New Music: Popular Creeps, Bird Streets, New Riders of the Purple Sage

Three terrific releases are featured in my column this week.

Artist: Popular Creeps
Title: All Of This Will End In Tears (Big Stir Records)

You might like if you enjoy: The Strypes, The Replacements, The Plimsouls, Cheap Trick

Tell me more: Detroit-based rock outfit Popular Creeps has released the terrific album All Of This Will End In Tears, one of the last notable new releases of 2022. Popular Creeps' hybrid of melodic songcraft and garage rock bite proves to be a winning formula across the fast-moving 11-track disc. There is an immediacy heard on the straightforward "Black & Blue," "Gone By 45," and "Wait & See" that bewitches with a single listen. Elsewhere the jangly "Window" and "Split Decision," wistful "Keep It To Myself" (the latter enhanced by stunning guitar work including an extended solo to cap the song's rousing finale), countrified folk rocker "Wait Forever," punk rocker "Tear Me Apart" and emotional closer "Favorite Picture" add to the far-flung magic. The members of Popular Creeps (guitarist-vocalist Lenny Grassa, guitarist-vocalist Andrew Colvin, bassist Joe Heaphy and drummer Dave Nantais) have an obvious musical chemistry that is both impressive and palpable. Information: BigStirRecords.com.

Artist: Bird Streets
Title: Lagoon (Sparkle Plenty Records/Deko Entertainment)

You might like if you enjoy: Big Star, Jason Falkner, Crowded House, Pugwash, Bird Streets' 2018 self-titled debut

Tell me more: Bird Streets — the moniker for singer-songwriter John Brodeur — is back with the ambitious Lagoon. An album of luxurious and literate songs aimed at "separation, rumination, regret and recurrence," the artistic scope of the dozen track collection is elevated by an incredible list of notable collaborators who guest on the project. Indeed, Brodeur's considerable talents as lead singer and guitarist are bolstered by the likes of Aimee Mann, Jody Stephens (Big Star), Ed Harcourt, John Davis, and Buddy Judge (The Grays) along with the production skills of Patrick Sansone (Wilco), Michael Lockwood (Aimee Mann, Fiona Apple), and Zach Jones (Sting) and Oscar Albis Rodriguez (A Great Big World). While the initial recording of Lagoon spanned from the earliest sessions in Nashville in 2019 through time at Ardent Studios in Memphis in February 2020, the sudden arrival of the COVID-19 global pandemic ultimately found Brodeur turning to Los Angeles-based producer Lockwood to work on the project via remote technology for the home stretch. Each and every song on Lagoon hits its mark; the confessional opener "Sleeper Agent," emotive "The Document" (the latter one of the most striking breakup songs in memory), soaring "Let You Down," haunting "Leave No Trace" (featuring Davis' artful sitar playing), confessional "Disappearing Act" and Baroque pop sortie "Unkind" are among the wonderful songs on the masterful collection. Artist: New Riders of the Purple Sage
Title: Lyceum '72 (Omnivore Recordings)

You might like if you enjoy: The Grateful Dead, New Riders of the Purple Sage, Gram Parsons

Tell me more: A magical trip back 50 years awaits music fans who check out New Riders of the Purple Sage's Lyceum '72, a previously unissued opening set from the last night of the Grateful Dead's 1972 European Tour. New Riders of the Purple Sage — whose original lineup included several members of the Grateful Dead —shine across the 17-track concert recording that was recorded on a 16-track machine by Dead engineers Betty Cantor, Janet Furman, Bob Matthews, Rosie McGee and Wizard. The quintet's take on country music is infectious and many of the selections here are familiar beyond the Americana genre. The rowdy "Hello Mary Lou," uptempo "Truck Drivin' Man," infectious "Dim Lights, Thick Smoke (And Loud, Loud Music)" and countrified take on The Rolling Stones' "Honky Tonk Women" are among the wonderful tracks on the disc. Lyceum '72 is available on audio CD and digital with packaging containing photographs and a reminiscence from Sam Cutler, tour manager of The Rolling Stones, the Grateful Dead and New Riders of the Purple Sage.  Information: OmnivoreRecordings.com.

Walter Trout brings high-powered legacy to The Coach House

Walter Trout brought his groundbreaking brand of hard hitting blues to The Coach House in San Juan Capistrano on Saturday night for the first of two shows at the concert venue. A homecoming stop for the 71-year-old Trout — a long-time resident of nearby Huntington Beach — area fans filled The Coach House to catch a two-hour set that highlighted the singer-songwriter/guitar great's original material.

Backed by his incredible three-man band (long-time drummer Michael Leasure, keyboardist Teddy "Zig Zag" Andreadis and bassist John Avila of Oingo Boingo fame), Trout featured material off his 2022 album Ride. His first album since 2020, Ride is notable for its moving material looking at the artist's life — a mix of intoxicating highs and challenging lows.

A survivor of life-threatening liver disease who spent months in a hospital bed while losing 120 pounds and even the ability to walk, Trout's long recovery began when he had a successful liver transplant in May 2014. Trout's miraculous return to the stage (he had to regain his ability to speak, walk and play guitar following the transplant eight years ago) adds a palpable power every time he performs and that was definitely the case on Saturday night.

After an introduction by his wife Marie Trout just after 9 p.m., Trout opened with "I Can Tell," a forceful blues-rocker that played out over eight minutes — the first three minutes or so a blistering display of Trout's masterful fretwork on his electric guitar.

"This is a homecoming for us and it's so great to be back," Trout said after that opener. 

After performing an explosive "Wanna Dance" from his 2020 album Ordinary Madness, Trout noted that Ride is his 30th solo album and "We're going to do a lot of songs from that record."

As part of his performance of the new selections, Trout would often provide details into the genesis of each song. In his introduction of "Waiting for the Dawn," he noted he wrote it in a hotel home at 4 a.m. while unable to sleep, he noted: "I was missing my beautiful wife." A beautiful blues ballad, Trout's signature vocals were positioned amidst artful licks with the exception of a powerful guitar solo that elevated the middle of the track.

The driving "Ride" (a song rooted in Trout's desire to escape a troubled home life when he was a boy growing up in New Jersey), searing "Ghosts" (the latter bolstered by appropriately eerie guitar lines), luxurious "Follow You Back Home" and high octane blues rocker "I Worry Too Much" were other shining songs from Ride. "High Is Low" featured a guest turn from blues harmonica great Bob Landgraff and a blistering solo from Trout. "Destiny" was a gentle ballad, featuring some of Trout's most emotive vocals of the night.

Another standout moment was a performance of "Red Sun," a hard melodic rocker where Trout used cascading waves of feedback to introduce his memorable guitar solo.

This was definitely a homecoming show to remember. 

Freeman-Hale opened the night with a 45-minute set of Chicago blues.

Opening the night was the local quintet Freeman-Hale, featuring singer-harmonica player Tricia Freeman and guitarist Kenny Hale. The troupe delivered a set of Chicago blues-minded material honoring the spirit and stylings of the originals, notably Muddy Waters' "Got My Mojo Workin'," the blues standard "Sweet Home Chicago," the Big Mama Thornton classic "Hound Dog" and B.B. King's "Rock Me Baby."

Deluxe Reissues Roundup: Neil Young, The Beach Boys, Tom Petty, Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie, 'Totally Wired'

With the holiday season in full swing a parade of deluxe reissues and box sets are available. I am also recommending one of the finest studio releases of 2017 (Lindsey Buckingham Christine McVie) in honor of Christine McVie; the legendary singer-songwriter of Fleetwood Mac fame passed away on Nov. 30. I am also recommending a new music-minded title from Paul Gorman. Any of these releases would make a great gift for a favorite classic rock music fan.

Title: Harvest — 50th Anniversary Edition Box Set (Reprise)

Tell me more: Neil Young's February 1972 release Harvest remains a powerful and timeless masterpiece. Indeed, Young's third solo album's outstanding track listing extends from the worldwide hit single "Heart of Gold," bona fide symphonic wonders "A Man Needs A Maid" and "There's A World" to the country rocker "Alabama," otherworldly "Needle & The Damage Done" and introspective masterpiece "Old Man." Now the album is the focus of a well-deserved reissue, Harvest — 50th Anniversary Edition Box Set. In addition to the remastered original album, the deluxe reissue — available on vinyl and audio CD — includes three outtakes from the original Harvest sessions (the countrified "Dance Dance Dance," wistful "Journey Through The Past" and yearning "Bad Fog"), two DVDs and a hard bound book. The first DVD is "Harvest Time," a revealing two-hour, unreleased film shot during the making of Harvest, and includes footage at Young’s Broken Arrow ranch in Northern California, plus the recording sessions in Nashville and London. Tell me more: The Beach Boys' 60th Anniversary celebration continues with the release of Sail On Sailor - 1972, a collection that revisits the landmark 1972 albums Carl And The Passions and Holland. This 6CD set features a 48-page book with extensive liner notes, rare photos and more. The expansive collection includes remastered versions of the original albums along with outtakes and session highlights from the original "Mount Vernon and Fairway" EP from Holland, plus a previously unreleased 1972 concert from Carnegie Hall. What's more, the title includes dozens of studio and live additional tracks, sessions and alternate versions. In all, it contains 105 tracks, 80 of which are previously unreleased. In addition to the 6CD Super Deluxe Edition, Sail on Sailor - 1972 is available as a 5LP+7-inch EP vinyl box set. A true treasure. Tell me more: Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers played 20 nights at the famed Fillmore in San Francisco in 1997. Six of those concerts were professionally recorded and the newly-released Live at the Fillmore, 1997 features highlights from those shows captured 25 years ago. As the so-called "Fillmore House Band," Petty and company were able to vary their setlist each night; as a result a mix of their beloved hits, deep album cuts and artful covers (including classics from Chuck Berry, The Kinks, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones and more) are featured across Live at the Fillmore, 1997. The collection also features special performances with The Byrds’ front man Roger McGuinn and blues legend John Lee Hooker. The 4CD deluxe edition includes 58 tracks (35 of which are covers) totaling more than four hours of music. Tell me more: A breezy and sumptuous album that captures the magic of Fleetwood Mac's Rumors, the first-ever collaboration between Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie was one of 2017's biggest and most welcome surprises. Sadly, Buckingham McVie would also prove to be the final new studio album featuring McVie (who passed away at the age of 79 on Nov. 30, 2022). With 10 terrific songs performed with shimmering arrangements that showcase the affecting voices of Buckingham and McVie, the riches include the infectious "Feel About You," lush "Red Sun," power pop-mining "On With the Show" and piano-anchored ballad "Game of Pretend." A wonderful tribute to the artistry of both McVie and Buckingham. Information: buckinghammcvie.com.

There is something to be said for a rock band that plays music seemingly for no other reason than to have fun. Such was the case with The Immediate Family's joyful 70-minute performance at The Coach House in San Juan Capistrano last night (Dec. 8, 2022). Performing before a capacity crowd at the legendary venue, the quintet thrilled while delivering on singer-guitarist Danny Kortchmar's spot-on description of the band: "We're a cover band that does all original material."

A bona fide supergroup, The Immediate Family features the aforementioned Kortchmar, singer-guitarist Waddy Wachtel, singer-guitarist Steve Postell, bassist Leland Sklar, drummer Russ Kunkel. Frequent collaborators both in the recording studio and on the concert stage, the work of the band members can be heard on albums from the celebrated likes of James Taylor, Jackson Browne, Stevie Nicks, Linda Ronstadt, Keith Richards, Carole King, Graham Nash, Warren Zevon, Neil Young and more.

With their relaxed approach, personable style interacting with the crowd and each other as well as a great set filled with revisited classics, it was a formula that couldn't lose. The band's musicianship was first rate, and it was a true bonus that The Immediate Family features three great lead singers in their ranks.

Opening with a rousing take on Zevon's "Lawyers, Guns and Money," one of many great tracks from 1978's Excitable Boy (both Kortchmar and Kunkel were featured players on that disc), the band proved they have the innate ability to honor a classic track while giving it a signature stamp. That winning approach was repeated across the group's set, notably on a version of Sparks' "Toughest Girl In Town," (bolstered by some fantastic vocal harmonies), the 1983 Don Henley hit "Dirty Laundry" (with great guitar solos from both Wachtel and Kortchmar), the tuneful 1982 Jackson Browne hit "Somebody's Baby" (co-written by Kortchmar), and Henley's "All She Wants To Do Is Dance."

Late set highlights were definitely worth the weight, including a rollicking take on the Wachtel power pop-fueled garage rocker "High Maintenance Girlfriend," the textured "A Thing of the Past" (utilizing the textures of all three guitars and the rhythm section) and night-ending "Werewolves of London."

Seth Swirsky releases new single / music video "Christmas Eve"

Singer-songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Seth Swirsky has just released a wonderful new original holiday song titled "Christmas Eve." 

As Swirsky notes in connection with the captivating and tuneful track "The origin of this song is funny: I met a lovely woman at a Christmas party in New York City awhile back named Eve. We hit it off but she told me she was leaving the next morning to go back to L.A. where she lived. I said, 'I guess I have to wait till next year to see you at this Christmas party again, huh?'. And, for the next three years, that is when I saw Eve; on Christmas Eve at that annual party. She was literally my 'Christmas Eve'!"

You might like if you enjoy: Mavis Staples, the Staple Singers, Ruthie Foster

Tell me more: Ruthie Foster's stirring ninth studio album Healing Time is a fantastic disc of genuine and authentic soul. No surprise that Foster delivers another batch of winning songs that soar, her vocals a constant wonder across the dozen-track disc that simultaneously showcases her immense skills as a top-tier songwriter. The gospel mining "Feels Like Freedom" brings chills with its power and beauty all while avoiding the modern day bombast that would diminish the might of the track. The potent and anthemic "Soul Searching" is an explosive celebration of love. Blues lovers will appreciate the longing "What Kind Of Fool," where the Austin songstress uses her full vocal range across the song's wonderful arc. The wistful "Lie Your Way To The Truth" dips into pop, but the soundscape shares more in common with the artful sonics of Florence + the Machine than the disposable and robotic approach of so many contemporary R&B hitmakers. Other memorable selections on Healing Time include the spiritual-minded "I Was Called," tuneful "Finish Line," acoustic blues foray "4 AM" and majestic "Paradise." Information: RuthieFoster.com.

Title: Only The Strong Survive (Columbia Records)

You might like if you enjoy: Sam Moore, Bruce Springsteen, classic Motown

Tell me more: On his first new album since 2020's Letter To You, Bruce Springsteen revisits a number of Gamble and Huff, Motown and Stax classics on the rousing 15-track Only The Strong Survive. Rather than recreate faithful takes on the material (such as the approach KISS lead singer Paul Stanley took on Paul Stanley's Soul Station's impressive debut album in 2021), Springsteen fuses his own signature sound with the well-known musical stylings identified with the original versions. Among the memorable tracks is an emotive take on the Commodores' 1985 track "Nightshift," the joyous Frank Wilson 1965 hit "Do I Love You (Indeed I Do)," nuanced reading of the Walker Brothers 1966 hit "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore," a tender version of the Four Tops' "When She Was My Girl" and the sorrowful "I Wish It Would Rain," the latter a song recorded by the Temptations in 1967. Springsteen is joined by 87-year-old soul music great Sam Moore on the inspired "Soul Days" and lovely "I Forgot To Be Your Lover." Across the album the receives backing from The E Street Horns, full string arrangements by Rob Mathes, as well as backing vocals from Lisa Lowell, Doozie Tyrell, Curtis King Jr., Michelle Moore, Dennis Collins and Fonzi Thornton. Title: The Legendary Typewriter Tape: 6/25/64 Jorma's House (Omnivore Recordings)

You might like if you enjoy: Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, Hot Tuna

Tell me more: Set for release on Dec. 2, The Legendary Typewriter Tape: 6/25/64 Jorma's House is an important and historical release featuring singer Janis Joplin and guitarist Jorma Kaukonen (Jefferson Airplane, Hot Tuna) — along with Jorma's wife Margareta Kaukonen typing away intermittently in the background — recorded on a reel-to-reel machine at the beginning of their respective careers. Although the recording has previously been available via inferior bootlegs, the official version released by Omnivore Recordings today (Dec. 2, 2022) features restoration and mastering from Grammy-winner Michael Graves and sounds wonderful. There are a mix of originals and reworked blues standards. Joplin's own "Kansas City Blues," the evocative "Hesitation Blues," a moving take on Jimmie Cox's "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out," and the fiery Joplin-penned "Daddy, Daddy Daddy" are among the winning performances captured back in the summer of 1964. New York, NY (November 30, 2022) – The Rolling Stones have today announced the release of GRRR Live!, THE definitive live hits album from the band’s career. Released on February 10 via Mercury Studios, the album will be available in various formats; 3LP black, 3LP coloured white (Indies exclusive) 3LP red (d2c exclusive), 2CD, DVD + 2CD, BluRay+ 2CD. The Blu-ray and digital versions will include Dolby Atmos. The best live band in the world deserve the ultimate live greatest hits album and GRRR Live! is it, The Stones at their best! The album is available to pre-order here and features some of the greatest songs of all time including It’s Only Rock ‘n’ Roll (But I Like It), Honky Tonk Women, Start Me Up, Gimme Shelter, Sympathy For The Devil and (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction. The Rolling Stones celebrated their golden anniversary in 2012 & 2013 by embarking on the 50 & Counting Tour, a 30-show itinerary for North America and Europe. On December 15, 2012, the band took the stage at Newark, New Jersey’s Prudential Center for the final of four shows in the New York area. Featuring guest appearances by The Black Keys (Who Do You Love?), Gary Clark Jr & John Mayer (Going Down), Lady Gaga (Gimme Shelter), Mick Taylor (Midnight Rambler) and hometown hero Bruce Springsteen (Tumbling Dice), the concert proved to be one of the most memorable shows in the band’s history. Since its original airing on pay-per-view in 2012, this show has not been available to fans until now. The concert has been re-edited and the audio has been remixed. Three songs from the December 13 show (also in Newark) will be available as bonus features on the DVD and Blu-ray: Respectable (with John Mayer), Around And Around, and Gimme Shelter.
