GHALIA VOLT’S ONE WOMAN BAND

BROOKLYN NY - In celebration of its 30th anniversary, Ruf Records is proud to announce a monumental tour that will showcase the legacy of one of the most influential labels in modern blues history. Since its founding in 1994 by Thomas Ruf, Ruf Records has been a cornerstone of the blues genre, nurturing some of the most renowned and respected artists in the world. The 30th Anniversary Tour is not just a celebration of the label's past but a testament to its ongoing commitment to preserving and advancing the blues tradition. This tour will be headlined by Samantha Fish, with Canned Heat, special guests Mitch Ryder and Bernard Allison, and a special performance by Ghalia Volt’s One Woman Band.

Ruf Records: A Legacy of Blues Innovation

Founded by Thomas Ruf in Germany, Ruf Records has always been more than just a label—it’s been a movement. With a mission to bring blues music to the forefront of the global stage, Ruf Records has been home to an array of legendary artists, including Luther Allison, Devon Allman, Ana Popovic, and Walter Trout. The label’s impact on the blues genre is undeniable, having introduced a new generation of listeners to the raw power and emotional depth of blues music. Ruf Records has consistently pushed the boundaries of the genre, with artists whose music resonates with both purists and newcomers alike.

As Ruf Records celebrates its 30th anniversary, this tour serves as a tribute to both the artists who have shaped its legacy and to the future of the blues, which the label continues to champion. The tour brings together a diverse lineup of performers, each of whom represents a different facet of the blues spectrum, ensuring that the genre’s rich history is honored while also paving the way for its future.

Samantha Fish: A Year of Unstoppable Momentum

Headlining the Ruf Records 30th Anniversary Tour is Samantha Fish, one of the most dynamic and electrifying performers in the modern blues scene. 2024 has been a landmark year for Fish, who has continued to captivate audiences with her powerful guitar work, soulful vocals, and genre-defying style.

Fish’s live performances are nothing short of spectacular, blending raw blues with rock, country, and even punk influences. For this special anniversary tour, Fish will be joined by none other than Mitch Ryder, a rock ‘n’ roll icon whose career spans over five decades. Known for his high-energy performances and hits like "Devil with a Blue Dress On," Ryder will bring an added layer of intensity to Fish’s already explosive set. Together, they are sure to deliver a performance that will be a highlight of the tour and a fitting tribute to Ruf Records' legacy.

Canned Heat: Reverence for a Legendary Career

Another highlight of the Ruf Records 30th Anniversary Tour is the inclusion of Canned Heat, a band whose name is synonymous with the blues-rock revolution of the 1960s. With a career spanning nearly six decades, Canned Heat's line-up features original member Adolfo "Fito" de la Parra, as well as Dale Spalding, Rick Reed and Jimmy Vivino.   Known for their hits "On the Road Again" and "Going Up the Country," Canned Heat has performed at legendary festivals such as Woodstock and remains one of the most influential bands in the history of blues and rock music.

Canned Heat will be supporting their aptly titled album, Finyl Vinyl. To make their set even more special, they will be joined by Bernard Allison, the son of blues legend Luther Allison, the first Ruf Records artist. Bernard has carved out his own path in the blues world, known for his fiery guitar skills and emotive performances. His presence will not only honor his father’s legacy but also add a unique and powerful dynamic to Canned Heat’s performances.

Ghalia Volt: A Rising Star with a One-Woman Band

Adding a fresh and modern twist to the tour is Ghalia Volt, whose One Woman Band has been turning heads since its inception during the pandemic. Born in Belgium, Volt has always been a restless spirit, and when the world shut down in 2020, she found a unique way to keep her music alive. Armed with just her guitar, foot-drums, and a suitcase of bluesy tunes, Volt embarked on a month-long Amtrak journey across America, writing songs and performing solo shows from the train.

This journey not only solidified Volt’s reputation as a fearless and innovative artist but also laid the groundwork for her critically acclaimed One Woman Band project. Volt’s performances are a whirlwind of raw energy, with a sound that fuses the traditional blues of her European roots with the gritty, road-worn vibes of American rock and roll. Her rise to prominence even caught the attention of 60 Minutes, where she was featured in their expansive November 2023 "State of the Blues" story. Her set on the Ruf Records 30th Anniversary Tour is not to be missed, as she represents the future of the genre while paying homage to its storied past.

A Tour for the Ages

The Ruf Records 30th Anniversary Tour is more than just a series of concerts; it’s a celebration of the blues—a genre that continues to evolve while staying true to its roots. With a lineup that includes some of the most influential and exciting artists in the blues world today, this tour is a must-see for any music lover. As Ruf Records enters its fourth decade, this tour stands as a testament to the label's enduring legacy and its unwavering commitment to the blues.

Formed in Dayton, OH in 2001, Hawthorne Heights exploded onto the alt-rock scene with their captivating blend of pop punk, hardcore, and emo. After releasing an album and an EP under their original name, A Day in the Life, the band caught the attention of Victory Records—the storied rock, metal, punk and hardcore label, which boasts Thursday, Between the Buried and Me and Taking Back Sunday among its legendary alumni. Victory Records was acquired by Concord in 2019, while its influential catalog, which spans over three decades, is managed by Craft Recordings.

Weeks after signing to Victory, the five-piece—which, at the time, included lead vocalist/guitarist JT Woodruff, guitarist Micah Carli, guitarist/unclean vocalist Casey Calvert, bassist/backing vocalist Matt Ridenour, and drummer Eron Bucciarelli—entered Madison, WI’s hallowed Smart Studios (owned by Butch Vig and home to classic recordings by Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, and Garbage) to record their debut as Hawthorne Heights, The Silence in Black and White. Working with producer Sean O’Keefe (Fall Out Boy, Plain White T’s, Motion City Soundtrack), the band drew from personal experiences—as well as some of their favorite films—for the album’s 11 anthemic and emotion-filled tracks.

“A lot of the lyrics were inspired by the feeling of being by yourself,” explained Woodruff in a 2014 interview with Killthemusic.com. “Everyone feels isolated to a degree, because we all have to live inside our own minds. Whether we are locked in a small town, struggling in a big city, trapped in a dead-end job, or raised in a harmful environment…we all have to deal with isolation.” He continued, “The album was meant to sound bleak, desolate, sad, but hopeful. It was meant to show that music can be a guiding light, in a world in which the arrow is constantly pointed downward.”

Reflecting those themes are songs like “Silver Bullet,” named for Woodruff’s favorite 80s horror film, and written while he was attending college, working two jobs, and devoting the rest of his time to the band—often second-guessing if they would ever make it. Such uncertainties also feature prominently in “Wake Up Call,” in which Woodruff speaks to the vulnerability that comes with putting songs out into the world. “People are either going to love something or hate it these days,” he wrote in the album’s original liner notes. “I wish there was no such thing as a critic, but I myself am one.” Similarly, “Niki FM” (the music video for which was inspired by the classic teen flick, Say Anything), speaks to the relationship between artists and music journalists. The band also touches upon the highs and lows of life on the road in the emotive “Life on Standby,” while “Ohio Is for Lovers,” which became Hawthorne Heights’ signature tune, found the group yearning for their significant others while on tour.

The latter song became the band’s signature hit—earning regular airplay on MTV, breaking the Top 40 of Billboard’s Alternative Songs chart, and earning a Gold certification from the RIAA. The Silence in Black and White, released in June 2004, found similar success—topping Billboard’s Heatseekers chart, peaking at No.3 and No.23 on the Independent and Rock Albums charts, respectively, and landing at No.56 on the Billboard 200. In addition to earning a Gold certification, The Silence in Black and White also became a landmark title for Victory, as the label’s highest-selling debut album at the time.

Yahoo! Music praised, “[These] punks aren’t afraid of adding a little riffage to their attack arsenal. But while the riffs hurl fast and furious…the band still centers around sentiment.” AllMusic praised their “catchy choruses,” while Alternative Press ranked “Ohio Is for Lovers” at number 88 on their “Best 100 Singles from the 2000s” roundup. An enduring album in the emo canon, The Silence in Black and White remains one of Hawthorne Heights’ bestselling albums—and a beloved fan favorite. In 2014, owing to the LP’s popularity, the band recorded an acoustic version of The Silence in Black and White. Perhaps most importantly, however, the album launched Hawthorne Heights’ lengthy career.

Reflecting on The Silence in Black and White in the LP’s new liner notes, the band writes: “It is impossible to articulate into any language what the last 20 years have meant to us, and how our fans have helped us grow into adults, while living our most wildest dreams…. We think that the art truly begins when we start to build and develop relationships with our fans, and learn who they are and why these songs have helped them. The stories you have told us are equally important to the ones we’ve shared with you, which is exactly why 20 years feels so special.”

They continue, “Hawthorne Heights has experienced catastrophic lows and meteoric highs, all while trying to settle into a comfortable zone somewhere within a normal Midwestern existence… Despite the triumphant and tragedy, we’ve always been able to hold each other together, and we’ve realized that these songs are way more than who we are. They are beacons of hope for whoever needs them, because they’ve always been written from a place where sometimes the darkness overtakes light. That feeling is constant, and will continue to be constant until we are all dead and gone, but the songs continue to shine a light and find their way through the darkness. As our fans share this music with their kids, the relationship of uncaged pure emotional hope will simply grow over time, and what a special journey that will be.”

Today, Hawthorne Heights—whose lineup currently consists of Woodruff and Ridenour, plus Mark McMillon (vocals, lead guitar) and Chris Popadak (drums)—continues to maintain an active schedule on the road and in the studio. To-date, the band has released nine studio albums, including the chart-topping If Only You Were Lonely (2006), Fragile Future (2008), and Skeletons (2010). Last year, Hawthorne Heights thrilled fans with a reimagining of If Only You Were Lonely and released their sixth EP, Lost Lights. The four-piece is currently on an extensive North American tour which culminates with a highly anticipated performance of The Silence in Black and White in its entirety at Las Vegas’ When We Were Young Festival. THE TEMPTATIONS
Meet The Temptations

AUGUST 28, 2024 (New York, NY) — Elemental Music’s ongoing LP reissue series, the Motown Sound Collection, continues with the release on September 13, 2024 of three more classic titles from the Detroit record label’s archives: Marvin Gaye’s In The GrooveDiana Ross And The Supremes’ Love Child, and The Temptations’ debut album, Meet The Temptations (in its original mono).

MARVIN GAYE’S In The Groove
In The Groove was initially released on August 26, 1968, on the Motown subsidiary Tamla Records; however, it was reissued the following year under the title I Heard It Through The Grapevine after that song became a smash success. In The Groove, his first solo studio outing in several years represents the singer reestablishing himself as a solo artist following recordings that paired him first with Kim Weston and later with Tammi TerrellThe album also found Gaye operating without his go-to songwriting team of Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier, and Eddie Holland, who split from Motown in early 1968. In The Groove, which reached #2 on Billboard’s Soul chart, is well stocked with tunes from other Motown hitmakers, such as Nickolas Ashford & Valerie Simpson, Barrett Strong & Norman Whitfield, and Ivory Jo Hunter (including the Stevie Wonder collaboration "Loving You Is Sweeter Than Ever"). There’s also a cover of Goffin & King’s “Some Kind of Wonderful” and two tracks Gaye co-wrote with his then-wife Anna Gordy Gaye, “Change What You Can” and “At Last (I Found a Love).”

DIANA ROSS AND THE SUPREMES’ Love Child
Released on November 13, 1968, Love Child was the group’s 15th studio album; it’s also one of the first studio releases after they became Diana Ross And The Supremes (the name change occurred the prior year when Cindy Birdsong replaced Florence Ballard). The title track, which soon became one of the Supremes’ iconic hits, “Love Child,” achieved a #1 triple crown - topping the Billboard Hot 100, Cashbox Top 100, and Record World’s Top 100 charts in the US, as well as reaching #1 in the UK, New Zealand, and Canada. The album also features the Smokey Robinson song “He’s My Sunny Boy,” a pair of Ashford & Simpson gems (“Some Things You Never Get Used To” and “You Ain’t Livin’ Till You’re Lovin’”), and “Can’t Shake It Loose,” which George Clinton co-wrote while working as a Motown staff writer. Critic Jason Elias’ praised Love Child for having a “late-'60s Motown sound without gimmicks” and proclaiming it “is more than recommended.”

THE TEMPTATIONS’ Meet The Temptations
2024 marks the 60th anniversary of the Temptations’ debut album, Meet The Temptations, which All Music Guide’s Bruce Eder hailed as a “great record” in his 4½ star review. While more a collection of singles than a studio effort, Meet The Temptations provides a fascinating look at how the Temptations’ sound developed over their first recordings as the group worked with different producers, including Berry Gordy, Norman Whitfield, and Smokey Robinson. Among these early singles, only 1962 released “Dreams Come True” broke into the charts. However, the Temptations’ fortunes changed with their 1964 career-launching single, “The Way You Do The Things You Do,” which topped off at #11 on the Billboard Hot 100, hitting #1 on Cash Box’s R&B Single Chart. The song also marked the debut of the classic Temptations lineup, with new member David Ruffin joining Eddie Kendricks, Paul Williams, Melvin Franklin, and Otis Williams. The reissue will come out in mono, just as when Motown first released Meet The Temptations.

These unforgettable Hitsville titles are part of a continuing series of long-playing vinyl reissues of crate digger favorites from the Motown Records catalog. All releases will replicate the ‘60s and ‘70s LPs’ bold sound and 12-by-12 full-color packaging. The Motown Sound Collection will continue with titles scheduled for release through early 2025.

Forthcoming titles include a red vinyl version of the Jackson 5’s Third Album and the mono edition of the Supremes’ A Bit of Liverpool (October 11), the mono versions of Four Tops and Marvin Gaye’s When I’m Alone I Cry (November 15)and The Temptations’ Solid Rock
(December 13).

Founded in 2012, Elemental Music specializes in the release of newly discovered and out-of-print recordings, primarily jazz, blues, and soul. These recordings are meticulously curated and reissued with love.
