The shimmering opener "No Rain, No Flowers," soulful "Make You Mine," melodic indie rocker "A Little Too High," playful romantic romp "Babygirl," melancholy-filled "Down to Nothing," edgy indie rocker "Man On A Mission" and dance floor-ready "Kiss It" are among the standouts on the Black Keys' 13th album. Artist: Cheap Trick
Title: All Washed Up (BMG) You might like if you enjoy: Cheap Trick, Matthew Sweet, Green Day
Tell me more: Cheap Trick returned in a big way in 2025 through a number of high profile appearances (including at the Kennedy Center Honors on Dec. 7 where the quartet performed in honor of their "lifelong brothers" KISS), as well as via the release of the beloved American rock band's 21st studio album All Washed Up. On the 11-track All Washed Up, singer Robin Zander, guitarist Rick Nielsen, bassist Tom Petersson and drummer Daxx X Nielsen deliver a bunch of killer originals with their signature zeal, blending power pop and alt rock with aplomb. They bust right out of the gate with the driving title track, and follow that up with the winning likes of the fiery "The Riff That Won't Quit," haunting "Bet It All" that looks at the dangers of gambling, the melodic romance-themed "The Best Thing," soaring "Twelve Gates," aptly-titled "Love Gone," bewitching "A Long Way to Worcester" and music hall-styled "Wham Boom Bang," the latter album closer really showcasing Zander's impressive tenor vocals. Title: Obsolete Path (Big Stir Records)

Tell me more: North Carolina-based singer-songwriter Chris Church is not afraid to mix up a wide range of rock styles in the service of his top-tier songcraft, and that approach works wonders across his latest album Obsolete Path. The indie rocker "Sit Down" with its exhilarating guitar play, wistful New Wave mining "I Don't Wanna Be There," sumptuous power pop gem "She Looks Good in Black," rollicking "Life On A Trampoline," melodic noise rock strike "Running Right Back To You," electric guitar-whipped melodic rocker "The Great Divide," genre-defying "Vice Versa" (the latter featuring Bill Lloyd on mandolin) and Americana rocker "Like A Sucker" are among my favorite tracks on Obsolete Path. Tell me more: Garbage returned in late May with Let All That We Imagine Be The Light, the groundbreaking band's eighth studio album and one of the truly great discs of 2025. The 10-track album produced by the quartet and longtime engineer Billy Bush is filled with originals that are as literate as they are powerful; the songs here crafted with in-the-pocket rhythms, sharp guitar layers, an electronic veneer, nuanced dynamics, soaring choruses and singer Shirley Manson's signature vocals all delivered in the service of strong convictions. Among the terrific cuts on the album is the sumptuous opener "There's No Future in Optimism" with its mix of electronica and rock textures surrounding Manson's enticing vocals, the driving electronic rocker "Get Out My Face AKA Bad Kitty," fiery "Chinese Fire Horse" looking at the bias faced by women as they grow older, the tender "Hold," experimental rocker "Radical" and thought-provoking closer "The Day That I Met God." Tell me more: Tapping into top-tier classic rock and power pop stylings, the Gold Needles' newly-issued Mood Elevator is definitely worth adding to your music library. The members of the gifted English quintet (Simon Dowson, lead vocals, guitar; Dave Burbage, lead guitar; Mark English, keyboards; Carl Slaughter, bass; Will Jones, drums) have found a commanding way to take their influences and make them into their own across a terrific 10-track disc. Tell me more: Already celebrated for her signature vocals, sterling songwriting and role as a founding member of both The HawtThorns and CALICO, KP Hawthorn released her outstanding full-length solo album Til The Glitter End in September 2025. The new album — which finds Hawthorn contributing vocals, acoustic guitar, keyboards, mandolin and percussion along the way — was co-produced by Hawthorn with Steve Berns, and recorded at The Fitting Room Studio in Nashville. The lead-off track "Fool's Gold" immediately highlights Hawthorn's rich soprano, a beautiful instrument that carries emotional weight with each note. Tell me more: Singer-songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Peter Holsapple has earned countless accolades for his previous work, including his role in The dB's and Continental Drifters — two influential bands he co-helmed over the course of acclaimed albums like 1981's Stands for deciBels and 1998's Vermilion as well as his studio and touring contributions with R.E.M. and Hootie & the Blowfish. Holsapple returned in 2025 with a terrific solo album, The Face of 68, whose heady mix of muscular rock, melodic power pop and experimental flourishes draws comparisons with the likes of Cheap Trick, dada and the Smithereens. The riveting opener "Anytime Soon" bridges power pop and modern rock with an undeniable energy, Holsapple's vocals a perfect fit amidst the melodic garage rock soundscape and his raging guitar play. Tell me more: Sonically sumptuous, lyrically rich and never less than bewitching, the fourth album from Japanese Breakfast — For Melancholy Brunettes (& sad women) — is a captivating full-length release showcasing the singular talents of singer-songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Michelle Zauner. The aptly-titled album finds Zauner delving headlong into melancholy, which she notes "as a kind of anticipatory grief, one that comes from an acknowledgement of the passage of time, from the recognition of mortality and finitude." Tell me more: John Oates returned in 2025 with Oates, an extraordinary new album that marked his return to the soulful R&B-meets-pop sounds that helped rocket the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame duo Daryl Hall and John Oates to fame in the 1970s and '80s. Identical twins/vocalists/multi-instrumentalists Brandt and Matt Huseman, bassist/keyboardist Paul Krysiak and guitarist Tony Waddy have crafted a 10-track bona fide masterwork that thrills across its fast-moving track listing. The parade of stellar cuts includes the blistering melodic opener "Cold Open," dreamy "A Glorious Lie" (whose lyrics focus on a tale of Baltimore's Belvedere Hotel and a 1926 visit from the Queen of Romania), stirring "Southern Hospitality," prog rock-mining "Gray," instantly-memorable "I Hate Going To Hutzler's," luxurious "Fallsway," and pointed "Beth Steel" (the latter is an affecting track chronicling a former employee of Maryland's now-shuttered Bethlehem Steel plant). Tell me more: In late spring, Styx roared back with the band's 18th studio album Circling From Above, an ambitious concept album whose 13 tracks look at the human experience as explored through the dissimilar worlds of modern technology and nature. The concept album is an intoxicating listen, with the band's signature sound celebrated via top-tier songs featuring the contributions from all seven members of Styx — founding guitarist-vocalist James "JY" Young, guitarist-vocalist Tommy Shaw, original bassist Chuck Panozzo, drummer Todd Sucherman, keyboardist-vocalist Lawrence Gowan, guitarist-vocalist Will Evankovich and bassist Terry Gowan. Among my favorite tracks on the first half of the disc are the soaring "Build and Destroy" featuring Gowan's tenor lead vocals, the introspective rocker "Michigan" featuring Shaw's urgent vocals and the band's lush harmonies, the prog rock foray "King of Love" and beautiful acoustic-flavored "Forgive." The momentum of the masterwork continues with strong originals including the Celtic-mining "Blue Eyed Raven," music hall delight "She Knows," resplendent "Ease Your Mind" and the mellifluous "The Things That You Said." The album closes with the wonderfully bluesy "We Lost the Wheel Again" and genuinely introspective "Only You Can Decide." Tell me more: Otis Taylor is one of the most unique and authentic voices recording blues and roots music today. The winner of five DownBeat awards, Living Blues, W.C. Handy and other honors, the prolific Colorado-based singer-songwriter/multi-instrumentalist has just released the outstanding Otis Taylor and the Electrics. Taylor — who sings and plays guitar, acoustic and electric banjo and harmonica on the 8-track disc — is known for his signature trance blues style that extends far beyond 12-bar blues to masterfully blend blues, rock, African rhythms, improvisation and daring lyrics; those far-flung elements reach their zenith on his new album. Compelling stories and unsettling subjects are addressed across the track listing, with the musical moodscapes enhancing each song. Tell me more: I was recently introduced to Oklahoma-spawned troupe Turnpike Troubadours, whose sixth album The Price of Admission was released in April 2025. An 11-track masterwork where the timeless sounds of neotraditional country, honky-tonk and Americana are fused with songs of incredible lyrical depth, the Shooter Jennings-produced The Price of Admission immerses the listener upon a single listen. Singer-songwriter/guitarist Evan Felker's top-tier voice delivers the wide range of material with real world emotion while the rest of the ensemble delivers nuanced and virtuoso musical accompaniment at every turn. Highlights on the stellar album include the deeply affecting opener "On The Red River" (a powerful song that looks at loss and love for a late father), the countrified "Searching For A Light" that looks at remaining hopeful despite life's bona fide challenges, the uptempo bluegrass-fueled "The Devil Plies His Trade," the exuberant "Ruby Ann" celebrating the magic of new love, and the rousing roots rocker "What Was Advertised." Artist: Michael Ubaldini & the Lonesome Playboys Title: Storms of Trouble (Blackwater Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Gram Parsons, Bruce Springsteen, Hank Williams, Bob Dylan
Tell me more: Acclaimed singer-songwriter Michael Ubaldini returned in 2025 with Storms of Trouble, an EP featuring an outstanding batch of songs that artfully blend Americana, roots rock, alt country and others authentic styles in the service of his signature songcraft. The lead-off title track is a beautiful original where the artist sings of his own challenges with candor and insight, the power of his words bolstered by the roots-swept songcraft. "Lost In The Shuffle" is a rollicking countrified rocker that casts a probing and playful look at love gone wrong. Another standout track on his EP is "Long Road Back to Californy," a rootsy rock song whose lyrical story of the struggles of making a long road trip is simultaneously a metaphor for a journey through life itself.
Two rare bonus tracks round out the EP; "Tombstone Woman" and "One Good Woman Blues" were recorded in Austin, Texas and mastered by Jerry Tubb (the latter whose credits include working on records by John Lennon, Willie Nelson and Paul McCartney).
Storms of Trouble was recorded live in the studio with no overdubs, including Ubaldini's vocals and sharp guitar work. What's more, the title was recorded on analogue tape. Along with Ubaldini on guitar and vocals, the talents of Jeremy Long (piano, organ), John Mctuige (drums) and Jared Manzo (bass) are featured on the title. Now Gulf Coast Records has released Vivino's full-length label debut Gonna Be 2 of Those Days, a rousing celebration of his formidable talents. The 11-track disc kicks off with the catchy blues-rocker "Blues In The 21st," featuring guest guitar great Joe Bonamassa. Vivino's own skills as a songwriter, virtuoso guitarist and great vocalist shine on that opener as well as across the entire album. The nuanced 1960s-mining "Ruby Is Back," New Orleans-styled title track (the latter featuring guest John Sebastian on harmonica and acoustic guitar), driving blues rocker "Beware The Wolf," swinging romance-themed "Crossed My Mind" and Delta blues acoustic foray "Back Up The Country" are among the album's other highlights. Tell me more: The life and legend of legendary actor/photographer/filmmaker Dennis Hopper is revisited and masterfully brought to life via the Waterboys' ambitious album Life, Death and Dennis Hopper. Waterboys band leader Mike Scott chronicles the life and mythos of the late Hollywood icon (Hopper died at age 74 in 2010) via a 25-track masterwork that proves to be one of the Waterboys' greatest-ever albums. While each of the tracks on Life, Death and Dennis Hopper stand on their own as great songs, the album is best listened to in chronological order and in its entirety. Things kick off with the acoustic Americana cut "Kansas," featuring guest lead vocals from singer Steve Earle (who co-wrote the nugget with Scott). Subsequent songs continue to highlight key events in Hopper's life and career; highlights include the jazzy "Hollywood '55" recalling Hopper being cast in "Rebel Without A Cause" and his introduction to actress Natalie Wood; "Live In The Moment, Baby" is a punk rock cut that finds Hopper recalling advice given to him by "Rebel Without a Cause" and "Giant" co-star James Dean; Hopper's fascination with photography is highlighted in the shimmering retro rocker "The Tourist" (the latter featuring backing vocals courtesy of Sugarfoot). Moving along Scott touches on the movie "Easy Rider" in the lush "Blues For Terry Southern" and lilting "Riding Down To Mardi Gras," the lovely instrumental "Daria," the stark "Letter From An Unknown Girlfriend" featuring affecting lead vocals and piano from Fiona Apple, Hopper's successful battle against addiction in the poignant "I Don't Know How I Made It," and spoken word-anchored rocker "Aftermath" reflecting on Hopper's life immediately after his passing. The beloved Tulsa, Oklahoma-spawned power pop legends released Back To California, the band's first new album since 1998's Interstate. Steve Allen (vocals, guitar), Ron Flynt (bass, vocals) and Ray Flynt (drums, percussion) have delivered a new studio album that expands 20/20's discography and legacy. The opening title track is undeniably catchy while simultaneously tapping into sorrow-tinged overtones that are wonderfully palpable. The album's strengths continue to reveal themselves across the 11-track masterwork via literate and instantly-memorable originals. The shimmering "The End Of The Summer" is a melodic juggernaut, bolstered by great lead vocals, sublime harmonies, jangly guitars and an artful arrangement. The edgy guitar-anchored rocker "Springtime Love Song," driving "Lucky Heart," sumptuous "Laurel Canyon" tapping into the mythology of the fabled mountainous area in the Hollywood Hills, infectious romance-minded ear candy "Spark" and heartfelt closer "Farewell" are among the other terrific cuts on the album.
