Through the use of artifacts, film, text and interactive technology, generations of music fans will have the opportunity to get up close and personal with rare items from nearly every aspect of the Stones’ astonishing five decades at the top.

RECORD STORE DAY UNVEILS OFFICIAL RSD 2013 POSTER

BEGGING THE QUESTION “ARE YOU EXPERIENCED?”

Record Store Day, now in its 6th year as an event in support of the independent record community worldwide, named Jack White as its official ambassador last week. Now the event has also announced the unveiling of its Official Poster for 2013.

The poster (see above) was made from a photo of Jimi Hendrix that was shot in a small record store in New England by Ira Rosen right before the release of Are You Experienced. Jimi was a fan of record stores and spent the morning shopping for some of the latest releases at the time.

Of Record Store Day’s usage of the image for their official poster, Jimi’s sister, Janie Hendrix says, "It's entirely appropriate that an image of Jimi Hendrix is on the official Record Store Day poster. He was an avid music fan and record collector himself and, of course, his recordings are among the most enduring and cherished of all time. Jimi's musical legacy and influence grow with every passing year so, in a sense, he makes Record Store Day last much, much longer than 24 hours."

Only 5,000 copies of the poster will be made. The image is a 24” x 36” poster printed on heavy paper and will be gratis to Hendrix fans at fully participating record stores in the United States. Fans should contact their local store the week of Record Store Day for details.

Also, exclusively for Record Store Day 2013, Experience Hendrix will issue a limited edition individually numbered 7" vinyl single featuring the original mono mixes of "Hey Joe" b/w "Stone Free" which have been unavailable since their original 1966 release.

People, Hell and Angels, an essential new album premiering twelve previously unreleased studio recordings ('68 - '70) completed by Hendrix will be available at independent record stores starting on March 5, 2013.

Record Store Day is managed by the Department of Record Stores and is organized in partnership with the Alliance of Independent Media Stores (AIMS), the Coalition of Independent Music Stores (CIMS) and celebrates the culture of independent record stores by playing host to in-store events/performances, signings and special product releases on a global scale.

Record Store Day takes place annually on the third Saturday of April.

This is an amazing self-less gathering with a lot of love as well as creating the much needed awareness.

About Multiple Sclerosis
  • Every hour in the United States, someone is newly diagnosed with MS, an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system.
  • MS interrupts the flow of information from the brain to the body and stops people from moving.
  • Symptoms range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis.  The advancement, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research and treatment are moving us closer to a world free of MS.
  • Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, with more than twice as many women as men being diagnosed with the disease.
MS affects more than 400,000 people in the U.S. and 2.1 million worldwide.

NPR Premieres Debut Video "I Am Not Waiting Anymore" From Field Report

March 2013 Tour with Sara Watkins

"Enchanting...a breakout debut" -Rolling Stone

"Meticulous...gorgeous" -NPR

"Drop dead elegant" -Esquire

Field Report and NPR present the video for "I Am Not Waiting Anymore" from the band's debut full-length, Field Report, with a First Watch premiere. The emotionally arresting video was directed by Manny Marquez and creates a wrenching narrative of a formerly homeless man seeking healing and redemption amidst the urban decay of Field Report's hometown, Milwaukee. Here is the link: http://www.npr.org/blogs/allsongs/2013/02/20/172503021/first-watch-field-report-im-not-waiting-anymore?sc=tw&cc=twmp.

By listening to Chris Porterfield's lyrics on repeat during his daily bike rides through Milwaukee, director Marquez says, "I started to see this world that he was creating, a world that was this Field Report album. It reminded me of Raymond Carver's work or Sherwood Anderson's Winesburg, OH. You have this series of seemingly normal situations, and people in different phases of life dealing with these situations. I'm talking about love, lost love, happiness, and longing. And with all the empty factories and old houses in Milwaukee, the town just set the scene."

Marquez continues, "The most difficult part of shooting the video was the scene in the church food program at the end. That's St. Ben's in Milwaukee, and it's a wonderful place where the Capuchin Brothers feed about 400 people every night. We had to shoot it in a way that the only faces seen were those of the people that wanted to be in the video, and respect all the other people that were just there for a meal."

Field Report will play songs off their widely praised 2012 record across the US this spring. They will headline a handful of dates before appearing at SXSW in March, followed by a tour of the East Coast with Sara Watkins.

ROOTS ROCKERS MORELAND & ARBUCKLE SET TO RELEASE NEW ALBUM ON TELARC THIS SUMMER

Aaron Moreland
Since their beginnings in the Kansas heartland, guitarist Aaron Moreland and vocalist/harpist Dustin Arbuckle have captured the visceral spirit and raw energy of the early 20th century Delta blues and distilled it all down to a hard-driving and powerful garage-rock configuration.

Working for the first time with Seattle-based record producer Matt Bayles (Mastodon, Minus The Bear, Sword, Norma Jean), Moreland & Arbuckle are set to release a new collection of “raw, dirty, primal sounds” (USA Today) on Telarc, a division of Concord Music Group, in late summer 2013.

The follow-up to the band’s acclaimed 2011 release Just A Dream, this new recording captures the excitement of their live shows, showcasing the best of Moreland’s dynamic and compelling guitar work – and his custom cigar-box guitar – Arbuckle’s emotionally charged vocals and edgy harp, along with a rock-solid backbeat of drummer Kendall Newby.

Dustin Arbuckle
I caught Moreland & Arbuckle in a fantastic 45-minute outing when they opened for Buddy Guy in September 2011. Read my review of that show here.

Inbox Update: Faster Horses Festival, Johnny Marr, Morrissey and more!

Happy Presidents' Day everybody. Here is a brief overview on what's happening...

Jason Aldean, Dierks Bentley and Luke Bryan will headline at the first-ever Faster Horses Festival, a three-day music festival coming to Brooklyn, Michigan, July 19-21. Sounds kind of like the Stagecoach Festival that has been so successful in Indio, CA. You can read more details here.

Former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr has a fantastic solo album (The Messenger) coming out on Feb. 26. You can stream it now on Rolling Stone via this link.

Speaking of The Smiths, Morrissey has cancelled a string of concert dates this month. Billboard has an update on the famed singer. Lets hope the former Smiths frontman gets well soon.

Music history is filled with examples where artists bust out of the gate with what ultimately proves to be their best album (The Stone Roses, Boston, The Cars, The Flying Burrito Brothers and The Outfield immediately come to mind). But what about bands whose sophomore proved to be their peak? Check out this article titled "20 Artists Whose Second Album Was Their Best." I don't necessarily agree with all of the author's picks (The Shins, for example), but it's compelling stuff...

Sights and Sounds: Gary Clark Jr. and Alabama Shakes coming to 'Austin City Limits' this weekend

For those who have heard about Gary Clark Jr. and Alabama Shakes but have not yet been able to see what all the well-deserved fuss is about, check out the next episode of Austin City Limits. Here is the official news release that just landed in my inbox! I'll definitely be tuning in...

Austin City Limits Showcases the Next Generation of Rock 'n' Soul
New Episode Featuring Gary Clark Jr. and Alabama Shakes Airs February 16

Austin, TX—February 15, 2013—Austin City Limits (ACL) presents two game-changers, Austin's own Gary Clark Jr. and Alabama Shakes, bringing modern blues and soul to a new generation. The power of live performance is front and center as rock 'n' soul phenomenon Clark and soulful quartet Alabama Shakes take the ACL stage in separate showcases. The new episode airs February 16th on PBS Stations.

“I've been wanting to do this for sixteen years” says a stoked Gary Clark Jr. from the Austin City Limits stage. “It feels so good to be here right now.” Long Austin's favorite son, the twenty-eight year old bluesman exploded onto the music scene when he delivered an incredible debut performance at Eric Clapton's 2010 Crossroads Guitar Festival. Born and raised in Austin, Clark began playing guitar at age 12, tearing up hometown stages since he was a teenager. He made a name for himself across the globe with the release of his critically-acclaimed 2012 major label debut Blak and Blu, and kicked off 2013 with a performance for President and Mrs. Obama at The White House. Clark has earned across-the-board raves for his singular talent, with The New York Times hailing Clark as “a guitarist of deep magnetism and tremendous feel”. The guitar virtuoso flaunts his six-string chops in his ACL appearance, thrilling the audience with a bold mix of blues, rock, soul and funk. Clark made his auspicious ACL debut back in Season 33 as part of the Tribute to Bluesman Jimmy Reed, with Jimmie Vaughan and Omar Dykes, and with his own set Clark proves he's the one to watch.

“He’s already shared the stage with the likes of the Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney and Eric Clapton, but Gary is the essence of what his hometown Austin’s music is all about, “says Austin City Limits executive producer Terry Lickona. “He learned from the best in every genre from the age of 12, and remains true to his heart and his roots. He’s our pride and joy.”

Raucous newcomers Alabama Shakes combine the old and the new to create gritty, joyous and soulfully raw music. Muscle Shoals-inspired and hailing from Athens, Alabama, the foursome enthusiastically blend rock with soul, country, blues and roots. The rock quartet has attracted widespread praise, including their recent Grammy nomination for Best New Artist. Alabama Shakes' style is marked by lead singer Brittany Howard's powerful vocals—which have been compared to those of Janis Joplin and Otis Redding—and the group's irresistible energy. Performing tracks from their breakthrough release Boys & Girls, the band open their ACL debut with the breakout hit “Hold On”, and launch into an ecstatic, transcendent, rafter-shaking set.

“There’s a reason Grammy voters nominated them for Best New Artist of the Year, the same reason we taped this show before they had even released their first record,” says ACL EP Terry Lickona. “Raw talent is hard to miss, and a vocal talent like Brittany Howard comes along once in a decade – if that.”

The historic KLRU Studio 6A, home to 36 years of ACL concerts, has been designated an official Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Landmark. In 2011, ACL moved to the new venue ACL Live at The Moody Theater in downtown Austin.

ACL is produced by KLRU-TV and funding is provided in part by AMD, Budweiser, the Austin Convention Center Department and Dell. Additional funding is provided by the Friends of Austin City Limits. Learn more about Austin City Limits, programming and history at acltv.com.

Fan Favorite Frampton Concert Receives First Time Blu-ray Release

~ On DVD, Blu-ray and Digital Video – March 26, 2013~

New York, NY (February 11, 2013)—On March 26, 2013Peter Frampton’s Live In Detroit will be re-issued on DVD and Digital Video, as well as receive its first Blu-ray release, via Eagle Rock Entertainment.

This incredible night was filmed in high definition at the Pine Knob Amphitheatre on July 17, 1999 and mixed in 5.1 Surround Sound. The DVD, originally released in 2000, has been touted as a fan favorite. Supported by one of his most classic bands -- John Regan (bass), Chad Cromwell (drums), and the late Bob Mayo on keyboards – this Grammy Award winning guitarist/recording artist presents two hours of gems culled from his extensive career. “Baby, I Love Your Way,” “Do You Feel Like We Do,” “Show Me The Way,” “Somethin’s Happening,” “(I’ll Give You) Money,” and many more are all brilliantly on display here.

Additionally, Live In Detroit includes a bonus interview with Peter Frampton and previously unseen rehearsal footage of “Boot It Up,” from the recent “FCA! 35” tour.

Eagle Rock Entertainment recently released FCA! 35: An Evening With Peter Frampton on DVD and Blu-ray, and The Best Of FCA! 35 3CD. These releases are stunning examples of Peter Frampton’s live expertise and musical excellence.
