Austin, TX—January 3, 2014—Austin City Limits (ACL) rings in the new year with new episodes, starting the second half of Season 39 with an electrifying hour from rock innovators Queens of the Stone Age. Queens' frontman Josh Homme appeared on ACL back in 2009 as part of the supergroup Them Crooked Vultures (alongside Dave Grohl and John Paul Jones), but in this appearance he makes his long-awaited ACL debut with Queens of the Stone Age, the band he's led for nearly two decades. QOTSA recently released their first album in six years...Like Clockwork, debuting at #1 on Billboard's 200 and earning unanimous raves on critic's Year-End Best Albums of 2013 lists including Spin, Rolling Stone, Alternative Press and NPR. QOTSA combines metal, blues, thrash, punk and psychedelia into a sound that is both classic and unique. The band's ACL performance includes songs from the new record and hits from throughout their storied career. The scorching eleven-song set opens with signature tracks from their 2002 breakthrough Songs for the Deaf delivered with rabid guitars and head-banging drums. Grammy Award-winning Bon Iver immerses 'Austin City Limits' with magic touch

Radiohead kicked things off on the new season of Austin City Limits with an intense, fast-paced concert of experimental rock that set a high bar for those acts who follow in the weeks ahead. On the next episode of the legendary music series set to air this weekend, Bon Iver delivers an equally enthralling series by immersing the audience in its textured and artful sonic brew that literally is as much about the sound created by the nine musicians as the stellar songs they perform.

I had wondered after catching Bon Iver in a potent performance outdoors at Coachella in Indio earlier this year, if the group's sound and style gained that otherworldly element because of the epic desert setting. Although  expansive site may have played a part in the ethereal vibe, Bon Iver exhibits all those magical moods and sounds on the ACL episode too. Don't miss it...

Austin, TX—October 11, 2012—Austin City Limits (ACL) Season 38 hits its stride with a breathtaking performance by 2012 Grammy Award-winning Best New Artist Bon Iver in a standout ACL debut. The new episode airs on Saturday, October 13 (check local listings for times). Joined by an eight-piece band for the occasion, frontman Justin Vernon turns his intimate confessionals into orchestral pop anthems in his first turn at ACL. Vernon performs songs from Bon Iver, Bon Iver, the 2012 Grammy Award-winner for Best Alternative Album, and also includes gems from his 2007 breakthrough For Emma, Forever Ago. “This is a trip,” a heartfelt Vernon says from the ACL stage at The Moody Theater in downtown Austin. “I used to be on the other end of the screen when I was 10.”


Bon Iver is the moniker of Wisconsin native Justin Vernon, a name derived from the French phrase for “good winter.” Written during a secluded winter stay in a remote cabin in Northwest Wisconsin, Vernon crafted a stunning collection of bold, ardent musings layered with pastoral melodies and his hauntingly smooth falsetto into Bon Iver's acclaimed debut For Emma, Forever Ago. In 2011, Bon Iver released the much-anticipated follow-up, Bon Iver, Bon Iver, earning two Grammy Awards in 2012 for Best New Artist and Best Alternative Album.

“In my opinion, Justin Vernon is a musical genius,” says ACL Executive Producer Terry Lickona. “The music he creates through Bon Iver transcends anything else out there in pop or rock. The orchestration may be dense and the lyric abstract - to say the least - but together the effect is riveting. Seeing it live really brings it to life in a way ACL does best.”

Radiohead shines on season premiere of 'Austin City Limits'

In a world of gizmos and gadgets, laptops and wi-fi, iPads and iPhones, and seemingly everything under the fluorescent sun isn't it great that television still matters.
That is abundantly clear on the season premiere of the ever-essential PBS television series Austin City Limits (ACL), which begins its 38th season on Oct. 6, 2012 with an hour-long performance featuring the groundbreaking British band Radiohead.

The episode marks the first time that Radiohead has ever appeared on ACL, and watching how amazing the band is via this early 2012 performance chronicled at The Moody Theater in downtown Austin, Texas is to see what happens when the strongest of modern rock heroes and best of compelling music television shows meet.

Although Radiohead is a relative youngster (the band released its debut single "Creep" in 1992) at 20 compared to ACL, whatever the delay in the two forces finally forging can be forgiven thanks to the magic displayed throughout the episode. Featuring material gleaned mostly from the band's recent discs (notably Hail to the Thief and The King of Limbs) and new material unveiled on this tour, Radiohead blazes through its genre-decimating blend of experimental rock and electronica in a setting that actually captures what the fuss is all about when discussing the acclaimed group.

Not only do Thom Yorke (lead vocals, guitar), Jonny Greenwood (lead guitar, keyboards, other stuff), Colin Greenwood (bass), Phil Selway (drums, percussion) and Ed O'Brien (guitar, percussion, backing vocals) look like they're having a blast, the live audience seems fully tuned in. In addition, the fantastic camera work and selection of shots collectively break down that wall between Radiohead and television viewers.

Among the highlights on the Radiohead ACL episode are the affecting "The Daily Mail," with Yorke beginning the song while seated at his upright piano before the rest of the band comes in as the song builds and builds. Later on during "The Amazing Sounds of Orgy," Yorke plays bass using it with a percussion-styled approach that layers well against Colin Greenwood's use of his own bass instrument.

And proving that no other band can rock quite like Radiohead is easy thanks to the jaw-dropping versions of "Morning Mr. Magpie" and even more forceful "There There" unleashed by the band.

'Paul McCartney's Live Kisses' is a magical ride

One of the genuine musical surprises of early 2012 was the release of Paul McCartney's Kisses On The Bottom album. Released back in February, the album is a wonderful collection of standards that Sir Paul listened to as a young boy, as well as several originals (notably, the evocative "My Valentine," my favorite song on the disc).
The album was a definite artistic challenge for McCartney with him focusing strictly on singing and leaving the instrumental duties to Diana Krall and her top-notch band, as well as guest appearances from Stevie Wonder and Eric Clapton.

In celebration of the release of Kisses On The Bottom, McCartney and many of the players who helped him complete that album gathered in the same Capitol Studios space in Los Angeles on Feb. 9, 2012 (the 48th anniversary of The Beatles' U.S. TV debut on The Ed Sullivan Show) to revisit their roles in the first-ever live performance of the songs.

The glorious results can now be seen by all when Paul McCartney's Live Kisses comes to Great Performances, set to air at 9 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 7, 2012 on PBS stations (check local listings here).
Over the course of the fast-paced 53-minute special, McCartney joins forces with Krall at the piano, guitar great John Pizzarelli and others - all of it captured by Grammy-winning producer Tommy LiPuma and Al Schmitt in the studio booth.

Those wondering why McCartney veered off recent path of rock-styled releases (2007's Memory Almost Full, 2005's Chaos and Creation In The Backyard) or experimental rock he has pursued with Youth as The Fireman, will see the life-long love affair McCartney has had with traditional pop music through interviews, old family photos, vintage video clips on The Beatles back in the early '60s and through the 10 performances themselves.

From the opening performance of Fats Waller's "I'm Gonna Sit Right Down And Write Myself A Letter" to more affecting material ("More I Cannot Wish You," with McCartney's emotive vocals on full display), other standouts on the special include the affecting "My Valentine" (featuring Joe Walsh's fantastic acoustic guitar work), the poignant "Bye Bye Blackbird" and bouncy "My Very Good Friend the Milkman." On several songs, his longtime live drummer Abe Laboriel Jr. contributes winning harmony vocals.

Jumping back and forth between black & white and color, the flow and look of the film is seamless, and director Jonas Akerlund gets all the details just right. At one point, McCartney recalls "John (Lennon) and I both loved this old stuff."

Thanks to Paul McCartney's Live Kisses, the rest of us get to share a little bit of that love too.

Sights & Sounds: TV, DVD and online specials satisfy rock fans

Eric Clapton joins forces with fellow “guitar gods” (including Jeff Beck, seen in the image here) for a third Crossroads Guitar Festival

If you caught Eric Clapton and a bunch of great artists at the third Crossroads Guitar Festival on PBS over the weekend (some stations around the nation air the special on Monday, June 6, including WNET/THIRTEEN in New York), then you know how great it was.
I was sent an advance copy of the concert and was impressed by the range of artists and material featured on the television special.

And while Clapton's name immediately brings the distinctive blend of British blues-rock to mind, the festival captured a diverse blend of talents together. Host Bill Murray welcomed Louisiana-based slide guitar virtuoso Sonny Landreth, acoustic blues songsmith Keb' Mo', Texas trio ZZ Top, guitar slinger Joe Bonamassa and more than a dozen other names to the stage.

Some of the most memorable performances come via Clapton, who joined with Landreth on "Promise Land," and with Steve Winwood on "Dear Mr. Fantasy."

A MusiCares Tribute To Neil Young released on DVD

Another new DVD has found itself into my permanent library. Shout! Factory's A MusiCares Tribute to Neil Young finds some of rock and country music's biggest names celebrating one of the best artists of our time.



Things kick off with a bang, as John Fogerty and Keith Urban join with Booker T. Jones for a rollicking version of "Rockin' in the Free World." What is most interesting about the tribute is how so few of the artists refuse to offer up faithful versions of Young's material as it was originally recorded; rather in an extra tribute to the always genre-defying and independent-leaning Young, these artists please the composer (seen sitting with his wife and children, obviously enjoying the show) with their reworked versions of the material.

Jason Mraz/Shawn Colvin team for a jazz-tinged "Lotta Love," John Mellencamp/T Bone Burnett team up for a sparse (and grunge-free) "Down by the River" and Dave Matthews uses the upper reaches of his baritone to warn of the dangers of drugs in "The Needle and the Damage Done." Although Josh Groban's "Harvest Moon" simply does not work (perhaps a version of "Maid" where the tenor was accompanied by a string section would have worked), most of the performances prove the point that a strong song can work beyond the talents of its gifted creator.

The Black Crowes rock 'Artists Den' on Sunday

Fans of the Black Crowes won’t want to miss the next episode of “Live from the Artists Den” that airs on Los Angeles’ KLCS-TV at 10 p.m. on Sunday night, Aug. 8.

Having been genuinely impressed by the band’s outstanding performance at the Doheny Blues Festival in Dana Point back in May, I wondered if the Southern rockers’ power would translate to an hour-long television special. The answer is “yes.”

The episode was taped at the historic Lyric Theatre in the little town of Oxford, Mississippi in September 2009 and features the Black Crowes performing 10 songs; there are also several interview segments with singer Chris Robinson.

With the Black Crowes set to go on indefinite hiatus later this year after wrapping up their “Say Goodnight to the Bad Guys” tour, the band’s newly-issued double-disc Croweology (released Aug. 3 on Silver Arrow/Megaforce Records) is getting loads of attention. But the Crowes’ blend of blues, jam rock and psychedelic funk reaches its zenith in concert and this public television special does the troupe justice.
Indeed, as Robinson notes in one of the early interviews: “Without the audience it means nothing.”

Those simply looking for a greatest-hits trip with the Crowes will be disappointed, but discerning music lovers who admire the band’s deep catalog will appreciate the range of material offered up over the course of 60 minutes. The band plays Delta-styled blues (“Good Morning Captain,” “Let Me Share the Ride”), Southern blues-rock (a vocal harmonies-anchored “Shine Along”), tender folk-blues (“Appaloosa”), the Rolling Stones-styled ballad “She Talks to Angels” and genre-busting material (“I Ain’t Hiding” mixes up blues, psychedelic and funk effortlessly).

Things close out with the band roaring through the retro rock ‘n’ roll of “Thick n’ Thin.” There are few modern-day bands that jam with the kind of raucous and rollicking abandon of the Crowes without losing control and falling off the rails.

'Live from the Artists Den' features rocking Ringo Starr & Ben Harper

The upcoming episode of 'Live from the Artists Den' on PBS-TV features a performance by Ringo Starr with Ben Harper and Relentless7, as well as special guest Joan Osborne.

With Ringo Starr having just celebrated his 70th birthday on July 7, what better way to celebrate the legendary drummer-singer-songwriter than by tuning into watch him headline on the season premiere of “Live from the Artists Den” on public television this weekend.
Los Angeles’ KLCS-TV will air the episode, which kicks off the second season of “Live from the Artists Den.” In addition to Starr performing with Ben Harper and his band Relentless7, Joan Osborne provides additional backing vocals. If you live in Southern California, you can catch that episode at 10 p.m. on Sunday night, July 11.

I recently was able to view the show, taped at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in January 2010, and the concert finds the former Beatle in a decidedly-introspective mood. The loose and rollicking concert selections are the main draw, but the interviews with Starr (and those where he and Harper discuss their concert collaboration together) are equally illuminating.

“We’re still being fulfilled as musicians,” Starr says. “The beat goes on.”

The set starts with the troupe performing Starr’s hit “Photograph.” But with Harper and Relentless7, the band’s blues-folk-funk brew gives that song and those that follow a bit of an energetic twist to the set. In particular, Ann-Marie Calhoun’s fiddle provides sonic prose and layers around Starr’s distinctive vocals. And Harper’s fiery guitar playing does the same, notably when Starr celebrates the early days of the Fab Four with a raucous “I Wanna Be Your Man.”
Harper also gets to showcase his own material on the music special, particularly with the one-two punch of the beautiful “Faithfully Remain” and art house rocker “Up To You Now.”
