Los Angeles – May 30, 2025 – The legendary Al Jardine, co-founding singer, songwriter and guitarist of The Beach Boys, has just released his first new collection of songs in 15 years with the eclectic new 4-song digital EP, Islands In The Sun. Available to stream and download everywhere today, the EP is chock full of Jardine’s sharp songwriting, iconic, summery voice and the type of good vibes and trademark harmonies that only a Beach Boy can provide. The album was recorded at Al’s home studio on the California coast and produced by Al alongside Stevie Heger (co-producer of Al’s debut studio album, A Postcard from California) and longtime Beach Boys/Brian Wilson sound engineer Jeff Peters. Stream Islands In The Sun: https://AlJardine.lnk.to/IslandInTheSunPR The EP debuts with a vintage postcard-themed lyric video for the titular track, “Islands In The Sun,” a friendly nod to “Kokomo.” Featuring beautiful lead vocals from Al and his son Matt Jardine, plus a guest vocal from Beach Boy Bruce Johnston and a children’s choir from three local elementary schools, the song is a Caribbean-flavored fantasy that falls somewhere between the Beach Boys and Belafonte that perfectly captures the mood and tropical lifestyle of the West Indies. “‘Islands In The Sun’ captures that special magic we felt and sang about on Beach Boys songs like ‘Island Girl’ and ‘Kokomo,’” says Al. “It was inspired by the enchanting calypso sounds of Harry Belafonte and Bob Marley’s laid-back reggae vibe. Now wouldn’t it be fun if we could bottle up the sun!”

The second track, “My Plane Leaves Tomorrow (Au Revoir),” is a heartfelt duet with Neil Young that Al first started working on during the recording sessions for his 2010 debut solo album, A Postcard from California, and has now been completed nearly a decade and a half later. Neil recorded his vocals at the same session that he recorded Postcard’s “A California Saga” with his old bandmates, David Crosby and Stephen Stills. In the poignant new song, Al and Neil share the same sentiment about sending our troops off to foreign wars. The track includes a portion of the melancholy military bugle call “Taps,” performed by Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, who laid down his contribution when he also provided bass for “Help Me Rhonda” for the Postcard album. “Highway 101 (Rosarita Beach Café),” a joyful romp to the border, is Al’s Mexico-inspired version of the Leiber/Stoller classic, “Smokey Joe’s Café.” The original, a classic by The Coasters from 1956, was one of Al’s favorite songs when he was growing up and almost 70 years later, Al got permission from Mike Stoller to rewrite the lyrics. This new interpretation features long-standing Beach Boys touring band members Ed Carter on bass and Mike Kowalski on drums, Michael Lent (Barry Manilow’s guitarist for over 25 years) on lead guitar and Steve Douglas from the legendary Wrecking Crew on sax. The EP concludes with “Crumple Car,” an updated version of the forgotten tune from the 1978 classic surf movie, “Big Wednesday.” Originally written by surfer Denny Aaberg with Phil Pritchard, the song was brought to Al’s attention years ago by Ed Carter (who was friends with Denny) and has been reimagined as a folky, fingerpicked ode to Al’s love of the ocean and his desire to keep the coastlines clean and safe from harmful manmade pollution. With Denny’s blessing, Al’s new version features Ed on lead guitar finger-picking style with backing vocals from Al’s son, Adam Jardine, plus Al on lead whistle.   Al will embark on a summer tour with seasoned members of Brian Wilson’s longtime touring band that he has reunited as The Pet Sounds Band. In addition to performing the classic Beach Boys’ hits, Al and The Pet Sounds Band will be performing radio singles and fan favorites from The Beach Boys’ critically acclaimed ‘70s albums like 15 Big Ones, The Beach Boys Love You and the M.I.U. Album, which was produced by Al in 1978, plus a song or two from Islands In The Sun, along with rarities and deep cuts. Al will be joined by his son, vocalist/percussionist Matt Jardine, who toured with him, Brian Wilson and The Beach Boys for decades, keyboardist Darian Sahanaja, drummer Michael D’Amico, bassist Bob Lizik, pianist Gary Griffin, guitarist Rob Bonfiglio, horn player Paul Von Mertens, and keyboardist Debbie Shair.   Islands In The Sun comes perfectly timed with summer just around the corner and at 82, Al sounds as good as ever.

Tell me more: Los Angeles-based Dirty Honey have arrived with their full-length, self-titled debut and the album fully delivers on the promise of the quartet's March 2019 EP (which spawned the single "When I'm Gone," the first unsigned band to ever earn a number 1 track on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Songs chart). The eight-track album recalls the style and sound of "Rocks"-era Aerosmith, but there is a modern edge that separates Dirty Honey from its musical ancestors. There is a myriad of catchy riff rock on the disc, all of it wrapped up with forceful songcraft and rock musicianship courtesy of the collective talents of singer Marc Labelle, guitarist John Notto, bassist Justin Smolian and drummer Corey Coverstone. Tell me more: Great lead and harmony vocals, stellar musicianship and excellent songs add up to a whole lot of magic on the eponymous release from New York City-based troupe Cole Quest and the City Pickers. Quest, the grandson of Woody Guthrie, leads the collective on a fast-paced journey sure to please fans of bluegrass music. A gorgeous take on the lovely Woody Guthrie/Billy Bragg song "Way Over Yonder in the Minor Key" features Quest's strong vocals amidst an artful backdrop of acoustic guitar, dancing harmonica, banjo, bass and Hammond B3 organ. Quest's original acoustic ballad "My Sweet Little Girl" showcases his own talents as a songwriter along with the nuanced musical skills of the ensemble. The quick "7-11/ Foggy Mountain Rock" allows the ensemble of players to really cut loose. The exhilarating "If I Still Had You" closes out the outstanding EP. The City Pickers' excellent lineup includes guitarist-vocalist Christian Apuzzo, harmonica great Matheus Verardino, banjo player Mike Mulhollan, bassist Larry Cook, keyboardist Sam Reider and drummer Sean Trischka. Tell me more: The release of the debut from West of Texas is truly a saga worthy of the expansive sound heard across the 16 super songs that make up Heartache, Hangovers & Honky Tonks. Singer-songwriter Jerry Zinn formed West of Texas back in 2003, with the group's 3-song EP titled The Heartache Single issued in 2010. Before a full-length LP could be completed, health issues hit Zinn and he was unable to sing. Fast forward to 2019 and Zinn was able to sing again ; the arrival of COVID-19 sadly put an end to planned live dates as part of a March-May 2020 tour. Zinn then used the uncertain time to return to the studio to finish the album he had started more than a decade earlier. And what an album it is! Produced by Rich McCulley, Heartache, Hangovers & Honky Tonks bristles with an authentic spirit recalling the groundbreaking likes of Buck Owens, Merle Haggard and Dwight Yoakam — it doesn't hurt that Zinn has a rich baritone that recalls the best country singers of the '60s and '70s. These lyrics are from the 1970 Beach Boys composition “Add Some Music to Your Day,” and they are the inspiration for a new Omnivore Recordings album, California Music Presents Add Some Music, due out April 23, 2021 on CD and Digital. Initiated by Beach Boys historian and documentarian David Beard, California Music Presents Add Some Music is an uplifting collection celebrating all that is good about one of California’s greatest exports … music! In 2020, Beard re-recorded the classic 1970 Beach Boys song “Add Some Music to Your Day” (written by Brian Wilson, Mike Love and Joe Knott) with Beach Boys members Mike Love, Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston and David Marks and the children of the Beach Boys, including Carnie and Wendy Wilson (Brian Wilson’s daughters), Christian, Hayleigh and Ambha Love (Mike Love’s children); Justyn Wilson (son of Carl Wilson); and Matt Jardine (son of founding Beach Boys member Al Jardine). Their brilliant new rendering of “Add Some Music to Your Day” was arranged and produced by Rob Bonfiglio (member of the Brian Wilson Band and husband to Carnie Wilson).

 

Filling out the ten tracks are recordings by Love, Jardine, Johnston, Marks longtime Beach Boys associate Jeffrey Foskett, Bonfiglio, and a previously unreleased recording of The Beach Boys’ classic ‘Friends” from the next generation. A portion of the proceeds of this release will be donated to http://www.feedingamerica.org.

Concert review: Brian Wilson and The Zombies bring classics to Fantasy Springs Resort

Less than a week after catching The Rolling Stones thrill a packed State Farm Stadium in Glendale, AZ, I was able to catch a decidedly more intimate bill celebrating '60s-spawned rock courtesy of a promising bill featuring Brian Wilson and The Zombies at the Fantasy Springs Resort in Indio on Sept. 1.

Fresh off the band's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame earlier this year, England's Zombies have continued to enjoy a well-deserved resurgence because of a number of fortuitous factors including burgeoning interest in the band's 1968 masterwork Odessey and Oracle and a slew of high-profile performances showcasing the fully-intact talents of singer Colin Blunstone and keyboardist-composer Rod Argent. In fact, prior to catching The Zombies in Indio on Sunday night, this writer last caught the band earn a standing ovation opening for Arcade Fire at the Greek Theater in Hollywood in September 2018.

The crowd at Fantasy Springs was rewarded with a special set that covered the band's stellar range of intoxicating material. Opening with the blues rock nugget "Roadrunner" (the Bo Diddley cover was the first song on the band's 1965 debut Begin Here), the Zombies covered plenty of sonic territory over 65 minutes. With a style that seamlessly blends rock, pop, jazz, classical and R&B, the Zombies (also featuring drummer Steve Rodford, guitarist Tom Toomey and bassist Søren Koch) showcased beloved classic material highlighted by a mini-set from Odessey and Oracle including an extended "Time of the Season." However, concertgoers seemed to really appreciate the group's newer tracks (including "Moving On" and "Edge of the Rainbow" off 2015's Still Got That Hunger); a definite highlight was when the Zombies debuted a newly-written song titled "Merry Go Round," a stellar and infectious rock track complete with some shining harmony vocals. Every time Blunstone's amazing tenor would fly or Argent would take off on a virtuoso keyboards solo, crowd members would cheer.

The Zombies' closed out their magical set with a terrific version of their first hit "She's Not There," which featured Argent and Toomey trading flashy solos before Koch and Rodford got into the act showcasing their artful chops too.

Wilson's headlining performance was more complex for the audience — as well as yours truly — to process. Wilson, 77, had postponed a two-week tour in June 2019 focused on "Pet Sounds," noting his long-running bout with mental illness was behind the decision.

Watching Wilson wheeled on stage and positioned behind a piano (often motionless during parts of the 95-minute performance) was surprising and unsettling for many in the crowd, but the good news is that the celebrated singer-songwriter brought a terrific ensemble with him to recreate a parade of timeless classics from the 1960s and early '70s.

Chief among the contributors who brought the classics to life were his Beach Boys bandmates Al Jardine and Blondie Chaplin. Jardine, 76, was particularly strong throughout the show with his excellent work on rhythm guitar and vocals adding to the effectiveness of the set. Indeed, Jardine conjured up magic when nailing the lead vocals on "Help Me, Rhonda," a 1965 hit that first showcased his vocals in the group. Chaplin's vocals and fiery guitar work was put in the spotlight during a rousing take on "Sail On Sailor."

A total of 29 songs were performed, with the biggest hits coming at the beginning of the set and later to close things out. In the middle of the set were 17 mostly-unknown gems pulled primarily from under-the-radar LPs Wild Honey (1967), Friends (1968) and Surf's Up (1971). Particularly stirring of these lesser-known songs was the melodic "Darlin' " (featuring fantastic vocals from keyboardist Darian Sahanaja) psychedelic surf rocker "Meant For You," probing "Til I Die," and vocally-dense "Heroes and Villains."

The night ended on a high note with Wilson and company unleashing many of the Beach Boys' best known top hits including a faithful rendition of "Good Vibrations," the aforementioned "Help Me, Rhonda," "Barbara Ann," "Surfin' U.S.A.," and night-ending "Fun, Fun, Fun."

For the No Pier Pressure sessions, Brian Wilson reunited with longtime collaborator Joe Thomas, with whom he co-produced The Beach Boys' No. 3 Billboard album That's Why God Made The Radio for the iconic band's 50th anniversary reunion in 2012.  In addition, Wilson was  joined at Hollywood's Ocean Way Studios by talented musicians he personally invited to record with him, including his former Beach Boys bandmates Al Jardine, David Marks and Blondie Chaplin, as well as Kacey Musgraves, fun.'s Nate Ruess, She & Him's Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward, Peter Hollens, Capital Cities' Sebu Simonian, and trumpet master Mark Isham.  Wilson has also brought in session all-stars Don Was, drummer Jim Keltner, Dean Parks, and Kenny Aronoff.  Members of Wilson's longtime touring band, including Scott Bennett, Paul Mertens, Darian Sahanaja, and Probyn Gregory also participated in the sessions, along with Matt Jardine, son of Al Jardine, and former bandmate Jeffrey Foskett.  Wilson and Thomas began collaborating on the new songs during The Beach Boys' whirlwind 50th anniversary activities throughout 2012, a banner year for the band which also included a GRAMMY® Award win for Brian for The Beach Boys' long-awaited SMiLE Sessions release.  He told family, friends, and journalists around the world that he looked forward to returning to the studio when he got back home to California.   Always most inspired when creativity is given time and space to freely flow, Wilson initially envisioned the sessions for his new album with The Beach Boys in mind, but that was not to be.  Wanting to find the right voices to complete his vision, Wilson saw an opportunity to finally become hip with his kids and recruited some amazing young vocalists who have been inspired by his music to do the job.  Throughout his iconic career, Wilson has brought ingenious vision to his own compositions, as well as to those for which he has collaborated, weaving a lush, vibrant tapestry of intricately nuanced vocal harmonies and instrumental arrangements for himself, his bandmates and others.  For more than 50 years, fans have marveled at the sheer beauty of the music that springs forth from Wilson's imagination into glorious song. Camped out at Ocean Way, Wilson took a fluid, woodshedding approach to the recording process, deftly tailoring the vocal and instrumental parts and arrangements to each participant.  Wilson worked to hone the arrangements, often assembling pieces from various takes, a signature style of recording he has enjoyed since his earliest sessions with The Beach Boys.  In fact, several of the songs were written during the recording process. Brian Wilson began his career as a teenaged founding member of The Beach Boys, who signed with Capitol Records in July 1962 and released their first album, Surfin' Safari, that same year. The band's initial surf-rock focus was soon broadened to include other themes, and 1966's Pet Sounds is universally hailed as one of the greatest albums of all time.  Wilson's innovative vocal and instrumental arrangements for major hits including "I Get Around," "California Girls," "Wouldn't It Be Nice," "God Only Knows," and the No. 1 smash "Good Vibrations" made The Beach Boys America's preeminent band of the 1960s. Brian Wilson has also achieved great solo success with 10of his own albums released to date, including his acclaimed 2004 completion of an album he first began recording in the '60s, Brian Wilson Presents...
