Alex Chilton's 'Live In London: Encore Edition' coming November 25, 2022

Big news for fans of the late great Alex Chilton (of Big Star fame). A forthcoming release will feature live recordings from 1980 featuring Chilton...Robert Kinsler

Alex Chilton’s Live In London: Encore Edition Out November 25 on Sundazed Music

Features Previously Unreleased Songs From 1980 London Shows

Available on 2-LP or CD; Pre-order Now Available

Sundazed Music announces the November 25 release of Alex Chilton’s Live in London: Encore Edition. Available on 2-LP or CD, the album is now available for pre-order.

Featuring unheard songs from his 1980 London dates, the live performance set marks the first time anyone beyond the hardy handful in attendance on the first night of his U.K. solo shows at Dingwalls will get an earful of Chilton’s distorted stock of Memphis psychobilly at its best. The package also includes new liner notes from Jim Allen, who chats with key players from the two-day pajama party.

With eight previously unreleased songs on LP (nine on CD) and pressed on colored vinyl, the Encore Edition of Live in London includes 14 songs from the original Live in London album, which were culled from the second night when Chilton and his new British buddies had fully gelled. The bonus tracks offer an extended peek into Chilton’s arcane bag of cover tunes. A complete tracklisting is below.

Chilton had recorded The Seeds’ “Can’t Seem to Make You Mine,” Troy Shondell’s 1961 rocker “Girl After Girl,” and The Kinks’ “Come on Now” all summarily savaged with a gusto that goes even beyond the brutalism of postmodern prankster he accorded them earlier. Plus, the band lends a feral bite to Big Star power-pop evergreens adding furry layers of feedback and existential yearning in equal amounts.

All of it presented a greasy, ground-level picture of where Chilton’s heart resided at the time, delivered with an earnest derangement roughly akin to Captain Beefheart’s early funhouse mirror distortions of the blues. Chilton may have arrived in his pajamas, but he came to rock.  Live in London: Encore Edition confirms that his mission was accomplished.

100 YEARS OF BLUES
is front-porch, down-home music with Elvin Bishop and Charlie Musselwhite trading licks and vocals on 12 rootsy, spirited songs, mixing nine originals with three reimagined classics. The album was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Traditional Blues Album. Although Bishop and Musselwhite have known each other since the early 1960s and recorded as guests with John Lee Hooker (and other friends), this is the first time that they ever teamed up to make a full record. According to Musselwhite, “This is us sitting down to play the music that we love and resonating together effortlessly because we’re 'coming from the same place.’” On June 3, 2022, Charlie Musselwhite released his new Alligator Records album, Mississippi Son.

The idea for the album came about in 2017 when the two musicians laid down the original version of the song 100 Years Of Blues for Bishop’s Big Fun Trio album. They realized then that they had a special musical chemistry between them. In 2019, Bishop and Musselwhite played a series of stripped-down shows – along with their mutual friend, pianist/guitarist Bob Welsh – swapping songs and telling stories. The audiences went wild, and Elvin and Charlie had so much fun they knew they had to capture the magic in the studio.

The album was recorded at Kid Andersen’s Greaseland Studios and Bishop’s Hog Heaven Studios in northern California. It was produced by Andersen and co-produced by Bishop, Musselwhite and Welsh. The laid-back, spontaneous nature of 100 YEARS OF BLUES highlights the heartfelt passion of each performance. Throughout the album, the interplay of guitar, vocals, harmonica and piano is virtually telepathic.

Bishop and Musselwhite have continued touring with their own bands and creating critically acclaimed, award-winning music, so this special performance featuring these two icons of the blues is not to be missed.

SEPTEMBER 26, 2022 (London, UK) -- BLUR drummer DAVE ROWNTREE is excited to announce details of his debut album, RADIO SONGS which will be released on January 20, 2023 via Cooking Vinyl. Its announcement coincides with the release of a new single, "Devil's Island," his second from the debut record, and its opener too. The album was produced by Leo Abrahams (Brian Eno, Wild Beasts, Ghostpoet).

Dave Rowntree on "Devil’s Island"
"I grew up in the UK in the 1970s and while there were definitely good points about the decade, I also remember how toxic it could be. The country was deeply divided, and racism and misogyny were the norm. The economy was a basket case, and at one point we had to be bailed out by the IMF [International Monetary Fund]. However, listening to some people, you'd think it was a golden age to which we should yearn to return. This song is a note to self, to remind me how far we've come in forty years."

New Music: Dr. John, Rhett Miller, Doug "Cosmo" Clifford with Bobby Whitlock, Nikki Lane

A remarkable finale, an unearthed lost treasure and several new studio releases make for great listens.

Artist:
Dr. John
Title: Things Happen That Way (Rounder Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Dr. John, Leon Russell, Willie Nelson
Tell me more: At once a genre-defying artist and the very sonic definition of New Orleans' timeless sound, Malcolm "Mac" Rebenack, Jr.  better known as Dr. John — had long spoke about wanting to record a county and western album to pay homage to the songwriters and music makers whose songs had touched him. Rebennack was in the midst of realizing that dream when a heart attack tragically ended his life on June 6, 2019. The Grammy-winning Rock & Roll Hall of Famer who had masterfully fused soul, R&B, funk, rock and blues since the 1950s was only 77.  The good news is that the resulting posthumous masterwork Things Happen That Way (released via Rounder Records on Sept. 23) showcase those final recordings and fully celebrate Dr. John's groundbreaking six-decade-long recording career. The range of material stretches from a wistful take showcasing his distinctive vocals and piano playing on Willie Nelson's "Funny How Time Slips Away," an urgent reading of Hank Williams' 1951 classic "Ramblin' Man" and a playful take on the Traveling Wilburys' "End of the Line" (the latter bolstered by Aaron Neville's vocals) to his own co-writes with famed guitarist Shane Theriot ("Holy Water," "Sleeping Dogs Best Left Alone," "Give Myself a Good Talkin' To"). Willie Nelson joins Dr. John on a R&B-flavored take of the traditional "Gimme That Old Time Religion." The album's closing title track (written by Jack Henderson Clement) is poignant, elevated by Dr. John's rich baritone and sparse piano work. Currently available on audio CD and digitally, Things Happen That Way will be released on vinyl on Oct. 14. Information: Rounder.com.

Artist:
Rhett Miller
Title: The Misfit (ATO Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Old 97's, Wilco, John Lennon, Tom Petty
Tell me more: A notable departure from his work with Dallas, Texas' alt-country favorites Old 97's and previous solo work, singer-songwriter Rhett Miller's ninth solo album The Misfit is a rich hybrid of psychedelic pop, indie folk rock and cosmic dream-pop bound by probing songcraft. The confessional "Follow You Home," evocative psychedelic rocker "Heart Attack Days," rootsy ballad "Already There," shimmering "Just When It Gets Good," luxurious "Fascination," reflective "The White Tops" and ardent piano-anchored "Let Me Go There With You" are among the great cuts that find Miller at the top of his game. Information: RhettMiller.com.

Artists:
Doug "Cosmo" Clifford with Bobby Whitlock
Title: California Gold (Cliffsong Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Doug "Cosmo" Clifford, Bobby Whitlock, Derek and the Dominos, Deep Purple's "Burn"
Tell me more: Who knew that following the breakup of Creedence Clearwater Revival and Derek & The Dominos, a principal member from each of those illustrious troupes would join forces to write and record a killer full-length album that was never released  until September 2022. CCR drummer Doug "Cosmo" Clifford and Derek & the Dominos singer-keyboardist Bobby Whitlock were joined by bassists Donald "Duck" Dunn and Tom Miller, as well as guitarists David Vega and Mike O'Neill on the previously-unissued California Gold. Recorded at the infamous Cosmos Factory and other area Bay Area studios, the 12-track disc will definitely appeal to fans of classic '70s blues rock outfits such as Humble Pie,  Grand Funk Railroad and the Doobie Brothers. The terrific track listing includes the aptly-titled "Good Times," bluesy "Get Down Fever," soul music mining "It's Always Darkest Before The Dawn," hard-edged "Do Or Die" and soaring "I'm Happy Just Being Alive." My favorite original on the album is the driving "Purple Mountain," an enticing six-minute rocker bolstered by sublime lead guitar work, deft drumming from Clifford along with Whitlock's signature lead vocals and keyboard playing. Information: DougCosmoClifford.com.

Artist:
Nikki Lane
Title: Denim & Diamonds (New West Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Loretta Lynn, Kasey Chambers, Nikki Lane
Tell me more: In the wake of the arrival of the global pandemic a parade of talented artists have issued probing and powerful albums that reflect a singular moment in time when the world was seemingly stopped in its tracks. Add Nikki Lane's name to that list of musical greats issuing a standout album over the past year or so. Denim & Diamonds is a wonderful leap forward for the Nashville-based songstress, with a blend of roots rock, Americana and alt-country showcased across the 10-track disc. The album was completed at a unique point just after the last days of Lane's extended tour in support of her 2017 album Highway Queen and after the beginning of the lockdown forcing everyone indoor. Lane enlisted famed Queens of the Stone Age leader Joshua Homme to help bring her vision to life. The melodic "First High" with its undeniable chorus, haunting alt-country ballad "Faded," rousing roots rocker "Born Tough" and defiant "Try Harder" are among the early standouts on the wonderful album. The tender "Live/Love," lusty "Black Widow" and haunting closer "Chimayo" continue the album's firm reach in its last half. Information: NikkiLane.com.

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers 'Live at the Fillmore' coming November 25

A truly exciting Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers release is coming in November...Robert Kinsler

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers: 'Live at the Fillmore 1997' is coming November 25; the collection revisits the troupe's 20-show residency at the famed San Francisco venue

The long-awaited Live at the Fillmore (1997)Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers’ first live album in 13 years—is due November 25 on Warner RecordsThe album will be available in various formats, see below for details and click HERE to pre-order. To celebrate, the track “Listen To Her Heart” is premiering now alongside a video directed by Peter Sluszka; watch HERE.
Before starting the 20-show run at the Fillmore, Tom Petty outlined his plans in an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle
“We’re musicians and we want to play. We’ve made so many records in the past five years, I think the best thing for us to do is just go out and play and it will lead us to our next place, wherever that may be.”
The shows at the Fillmore ended up being some of the most joyful, honest, inspirational and prolific experiences of the band’s career, creating a unique bond between the group and their fans. This album features more covers than originals, paying tribute to the artists and songs that shaped Petty’s love of music as he was growing up—before he became a legendary songwriter and performer in his own right. Highlights include Bob Dylan’s “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door,” J.J. Cale’s “Crazy Mama,” The Rolling Stones’ “Time is On My Side” and more from The Kinks, Everly Brothers, Bill Withers, The Byrds, Chuck Berry and Booker T. & the M.G.’s. The collection also features special performances with The Byrds’ front man Roger McGuinn and blues legend John Lee Hooker. Other standouts include extended versions of original tracks “Mary Jane’s Last Dance” and “It’s Good To Be King.”
“Playing the Fillmore in 1997 for a month was one of my favorite experiences as a musician in my whole life. The band was on fire and we changed the set list every night. The room and the crowd was spiritual... AND... we got to play with some amazing guests. I will always remember those nights with joy and inspiration.”—Mike Campbell
The Fillmore was a laboratory for the band. The captivating sold out performances were such a hit, the Heartbreakers were even nicknamed the “Fillmore House Band.” At the final show, Petty noted as he took the stage:
“We all feel this might be the highpoint of our time together as a group… It’s going to be hard to get us off this stage tonight.”
The record will be offered in a 3 LP version simulating one of the concerts and a comprehensive box set featuring 58 songs and 14 humorous spoken word tracks that highlight Petty’s connection with his band and his fans from the stage. The shows were taped during the last six nights of the band’s historic residency. The compilation was meticulously curated by producers Ryan Ulyate and Mike Campbell and executive producers Benmont TenchAdria PettyAnnakim Petty and Dana Petty.

Tom Petty Radio (channel 31) on SiriusXM premiered the album announcement and new song earlier today, along with exclusive interviews with Heartbreakers Mike CampbellBenmont TenchSteve Ferrone, and Scott Thurston.
