops, in her long career by staying open to change.”

“I’ve been singing my freedom songs and I wanted to stretch out and sing some songs that were new,” says Mavis. “I told the writers I was looking for some joyful songs. I want to leave something to lift people up.”

Grammy Award-winning Bon Iver immerses 'Austin City Limits' with magic touch

Radiohead kicked things off on the new season of Austin City Limits with an intense, fast-paced concert of experimental rock that set a high bar for those acts who follow in the weeks ahead. On the next episode of the legendary music series set to air this weekend, Bon Iver delivers an equally enthralling series by immersing the audience in its textured and artful sonic brew that literally is as much about the sound created by the nine musicians as the stellar songs they perform.

I had wondered after catching Bon Iver in a potent performance outdoors at Coachella in Indio earlier this year, if the group's sound and style gained that otherworldly element because of the epic desert setting. Although  expansive site may have played a part in the ethereal vibe, Bon Iver exhibits all those magical moods and sounds on the ACL episode too. Don't miss it...

Austin, TX—October 11, 2012—Austin City Limits (ACL) Season 38 hits its stride with a breathtaking performance by 2012 Grammy Award-winning Best New Artist Bon Iver in a standout ACL debut. The new episode airs on Saturday, October 13 (check local listings for times). Joined by an eight-piece band for the occasion, frontman Justin Vernon turns his intimate confessionals into orchestral pop anthems in his first turn at ACL. Vernon performs songs from Bon Iver, Bon Iver, the 2012 Grammy Award-winner for Best Alternative Album, and also includes gems from his 2007 breakthrough For Emma, Forever Ago. “This is a trip,” a heartfelt Vernon says from the ACL stage at The Moody Theater in downtown Austin. “I used to be on the other end of the screen when I was 10.”


Bon Iver is the moniker of Wisconsin native Justin Vernon, a name derived from the French phrase for “good winter.” Written during a secluded winter stay in a remote cabin in Northwest Wisconsin, Vernon crafted a stunning collection of bold, ardent musings layered with pastoral melodies and his hauntingly smooth falsetto into Bon Iver's acclaimed debut For Emma, Forever Ago. In 2011, Bon Iver released the much-anticipated follow-up, Bon Iver, Bon Iver, earning two Grammy Awards in 2012 for Best New Artist and Best Alternative Album.
