Los Angeles, CA (August 24, 2022)—In celebration of its 10^th anniversary, Craft Recordings is set to release the first-ever vinyl pressing of Holidays Rule, a deliciously diverse collection of seasonal music featuring glittering contributions from across the musical spectrum. Due out September 30^th and available to pre-orderbeginning today (8/24) as a 2-LP set pressed on translucent red vinyl and housed in a gatefold jacket (seen above). In addition, a limited clear-with-red-and-green splatter variant is available exclusively at the Craft Recordings store. Lacquers were cut by Dave Cooley at Elysian Mastering from the original hi-resolution sources, mastered by Gavin Lurssen at Lurssen Mastering.

 

Originally released in 2012, the set boasts 17 recordings of timeless holiday classics from artists including pop phenoms fun., the legendary Paul McCartney, indie-pop luminaries The Shins, Americana favorites The Civil Wars, adored singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright (featuring Sharon Van Etten), playful popstars Fruit Bats, bluegrass revisionists Punch Brothers, soul icon Irma Thomas (with The Preservation Hall Jazz Band), cinematic rockers Calexico, eclectic troubadour Andrew Bird, Latin neo-traditionalists Y La Bamba, Texas twang-rock troupe Heartless Bastards, alt-folk standard-bearer Holly Golightly, roots quintet Black Prairie (featuring Sallie Ford), choral revival collective AgesandAges, Fiery Furnaces alumna Eleanor Friedberger, and Seattle Americana outfit The Head and the Heart.

 

Holidays Rule delves into a rich assemblage of Americana, alt-pop, folk, electronica, country, American standards, singer-songwriter, New Orleans gospel, garage rock, and more to create a melting pot of sounds that still feel like a cohesive album, rather than a holiday hodgepodge.

 

Some of the numerous highlights include fun. whipping up a distinctly postmodern take on the rollicking “Sleigh Ride,” adding a frosty techno swirl to the winter perennial. Paul McCartney’s velvety rendition effortlessly conjures the warmth of the fireside with “The Christmas Song.” The Shins, meanwhile, take McCartney’s own “Wonderful Christmastime” in a cheekily retro direction, turning the track into a musical homage to the Beach Boys. Wainwright and Van Etten deliver a fittingly seductive “Baby, It’s Cold Outside.”

 

The Preservation Hall Jazz Band collaborates with the legendary Irma Thomas on a soulful and horn-heavy rendition of “May Ev’ry Day Be Christmas,” while the GRAMMY®-winning duo The Civil Wars work their intimate magic on “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day,” with only acoustic guitar and their spellbinding vocal blend. Calexico’s “Green Grows the Holly” works similarly spooky-rural terrain (with their trademark border-town brass for expressive contrast). Punch Brothers’ mandolin-spiced rendition of the hymn “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel” is the most overtly religious track but offers its own set of unexpected twists and turns. On the album’s final track, Andrew Bird harkens back to his Bowl of Fire days with the violin charge of “Auld Lang Syne.”

Nashville, TN  - Celebrated, award-winning duo Shovels & Rope have announced the surprise February 5th release of Busted Jukebox, Volume 3, (nicknamed Busted Juicebox) the latest installment of their Busted Jukebox collaborative series. Busted Jukebox Vol. 1 (2015) and Vol. 2 (2017) featured the acclaimed duo (Cary Ann Hearst and Michael Trent) teaming up with an eclectic list of artists to record a series of cover songs with inspired new arrangements. On Busted Jukebox, Volume 3, Shovels & Rope invited artists who are also parents (hence the “Juicebox” and cover art) to record a selection of songs with children in mind. The album contains a diverse collection of not-so-obvious tracks that have significant meaning to their family. Hearst and Trent explain their choices and discuss each collaboration in this Track By Track. Shovels & Rope is joined by Sharon Van Etten, M. Ward, The War and Treaty, John Paul White, members of Deer Tick, The Secret Sisters, The Felice Brothers, T. Hardy Morris and more. A rousing rendition of The Beach Boys’ “In My Room” featuring Sharon Van Etten was just released (LISTEN HERE). Trent used to listen to the original to help him fall asleep when he was a child. Once a parent, he and Hearst sang it for their daughter regularly when she got her own room. Apparently,  they were not the only parents looking to the Brian Wilson classic for an assist. “My heart swelled when Cary Ann & Michael reached out to me to sing “In My Room” for their Busted Jukebox series,” says Van Etten. “As a mom, there are ‘go-to’ songs that help calm my son down and there are nights where I just sing the same song over and over. This is a song that is so personal to me, as we have listened to a lot of The Beach Boys music with our child and to share a sentiment of calm and exhaustion, sleep and frustration - this cover embodies it all.  Means so much to have been asked by musician parents that are trying to figure it out in all this chaos as well.  All we can do is keep doing what we love, sharing optimism and hope and supporting one another during these trying times.”

April 20, 2020: On Wednesday, April 22 at 7pm ET, as part of the New Jersey Pandemic Relief Fund’s JERSEY 4 JERSEY benefit show raising funds to fight the impact of COVID-19, the remaining members of Fountains of Wayne will reunite for their first live performance in 7 years to pay tribute to songwriter, bassist, and vocalist Adam Schlesinger who passed away earlier this month. The band’s Chris Collingwood, Jody Porter and Brian Young will be joined by acclaimed singer-songwriter and New Jerseyan Sharon Van Etten to fill in on bass and backing vocals.

“Brian, Jody and I are honored to be part of the Jersey 4 Jersey benefit, and grateful that Sharon was able to perform with us,” Collingwood says. “Adam would have been proud that Fountains were helping to raise money for fellow New Jerseyans.”  

“As a New Jersey native, it means so much to me to participate in the NJPRF charitable event that gives back to this community,” says Van Etten. “Adam was an incredible songwriter and I am truly humbled to join Fountains of Wayne in his honor."

“One of the great unheralded songwriters of our time” (VOX), Schlesinger was a founding member of the bands Fountains of Wayne, Ivy, and rock supergroup Tinted Windows, as well as a regular writer and producer for Brooklyn synth-pop duo Fever High. Despite modest record sales, Fountains of Wayne, which Schlesinger co-founded with singer, songwriter, and guitarist Chris Collingwood in 1995, was loved by critics and became a cult favorite with songs such as “Radiation Vibe,” “Utopia Parkway” and “Red Dragon Tattoo” before their 2003 hit “Stacy’s Mom” brought them into the mainstream.

From the beginning of his career, Schlesinger also found success writing songs for film, theater and television, most notably penning the theme song for the Tom Hanks directed film That Thing You Do!, and writing and producing songs for the TV comedy show Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. Over his uniquely distinguished career, Schlesinger won three Emmy Awards, a GRAMMY Award, the ASCAP Pop Music Award, and was nominated for Academy, Tony, and Golden Globe Awards. He had most recently been collaborating with Sarah Silverman for the stage adaptation of her memoir, “The Bedwetter,” which was scheduled to begin performances this month.

News of Schlesinger’s passing shook all corners of the entertainment world. “With a career unlike any other indie songwriters” (Rolling Stone), he was paid tribute to by Tom Hanks, Stephen Colbert, Rachel Bloom, Conan O’Brien, Jack Antonoff, and countless others who were impacted by the songwriter’s undeniable talent.

Collingwood and Van Etten, along with Fountains of Wayne drummer Brian Young and guitarist Jody Porter, will come together for The New Jersey Pandemic Relief Fund’s (NJPRF) JERSEY 4 JERSEY benefit, a one-night broadcast fundraiser to fight the medical, social and economic impact of COVID-19 on New Jersey’s most vulnerable communities. It will be broadcast at 7 PM ET on Wednesday, April 22, on Apple Music and AppleTV apps, worldwide. This special evening will feature New Jersey’s biggest champions and celebrities participating from their homes, including Saquon Barkley, Tony Bennett, Jon Bon Jovi, Danny DeVito, Whoopi Goldberg, Halsey, Chelsea Handler, Charlie Puth, Kelly Ripa, Chris Rock, Bruce Springsteen, Jon Stewart, SZA and more.
