New music: Deep Purple, Sparkle*Jets U.K., The Fabulous Thunderbirds

A trio of top-tier music makers are back with wonderful new albums.

Artist:
Deep Purple
Title: =1 (earMUSIC)
You might like if you enjoy: Deep Purple, Rainbow
Tell me more: Deep Purple's newly-released album =1 is at once a celebration of the British hard rocker's groundbreaking career and a band focused on the future. Indeed, the current lineup of singer Ian Gillan, bassist Roger Glover, drummer Ian Paice, keyboardist Don Airey and new guitarist Simon McBride collectively deliver potent performances across the 13-track Bob Ezrin-produced masterwork. Early standouts on the album include the taunt opener "Show Me," fiery "A Bit On The Side" and driving "Portable Door" (the latter featuring some dazzling lead guitar and organ work courtesy of McBride and Airey respectively). The bluesy "If I Were You" (showcasing Giillan's signature vocals), bewitching "Pictures of You," the sweeping rocker "Lazy Sod," lovely "I'll Catch You" and prog rock closer "Bleeding Obvious" entice on the last part of the album. The bonus DVD features the documentary "Access All Areas" allowing viewers to catch the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers backstage on tour and providing an exclusive look behind the scenes at the band. =1 is available now in a number of formats including a CD+DVD digipak (the version reviewed in this column), several limited edition 2LP vinyl versions, and a limited edition box set that includes CD+DVD, digital, 2LP black Gatefold, a collector's T-shirt, guitar picks and more! Information: ear-music.net.

Artist:
 Sparkle*Jets U.K.
Title: Box of Letters (Big Stir Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Brian Wilson, The Zombies, Pugwash, Fountains of Wayne
Tell me more: Sparkle*Jets U.K.'s Box of Letters is a euphoric listen, a disc that features Susan West (vocals, guitar), Michael Simmons (vocals, guitar, percussion) and Jamie Knight (bass) making a triumphant return on their first album of mostly original material in more than 20 years. After opening with an inspired cover of the Zombies' "This Will Be Our Year," Sparkle*Jets U.K. proceed to explore the far-flung corners of their sonic universe with a diverse mix of infectious songs ranging from the melodic rocker "Good Bye X 3" and aptly-titled Beach Boys-minded "I Can't Wait for Summer" to the harmonious alt rocker "Love Burn," dreamy "Little Circles," rollicking "Box of Letters" and jaunty closer "Hey Grandma." And just listen to the genre mash-up "Princess Needy," with its magical mix of chamber pop and disco stylings. The fact that West's punchy song craft and vocal approach works so well with Simmons' melodic and artful approach as as singer-songwriter brings an added dimension across Box of Letters. Simmons' rich and detailed production is the other key part of the bona fide success of the outstanding Box of Letters. Information: BigStirRecords.com

Artist:
 The Fabulous Thunderbirds
Title: Struck Down (Stony Plain Records)
You might like if you enjoy: The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Kim Wilson, Billy Gibbons
Tell me more: What do Bonnie Raitt, Elvin BishopTaj Mahal, Keb' Mo', Mick Fleetwood and ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons have in common? All appear on the Fabulous Thunderbirds' eagerly-awaited return Struck Down. With singer-songwriter/master harmonica master Kim Wilson at the helm, the band delivers 10 terrific tracks sure to please blues aficionados. Leading off with the aptly-titled mid tempo "Struck Down By The Blues" (featuring Canadian blues guitar player Steve Strongman) the album showcases a wonderful mix of material. The buoyant Cajun-mining "Don't Make No Sense" finds Wilson singing and playing his blues harp with zeal amidst a sonic backdrop highlighted by Terrance Simien's accordion work. The Texas-flavored blues rocker "Payback Time" is bolstered by Gibbons' signature guitar and vocals. Other standouts on Struck Down include the acoustic blues gem "Nothing In Rambling" (featuring Keb' Mo', Raitt, Mahal and Fleetwood), the driving and instantly infectious "Won't Give Up," fiery "Whatcha Do To Me" (the latter featuring Bishop on guitar) and spirited "That's Cold." Wilson turns in a particularly heartfelt vocal performance on the disc-ending ballad "Sideline." In addition to Wilson, the Fabulous Thunderbirds' lineup includes Bob Welsh (keyboards, guitar), Rudy Albin Petschauer (drums, percussion), Steven Kirsty (bass, saxophone) and Johnny Moeller (guitar). New music: Julie Christensen, Keb' Mo', Night Crickets, John Mellencamp

In this column I celebrate new releases from Julie Christensen, Keb' Mo', Night Crickets and John Mellencamp.

Artist:
Julie Christensen
Title: 11 From Kevin: Songs of Kevin Gordon (Wirebird Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Flesh Eaters, Divine Horsemen
Tell me more: The exceptional song writing of Nashville singer-songwriter Kevin Gordon is celebrated by Julie Christensen on her latest album 11 From Kevin: Songs of Kevin Gordon (released Jan 21). It speaks volumes about the power of Gordon's songcraft and Christensen's strengths as a recording artist that this is an album where diverse music styles somehow couldn't be more at home together. The loose rocker "Find My Way," the medley of the countrified "Heart's Not In It / Down To The Well," bluesy "Jimmy Reed Is The King of Rock n' Roll," gorgeous roots rocker "Gatling Gun" and lovely folk gem "Rest Your Head" collectively cast a welcome light on Gordon's pictorial lyrics while simultaneously showcasing Christensen's gifts as a singer. Co-produced by Christensen and Brett Ryan Stewart, 11 From Kevin: Songs of Kevin Gordon also rises via contributions from a field of great musicians; in particular Sergio Webb and Chris Tench add a myriad of diverse guitar sonics across the marvelous recording. Information: stonecupid.com.

Artist:
Keb' Mo'
Title: Good To Be (Rounder Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Keb' Mo', Darius Rucker, Bill Withers
Tell me more: Keb' Mo' is back with an album (Good To Be) that celebrates the richness of life with an optimistic and winning approach that reminds us not to let life's everyday moments pass us by. Indeed, the opening track "Good To Be (Home Again)" acknowledges "It's good to be here, good to be anywhere" and not later, "Good to be young, good to be old, good to be home again." Elsewhere on Good To Be the South Los Angeles native takes that same inspiring approach on the romance-minded "So Easy," social justice-aimed "Louder," heartfelt cover of Bill Withers' "Lean On Me" and luxurious life-affirming "Marvelous to Me." There are also several impressive collaborations here, including the lovely duet "Quiet Moments" (featuring soprano Kristin Chenoweth), Americana-styled "The Medicine Man" (with Old Crow Medicine Show) and tuneful "Good Strong Woman" (with Darius Rucker). Across the 13-track album   his first since his 2019 holiday set Moonlight, Mistletoe & You — Keb' Mo' utilizes his signature mix of blues, gospel and even pop to create songs that are as infectious as they are memorable. Information: KebMo.com.

Artist:
Night Crickets
Title: A Free Society (Omnivore Recordings)
You might like if you enjoy: Bauhaus, Love and Rockets, Violent Femmes, David Bowie
Tell me more: A trio comprised of David J (Bauhaus, Love and Rockets), Victor DeLorenzo (Violent Femmes) and Darwin Meiners, Night Crickets has released an impressive debut whose sonic moodscape fully captures the era of the pandemic. A Free Society features 13 originals that challenge and thrill the listener. The mix of sparse electronica, enticing rhythms, introspective lyrics and stylish grooves draws positive comparisons with a range of greats spanning from David Bowie to Gorillaz. Listening to this evocative album, I wondered if it could have been created any other way than musicians working remotely and sharing audio files from their far-flung locales. The dazzling opener "Black Leather on the Inside," retro "Amanda's Mantra," hypnotic "Roman A Clef" and "Soul Wave," lovely "Sloe Song," experimental "Down Below" and swirling "Sacred Monster" all enthrall. Information: OmnivoreRecordings.com.

Artist:
John Mellencamp
Title: Strictly A One-Eyed Jack (Republic Records)
You might like if you enjoy: John Mellencamp, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan
Tell me more: Singer-songwriter John Mellencamp has returned with his highly-anticipated 25th studio album Strictly A One-Eyed Jack, which finds the 70-year-old artist reflecting on his life with honesty and insight. Tracks such as "Always Lie To Strangers," "I Am A Man That Worries," "Chasing Rainbows" and "Gone So Soon" capture the spirit of the album's arc. All tracks on the disc are adorned with traditional Americana instrumentation that is a perfect counterpoint to Mellencamp's raspy baritone. Highlights include the lovely "Streets Of Galilee," genre-blending "Sweet Honey Brown" and driving "Lie To Me" along with several notable collaborations with Bruce Springsteen (the rootsy "Did You Say Such A Thing," affecting "A Life Full Of Rain" and poignant "Wasted Days"). Ana Popovic sets 20th Anniversary Tour plans

News about Ana Popovic's upcoming 20th Anniversary tour...

Ana Popovic announces first 60 appearances of her 20th Anniversary Tour confirmed for 2020 across the U.S. and Europe

Manhattan Beach, CA --- Ana Popovic has announced the initial sixty confirmed appearances she’ll make this year across The United States and Europe as she celebrates her 20th anniversary. There will be dozens of additional performances announced as they are confirmed in the coming weeks.  Popovic begins the run on February 19 in Atlanta, GA and wraps the leg on March 28 in Everett, WA.  She’ll then make European appearances from April 23 in to Early May.  A complete itinerary of shows now on-sale follows below.

This year marks the milestone 20th anniversary of Ana Popovic travelling the globe as a touring musician.  She shares, “It’s really hard to believe that twenty years ago, I gave up a career in graphic design, formed the Ana Popovic Band, and decided to be a full-time musician. Soon after, I traveled to Memphis to record my debut HUSH!  I had big dreams back then, and I still dream big today.  I can proudly look back at a career of thousands of shows over five continents. I’ve successfully merged musical styles and inspired a new generation of guitar players male and female to start pursuing their dreams, regardless of where they were born. Sometimes, the clichés about (music) business are right. If you work hard enough and want it bad enough, you can make anything happen.”

Festival in Dana Point, CA in May 2011.

Looking back at the beginning, Popovic reflects, “It feels like just yesterday, I started this project in a garage in Belgrade. Friends and family where supportive, a try-out show at a local bar became a steady gig, and through perseverance and hard work, here we are now. To celebrate the occasion, my six-piece band is walking down memory lane playing music of all of my albums. I’m excited to play older tunes I haven't played in a while, giving ‘fans of the first hour’ that sweet 'a-ha feel’. We’re also re-recording tunes on a special 20th-anniversary studio album – one track for every year.”  Additionally, there will be a live CD / DVD release in the coming months, captured in France late last year.

Despite having to juggle work with family, Popovic claims she has the best job in the world offering, “The feeling of freedom. The energy you get from a fantastic show. The people you meet during tours, the friendships built. And the best part - losing yourself in music. Performing with a fabulous band that musically connects to every move and every idea you bring to the stage, while sparking their own musical background to bring out the best in all of us.”

Today, you’ll find Popovic in a select group of excellent modern blues guitar players. One reason could be the fact that she’s always willing to work a little harder and travel a little further to hone her craft. That dedication has resulted in 12 albums, two DVDs, six nationwide Experience Hendrix tours, six Blues Music Awards nominations and sharing the stage with legends B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Gary Clark, Joe Bonamassa and many others.  Her latest studio album, Like It On Top, focuses on empowered, successful, inspiring female role models.  The release opened at #2 as the iTunes most downloaded US blues albums, as well as peaking at #2 on the Billboard Top Selling Blues albums chart.  Recorded in Nashville, TN and produced by four-time Grammy winner Keb’ Mo’, the blues influenced album features guest appearances from Kenny Wayne ShepherdRobben Ford and Keb’ Mo’.

Twenty years in to her professional career, Ana Popovic has travelled countless miles since she stepped forward from Belgrade, Serbia (ex-Yugoslavia).  After attending study at The Conservatory of Jazz and World Music in the Netherlands, she lived in Amsterdam for a decade.  With single-minded pursuit of her art and career, she then relocated to Memphis, TN to record and work with Southern musicians. Two years ago, she and her family relocated to Los Angeles, California where she now lives.

Called “one helluva a guitar-player” by Bruce Springsteen, and nominated for six Blues Music Awards, Ana has appeared on the covers of Vintage Guitar and Guitar Player magazine. Her albums Can You Stand The Heat and Unconditional were USA Today Picks-Of-The-Week and featured on NPR Weekend Edition, who praised her "Fiery technique on the Stratocaster". Nearly all of Ana's albums reached the top of the Billboard Blues Charts. She and her six-piece band have toured tirelessly, sharing stages with B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Jeff Beck, Joe Bonamassa and many others.

New Music: Tinsley Ellis, G. Love, Blue Öyster Cult,

Several of this writer's favorite blues and rock artists have returned with essential new listens. What's more, legendary rockers Blue Öyster Cult are back with a terrific new full-length concert release as well as a reissue featuring stellar versions of many of their best-known classics.

Artist: Tinsley Ellis
Title: Ice Cream In Hell (Alligator Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Freddie King, Eric Clapton, Albert King
Tell me more: Blues rock great Tinsley Ellis is as true triple threat, able to play electric guitar, sing and write songs with a master's touch. Thus, his latest studio collection Ice Cream In Hell cements the Atlanta, Georgia native's well-earned role as a leading member of the contemporary blues scene and one of the genre's greatest living proponents. Opening with the blistering Albert King-styled "Last One To Know," his heavy baritone voice delivers vocal lines amidst his own persuasive guitar lines, that musical dance culminating with a mighty solo that closes out the track. He explores other reaches of his Southern blues-minded universe, including via the frisky "Don't Know Beans," the B.B. King-mining title track and "Foolin' Yourself," and affecting "Your Love's Like Heroin" are among the scorching cuts on the disc. Across the 11-track album Ellis is firmly in command and further defines his signature style for all to hear. If you are in Southern California, make sure to catch Ellis on tour this winter; he has dates at The Canyon in Agoura Hills on Feb. 27, The Rose in Pasadena on March 5, and at The Coach House in San Juan Capistrano on March 8. Information: TinsleyEllis.com.

Artist: G. Love
Title: The Juice (Philadelphonic/Thirty Tigers)
You might like if you enjoy: Tommy Castro, Marcus King, Keb' Mo'
Tell me more: Singer-songwriter/multi-instrumentalist G. Love (aka Garrett Dutton) has released The Juice, a Keb' Mo'-produced LP featuring several high-profile guests who add authentic magic to the glorious proceedings. The album finds G. Love singing, delivering spoken word and fusing gospel vocals, blues guitar, funk, hip hop and more into a musical stew that thrills at every turn. The talented Marcus King guests on the cool title track, a Delta blues-meets-gospel gem with a bouncy flow. "Soul-B-Que" is a funky romp adorned by blues harp, G. Love's signature rapid-fire vocal approach and stylish work of guest pedal steel guitar player Roosevelt Collier. Keb' Mo' takes advantage of his collaborations as well, notably on the playful blues funk turn "Go Crazy." Keb' Mo' and pedal steel guitar great Robert Randolph both show up for "Birmingham," a driving folk rocker enhanced by the star power. Hawaiian artist Ron Artis II joins G. Love on the breezy "Diggin' Roots," an acoustic nugget with a sing-along chorus and good vibes in sync with the sound across The Juice. Information: ThirtyTigers.com.

Artist: Blossoms
Title: Foolish Loving Spaces (Virgin Int'l)
You might like if you enjoy: Keane, Phoenix
Tell me more: England's celebrated indie pop quintet Blossoms has a knack for tapping into tuneful, dance floor-ready impulses across their third full-length release Foolish Loving Spaces. There is a buoyant and enlivening spirit across this album's 10 triumphant songs. The soulful gospel-injected "The Keeper" is a particularly joyful listen, while the catchy "Real Life" and "Your Girlfriend" lyrically delve into the realities of life getting in the ways of youth-driven romantic infatuation. The sleek sounds of the immersive "My Swimming Brain," synth pop shine of "Romance, Eh?" and disco-tinged "Sunday Was a Friend of Mine" are among my other faves on a fantastic return. Information: www.blossomsband.co.uk.

Artist: Blue Öyster Cult
Titles: Cult Classic; Hard Rock Live Cleveland 2014 (Frontiers Music s.r.l.)
You might like if you enjoy: Blue Öyster Cult, Rush, Asia
Tell me more: In early December 2019 I caught Blue Öyster Cult as the groundbreaking rock troupe delivered a powerful and inspired concert at The Coach House in San Juan Capistrano. The quintet's much-deserved reputation as a must-see live act is certifed via two newly-released collections out now. Cult Classic is the 12th studio album from the New York-spawned band. Originally issued in 1994, the 14-track disc features updated recordings of BOC's biggest hits including the enthralling "Don't Fear The Reaper," infectious "Burning For You" and undeniably fun "Godzilla." Beyond the band's timeless hits is a palpable pull that casts a welcome appreciation of the bona fide talents of the group; the psychedelic-tinged heavy rockers ""This Ain't The Summer of Love" and "Flaming Telepaths" are bolstered by lush harmonies. Elsewhere the blues-rocker "O.D.'D On Life Itself," literate prog rocker "Astronomy" and heavy metal rocker "Cities On Flame With Rock 'N' Roll" convincingly captivate. And everywhere across the collection listeners are treated to killer guitar work from Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser (just listen to the dazzling instrumental "Buck's Boogie"). The reissue comes remastered and with updated artwork.

Hard Rock Live Cleveland 2014 is a stellar two-hour concert recording available in several fan-friendly formats including 2CD + DVD, vinyl, and Blu-ray (this writer was provided the digital audio stream for review). BOC explodes out of the gate with "O.D.'D On Life Itself," the first of 17 selections that collectively embrace the troupe's parade of hits as well as far-flung cuts that capture BOC's diverse forays into blues, hard rock, progressive rock and experimental veins. "The Red and the Black" is one of those great tracks that is dizzying, somehow combining Celtic, classic rock and guitar-centered rock (including tandem fret play from Roeser and Richie Castellano); a six-minute take on "Golden Age of Leather" is launched with lush a cappella vocals and weaves its way through distinctive sections (including riff rock, progressive, and Byrds-like vocal harmonies) all perfect in their relation to the others. While the potent versions of the band's radio hits is a surefire draw, the inviting takes on the sumptuous 9-minute gem "Shooting Shark," bewitching "The Vigil," lovely "I Love The Night" and rollicking "ME 262" are among the other sonic attractions that make "Hard Rock Live Cleveland 2014" a welcome addition to any rock lover's library. The 10-minute-plus masterwork "Then Came The Last Days of May" is another standout track on the title, enhanced by a nuanced arrangement and fiery musicianship that builds to an explosive crowd-pleasing finale. In addition to Roeser (lead guitar, lead vocals) and Castellano (keyboards, lead guitar, backing vocals), the lineup includes Eric Bloom (lead vocals, rhythm guitar, keyboards), Jules Radino (drums) and Kasim Sulton (bass guitar, backing vocals). Holiday Music Aplenty Via Blues, Rock and Broadway Icons

Whether your preference is the blues, Broadway or rock, there are wonderful new holiday music releases out now that truly celebrate the musical spirit of the season.

Artist: Keb' Mo'
Title: Moonlight, Mistletoe & You (Concord Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Keb' Mo', blues, Christmas music
Tell me more: It is little surprise how masterfully blues great Keb' Mo' has approached Christmas on his first-ever holiday album. Moonlight, Mistletoe & You is as original and delightful as any new Christmas-minded collection issued this year with the bluesman offering up artful takes on well-known standards that shine while also using his signature wit on a number of original songs. Take the humorous "Christmas is Annoying," where lyrical rhymes are used to turn tradition on its ear: "I remember caroling and skating down the hill / skating on the pond, you know, it really was a thrill / but now the thrill is gone and all my credit cards are maxed / I'm running here, running there, with no time to relax." His version of Koko Taylor's "Merry Merry Christmas" comes via a cool Chicago blues-meets-rock vibe and is one of those great tracks that would be welcome anytime of the year. Keb' Mo' can also delve into the more traditional sonics of the holiday as evidenced by his original lovely jazz-swept gem "One More Year With You" and the joyful mix of acoustic blues and children's' voices on "When the Children Sing." He also casts a welcome fresh coat of musical paint on the standard "Please Come Home For Christmas," a soulful blues number that benefits from a poignant arrangement and Keb' Mo's resonant baritone delivery. Melissa Manchester joins the celebration for a duet on Irving Berlin's wonderful "I've Got My Love to Keep You Warm," a lovely and timeless jazz arrangement. Information: kebmo.com.

Artists: Jon Davison, Steve Morse, John Wetton, Geoff Downes, more
Title: A Prog Rock Christmas (Cleopatra Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Yes, Asia, Curved Air, Utopia
Tell me more: Those who enjoy Christmas music as well as fans of classic and progressive rock will love A Prog Rock Christmas. Featuring a top-tier lineup of genre notables, the collection finds Yes singer Jon Davison kicking things off with a melodic and moving reading of the Chris Squire and Alan White penned "Run With The Fox." Kasim Sulton's lush "Christmas Lights," guitar master Steve Morse's dazzling take on "Carol Of The Bells" and Billy Sherwood and Patrick Moraz's colorful reading of Paul McCartney's "Wonderful Christmastime" are early standouts on the 13-track set. A Celtic-styled "Fairytale of New York" featuring Leslie Hunt and Robin McAuley, otherworldly "O Come All Ye Faithful" from Curved Air lead singer Sonja Kristina, Yes keyboardist Geoff Downes' instrumental "Linus & Lucy" and the late Asia singer-bassist John Wetton's affecting cover of John Lennon's "Happy Christmas (War is Over)" are among my favorites on the closing run of the holiday title. A Prog Rock Christmas is available on audio CD via digipak as well on limited edition vinyl in either red or white. Information: CleopatraRecords.com.

Artist: Idina Menzel
Title: Christmas: A Season of Love (Decca Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Kristin Chenoweth, Ariane Grande, Billy Porter
Tell me more: Armed with her signature soprano and the world's most beloved holiday songbook, Tony award-winning singer Idina Menzel's Christmas: A Season of Love is sure to please those who appreciate traditional-styled takes on the season. There are wonderful duets here: Menzel is joined by her husband Aaron Lohr for a tender "I'll Be Home For Christmas" while fellow-Broadway star Billy Porter teams up with her for the swinging "I Got My Love To Keep Me Warm." She is joined by Ariana Grande for the jazzy "A Hand For Mrs. Claus." Menzel's vocal power is real as evidenced by her nuanced "Caroling, Caroling," and a glorious medley featuring "O Holy Night" that artfully segues into "Ave Maria" and then back to "O Holy Night." One of the most powerful songs on the disc is "At This Table," a piano-anchored song co-written by Menzel and Jonas Myran. The lyrics focus on a theme of inclusion and togetherness during the holidays, an especially-powerful message at a time when there is so much global strife: "At this table, everyone's welcome," she sings. "At this table, everybody cares. At this table, everybody matters. So come pull out a chair." She also performs an uptempo version of "Ocho Kandelikas" ("Eight Little Candles"), a song sung in Ladino that celebrates the holiday of Hanukkah. Information: IdinaMenzel.com.

Artist: Bryan Adams
Title: Christmas EP (Ume)
You might like if you enjoy: Bryan Adams
Tell me more: Bryan Adams' fast-moving Christmas EP features five inviting songs, all of which will bring smiles in tune with the holiday season. Several of the selections are new to long-time fans of the Canadian rocker; the Chuck Berry-flavored original "Joe and Mary" and joyful sing-along "Must Be Santa" are recent recordings (an interesting side note: "Must Be Santa" was previously covered by Bob Dylan). A trio of previously-heard Adams holiday recordings have been remastered (the anthemic "Christmas Time," catchy "Reggae Christmas" and retro-adorned "Merry Christmas"). Tell me more: A gifted actress, multi-instrumentalist and singer, Charleene Closshey taps into the spirit of classic and contemporary yuletide favorites on her magnificent Christmas Time Is Here. The orchestral arrangements are rich and prove to be a luxurious fit with Closshey's wonderful soprano. The Broadway-flavored "I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day," sumptuous "God Rest Ye Merry, Gentleman," opulent Celtic-mining "Good King Wenceslas" and gentle "Ave Maria" are among the fantastic selections here. Her reflective approach to singing "O Holy Night" is a revelation; for the first half of the song she is accompanied only by piano and when the orchestra and choir come in later they do with restrained perfection. The wistful version of the title track (anchored by piano and jazz guitar) is another highlight on the 10-track album. Produced by six-time Grammy winner Brent Maher, Christmas Time is Here is available digitally on music streaming platforms, and physically via Amazon and CDBaby. Hits The Road with New Concept Album That Focuses on Empowered, Successful, Inspiring Female Role Models Who Want It and Can Do It All

Ana Popovic, the blues and rock guitarist and singer who is one of the world's most respected players, will release Like It On Top, a concept album in which she explores ten different aspects of women's empowerment on ten new songs. Just off a series of major European festivals, Popovic is on the road for a 35-date US tour (see dates below).

Recorded in Nashville, Tenn., and produced by four-time Grammy winner Keb' Mo', the blues influenced album features guest appearances from Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Robben Ford and Keb' Mo,' and will be released worldwide Sept. 14.

"Being on top" is about achieving your own potential. Succeeding in juggling work, family, social life, expectations of the others, of the society, while pushing limits. Renewing yourself and inspiring others."

Like It On Top celebrates those women who take initiative, develop, inspire and motivate. It's about feeling good about yourself and what you do." Its ten songs cover topics that are partly autobiographical and partly broader statements aimed at every women -- desire and fantasy, feeling empowered about your craft, confronting dominant macho male attitudes, escaping an abusive marriage, and how to have a strong man as your partner.

But it also credits the men who are motivated and enlightened enough to support women in their quest to be their best versions of themselves. The first single, "Like It On Top," emphasizes that behind every strong, successful woman stands the man that understands the importance of having women be leaders in society. And the final track, the gentle "Honey I'm Home," gives a shout-out to an ever-growing number of families in which men give up their careers to support a woman's career.

"I hope that my music inspires others to motivate ladies all over the world to be successful, energetic, empowered women on a mission, and to motivate men to give them that chance," Popovic says. "The majority of women need to work harder than men to prove themselves or need to cope with a feeling of constant pressure to never make a mistake and be perfect. I believe that women no longer only have the right to earn a living and to take care of themselves and their families."

Ana Popovic has been moving West all her life. She fell in love with American blues as a kid, starting back home in Belgrade, Serbia (ex-Yugoslavia) during the fall of Communism, then moved to the Netherlands to study at the conservatory of jazz and world-music. She lived in Amsterdam for over ten years, and then in a single-minded pursuit of her art and career, she relocated to Memphis, TN to record and work with Southern musicians. Finally, two years ago, she moved her family to Los Angeles, California where she now lives.

"The time has come to step it up," Popovic says. "Becoming the outstanding leaders of tomorrow. Corner-office ladies in business, politics, and the electric guitar!"

Ana has recorded nine studio album and been nominated for six Blues Music Awards, and has appeared on the covers of Vintage Guitar and Guitar Player magazines. Her albums Can You Stand The Heat and Unconditional were USA Today Picks-Of-The-Week and featured on NPR Weekend Edition, who praised her "Fiery technique on the [Stratocaster] .

Nearly all of Ana's albums reached the top of the Billboard Blues Charts. She and her six-piece band have toured tirelessly, sharing stages with B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Jeff Beck, Joe Bonamassa and many others.
