Praised by NME as “full of immediacy and action and healthy impatience,” ˆthe five-song EP Chronic Town(1982), co-produced by Mitch Easter, helped define ‘80s college rock, introducing the band’s jangling guitars, enigmatic lyrics, and Southern post-punk spark. Its follow up, Murmur (1983), produced by Mitch Easter and Don Dixon, crystalized that sound into a richly textured, atmospheric debut album of lasting influence, earning widespread acclaim, including Rolling Stone’s 100 Greatest Albums of the 1980s, and its 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Sourced from the original analog master tapes with direct involvement from Easter and Dixon, the 2LP, 180-gram high-definition vinyl set ($124.98) was mastered by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering and pressed at Record Technology, Inc. Presented in a top-quality heavyweight tip-on single pocket jacket, the set is, housed inside a uniquely designed slipcase. Deluxe Reissues Roundup: Neil Young, The Beach Boys, Tom Petty, Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie, 'Totally Wired'

With the holiday season in full swing a parade of deluxe reissues and box sets are available. I am also recommending one of the finest studio releases of 2017 (Lindsey Buckingham Christine McVie) in honor of Christine McVie; the legendary singer-songwriter of Fleetwood Mac fame passed away on Nov. 30. I am also recommending a new music-minded title from Paul Gorman. Any of these releases would make a great gift for a favorite classic rock music fan.

Artist:
Neil Young
Title: Harvest — 50th Anniversary Edition Box Set (Reprise)
You might like if you enjoy: Neil Young, Nils Lofgren, Band of Horses, David Crosby
Tell me more: Neil Young's February 1972 release Harvest remains a powerful and timeless masterpiece. Indeed, Young's third solo album's outstanding track listing extends from the worldwide hit single "Heart of Gold," bona fide symphonic wonders "A Man Needs A Maid" and "There's A World" to the country rocker "Alabama," otherworldly "Needle & The Damage Done" and introspective masterpiece "Old Man." Now the album is the focus of a well-deserved reissue, Harvest — 50th Anniversary Edition Box Set. In addition to the remastered original album, the deluxe reissue  available on vinyl and audio CD  includes three outtakes from the original Harvest sessions (the countrified "Dance Dance Dance," wistful "Journey Through The Past" and yearning "Bad Fog"), two DVDs and a hard bound book. The first DVD is "Harvest Time," a revealing two-hour, unreleased film shot during the making of Harvest, and includes footage at Young’s Broken Arrow ranch in Northern California, plus the recording sessions in Nashville and London. The second DVD is an unreleased BBC In Concert live performance from February 1971. The hard bound book that accompanies the box sets includes 40 photographs, many of which have never been published before, and liner notes by Joel Bernstein. The vinyl box comes with a lithograph and a poster; the audio CD format contains the poster. Information: NeilYoungArchives.com.

Artist:
The Beach Boys
Title: Sail On Sailor - 1972 (Capitol Records/UMe)
You might like if you enjoy: The Beach Boys, classic rock
Tell me more: The Beach Boys' 60th Anniversary celebration continues with the release of Sail On Sailor - 1972, a collection that revisits the landmark 1972 albums Carl And The Passions and Holland. This 6CD set features a 48-page book with extensive liner notes, rare photos and more. The expansive collection includes remastered versions of the original albums along with outtakes and session highlights from the original "Mount Vernon and Fairway" EP from Holland, plus a previously unreleased 1972 concert from Carnegie Hall. What's more, the title includes dozens of studio and live additional tracks, sessions and alternate versionsIn all, it contains 105 tracks, 80 of which are previously unreleased. In addition to the 6CD Super Deluxe Edition, Sail on Sailor - 1972 is available as a 5LP+7-inch EP vinyl box set. A true treasure. Information: TheBeachBoys.com.

Artist:
 Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers
Title: Live at the Fillmore, 1997 (Warner Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Tom Petty
Tell me more: Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers played 20 nights at the famed Fillmore in San Francisco in 1997. Six of those concerts were professionally recorded and the newly-released Live at the Fillmore, 1997 features highlights from those shows captured 25 years ago. As the so-called "Fillmore House Band," Petty and company were able to vary their setlist each night; as a result a mix of their beloved hits, deep album cuts and artful covers (including classics from Chuck Berry, The Kinks, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones and more) are featured across Live at the Fillmore, 1997The collection also features special performances with The Byrds’ front man Roger McGuinn and blues legend John Lee Hooker. The 4CD deluxe edition includes 58 tracks (35 of which are covers) totaling more than four hours of music. Also included in that edition is a 32-page booklet (with previously unseen photographs), three custom guitar picks, a replica All Access laminate, and even an embroidered patch. Live at the Fillmore, 1997 is available as a 4CD box set, a 3LP box set and an expanded 6LP box set. Information: TomPetty.com.

Artist:
Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie

Title: Buckingham McVie (Atlantic Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Fleetwood Mac, Lindsey Buckingham, Christine McVie
Tell me more: A breezy and sumptuous album that captures the magic of Fleetwood Mac's Rumors, the first-ever collaboration between Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie was one of 2017's biggest and most welcome surprises. Sadly, Buckingham McVie would also prove to be the final new studio album featuring McVie (who passed away at the age of 79 on Nov. 30, 2022). With 10 terrific songs performed with shimmering arrangements that showcase the affecting voices of Buckingham and McVie, the riches include the infectious "Feel About You," lush "Red Sun," power pop-mining "On With the Show" and piano-anchored ballad "Game of Pretend." A wonderful tribute to the artistry of both McVie and Buckingham. Information: buckinghammcvie.com.

As part of that account — chronicled across "Totally Wired - The Rise and Fall of the Music Press" — Gorman views the role of not only the noteworthy writers and groundbreaking publications that featured their work, but the photographers and artists themselves who all contributed to the field in essential ways. Muswell Hillbillies / Everybody’s In Show-Biz - Everybody’s A Star

50th anniversary, combined deluxe reissues of these two classic Kinks albums

Listen To A Previously Unreleased Version of “Celluloid Heroes (US Single Version 2022 Edit)

In 1971, the great British rock group The Kinks embarked on a new phase of their career by signing with RCA Records. Freed from their old label Pye’s insistence on hit singles, Ray Davies’ song writing accelerated his band’s move towards a new identity as makers of thematically ambitious, tenderly personal albums, building on preceding cult successes such as The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society. Buoyed by one more smash to start the decade –“Lola” – this most English of bands also firmly turned its sights towards the USA, where their exciting, charismatic live shows were reciprocally building a fervent new American fanbase.

This period’s first Kinks album, Muswell Hillbillies, is for many people their best of all. It conversely looked back on Ray and Dave Davies’ London roots, telling tales of working-class families migrating from the war-torn and redevelopment-ravaged inner city to the strange, leafy suburbs of North London.

“Now with a new record company and a new image, I could bring some of the old wild western spirit into my music,” Ray Davies said. “These albums capture the re-emergence of the Kinks as a touring band.” Dave Davies adds “Muswell Hillbillies is one-of my favorite Kink’s albums. It’s a bit of a backstory to the Davies family and the characters involved.”

Muswell Hillbillies’ release was supported by more US touring, including two 1972 nights at New York’s iconic Carnegie Hall. Tapes of those anarchic shows, heavy on Muswell material, formed the live half of 1972’s double-album, Everybody's In Show-Biz - Everybody’s A Star. Its studio sides explored The Kinks’ long months on the American road with wistful humour. Its epic finale, ‘Celluloid Heroes’, confirmed the band’s new world. Among the elite cream of Kinks songs, it saw Ray use Hollywood as a prism through which to view ordinary Americans’ bittersweet dreams.

The announcement comes alongside the release of “Celluloid Heroes (US Single Version 2022 Edit)”. Ray Davies composed the classic Kinks track reflecting on everyday folk aspiring to be Hollywood stars. The song names several famous actors of 20th century film (including Greta Garbo, Rudolph Valentino, Bela Lugosi, Bette Davis, Marilyn Monroe) and mentions LA’s Hollywood Boulevard, alluding to its Walk of Fame. Taken from The Kinks’ seminal 1972 RCA album Everybody’s In Show-Biz - Everybody’s A Star. Listen to the previously unreleased version HERE.

Very cool news going into the weekend courtesy of celebrated singer-songwriter Pete Yorn...Robert Kinsler

IN CELEBRATION OF THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF HIS DEBUT ALBUM musicforthemorningafter
PLATINUM SELLING ARTIST PETE YORN ANNOUNCES ROOFTOP EP (20 YEARS OF musicforthemorningafter) OUT MAY 5

EP FEATURES UNEARTHED SONGS FROM THE musicforthemorningafter ERA, INCLUDING AN UNRELEASED SONG FROM THE ORIGINAL RECORDING SESSIONS

THE ROOFTOP EP FOLLOWS THE “OUTSTANDING” (AMERICAN SONGWRITER) COVERS ALBUM PETE YORN SINGS THE CLASSICS RELEASED IN JANUARY
Today, platinum-selling singer-songwriter Pete Yorn announces the Rooftop EP (20 years of musicforthemorningafter) in celebration of the 20th anniversary of his critically acclaimed and seminal debut album musicforthemorningafter (2001, Columbia Records). Upon its release, Rolling Stone’s 4 star review called the record “gently lit by sunlight and regret.” SPIN in their retrospective piece today called musicforthemorningafter “one of 2001’s best," referring to Yorn as "one of his generation’s best songwriters.”

The Rooftop EP arrives May 5th and includes four tracks: “Rooftop,” an unreleased outtake from the musicforthemorningafter sessions and three live versions of tracks from the album including Smiths cover “Panic”, “Life On A Chain” and “Lose You”, the latter of which is an emotionally charged performance delivered on his childhood piano.

Yorn says of the album’s anniversary, "We made it in garages in California, in Van Nuys and Culver City...I just made music that I liked and I knew that there were no guarantees of where it would get me... but twenty years later I am really proud of the impact the record has had and it still carries a deep emotional resonance for me.”

LISTEN TO THE EP’S LIVE VERSION OF “LIFE ON A CHAIN” HERE

Rooftop EP Tracklist:
 1. Rooftop (Unreleased outtake from the musicforthemorningafter sessions)
 2. Panic (Live at Y100 Sonic Sessions, Philadelphia, PA - November 24th, 2001)
3. Life On A Chain (Live at Y100 Sonic Sessions, Philadelphia, PA -November 24th, 2001)
4. Lose You (Live from the musicforthemorningafter Quarantine Livestream – July 25th, 2020)

The Rooftop EP follows the release of Yorn’s first-ever covers album, Pete Yorn Sings the Classics (via Shelly Music). (Read my review of the album HERE.) The LP celebrates his musical influences, with a collection of songs originally performed and written by Bob Dylan, The Beach Boys, The Velvet Underground, The Stone Roses, Simon and Garfunkel and more. Buy/stream Pete Yorn Sings The Classics HERE.

Since his extraordinary 2001 debut album musicforthemorningafter, Yorn has released a total of eight albums of angsty, critically-acclaimed rock. In 2019, Yorn released Caretakers (via Shelly Music), his first solo album in three years featuring the top 2 AAA single “Calm Down”. The New Yorker Magazine praised the album’s “dreamy synths-and-strings jangle” and in All Music’s 4 star review, they described the music as “lush yet spare, tuneful but not forceful, cinematic yet small scale…an appealing blend that sets it apart from most other albums in 2019." Yorn performed songs from the album on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and Ellen.

In a recent Billboard magazine summary on the history of the AAA format, Pete Yorn was listed in the top 50 artists of all time based on airplay.
