In this column I showcase four fantastic new audio titles available now.

Title: Long Long Road (Ringo Starr)

Tell me more: Beloved singer-songwriter/drummer Ringo Starr is back with yet another wonderful studio album, the aptly titled Long Long Road. The 10-track Nashville-mining album features a slew of musical heavyweights who add their talents to bolster the T Bone Burnett-produced LP. Indeed, Sheryl Crow, Sarah Jarosz, Molly Tuttle, St. Vincent and Billy Strings are among the notables featured on Starr's 22nd solo album; the original songs on the disc were co-written by Starr alongside Burnett as well as with Daniel Tashian and Bruce Sugar. Early highlights on the album abound; the breezy Appalachia-tinged "Returning Without Tears" finds Starr's signature vocals a perfect fit with harmony vocals courtesy of Tuttle's lovely soprano (she also plays acoustic guitar on the track). The breezy "Baby Don't Go" (the latter featuring some flashy acoustic guitar work from Strings), the driving "It's Been Too Long" with Starr's masterful drumming front and center (his outstanding lead vocals blend perfectly with backing vocals provided by Tuttle and Jarosz), and the buoyant gem "Why," the latter featuring stellar acoustic guitar work from both Tuttle and Strings are fantastic. The last half of Long Long Road continues to cast its magic via the shimmering "You and I (Wave of Love)," lovely "My Baby Don't Want Nothing" and Beatlesque "Choose Love." Bringing it all home is the pedal-string swept title track that finds a grateful Starr looking back at his incredible life and how — no matter the challenge — he continues to live each day with purpose, love and strength. This truly unique album features Vito's all-instrumental selections played exclusively on slide guitar. Standouts on the dozen-track collection include the fiery opener "Vegas Jump," emotive slow Chicago blues-flavored "Steal Away," the moody '60s-mining "The Danger Zone," and "Soul Shadows," sumptuous reading of Peter Green's "Albatross," a nuanced version of Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come" and ambitious original "River Of Blues." Tell me more: Released on April 24, Wormstew's debut album The Last Days Of Loma is loaded with originals that are artful, melodic, intelligent and never less than alluring. Mike Schnee (lead vocals, guitars, keyboards, percussion), Teresa Cowles (bass, vocals, keyboards) and Michael Simmons (drums, vocals, electric guitar, keyboards and more) are a formidable trio, conjuring up past masters while bravely crafting a sonic palette all their own. The melodious jazz-tinged opener "Spinning," tuneful "Sheriff Brody" (a literate look back at the protagonist from the classic movie "Jaws"), shining harmonies sortie "Letters On The Wall," delightfully driving Americana nugget "Movin' Along" and haunting "J.P. McCartney" are among my early faves on the 14-track disc. The exuberant bluegrass gem "Assholes," wistful "Irony At Its Finest," melancholy-filled Kinks-flavored "When Cats Are Sad," soaring "When Our Worlds Collide" and sophisticated "Another Stupid Song" thrill on Side 2 of the masterwork. Tell me more: Deep Purple's newly-released album =1 is at once a celebration of the British hard rocker's groundbreaking career and a band focused on the future. Indeed, the current lineup of singer Ian Gillan, bassist Roger Glover, drummer Ian Paice, keyboardist Don Airey and new guitarist Simon McBride collectively deliver potent performances across the 13-track Bob Ezrin-produced masterwork. Early standouts on the album include the taunt opener "Show Me," fiery "A Bit On The Side" and driving "Portable Door" (the latter featuring some dazzling lead guitar and organ work courtesy of McBride and Airey respectively). The bluesy "If I Were You" (showcasing Giillan's signature vocals), bewitching "Pictures of You," the sweeping rocker "Lazy Sod," lovely "I'll Catch You" and prog rock closer "Bleeding Obvious" entice on the last part of the album. Tell me more: Sparkle*Jets U.K.'s Box of Letters is a euphoric listen, a disc that features Susan West (vocals, guitar), Michael Simmons (vocals, guitar, percussion) and Jamie Knight (bass) making a triumphant return on their first album of mostly original material in more than 20 years. After opening with an inspired cover of the Zombies' "This Will Be Our Year," Sparkle*Jets U.K. proceed to explore the far-flung corners of their sonic universe with a diverse mix of infectious songs ranging from the melodic rocker "Good Bye X 3" and aptly-titled Beach Boys-minded "I Can't Wait for Summer" to the harmonious alt rocker "Love Burn," dreamy "Little Circles," rollicking "Box of Letters" and jaunty closer "Hey Grandma." And just listen to the genre mash-up "Princess Needy," with its magical mix of chamber pop and disco stylings. The fact that West's punchy song craft and vocal approach works so well with Simmons' melodic and artful approach as as singer-songwriter brings an added dimension across Box of Letters. Tell me more: What do Bonnie Raitt, Elvin Bishop, Taj Mahal, Keb' Mo', Mick Fleetwood and ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons have in common? All appear on the Fabulous Thunderbirds' eagerly-awaited return Struck Down. With singer-songwriter/master harmonica master Kim Wilson at the helm, the band delivers 10 terrific tracks sure to please blues aficionados. Leading off with the aptly-titled mid tempo "Struck Down By The Blues" (featuring Canadian blues guitar player Steve Strongman) the album showcases a wonderful mix of material. The buoyant Cajun-mining "Don't Make No Sense" finds Wilson singing and playing his blues harp with zeal amidst a sonic backdrop highlighted by Terrance Simien's accordion work. The Texas-flavored blues rocker "Payback Time" is bolstered by Gibbons' signature guitar and vocals. Other standouts on Struck Down include the acoustic blues gem "Nothing In Rambling" (featuring Keb' Mo', Raitt, Mahal and Fleetwood), the driving and instantly infectious "Won't Give Up," fiery "Whatcha Do To Me" (the latter featuring Bishop on guitar) and spirited "That's Cold." Wilson turns in a particularly heartfelt vocal performance on the disc-ending ballad "Sideline." In addition to Wilson, the Fabulous Thunderbirds' lineup includes Bob Welsh (keyboards, guitar), Rudy Albin Petschauer (drums, percussion), Steven Kirsty (bass, saxophone) and Johnny Moeller (guitar). Tell me more: Leave it to founding Doors guitarist-songwriter Robby Krieger to continue to explore new corners of the musical universe with a masterful touch. The Robby Krieger and The Soul Savages' wonderful debut The Players Club was recorded at Krieger's own Love Street Studios in Glendale, California, with the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer joining forces with a bunch of good friends to track the disc. The album opens with "Shark Skin Suit," a decidedly funky track where Krieger's freewheeling slide guitar work fuses a winning mix of jazz, blues and even sitar-mining stylings that enhance the bewitching foray. Instrumental music lovers will love the diverse and far-flung influences that are artfully blended across the disc. Standouts include the psychedelic-flavored "Samosas & Kingfishers," the grooving funk sortie "Day In L.A.," adventurous jazz track "Killzon," the bouncy jazz cut "Ricochet Rabbit" (the latter featuring Krieger playing impressive octave jazz lines inspired by the late Wes Montgomery), and the ambitious genre-mashing closer "Math Problem." Among the top-tier musicians who perform on the album are bassist Kevin "Brandon" Brandon, keyboardist Ed Roth, and drummer Franklin Vanderbilt. Tell me more: The Incurables' new album Inside Out & Backwards (set for release Jan. 19 courtesy of Big Stir Records) celebrates the Detroit-based garage-pop-punk rock quartet with a set of 10 irresistible rockers that delight on first listen. "When I Grow Up," the sweeping "Far Away" and heavy "Someday" explode out of the gate, showcasing the outfit's dynamic songwriting, rousing approach and solid chops. "Soda Pop" is an all out infectious and fun track. More nuanced, "Man Of Few Words" showcases a dynamic drums and bass-powered rhythm, layered guitars and evocative vocals. "When You" is a driving power pop original bolstered by strong '60s-minded lead vocals and harmonies positioned amidst exuberant instrumentation. The Incurables revisit old school punk on the aptly-pegged "Go Away." The album closes with the wonderful "I Told Myself (Absolutely Nothing)," which is a perfect fusion of melodic rock and punk stylings that morphs into a wonderful detour for a surprising a cappella finale. Title: The Denny Laine EP (Record label)

Tell me more: Despite being a co-founding member of both the Moody Blues and Paul McCartney's Wings, English singer-songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Denny Laine had a 60-year career that often flew under the radar. In the wake of his tragic death from a rare form of lung disease on Dec. 5, 2023, Southern California-based power pop heroes Popdudes recorded the aptly-titled tribute The Denny Laine EP available now that goes a long way to shine a welcome light on Laine's legacy. The five-track EP is a marvelous celebration of Laine's craft, as well as the terrific talents of Popdudes (drummer John Borack and singer/multi-instrumentalist Michael Simmons), with the selections focusing on Laine's time with Wings (1971 to 1981). The range of material on the EP is truly a delight with several guests' notable contributions elevating the collection. Things kick off with the reflective "No Words," showcasing Simmons' wonderful vocals and Borack's nuanced drumming. "Spirits of Ancient Egypt" captures the otherworldly melodic flourish of the 1975 original version, with Stephen Alva providing lead vocals on the Popdudes' take. The lovely McCartney-penned "The Note You Never Wrote" captures the exuberance of the version included on Wings at the Speed of Sound that featured Laine on lead vocals; Addison Love contributes flashy guitar work on the cut. The bouncy "Again and Again and Again" finds Love on lead vocals, with the version fully capturing the melodic and lyrical strengths of the 1979 classic featured on Wings' final studio album. The soaring "Time to Hide" — a song Laine wrote and often sang in concert with Wings — is bolstered by explosive choruses and Alva's harmonica work wrapped in a truly marvelous arrangement. Information: https://michaelsimmons.bandcamp.com/album/the-denny-laine-ep.

Tell me more: For many years I wrote an award-winning column titled "Orange Pop" for The Orange County Register where I had the thrill of covering that region's explosive music scene. Many of the artists — notably No Doubt, Sugar Ray, Walter Trout and Lit — went on to global success after making a splash locally. However, many of my favorite artists achieved only cult status despite their incredible talent. It's great to see Turn-of-the-Century power pop trio Sparkle*Jets U.K. return with a fantastic new album (Best of Friends, available June 30) — the band's first new studio LP in more than 20 years. The aptly-titled Best of Friends finds Michael Simmons (lead and backing vocals, guitar, keyboards, drums), Susan West (lead and backing vocals) and Jamie Knight (bass, 12-string guitar) offers their distinctive sonic stamp on 21 gems originally recorded by Southern California-based artists who were their contemporaries. The album opens with a wistful take on Walter Clevenger's "Hold On Tight" before the band turns on a dime to deliver a glorious take on The Masticators' "He's Coming Out." A Baroque pop reading of Kompost's "One Summer Sunday," luxurious cover of Cockeyed Ghost's "Ludlow 6:18," a buoyant version of Candypants' "I Want a Pony" and rollicking run through The Dons' "Till We Meet Again" are among my other faves on the first half of the terrific title. The momentum and caliber of the collection never falters; sumptuous versions of The Shazam's "Sunshine Tonight," Linus of Hollywood's "Good Sounds," Wondermints' "In and Around Greg Lake," Kenny Howes and the Yeah!'s "Right Idea," The Negro Problem's "Mahnsanto" and The See Saw's "Probleme Romantique" on the last half of the set have me pretty sure that Sparkle*Jets U.K.'s Best of Friends will land on my favorite albums of 2023 list. Tell me more: Released on May 26, Dirty Water Revisited marks the high profile return of founding Standells' guitarist Tony Valentino. Along with singer-keyboardist Larry Tamblyn, bassist Jody Rich and drummer Benny King, Valentino was a key player in the Los Angeles-spawned quartet's groundbreaking garage rock sound showcased in their timeless 1966 hit "Dirty Water." On his return Valentino — as well as vocalist/drummer Duane Waider, keyboardist Zero E and bassist-guitarist/vocalist Gary Kaluza — revisits a handful of the enduring gems recorded by the Standells including a rousing take on the aforementioned "Dirty Water," rhythm guitar-anchored "Sometimes Good Guys Don't Wear White" (the latter bolstered by Valentino's harmonica playing), the electrifying "Barracuda" and rollicking "Try It." The Valentino-produced album also hits high marks thanks to the surf-meets-soul rocker "There Is a Storm Comin'," the blistering hardcore tribute "I'm a Sexy Punk Rocker" (the latter a nod to the Standells' influence on punk rock), infectious "Vicki" and psychedelic "Love Me." Title: Live at the Bottom Line (Omnivore Recordings)

You might like if you enjoy: Jefferson Airplane, Hot Tuna, acoustic blues

Tell me more: Recorded live on Aug. 23, 2003, the new title Live at the Bottom Line is a fantastic concert recorded featuring legendary singer-guitarist Jorma Kaukonen (Jefferson Airplane, Hot Tuna) accompanied by Barry Mitterhoff (mandolin, octave mandolin, tenor guitar, tenor banjo) and Cindy Cashdollar (steel guitar). Captured not long after the release of his 2002 Grammy-nominated album Blue Country Heart, this is truly a flawless mix of Americana, country, blues and folk music performed by a trio of virtuoso musicians. The buoyant "Blue Railroad Train" (which includes terrific mandolin playing from Mitterhoff), countrified Jimmie Rodgers nugget "Waiting for a Train," his beautiful original "Do Not Go Gentle" (written for Kaukonen's father) and luxurious instrumental "Living in the Moment" are standouts on disc one. Disc two features an ambitious 11+ minute version of the traditional spiritual "Good Shepherd," an uplifting country blues cover of Reverend Gary Davis' "I Am the Light of This World" and masterful arrangement of the traditional "Hesitation Blues." Two decades after this magical performance was staged at New York's Bottom Line music venue, it's great that a wider audience gets to hear the magic again. Information: OmnivoreRecordings.com.

Tell me more: Fans of melodic '60s-mining rock will want to get a listen to the wonderful this then are The Mosquitos! The Mosquitos' story is almost as compelling as the band's music; in the mid-1980s the rising outfit called it quits on the brink of stardom (indeed, the band was named Best New Rock Group at the New York Music Awards in 1986). Now fast forward to 2023 and The Mosquitos' infectious style blending songwriting elements spanning from the 1950s and 1960s to the 1980s can be heard by all. Standouts abound on the 47-track double CD that collects many of the Mosquitos' best studio and live recordings, with shining vocal harmonies a key part of what makes the outfit's sound so special. As noted in press notes released in connection with the collection: "Since the band only recorded a third of their original songs in the studio, the rest are represented in a live setting. Much care was taken to find the best versions, and some you'll swear are studio recordings." 

"Let's Stomp" is a hyper successful mix of 1950s rockabilly and Devo-like minimalist rock that connects with a single listen. "You Don't Give a Hang (About Me)" is fully original, with layers of shimmering guitars and immersive vocals. "Darn Well," "Quit It" and "I'm So Ashamed" are rousing garage rockers; "Wrong Side of Town" and "I'll Just Hide" conjure up the bona fide excitement of the British Invasion. The band's melodic power pop nugget "That Was Then, This Is Now" (a cover of that Mosquitos original was a comeback hit for the Monkees in 1986), sumptuous "I Know a Secret," propulsive "Standing In the Rain," tender "Stephanie Says" and affecting "Christmas Dream" are other wonderful songs on the essential collection. Catch Up With These 2018 Gems

While 2019 has arrived, I wanted to celebrate a handful of outstanding 2018 albums that caught my ear over the past few weeks...

Title: Laughing Up Your Sleeve (Omnivore Recordings)
You might like if you enjoy: The Band, David Gilmour, Gram Parsons
Tell me more: With the explosion of the Americana music movement in recent years it's not surprising that roots music lovers might want to dig a bit deeper and rediscover the genre's founding heroes. Count the British group Unicorn and the new title Laughing Up Your Sleeve as great place to catch up on one critical player in the Americana movement. Unicorn's "Laughing Up Your Sleeve" includes 20 previously-unissued demos from 1973-74 that were produced and recorded by David Gilmour (Pink Floyd) in his home studio. The harmonies, melodies and musical feel draw strong comparisons with contemporaries ranging from America to Gram Parsons and Neil Young on the LP. The remastered and restored analog tapes have revealed a fantastic sound on the new disc; highlights on the collection include the Parsons-flavored "Take It Easy," ethereal "All Night Long," aching ballad "Just Wanna Hold You" and wistful "Blue Pine Trees." Tell me more:  The luxurious soundscape crafted across Darlingside's Extralife is as immersive and gorgeous as any disc in memory. Boston-based quartet Darlingside uses a Americana backdrop that is propelled into the sonic stratosphere via lush harmony-drenched songs that will move discerning listeners to tears; the album's overarching theme of the world's end enhances the LP's surefire impact to be sure. The expansive "Singularity," acoustic chamber pop gem "Hold Your Head Up High," electronica "Eschaton" and enthralling "Indian Orchard Road" are among the stellar cuts on one of 2018's best albums. Title: Thoughts On Lunch? (Big Stir Records)

Tell me more: Armed with a terrific tenor voice, multi-instrumentalist/songwriter Addison Love has knocked it out of the sonic park on his official full-length debut Thoughts On Lunch? The Orange County-based artist impresses in the delivery of piano-anchored forays (the Paul Williams-flavored "Just One Minute," introspective "Be Strong"), propulsive melodic pop (the prog rock-tinged "Anything's Right" and buoyant "Wee & Nancy Lee"), psychedelic rock ("Other Angels"), baroque rock ("I Hope She Stays Around") and a retro-aimed Music hall tune ("The Ballad of Dr. Minard"). "She" is an especially poignant original, recalling the acoustic approach used by John Lennnon on the Beatles classic "Julia." Written, performed, engineered and produced by Addison Love, Thoughts On Lunch? is a wonderful debut from start to finish. Title: Go Back To Your Wife (Sage West Music)
You might like if you enjoy: Paula Cole, Mother Hen, Harry Nilsson
Tell me more: A noted studio musician who appeared on recordings featuring John Lennon, Ringo Starr, the Bee Gees, Jimi Hendrix and Harry Nilsson, songstress-keyboardist Jane Getz returned last year with the release Go Back To Your Wife. The disc is filled with original songs featuring her signature vocals, top-tier keyboards and a knack for '70s-flavored pop craft. The range of songs here is impressive, from the country-pop of "Love Should Be Easy" and wry Americana tale "In the Wilds of Alaska" to the shimmering ballad "Treasure Island" and blues-mining "Gonna Get What You Prayed For" displaying the artist's unique sound. You might like if you enjoy: Hans Zimmer, Rupert Gregson-Williams
Tell me more: With a thoughtful blend of instrumental music courtesy of composers Rupert Gregson-Williams and Joseph Bishara as well as two contemporary songs, Aquaman (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) is one of the year's best soundtracks. Whether it was because of the artistic power of the story and inspiration of the film's stunning locations, or primary composer Gregson-Williams' connection with the compelling superhero origin tale, the new soundtrack is an intoxicating mix of symphonic-draped romanticism and dynamic electronica that delights across its length. The sweeping "Arthur," propulsive "Kingdom of Atlantis," gorgeous "The Legend of Atlan" and romantic "Reunited" are among the dazzling tracks on the soundtrack penned by Gregson-Williams. Listening to the songs on the disc, Skylar Grey's poignant "Everything I Need" is particularly stirring; the relevant "Ocean To Ocean" from Pitbull and Rhea effectively addresses Arthur Curry's character arc with apt lyrics and weaves a dose of Toto's 1982 classic "Africa" into the sonic moodscape. The speedy "Tom Cattin'," graceful "The Neosho Waltz," buoyant "Steel Guitar Rag" and Scottish-flavored "March Of The McGregor" showcase Brumley's virtuoso-meets-artful approach to playing his instrument. Many leaders of the contemporary power pop genre are featured on this title that captures the diversity of Williams' song craft genius. The dreamy "Fill Your Heart" from songstress Andrea Perry, melodic rocker "Special to Me" (a choice song in the 1974 rock flick "Phantom of the Paradise") performed by The New Empire, the baroque pop ballad "Let Me Be The One" interpreted by Michael Simmons and lush "An Old Fashioned Love Song" from Cait Brennan are among the stellar cuts on this affecting tribute. The Popdudes (featuring Sparkle*Jets U.K. front man Michael Simmons and the aforementioned Borack) unleash rip roarin' takes on material ranging from a ferocious tear through a mini-medley of Cheap Trick's "Hello There" and "Top of the World" and sweet reading of Paul McCartney and Wings' "With A Little Luck" to a shimmering cover of ABBA's "Waterloo" and equally-rousing turn with the Turtles' 1968 hit "Elenore." Tell me more: Anyone wanting to discover the roots of the Coachella festival should check out the involving new documentary US Festival: 1982 The US Generation. The marvelous new documentary blends interview and performance footage from the 1982 US Festival, which was an extraordinary event staged in Southern California that was created by Apple visionary Steve Wozniak. The event featured a truly eclectic lineup of popular musicians ranging from classic rock greats to groundbreaking punk and '80s alternative acts. There are a myriad of unforgettable performances. While this writer's favorite performances are The Police's fiery "Can't Stand Losing You," The Cars' "Bye Bye Love" and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' blistering "Refugee," full-length performances of Fleetwood Mac's "The Chain" and Santana's "Black Magic Woman" also make for essential viewing of the film. There are insightful interviews with Wozniak as well as all the other key names who put on the event and many of the musicians who performed across the three-day event. Tell me more: When acclaimed composer James Horner died in plane crash in the Los Padres National Forest in June 2015, he left behind an enduring legacy courtesy of a number of memorable movie soundtracks he composed across four decades. Now in honor of what would have been his 65th birthday (Horner was born Aug. 14, 1953), a number of top-tier musicians have recorded some of Horner's most beloved movie themes on the newly-released James Horner – The Classics. The Celtic-flavored "My Heart Will Go On" from his "Titanic" score is revisited via 2CELLOS, who take full advantage of the cello's emotionally-rich tones. Just as stunning is cello master Tina Guo, who reimagines the intimate theme from "Cocoon." Horner could also rise to the occasion with rousing symphonic grandeur, as evidenced in trumpeter David Elton's terrific take on "The Wrath of Khan" (the score for "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan in 1982 elevated Horner to one of Hollywood's A-list composers). Another sci-fi film, 2009's "Avatar," was one of Horner's most ambitious efforts (he reportedly worked on the score for two years) and is represented via the symphonic "I See You" (featuring Tina Guo). Other highlights on the disc include "Field of Dreams" (featuring guitarist Craig Ogden) and "The Ludlows" (with violinist Lindsey Stirling performing the evocative theme from "Legends of the Fall"). Tell me more: The newly-released Michael Simmons album First Days of Summer captures the spirit of summertime even while creating a sweeping soundscape that means this album will sound great anytime. The lyrics are sharp while the musical chops enhance the enticing melodies; there is just a great positive vibe and freewheeling spirit across the dozen-track run. Simmons' wide-ranging explorations yield a strong crop of great originals and no two sound alike. The soulful "Do Your Best to Care" and explosive "Get Back What You Put In" kick off the full-length album. "No More Girls" is an intoxicating romp that could have been recorded by hitmakers in the '60s; the crunchy pop of "Let's Fall In Love" is one of my favorites on the disc with its mix of Matthew Sweet melodic rock and smart Ric Ocasek styling. "Rudderless Day" is a similarly winning rocker. The lush title track somehow revisits classic Beach Boys territory while sounding completely original. The wonderful baroque-meets-psychedelic "Centre of the Spiral" is a tender and mature look inside a relationship as the best moments of a couple's journey together have passed. Simmons handles most lead vocals and the majority of musical duties on the album with a masterful touch; a few notable guests crop up here and there (including guitarist Robbie Rist, cellist Matthew Carney and lead guitarist Addison Love). Title: Into The Badlands: Season 2 (Varèse Sarabande Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Hans Zimmer, Trevor Yuile
Tell me more: "Into The Badlands: Season 2" features some incredible music composed by Trevor Yuile featured on the AMC original series. Yuile, a Canadian composer perhaps best known for creating the score for the TV series "Orphan Black," delivers a vast range of moods and sonic shades; the tense orchestrations of "Sunny Dream" and "Wedding," the gorgeous "This Is Henry Veil Dies," along with the ambitious "Sunny Vs Moon" (with its blend of Far East and Native American moodscapes) and "Tilda Widow Fight" are among this writer's favorites on the title. In addition to Yuile's powerful and wide-ranging score that is showcased across the 26-track release, there are several notable cuts offered up by other artists. The quick "Into The Badlands Theme" (performed by Warrior Blade), edgy R&B cut "Human" (performed by Rag'n'Bone Man), evocative "The Love I Have For You" (via Alberta Hunter) and festive "Jingle Bells" (courtesy of The Light Crust Doughboys) blend well with Yuile's instrumental magic. Tell me more: Only 15, Sevi Ettinger is definitely ready for the spotlight. On her newly-issued EP Salty Water, the young songstress showcases a knack for commercial songcraft while also revealing she has plenty to say. Her lead track "Salty Water," recorded via an app on her phone, is a plea for understanding and compassion for the refugee children dealing with a relentless war in Syria: "Those kids out there/ die everyday" she sings at one point, while the vivid chorus finds the songstress emphasizing "Why can't we just be the people we are? Why can't we just be the people we want to be? / It's unfair, I feel like I am falling in the ocean, tasting the salty water." Ettinger has a rich and luring soprano, and the four songs on the EP suggest she has a bona fide pulse on the contemporary music scene. The wistful "Live" and EDM-tinged pop gem "Don't Fall Behind" are also standouts on the disc (produced by Grammy Award-winning Jeff Bova along with Phillip Jarrell and Ettinger). Tell me more: Long-time fans of Mississippi-spawned rockers 3 Doors Down will find plenty to savor via the riff rockers and ballads that grace the band's satisfying sixth album Us and the Night. Singer Brad Arnold and company have consistently been able to blend hard and alternative rock styles with lyrics that typically address the highs and lows of romance, or introspective themes; the band does that here on their first new full-length disc since 2011's "Time of My Life." The spirited anthem "The Broken," in-the-pocket heavy rocker "Still Alive" and affecting ballads "Inside of Me" and "Pieces of Me" are among the standouts on a very solid return. Tell me more: Few modern-day artists are as talented as singer-songwriter-guitarist Joe Bonamassa, who was seemingly born to play guitar (indeed, the New York native began playing the instrument when he was four and was only 12 when he opened a string of dates for B.B. King in 1989). Bonamassa is also prolific, having just released his 12th studio album (Blues Of Desperation) since 2000. And that doesn't include a number of live albums and concert films, and several high-profile collaborations with the likes of singer Beth Hart and Black Country Communion. It speaks volumes about Bonamassa's gifts that Blues of Desperation has the sound and firepower of a hungry bluesman's debut. The 11 original songs tap into British, Chicago and Southern blues traditions, with Bonamassa having worked with other songwriters and recorded in Nashville to push his talents in new directions. The fiery and virtuoso guitar work thankfully remains intact (notably on an extended lead in "No Good Place for the Lonely"), but there are forays that provide evidence that Bonamassa remains a hungry artist interested in exploring new territory. The glorious English-meets-Southern-fried title track, breezy country blues of "The Valley Runs Low" (with his voice positioned against a trio of female vocalists) and uptempo Chicago blues burner "You Left Me Nothin' but the Bill and the Blues" are among this writer's faves. Tell me more: Released in connection with what would have been singer-guitarist-songwriter Jeff Healey's 50th birthday, Heal My Soul features a dozen previously-unreleased songs recorded by the legendary artist between 1996 and 1998. The opening track "Daze Of The Night" is a flat-out blues rockers, filled with soaring guitar work and unbridled energy.
