Relive groundbreaking hitmakers of the 1950s and '60s via 'Ed Sullivan's Rock & Roll Classics'

Title: Ed Sullivan's Rock & Roll Classics (Time Life)

You might like if you enjoy: The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Four Tops, The Animals, Fats Domino, Janis Joplin, classic rock and soul music

Tell me more: Watching the enthralling 10-disc collector's set of Ed Sullivan's Rock & Roll Classics is to be immersed in the groundbreaking sounds of a wide-ranging lineup of groundbreaking artists who made their collective mark on the charts in the 1950s, '60s and early '70s. The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Bee Gees, Buddy Holly, Elvis Presley, The Jackson 5, The Rolling Stones, Fats Domino, The Supremes, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Stevie Wonder and Creedence Clearwater Revival are among the many notables who are seen via 128 live and uncut performances on the stellar collection.

Long celebrated for his uncanny ability to recognize up-and-coming music greats, Sullivan brought icons including Presley, Holly, The Beatles, Bee Gees, The Supremes and The Rolling Stones to his Sunday Night prime-time variety show early in their careers. This deluxe collection (which retails for $119.96) allows modern-day audiences to fully appreciate The Ed Sullivan Show's unique role in history as a showcase for several generations of popular music legends. Among this writer's favorite performances on the 10-disc set are The Four Tops' medley of 1965 hits ("It's the Same Old Song/Something About You/I Can't Help Myself"), The Lovin' Spoonful's "Do You Believe in Magic," The Animals' rocking "Don't Bring Me Down," The Rolling Stones' rousing "Paint It, Black," and Holly's "Peggy Sue" and "That'll Be the Day," as well as the thrilling turns from Presley, The Band, The Byrds and The Beatles. Throughout the years, the studio sets and production values of the performances grew more ambitious as evidenced by the cosmic-styled medley of The 5th Dimension's "Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In" filmed in May 1969, and the Ike and Tina Turner Revue's explosive version of the Creedence Clearwater Revival hit "Proud Mary" in January 1970.

In addition to the performances, there are bonus interviews and brief newsreel-aided segments that shed light on the cultural and historic highlights of the times in which these performances were captured. A 36-page "Collector's Book" that features liner notes, trivia and wonderful photos enhances the title.

The best of popular music from the 1950s, '60s and early '70s is truly captured across Ed Sullivan's Rock & Roll Classics.

Don McLean sets special concert event on February 3, 2021 at The Surf Ballroom In Clear Lake, Iowa to Kick-Off "American Pie" 50th Anniversary Tour

Exciting news for fans of Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, The Big Bopper and Don McLean...

Don McLean Sets Special Concert Event on February 3, 2021 at The Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa to Kick-Off “American Pie” 50th Anniversary Tour
CLEAR LAKE, Iowa – Legendary singer/songwriter Don McLean released his iconic album American Pie in 1971, and now 50 years later will perform at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa, on “The Day The Music Died,” February 3, 2021. This historic night will honor Richie Valens, Buddy Holly, and The Big Bopper as it marks the 62nd anniversary of the 1950 plane crash that killed the American rock ‘n’ roll musicians. In addition, it will officially kick-off the American Pie 50th Anniversary World Tour, which will take McLean to Australia, New Zealand, England, Ireland, and many more places to be announced soon!

Most can recite McLean’s hit single “American Pie” by heart, but not all know the meaning behind the song. This fatal day is known as the “The Day the Music Died” coined by McLean’s 1971 hit “American Pie,” written to honor the legacies of the early rock legends who lost their lives in the tragic plane crash.

“February 3, 1959 was a tragic day for all of us who lost our heroes in that plane crash. While writing “American Pie,” I felt it was important to remember this incident that to me, was still fresh,” shares McLean. “Now, we will return to the last venue they performed at on the anniversary of the crash to kick off the 50th Anniversary American Pie World Tour.”

About Don McLean:
Don McLean is a Grammy award honoree, a Songwriter Hall of Fame member, a BBC Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, and his smash hit “American Pie” resides in the Library of Congress National Recording Registry and was named by the Recording Industry of America (RIAA) a top 5 song of the 20th Century. A New York native, Don McLean is one of the most revered and respected songwriters in American history. After paying his dues in the New York club scene in the late ‘60s, he went on to score mega-hits like “Vincent (Starry, Starry Night),” “Castles in the Air” and many more. His catalog of songs has been recorded by Madonna, Garth Brooks, Josh Groban, Drake, Weird “Al” Yankovic, and countless others. In 2015, one of McLean’s four handwritten manuscripts of the lyrics to “American Pie” was auctioned by Christies, selling for just over $1.2 Million. 2019 honored Don with a star on the Las Vegas Walkway of Stars and his song “And I Love You So” was the theme for Prince Harry and Megan Markle’s wedding. Now in 2020, Don signed a recording contract with Time Life to release his catalog of recordings as well as the highly anticipated new album Still Playin’ Favorites, was released October 23rd. “American Pie” will be featured in the Avengers Black Widow and the Tom Hanks movie BIOS and much more to be announced. And when you think things are slowing down, not so for Don McLean! 2021 will mark the 50th anniversary of American Pie with a world tour to follow.

R.I.P. Little Richard, December 5, 1932 - May 9, 2020.

Little Richard at the Doheny Blues Festival in 2002.

Very sad news today that Little Richard, one of rock 'n' roll's founding fathers has passed away. He was 87. I caught the legendary artist only once when I saw him perform in 2002 at the Doheny Blues Festival in Dana Point.

A must have reissue of many of Little Richard's
greatest recordings is available via Craft Recordings/Concord Music
And I was reintroduced and gained a much greater appreciation of Richard Wayne Penniman's artistry and influence thanks to the wonderful reissue of Here's Little Richard issued by Craft Recordings/Concord Music released in 2017. This expanded edition of the album includes 22 tracks of bonus material, eight of which are previously unreleased. You can read my review of that must-have release here.

Little Richard with The Beatles
His recordings of blistering rockers such as "Long Tall Sally," "Rip It Up," "Good Golly Miss Molly," "Ready Teddy," "Tutti Frutti," and "Lucille" influenced everyone from the Beatles, The Rolling Stones and Elton John to David Bowie and Rod Stewart; his dynamic stage persona was an obvious inspiration for Prince.

Indeed, Elvis Presley, Bill Haley and Buddy Holly all covered his songs. Check out The Zombies' super cool cover of the deep 1958 bluesy cut "Early In The Morning" below:

Little Richard was one of the first artists to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (in 1986), and he also earned a Lifetime Achievement Award at the GRAMMY® Awards. In 2010, Little Richard was listed as number eight in Rolling Stone's "100 Greatest Artists of All Time."

"Inductee Little Richard ripped-up the Fifties," said Greg Harris, President & CEO of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. "His unrestrained musicality and charismatic persona created a rock and roll blueprint followed by generations. Songs like 'Tutti Frutti,' 'Long Tall Sally,' and 'Good Golly, Miss Molly' were amplified by Richard's rockin’ piano, rolling rhythms and an electric stage presence. His sound and style were the cornerstones of rock & roll, and his outrageousness and rebellious spirit challenged the world to change."

Ringo Starr posted this on Twitter after hearing the news: "God bless Little Richard one of my all-time musical heroes. Peace and love to all his family."

I think Mick Jagger's appreciation posted on Twitter this morning speaks volumes about Little Richard's influence: "I'm so saddened to hear about the passing of Little Richard, he was the biggest inspiration of my early teens and his music still has the same raw electric energy when you play it now as it did when it first shot through the music scene in the mid '50s. When we were on tour with him I would watch his moves every night and learn from him how to entertain and involve the audience and he was always so generous with advice to me. He contributed so much to popular music I will miss you Richard, God bless."

His band mate Keith Richards reflected: "So sad to hear that my old friend Little Richard has passed. There will never be another!!! He was the true spirit on Rock 'n Roll!"

An illustration of Little Richard by Rolling Stones
guitarist/artist Ronnie Wood that was posted today
via Wood's Twitter feed.

Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood posted an original illustration he completed of Little Richard: "I shall miss him. God bless Little Richard ~ rest in peace"

Canadian singer-songwriter Ron Sexsmith posted: "RIP The Incredible Little Richard, RS"

Rediscover top-tier artists via outstanding releases

A handful of new releases bring much-deserved attention to an equal number of influential artists.

Artist: Marshall Crenshaw
Title: Miracle of Science (Shiny-Tone)
You might like if you enjoy: Jason Falkner, The Smithereens, Matthew Sweet
Tell me more: The newly-available reissue of Marshall Crenshaw's 1996 classic Miracle of Science is a true gem worth adding to your music library. In addition to several bonus tracks being included on the new version, Crenshaw undertook a number of technical steps to enhance the sound across the disc (it was originally recorded digitally and there was not an analog master tape; one was created this time to help create the vinyl release of the reissue). The enticing earworm "What Do You Dream Of?" is a mix of power pop and early rock 'n' roll sparkle. Track after track exudes a wealth of melodic riches and affecting song craft; the '60s-mining alt country rocker "Who Stole That Train," shimmering "Only An Hour Ago," ornate "Laughter" and mysterious "A Wondrous Place" are early standouts on "Miracle of Science." The literate "Twenty-Five Forty-One," tuneful "Starless Summer Sky" and "There and Back Again," along with the bonus tracks "What The Hell I Got" and "Misty Dreamer" extend the magic on the last half of the terrific reissue. While there are guests to be sure (including multi-instrumentalist Bill Lloyd and guitar great Pat Buchanan), the talented Crenshaw produced the album while handling lead vocals, guitar, bass, keyboards, percussion, tambourine and even "wine bottles" across "Miracle of Science." Information: MarshallCrenshaw.com.

Artist: America
Title: Heritage II: Demos/Alternate Takes 1971-1976 (Omnivore Recordings)
You might like if you enjoy: America, Andrew Gold, Neil Young, David Crosby
Tell me more: Time has been more than kind to the music of America. Recent headlining tours have helped shed a welcome reassessment of the groundbreaking trio (Dan Peek died in 2011, but Dewey Bunnell and Gerry Beckley have carried on with a top-tier touring band). Add to the renewed interest in the band the newly-issued Heritage II: Demos/Alternate Takes 1971-1976, an essential collection of demos, alternate studio takes and live jams captured during the beginning of America's time working with producer Sir George Martin. The evocative lure of "Cornwall Blank," piano-anchored Beckley ballad "Mandy" (a song previously not released), an alternate mix of the hit "Tin Man" with a focus on the backing vocals, and alternate mix of the winning "Simple Life" all add depth to America's legacy. Other highlights include an intimate demo of Beckley's baroque ballad "What Does It Matter," luxurious vocals-and-strings slice of Peek's "You" produced by Martin and engineered by Geoff Emerick, and the Bunnell folk rock original "Amber Cascades." The biggest surprise on the disc may well be the ambitious instrumental jam "Jameroony" featuring Bunnell, Beckley and Peek showcasing their skills on acoustic guitars for more than 12 glorious minutes. Information: OmnivoreRecordings.com and venturahighway.com.

Artist: Andrew Gold
Title: Something New: Unreleased Gold (Omnivore Recordings)
You might like if you enjoy: Andrew Gold, Graham Nash, 10cc
Tell me more: A true treasure trove of previously-unheard material graces Something New: Unreleased Gold, a 16-track collection of Andrew Gold demos he originally produced with Chuck Plotkin that soon earned him a recording contract with Asylum Records. The recordings showcase Gold's mastery of writing and performing original songs. The material spans from melodic pop ("Something New," "Prisoner") and soft rock ("Resting In Your Love," "Don't Bring Me Down," "A Note From You") to ballads (the lovely "Come Down To Me," roots-swept "Ten Years Behind Me") and singer-songwriter sophistication ("What You Do Is What You See," "Timothy Corey," "To Be Someone"). The collection features liner notes penned by Grammy Award-winning producer Peter Asher. Sadly, Gold died of heart failure at age 59 in June 2011. Information: OmnivoreRecordings.com and andrewgold.com.

Artist: Doug "Cosmo" Clifford
Title: Magic Window (Concord Music Publishing ASCAP)
You might like if you enjoy: Bad Company, Mike and the Mechanics, CCR
Tell me more: Drummer Doug "Cosmo" Clifford rose to fame in the late 1960s as a member of Creedence Clearwater Revival and has enjoyed continued success with the related project Creedence Clearwater Revisited. But even life-long fans of both bands likely didn't see Clifford's first-ever solo album coming. The good news is that Magic Window  — recorded in 1985 and rediscovered when the artist was cleaning out his garage last year — is wonderful and makes a compelling case for a quick followup. The new album will please fans of classic rock, from the Bad Company-styled title track and swampy rocker "Born On The South Side" to the power ballad "Don't Leave Me Alone Tonight" and New Wave-tinged "Somebody Love Me Tonight" — and those are just the first four tracks on the set! Clifford proves to be a top-flight lead vocalist and strong tunesmith. The album's first single "Just Another Girl" could well have shot up the Billboard charts in the mid-80s, and it's easy to believe that the melodic rockers "Love Mode" and "Don't Let Go" as well as the power ballad "You Mean So Much To Me" would have scored radio airplay at that time too. Kudos to lead guitarist Russell DaShiell (who assisted with the production of the album), multi-instrumentalist Chris Solberg and guitarist Rob Polomsky for their contributions in the studio. Sights and Sounds: Buddy Holly, The Dixie Dregs, Chris Stapleton, First Aid Kit

Lots of exciting music news to share today...

RAVE ON: THE BUDDY HOLLY STORY

TO BE RELEASED VIA EAGLE ROCK ENTERTAINMENT
ON DIGITAL FORMATS ONLY
~DECEMBER 1, 2017~
New York, NY (December 1, 2017)—One of the most influential Rock and Roll artists of all time, Buddy Holly embossed the music world with an incredible body of music in his all-too-brief career, before his untimely death at the age of 22. Rave On: The Buddy Holly Story, which will be released via Digital Formats by Eagle Rock Entertainment on December 1, traces and celebrates his legacy.
Rave On: The Buddy Holly Story, produced by 1515 Productions, explores Holly’s life and story via interviews with those who knew and worked with him, as well as prominent music fans who were influenced by his work. The film presents contributions from Jerry Allison (original member of The Crickets), Dion, Brian May (Queen), Don McLean, Paul Anka, Edna Gundersen (USA Today), Larry and Travis Holley (Buddy’s brothers), and Holly’s widow, Maria Elena Holly, as well as others.
Hailing from Lubbock, TX, Buddy Holly introduced a revolutionary take on melodies and rhythms that stretched beyond the traditional blues roots of Rock and Roll. In the 1950s age of solo stars, Holly led his pop group The Crickets with a songwriting approach that pushed pop music to new creative heights, as evidenced by his breakthrough hit “That’ll Be The Day”, “Peggy Sue”, “Everyday”, and his other classics. With his thick-rimmed glasses, lanky stature and “hiccupping” vocalizations, Holly presented a new, unique image and sound that cemented his status as an icon.
Buddy Holly’s life was tragically cut short in a plane crash in February 1959. However, the musical imprint he left in the mere 18 months after the release of “That’ll Be The Day” rendered him immortal. His story deserves to be told again for a new generation, which Rave On: The Buddy Holly Story proudly delivers.

The performances will mark the first time in 40 years the original band--Steve Morse (guitar), Andy West (bass), Allen Sloan (violin), Steve Davidowski (keyboards) and Rod Morgenstein(drums)--will share the stage. Tickets are on sale now.

The "DAWN OF THE DREGS" 25-date tour--with additional dates to be announced soon--will take the band across the country starting on February 28 in Clearwater, FL and make stops in Atlanta, Charleston, Washington D.C., New York City, Boston, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Chicago, Milwaukee, Boulder and Phoenix, among many others, before wrapping April 25 inDallas, TX. For more information about the "DAWN OF THE DREGS" tour and to purchase tickets, visit:http://dixiedregs.com/.

"This tour is the result of the overwhelming requests we've received from a loyal audience of diehard Dregheads, and new fans who have never seen us perform live, but discovered the band for the first time through Steve's membership in Deep Purple, or Rod as the drummer for Winger," said Dreg'sbassist, Andy West. "We can't wait to playfor them all," adds West.

For guitar aficionados, Steve Morse needs no introduction, and his place in the pantheon of guitar greats is certain. But in fact, his career started with the DIXIE DREGS. The band traces its true beginnings to the band Dixie Grit, which started in a Georgia high school with Steve on guitar and Andy West on bass. Dixie Grit morphed into the DIXIE DREGS at the University of Miami School of Music, where Allen Sloan (violin) and Rod Morgenstein (drums) joined up with Steve and Andy, who were the "dregs" of Dixie Grit.

The members of the DIXIE DREGS remained committed to attending the University of Miami School of Music, which hosted a lively and talented musical community during their tenure, including future greats Pat Metheny, Jaco Pastorius, T Lavitz, and Bruce Hornsby, among manyothers. In 1975, the group's demo album, The Great Spectacular, was recorded at the University of Miami and then re-released on CD in 1997.

After graduation, the band moved back to Augusta where Steve Davidowski(keyboards) completed the band. The band paid its dues and honed its skills playing in bars and venues throughout the South in the mid-70's. They established themselves in the firmament of American instrumental music, seamlessly fusing rock with progressive and jazz elements to create a uniquely instrumental-driven style that has stood the test of time.

Based on a short demo and a tip from former Allman Brothers keyboardist Chuck Leavell along with legendary Allman/Dregs tour manager Twiggs Lyndon, Capricorn Records signed the DIXIE DREGS to record Free Fall(1977). The success and critical acclaim of Free Fall announced the DIXIE DREGS to the world, and after its release, they would become a cult-favorite band that would have a lasting influence on much of modern rock.

Singer-Songwriter Don McLean Reflects On "The Day The Music Died" On 58th Anniversary Of Tragic Plane Crash

February 3rd continues to be a date that resonates in the rock world, in part, because of Don McLean's enduring song "American Pie"...

"American Pie" Singer Commemorates Historic Day By Re-Issuing Remastered Vinyl Hit Record, Auctioning Handwritten Lyrics

Buddy Holly

On February 3, 1959, a chartered aircraft crashed in Mason City, Iowa just minutes after takeoff claiming the lives of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, J.P. Richardson – “The Big Bopper” – and the pilot, Roger Peterson.

The fateful day was coined “The Day The Music Died” by Don McLean in his hit “American Pie.” The song was released in 1971 and spent four weeks at No. 1 in 1972. In 2001, thirty years later, the Recording Industry of America named the it the fifth greatest song of the 20th century.

“Buddy Holly was only 22 years old when he died on February 3, 1959. By that time he had recorded something like 60 sides and everyone of them was a hit song and most were hit records. Even the Beatles can not compare to the magnitude of this contribution. The music he made, he invented himself with very little help from others,” said Don McLean.

McLean recently re-released “American Pie” in celebration of its 45th anniversary. Music lovers can now hear his classic songs on their original vinyl format. The single has been newly remastered from analog tape by Robert Vosgien and the lacquers cut by Ron McMaster, both at Capitol Studios in Hollywood.

As the anniversary of the tragic plane crash approaches, McLean has not forgotten the day that inspired his magnum opus. One of McLean’s four handwritten copies of the lyrics to “American Pie” was auctioned by Nate D. Sanders Auctions on January 26, 2017 with the bidding starting at $100,000. It is the second copy to be offered to the public. The first was sold in 2015. The Harvard University Library has a copy, and the final copy is said to have been given to a close friend of McLean. The lyrics are on eight pages of McLean’s personal stationery in blue ink, featuring the American Pie album art of the gold thumbs up and his signature.

Also in remembrance of the lives lost in the accident, The Buddy Holly Center in Lubbock, Texas will have a day-long schedule of events commemorating the anniversary. Events will include free admission to the Buddy Holly Gallery, J.I. Allison House and the First Friday Art Trail.
