On April 20, 2024, Record Store Day, Alligator Records will release the deluxe 20th Anniversary 2-LP vinyl reissue of soul and gospel legend Mavis Staples' landmark 2004 release, Have A Little Faith. The album, when first released, sparked Mavis' solo career and launched her into the musical mainstream. Have A Little Faith is an exhilarating collection of timeless, uplifting songs deeply seated in Mavis’ faith and spirituality. It has now been remastered and will come in a deluxe gatefold jacket with expanded artwork. The set also features a spirited remembrance of how the record came to be by Mavis herself. The two 12-inch records, pressed on silver vinyl, will spin at 45 rpm, and will deliver the best possible sound. From her early days sharing lead vocals with her groundbreaking family gospel group, The Staple Singers, to her storied solo recordings, Mavis Staples is an inspirational force in modern popular culture and music. So it was surprising, upon the passing of Mavis' father -- family patriarch and Staple Singers leader Pops Staples -- in 2000, that Mavis' future was uncertain. She self-financed and recorded her own solo album, and after being turned down by major labels unable to see the commercial appeal of this legend’s fresh, genre-busting approach to spiritual music, it was embraced by Alligator Records. The label's unbridled enthusiasm in working the album to press, radio and the public helped Mavis fulfill her dream and ignite her solo career. No surprise that Foster delivers another batch of winning songs that soar, her vocals a constant wonder across the dozen-track disc that simultaneously showcases her immense skills as a top-tier songwriter. The gospel mining "Feels Like Freedom" brings chills with its power and beauty all while avoiding the modern day bombast that would diminish the might of the track. The potent and anthemic "Soul Searching" is an explosive celebration of love. Blues lovers will appreciate the longing "What Kind Of Fool," where the Austin songstress uses her full vocal range across the song's wonderful arc. The wistful "Lie Your Way To The Truth" dips into pop, but the soundscape shares more in common with the artful sonics of Florence + the Machine than the disposable and robotic approach of so many contemporary R&B hitmakers. Tell me more: On his first new album since 2020's Letter To You, Bruce Springsteen revisits a number of Gamble and Huff, Motown and Stax classics on the rousing 15-track Only The Strong Survive. Rather than recreate faithful takes on the material (such as the approach KISS lead singer Paul Stanley took on Paul Stanley's Soul Station's impressive debut album in 2021), Springsteen fuses his own signature sound with the well-known musical stylings identified with the original versions. Among the memorable tracks is an emotive take on the Commodores' 1985 track "Nightshift," the joyous Frank Wilson 1965 hit "Do I Love You (Indeed I Do)," nuanced reading of the Walker Brothers 1966 hit "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore," a tender version of the Four Tops' "When She Was My Girl" and the sorrowful "I Wish It Would Rain," the latter a song recorded by the Temptations in 1967. Springsteen is joined by 87-year-old soul music great Sam Moore on the inspired "Soul Days" and lovely "I Forgot To Be Your Lover." Across the album the receives backing from The E Street Horns, full string arrangements by Rob Mathes, as well as backing vocals from Lisa Lowell, Doozie Tyrell, Curtis King Jr., Michelle Moore, Dennis Collins and Fonzi Thornton. Tell me more: Set for release on Dec. 2, The Legendary Typewriter Tape: 6/25/64 Jorma's House is an important and historical release featuring singer Janis Joplin and guitarist Jorma Kaukonen (Jefferson Airplane, Hot Tuna) — along with Jorma's wife Margareta Kaukonen typing away intermittently in the background — recorded on a reel-to-reel machine at the beginning of their respective careers. Although the recording has previously been available via inferior bootlegs, the official version released by Omnivore Recordings today (Dec. 2, 2022) features restoration and mastering from Grammy-winner Michael Graves and sounds wonderful. There are a mix of originals and reworked blues standards. Joplin's own "Kansas City Blues," the evocative "Hesitation Blues," a moving take on Jimmie Cox's "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out," and the fiery Joplin-penned "Daddy, Daddy Daddy" are among the winning performances captured back in the summer of 1964. Going into the weekend, I wanted to provide an update on Now and Then, the forthcoming debut release from Paul Stanley's Soul Station.

As Stanley and his collective get set to release their highly-anticipated new album Now and Then on March 19, 2021, it got me recalling how truly strong the ensemble was when I saw them appear at the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano five years ago. And yes, for those who don't know, Soul Station's Stanley is also the frontman ("the Starchild") for legendary Rock and Roll Hall of Fame outfit KISS.

When I reviewed Stanley and company in February 2016, I was absolutely floored and had no idea that Stanley could sing soul music with such power and authenticity. Read my Orange County Register review of that memorable concert re-posted on Rock 'n' Roll Truth HERE.

New Music: Carla Olson, Tower of Power, Raul Midon

Discerning listeners with an ear for a variety of styles are in luck. A new duets project from singer-songwriter/producer Carla Olson, amazing return from soul masters Tower of Power and genre-stretching effort from jazz great Raul Midón are worth adding to your music library.

Tell me more: Lovers of stellar duets will want to hear Carla Olson's wonderful Have Harmony Will Travel 2 (released March 20 via Sunset Blvd. Records). The album features the talented Austin, Texas spawned singer-guitarist and former leader of Los Angeles' Textones teaming up with 11 notable guests to share lead vocals on a follow-up to her 2013 disc "Have Harmony, Will Travel." The track listing is uniformly strong with a celebrated and eclectic lineup of great singers artfully joining their voices with Olson's own. The decidedly rootsy "Timber, I'm Falling In Love" (with Stephen McCarthy on vocals and guitar), the Byrds-flavored "Goodbye My Love" (featuring Herman's Hermits lead singer Peter Noone) and "After the Storm" (with actress-singer Mare Winningham), and Americana nugget "Bossier City" (featuring I See Hawks In L.A.) are among my favorites on the album. The album's final track, the folk tale "Del Gato," has legendary Gene Clark and Olson joining voices in a nuanced performance. Tell me more: After more than 50 years, Tower of Power remains a musical treasure. Just listen to the Oakland-spawned outfit's Step Up (released on March 20), an intoxicating 14-track journey through the collective's blend of R&B and funk anchored by one of the world's great and enduring horn sections. Led by founder and tenor saxophonist Emilio Castillo, Tower of Power's timeless sound is celebrated with power and zeal. "The Story of You and I" is a wonderful musical explosion featuring a driving rhythm section amidst horns, fiery lead guitar and soulful lead vocals. The soulful ballad "Who Would Have Thought," shimmering "Addicted To You," and dance-minded funk romp "Look In My Eyes" are early highlights on the disc, while the jazzy "Sleeping With You Baby" and joyful soul of "Beyond My Wildest Dreams" are among the great tracks on the latter half of Step Up. Tell me more: Raul Midón is back with his new album The Mirror, an outstanding jazz effort which comes on the heels of the singer-guitarist's Grammy Award nominations for his previous two LPs (2017's Bad Ass & Blind and 2018's If You Really Want). This time out there is again plenty to celebrate as the talented artist (who has been blind since birth) showcases that he has an otherworldly ability to interpret the world around him and translate that into luxurious and probing songs that resonate with a master's touch. The diversity of the material is impressive. The album kicks off with the acoustic guitar-driven "I Love the Afternoon," Midón's soulful vocals balanced by some select harmonies that augment his voice; the track is further bolstered by a strong solo on his guitar. The lovely romantic-themed "A Certain Café" finds the New Mexico native joined by vibraphonist Joe Locke. On the breezy title track, he blends his signature jazz style with some flashy blues-meets-jazz guitar licks for a stylish approach. The gorgeous "Cold Cuts and Coffee" and "Deep Dry Ocean" are other standouts. He even enthralls with two solo spoken-word works ("If I Could See" and "One Day Without War"). New music: Vance Gilbert, KARNEY, Glenn Jones shine on latest releases

Three new under-the-radar releases deserving of widespread attention are featured in my column this week.

Artist: Vance Gilbert
Title: Good, Good Man (Disismye Music)
You might like if you enjoy: Boz Scaggs, Daryl Hall, Steve Goodman, Keb' Mo'
Tell me more: Vance Gilbert's wonderful genre-defying album Good, Good Man makes one thing clear: it's all about the song. The selections here are melodic, memorable and delivered with a master's touch. Gilbert's 13th album, Good, Good Man is bolstered by his signature lead vocals, nuanced arrangements and an artful cohesiveness that brings the various styles and moods together artfully across the dozen tracks. The R&B foray "Trust," literate piano ballad "Cousin Shelly's Station Wagon," joyful "Another Great Day Above Ground," and zeal of the retro swing "Zombie Pattycake" are early standouts. The disc closes out just as powerfully via the soulful "When I Cross Over," acoustic rendition of Skylark's 1973 soft rock hit "Wildflower" and the smart spoken word celebration of Halloween "The Day Before November." Tell me more: Fans of top-flight classic rock looking for something new should catch a listen of of KARNEY's wonderful new EP Better. Headed by lead singer-songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Anna Karney, the Bay Area, California-based band mines '70s classic rock along with contemporary modern rock with the skill and firepower of modern day favorites Greta Van Fleet. Listening to KARNEY's compelling reworking of the Led Zeppelin classic "Ramble On" is the perfect entry to discover the joys offered up on "Better," but listen and groove along and you'll discover the anthemic nugget "Trust," the enthralling "Trust," the prog-tinged "Round and Round" and other must-hear material. The soundscape is rich, adorned with layers of guitar, mandolin, fiddle, lap steel and sumptuous vocal harmonies. The North Carolina-based artist's lyrics probe life's road with equal skill and his sonorous baritone delivers the original songs with assurance and authenticity. All kinds of exciting music news to share today...

Pet Shop Boys and New Order have confirmed a co-headlining tour of North America. The two British electronic bands have announced that The Unity Tour kicks off September 5, 2020 in Toronto, Canada and sees stops in select cities including Madison Square Garden in New York, the legendary Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles and more. 

I've caught both New Order and Pet Shop Boys at Coachella (in 2005 and 2014, respectively), and both groups are very fun. This tour should be a blast!

Both bands will play a full set with the headliner alternating each night. Full list of dates below.

About New Order:

Rising from the ashes of Joy Division, the enigmatic New Order triumphed over tragedy to emerge as one of the most influential and acclaimed bands of all time. While their debut album Movement (1981) was shadowed by the legacy of Joy Division, going forward the band combined their original post-punk sound with influences from New York’s club scene. These shows were such a success, they were taken to Turin and Vienna in May 2018 to further great acclaim and the live album released as ∑(No,12k,Lg,17Mif) New Order + Liam Gillick: So It Goes.. (2019). A continuation of 2019’s Supernatural Now tour for Santana, the Miraculous Supernatural 2020 Tour will mark the first time that these two powerhouses will share the stage in the U.S. The Live Nation-produced outing kicks off June 19^th in San Diego and will make stops in Los Angeles, Dallas, New York, Chicago, Toronto, and more before wrapping August 29^th in Tampa.

This past year, Santana celebrated the 20^th anniversary of his revolutionary, multiple Grammy Award-wining album Supernatural, along with the 50^th anniversary of his Woodstock performance.   Santana’s 1999 album Supernatural featured the back-to-back No. 1 singles “Smooth” and “Maria Maria” and sold over 30 million copies worldwide, topping the charts in over a dozen countries and sweeping the 2000 Grammy Awards.

Earth, Wind & Fire was the first African American R&B group to receive the prestigious Kennedy Center Honor in 2019. Philip Bailey, Verdine White and Ralph Johnson continue the legacy of the band with career achievements that include nine Grammys, one being a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016.
