Nashville, TN  - Celebrated, award-winning duo Shovels & Rope have announced the surprise February 5th release of Busted Jukebox, Volume 3, (nicknamed Busted Juicebox) the latest installment of their Busted Jukebox collaborative series. Busted Jukebox Vol. 1 (2015) and Vol. 2 (2017) featured the acclaimed duo (Cary Ann Hearst and Michael Trent) teaming up with an eclectic list of artists to record a series of cover songs with inspired new arrangements. On Busted Jukebox, Volume 3, Shovels & Rope invited artists who are also parents (hence the “Juicebox” and cover art) to record a selection of songs with children in mind. The album contains a diverse collection of not-so-obvious tracks that have significant meaning to their family. Hearst and Trent explain their choices and discuss each collaboration in this Track By Track. Shovels & Rope is joined by Sharon Van Etten, M. Ward, The War and Treaty, John Paul White, members of Deer Tick, The Secret Sisters, The Felice Brothers, T. Hardy Morris and more. The artists put their signature on songs ranging from classic lullabies to REM and from Janis Joplin to Annie. The album was produced by Michael Trent. See Full Track Listing Below. A rousing rendition of The Beach Boys’ “In My Room” featuring Sharon Van Etten was just released (LISTEN HERE). Trent used to listen to the original to help him fall asleep when he was a child. Once a parent, he and Hearst sang it for their daughter regularly when she got her own room. Apparently,  they were not the only parents looking to the Brian Wilson classic for an assist. “My heart swelled when Cary Ann & Michael reached out to me to sing “In My Room” for their Busted Jukebox series,” says Van Etten. “As a mom, there are ‘go-to’ songs that help calm my son down and there are nights where I just sing the same song over and over. This is a song that is so personal to me, as we have listened to a lot of The Beach Boys music with our child and to share a sentiment of calm and exhaustion, sleep and frustration - this cover embodies it all.  Means so much to have been asked by musician parents that are trying to figure it out in all this chaos as well.  All we can do is keep doing what we love, sharing optimism and hope and supporting one another during these trying times.”

Tell me more: The arrival of the coronavirus pandemic early this year has left a destructive legacy in its wake to be sure. On the flip side, a number of music making greats not able to tour have been recording and issuing some of their most interesting and ambitious discs in memory. As likely the final great release of 2020, Sir Paul McCartney's decidedly lo-fi 18th solo album McCartney III (released Dec. 18) is the must-hear follow-up to 1970's McCartney, 1980's McCartney II and his 2005 disc Chaos and Creation in the Backyard. The material is diverse and there are definite treasures to be found for the faithful. The mostly-instrumental "Long Tailed Winter Bird," genre-bending "Find My Way," baroque folk flavored "Pretty Boys" and wistful piano-anchored "Women And Wives" are early enticing entries on "McCartney III." The buoyant rocker "Lavatory Lil" and gentle "The Kiss Of Venus" recall McCartney's early solo work; "Deep Deep Feeling" is haunting and bolstered by some emotive lead guitar work. Late disc standouts include the sparse and tempting "Deep Down," and breezy unassuming acoustic closer "Winter Bird / When Winter Comes" (a "lost classic" collaboration between McCartney and the late George Martin). Although McCartney's youthful tenor is mostly in absentia, the 78-years-old artist's brilliant songwriting and musicianship — he plays nearly all instruments on the album — are on full display. Tell me more: Singer-songwriter-guitarist master Chris Smither's More From The Levee is an album whose authentic Louisiana-draped soundscape is enhanced by the artist's descriptive and poetic lyrics. Tell me more: Singer-songwriter M. Ward has released a moving full-length tribute to legendary jazz and swing singer Billie Holiday titled Think of Spring where he offers up 11 tunes popularized by the late artist who passed away in 1959 at the age of 44. The songs are delivered via sparse and impactful arrangements with Ward's distinctive baritone and deft acoustic guitar play doing all the lifting; indeed Ward used various alternate tunings and minimal studio wizardry to complete the recordings (most tracked on an analog Tascam four-track machine). The yearning "I Get Along Without You Very Well," uplifting "For Heaven's Sake," shimmering "It's Easy To Remember," tender "For All We Know" and lovely "All The Way" (the latter popularized by Holliday as well as Frank Sinatra) are among the gems on the collection. Tell me more: James Blake delighted fans with the release of his new Covers EP on Dec. 11. The six-track collection features the United Kingdom-based singer-songwriter/multi-instrumentalist delivering some of his favorite covers. Blake's evocative take on Billie Eilish's "when the party's over" is every bit as powerful as the original while his otherworldly take on the Joy Division favorite "Atmosphere" is a fully new interpretation of the 1980 classic. Blake's bewitching falsetto and potent piano playing bring a haunting touch to a cover of Stevie Wonder's "Never Dreamed You'd Leave in Summer." Tell me more: Tears For Fears' brilliant third album The Seeds Of Love was released more than 30 years ago but sounds better and more relevant than ever. A recent reissue of the classic is available in several different configurations ranging from a two-disc audio CD set to a Super Deluxe Edition box set that consists of four CDs and one Blu-Ray which collectively tells the story of how this four-years-in-the-making album from Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith came to be. The recently-issued expanded Super Deluxe Edition reissue of the 1989 masterwork is truly a joy. Indeed, the box set includes 22 previously-unissued tracks from demo sessions, live jams and studio sessions. The material here spans the sonic landscape; the jazz-meets-rock "Bad Man's Song," soul-styled "Advice for the Young at Heart," genre-blending "Standing on the Corner of the Third World," gorgeous "Famous Last Words" and mind-blowing Beatlesque title track sound better than ever. Tell me more: Back in 1970, rising artist Cat Stevens released not one, but two impressive albums. Fast forward 50 years to 2020 and both of those now-legendary LPs — Mona Bone Jakon and Tea For The Tillerman (released just months apart in 1970) — have been released at expanded 50th anniversary editions. While this year has certainly been a complete downer in terms of live music (let's face it, live-streaming can't replace the concert going experience), the parade of noteworthy expanded and special reissues has been spectacular as personified by these terrific and in-depth dives into the artistry of Cat Stevens (who changed his name to Yusuf following his conversion to Islam in December 1977); they are truly must-haves for fans of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame singer-songwriter. 

Mona Bone Jakon: 50th Anniversary Super Deluxe Edition

The 2020 remasters of the original albums are incredible; there are also wonderful new 2020 mixes of each album as well. Listening to even well-known tracks such as "Wild World," "Father and Son" and "Where Do The Children Play" (from Tea for the Tillerman), and "Lady Darbanville," "Maybe Your Right" and "I Think I See The Light" (on Mona Bone Jakon) is to seemingly rediscover the beloved songs for the first time. Mona Bone Jakon includes 24 previously unreleased songs, and Tea for the Tillerman features 21 unreleased tracks alongside a number of other rarities. It’s an electrifying time for Mavis Staples. Her much anticipated new album Livin' On A High Note has just been released to critical raves, she picked up her second Grammy Award earlier this week and a feature-length documentary on her life is poised to premiere on HBO on February 29.

The New York Times recently called Staples’ late-career creative output an “extraordinary productive streak” that reaffirms her  “lifelong messages — faith, family, freedom, honesty, perseverance — as she both reaches back to the sound of the Staple Singers and tries some new twists.” Rolling Stone writes, “Staples says she's entering a new chapter. Hollywood, California - January 29, 2015- He is one of popular music's most deeply revered figures, a legendary writer, producer, arranger and performer of some of the most cherished music in pop music history. Indeed, it is no exaggeration to call Brian Wilson one of the most gifted and influential composers of the past 50 years. For the release of his 11th solo studio album, titled No Pier Pressure, Wilson has returned to Capitol Records, his original label home with The Beach Boys.  The album will be released April 7 in standard 13-track and deluxe 16-track editions, each available on CD and digitally, as well as a 16-track 2LP edition on 180-gram vinyl. For the No Pier Pressure sessions, Brian Wilson reunited with longtime collaborator Joe Thomas, with whom he co-produced The Beach Boys' No. 3 Billboard album That's Why God Made The Radio for the iconic band's 50th anniversary reunion in 2012.  In addition, Wilson was  joined at Hollywood's Ocean Way Studios by talented musicians he personally invited to record with him, including his former Beach Boys bandmates Al Jardine, David Marks and Blondie Chaplin, as well as Kacey Musgraves, fun.'s Nate Ruess, She & Him's Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward, Peter Hollens, Capital Cities' Sebu Simonian, and trumpet master Mark Isham.  Wilson has also brought in session all-stars Don Was, drummer Jim Keltner, Dean Parks, and Kenny Aronoff.  Members of Wilson's longtime touring band, including Scott Bennett, Paul Mertens, Darian Sahanaja, and Probyn Gregory also participated in the sessions, along with Matt Jardine, son of Al Jardine, and former bandmate Jeffrey Foskett.  Wilson and Thomas began collaborating on the new songs during The Beach Boys' whirlwind 50th anniversary activities throughout 2012, a banner year for the band which also included a GRAMMY® Award win for Brian for The Beach Boys' long-awaited SMiLE Sessions release.  He told family, friends, and journalists around the world that he looked forward to returning to the studio when he got back home to California.   Always most inspired when creativity is given time and space to freely flow, Wilson initially envisioned the sessions for his new album with The Beach Boys in mind, but that was not to be.  Wanting to find the right voices to complete his vision, Wilson saw an opportunity to finally become hip with his kids and recruited some amazing young vocalists who have been inspired by his music to do the job.  Throughout his iconic career, Wilson has brought ingenious vision to his own compositions, as well as to those for which he has collaborated, weaving a lush, vibrant tapestry of intricately nuanced vocal harmonies and instrumental arrangements for himself, his bandmates and others.  For more than 50 years, fans have marveled at the sheer beauty of the music that springs forth from Wilson's imagination into glorious song. Camped out at Ocean Way, Wilson took a fluid, woodshedding approach to the recording process, deftly tailoring the vocal and instrumental parts and arrangements to each participant.  Wilson worked to hone the arrangements, often assembling pieces from various takes, a signature style of recording he has enjoyed since his earliest sessions with The Beach Boys.  In fact, several of the songs were written during the recording process. Brian Wilson began his career as a teenaged founding member of The Beach Boys, who signed with Capitol Records in July 1962 and released their first album, Surfin' Safari, that same year. The band's initial surf-rock focus was soon broadened to include other themes, and 1966's Pet Sounds is universally hailed as one of the greatest albums of all time.  Wilson's innovative vocal and instrumental arrangements for major hits including "I Get Around," "California Girls," "Wouldn't It Be Nice," "God Only Knows," and the No. 1 smash "Good Vibrations" made The Beach Boys America's preeminent band of the 1960s. Brian Wilson has also achieved great solo success with 10of his own albums released to date, including his acclaimed 2004 completion of an album he first began recording in the '60s, Brian Wilson Presents...
