For Zac Brown Band, the opportunity to perform at the Forest Hills Stadium in New York - where The Beatles, Bob Dylan, The Who, and many other legendary artists performed in the 1960s and 1970s - was a special experience. "It's always intriguing to be in New York," Zac Brown said. "It's exciting to be part of the heritage of what actually went down here."

The Alabama Shakes' performance in a barn attached to Nashville's iconic Loveless Café was a first for the critically acclaimed young band. "We've never played in a barn before," frontwoman Brittany Howard said in an interview that will be included in the band's episode. "It's nice to play somewhere like this, because it's got a little more character and a little more flavor than some sort of new venue."

Live from the Artists Den is a production of Artists Den Entertainment, presented by WLIW LLC in association with WNET, and is distributed nationally by American Public Television. The series is filmed in 1080 high-definition and audio is recorded using Apogee's custom Symphony I/O 64 channel multi-track system for extraordinary sound fidelity.

SEASON 9 EPISODES

Zac Brown Band
at the Forest Hills Stadium in Queens, NY

The GRAMMY Award-winning Zac Brown Band brings music back to the historic Forest Hills Stadium in Queens, NY, with a hit-filled performance under the stars. Incorporating a mix of country, bluegrass, reggae, Southern rock, and jam music into its performance, the set includes such fan favorites as "Jump Right In," "Colder Weather," "Free," and "Day For The Dead" from the 2013 EP, The Grohl Sessions Vol. 1.

Alabama Shakes at the Loveless Barn in Nashville, TN

Alabama Shakes deliver a crushingly electric set at the rustic-chic Loveless Barn behind Nashville's famous Loveless Cafe. Beneath white lights strung from the rafters, the six-piece band dash through blistering rockabilly boogies and eruptive country-soul ballads from both their 2012 debut album, Boys & Girls, and the collection of new material earmarked for the band's much-anticipated follow-up.

Cage the Elephant at the Santa Barbara Art Foundry in Santa Barbara, CA

Cage the Elephant bring their soulfully psychedelic sound to the Santa Barbara Art Foundry. Thriving off the energy of the crowd, the band tears though a set drawn mostly from their current album Melophobia - which just received a Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Album - before ending the night with a shirtless Matt Shultz held aloft by the cheering crowd, a triumphant exclamation point to an unforgettable performance.

Damien Rice at the Greenpoint Loft in Brooklyn, NY

Irish singer-songwriter Damien Rice delivers an unforgettable performance at the Greenpoint Loft, a 19th-century warehouse on the Brooklyn waterfront. Concentrating largely on material from his acclaimed new album My Favorite Faded Fantasy - Rice's first in eight years - the heartrending set was performed solo before Rice thrilled fans with a full backing choir on his uplifting new song "Trusty and True."

Inbox Update: Amos Lee, Being There, 'Sounds Like Bobby Sutliff' tribute

There are a growing number of notable releases (both DVDs and albums) set to arrive this winter. I've posted some of the highlights of recent announcements here...

On March 12, 2013, Artists Den Records and EMI Music in conjunction with Blue Note Records will release Amos Lee: Live from the Artists Denon DVD. A live album of music from this concert will also be available for download on January 9th exclusively at bit.ly/WIxCh6. This epic show was filmed during a special, intimate performance at the historic Fox Theatre in Tucson, Arizona.  Selections from the show aired nationwide on public television’s Live from the Artists Den, the hit music series featuring acclaimed artists performing in extraordinary settings.

Now released in full for the first time, the DVD features bonus interview clips and concert footage not included in the television broadcast, including guest appearances by local heroes Calexico (who also appeared on Lee’s most recent album Mission Bell, which was also produced by the band’s Joey Burns) and the Silver Thread Trio and a stunning rendition of Willie Nelson and Ray Charles’ “Seven Spanish Angels.”

Amos Lee: Live from the Artists Den is the seventh concert DVD release from Artists Den Entertainment, following Robert Plant & the Band of Joy: Live from the Artists Den, which debuted in the Top 5 of the Billboard Music DVD charts. This product is available for pre-order at the Artists Den store (bit.ly/UUFkr1) and Amazon (amzn.to/TGUT5w).

Since the release of the Amos Lee album in 2005, the Philadelphia-born and -based former schoolteacher has been one of his generation’s most celebrated songwriters. After being named one of Rolling Stone’s “Top 10 Artists to Watch,” Lee quickly went on to tour with such giants as Bob Dylan, Merle Haggard, Paul Simon, and Elvis Costello. His next two albums—Supply and Demand (2006) and Last Days at the Lodge (2008)—continued to extend his audience and his reputation, and he’s gone on to collaborate with everyone from Willie Nelson and Norah Jones to Lucinda Williams and
Zac Brown. 2011’s Mission Bell was a dramatic leap forward for Lee, debuting at
#1 on the Billboard Top 200 and garnering the best reviews of his career.

The performance captured in Amos Lee: Live from the Artists Den was filmed at the
Fox Theatre, which opened in 1930 as Tucson’s premier venue for vaudeville and film. Shuttered and left to decay for 26 years, the newly renovated Fox reopened its doors
on New Years Eve in 2005. On a sweltering night in the desert, Amos Lee made a triumphant return to Tucson, the city where he recorded Mission Bell. The subsequent concert ranged from solo showcases to arrangements for a dozen musicians and featured highlights from Lee’s latest album, as well as some of the finest songs from
his catalogue.
“It’s just an incredible opportunity to be in these kinds of venues,” Amos Lee says in the interview included in the film. “There’s so much history in these rooms – not only for the music, but just for the life that’s passed through them ... All of these things kind of factor in to that moment you step on stage.”

Being There
Breaking Away
Young & Lost Club
29 January 2013
BEING THERE TO RELEASE DEBUT ALBUM, “BREAKING AWAY,” IN U.S. ON JANUARY 29

London based indie alt-rockers Being There will release their debut album, Breaking Away, on January 29 in the U.S. via Young & Lost Club.  The band recently released videos for their tracks ‘The Radio’ and ‘Back to the Future,’ which can be seen at the links below.

‘The Radio’ - http://youtu.be/5UWOknj2_m0
‘Back to the Future’ - http://youtu.be/KS40j6PfgCc

Formed towards the end of 2010 after meeting at university in Manchester, the now London based band Being There started working with label Young & Lost Club from the offset, after vocalist and guitarist Sammy Lewis previously worked with the label as a solo performer. Joined by James Robinson (bass & vocals), Tom Rapanakis (drums) and Nick Olorenshaw (lead guitar) Being There spent 2011 on the road with Noah & The Whale, releasing their debut single, recording their debut album and rounding the year off as one of NME’s ones to watch for 2012.

Being There spent much of 2012 on the road with a brief stint in the studio to record Breaking Away onto tape during a two-week stay in Leeds with producer Richard Formby (Wild Beasts, Spectrals).

With a strong coming of age theme, Breaking Away is inspired by a nostalgia for teen years that feel full of possibility, but are also, as Sammy says, a time that’s “tinged with a sense of limitation, feeling trapped in the suburbs waiting to grow up or just waiting for something to happen”.  The band are conscious that it also relates to the current environment where “so many people we know are experiencing an extended adolescence, where you are a graduate but can’t find a job and are stuck at home again dreaming of escape”.

Opening track ‘Punch the Clock’ sees Breaking Away begin as it means to go on; awash in wave after wave of syrupy Jesus and Mary Chain-style guitars and sweetly understated vocals telling of a car drive through London. It eventually burns out leaving gently ringing drones that morph into the propulsive ‘Back to the Future’; a song loaded with escapist imagery (and a Randy Newman reference). Upcoming single ‘Tomorrow’ is where Breaking Away really kicks into full throttle however; it’s a hyperactive hit for the summer buoyed by the best fuzz guitar hooks this side of Dinosaur Jr.

Breaking Away‘s appeal isn’t just limited to its hard-hitters though. The delicate and reflective ‘To Infinity And Beyond’ shows a lighter side of the band, with clear nods to acts such as The Lemonheads and Herman Dune. It’s a sound they go on to develop further on the straight up pop songs and singles ‘17’ and ‘The Radio,’ which both perfectly demonstrate the band’s ability to write hugely catchy, lo-fi indie pop songs for the 21st century.

Breaking Away will be released in the U.S. through the Young & Lost Club label on January 29.

Skrang CD to Benefit Windbreaker Bobby Sutliff featuring Velvet Crush (w/Matthew Sweet), Don Dixon, and members of the dB’s, Wilco, Rain Parade, Long Ryders & More
Record Release Party/Benefit Set for January 19th at the Earl in Atlanta featuring Rain Parade (First Show in Two Decades!), Tim Lee 3 & The Head

Power pop fans know Bobby Sutliff, dating back to the Windbreakers’ 1982 EP Meet The Windbreakers and extending to the present. Bobby’s facility at turning both ecstasy and heartbreak into tangible artifacts of comfort, and at soundtracking those emotions as personal cinema, is as profound as it comes. His songs have affected and enriched in so many ways, so it came as no surprise that when news of his near-fatal automobile accident last year reached the music community, the response was swift and succinct: time to give back to the artist.

Fellow Windbreaker Tim Lee sprang into action, accepting help from the cream of the crop in the power pop world to create a Bobby Sutliff tribute album Skrang, featuring Peter Holsapple (the dB’s), Tim Lee 3 (natch), Don Dixon, Velvet Crush (w/Matthew Sweet, no less), Matt Piucci of the Rain Parade, Bill Lloyd, Donovan’s Brain, Will Kimbrough, John Stirratt of Wilco, Russ Tolman from True West, the Long Ryders’ Tom Stevens—and a slew of other Sutliff compatriots and associates.

Rain Parade stepped up to perform together for the first time in 20 years, they’ll share the stage at The Earlon January 19th with Tim Lee 3 and The Head. As RP frontman Matt Piucci succinctly noted, “Our friend is badly hurt. We were asked to help. Here we come.”

Blurt editor Fred Mills compiled his thoughts for the album, articulating the importance of Sutliff and the context in which his music resonates. He wrote, “Patti Smith once told this writer that the artist’s role goes far beyond simply reflecting and commenting upon cultural events and trends. “Artists offer us a shoulder to lean on, an empathy,” she said. “Artists let us know that we’re not alone and that someone understands what we’re going through.”

I think of Smith’s comments now while listening to the tunes on Skrang, the Bobby Sutliff tribute album organized by his close friend (and erstwhile partner in Southern pop legends The Windbreakers) Tim Lee. Was there ever such a sensitive, penetrating—and yes, empathetic—song as Sutliff’s “That Stupid Idea,” originally on the Windbreakers’ classic LP from 1985, Terminal? Or “New Red Shoes” (also from Terminal), “I Thought You Knew” (At Home With Bobby & Tim, 1989) and “The Girl From Washington” (Electric Landlady, 1990)? Or solo Sutliff tracks like “Long Red Bottle of Wine” (2002’s Perfect Dream) and “Second Choice” (1987’s Only Ghosts Remain)?

These and numerous other Sutliff tunes have long resonated with me, for those very reasons and more—okay, I’m a sucker for a jangly guitar, an urgent-yet-tuneful vocal and a shimmering melody—and to hear them revisited and reinterpreted so delightfully by a talented cadre of Sutliff’s pals, peers and bandmates only reaffirms in my mind the man’s songwriting genius.

It’s all a labor of love, and with far more musical substance and emotional wallop than 99% of contemporary tribute albums, which typically bear the fingerprints of managers and labels looking more to pad their clients’ resumes than pay homage or discern aesthetic truths. In the final estimation, these musicians know, love and have worked with Bobby, and upon hearing the call, they stepped up to the plate.”

Sights and Sounds: The Replacements, First Aid Kit, 'Live From the Artists Den'

This fall promises to provide a wealth of noteworthy releases. From Micky Dolenz' Remember and the Freddie Mercury documentary The Great Pretender (which are both set to arrive this Tuesday, Sept. 25), there is a wide range of new DVD/Blu-ray and album releases set to hit between now and the end of 2012, as well as music specials coming to television. Here are several high-profile releases that landed in my inbox late last week...

The Replacements 'Color Me Obsessed' comes to DVD on November 20, 2012

COLOR ME OBSESSED, the first documentary about famed 80's indie-rock band The Replacementswill be released in a two-disc DVD set (with 6 hours of extras) on November 20, 2012 via MVD Entertainment Group.

Told through the eyes of fans, friends, and contemporaries, COLOR ME OBSESSED breaks from the traditional music documentary format of music and performances. Not looking to make a VH1/where-are-they-now style documentary, director Gorman Bechard took a unique approach, "I decided to present the band in a more iconic way," he explains. "I thought, people believe in God without seeing or hearing him but rather through the passion, faith, and stories of others. After watching COLOR ME OBSESSED, I'm pretty sure music fans will believe in The Replacements in much the same way."

Telling the band's story was a project close to the heart for Bechard. Like many who were weaned on punk music he latched onto this brash young Minneapolis band with fervor. Dubbed "the last best band" by Spin Magazine, their live shows could be miraculous or downright disasters. Their fans, unwaveringly faithful. As critic's darlings, their albums were wrought with angry guitars and passionate well-written lyrics that hinted at potential commercial success. Yet, somehow, the band managed to continually shoot themselves in the foot. Their relative obscurity was a motivating factor in presenting their story on film. "The Replacements should have been the next Rolling Stones," Bechard says, "And to the people who loved them, I think they were."

Combining over 140 interviews with rockers (Colin Meloy of The Decemberists, Craig Finn of The Hold Steady, Tommy Ramone, Grant Hart and Greg Norton of Husker Du, all three members of Goo Goo Dolls), journalists (Robert Christgau, Legs McNeil, Ira Robbins, Greg Kot, Jim DeRogatis), and fans both famous (Tom Arnold, Dave Foley, George Wendt) and not, Bechard delivers the obsessive tale of the most influential band you've never heard of, The Replacements. And though containing not one note of their music, COLOR ME OBSESSED is a documentary that really rocks.

Bechard is also releasing his Archers of Loaf reunion tour/concert documentary WHAT DID YOU EXPECT? on November 20. The film features the Indie rock icons playing two hometown concerts at Cat's Cradle in Chapel Hill, NC. It premiered at NXNE in Toronto in June.

FIRST AID KIT: "WOLF" VIDEO PREMIERE ON VEVO

SINGLE & EXCLUSIVE ITUNES SESSION NOW AVAILABLE

LIMITED EDITION DELUXE PACKAGE OF ACCLAIMED ALBUM
THE LION'S ROAR COMING OCTOBER 2ND

NORTH AMERICAN FALL TOUR BEGINS SEPTEMBER 24, 2012
First Aid Kit premiered their dreamlike, kaleidoscopic new video for single "Wolf" today on Vevo. Shot in the forest of Järvsö, Hälsingland in Sweden, the Johan Söderberg-directed video can be seen here: http://youtu.be/Czj7SyPNRto. "It's about our destruction of the planet," said the band. "But it's also about finding the animal within you. Because we know that underneath that polished, civilized exterior there is definitely a wild creature longing to howl or roar." "Wolf" is also now available as a single via all major digital retailers, including iTunes and Amazon.

Last week, First Aid Kit's exclusive iTunes Session arrived on the iTunes store and features Swedish sisters Klara and Johanna Söderberg augmented by a full string section for the first time. The session is comprised of slightly restyled arrangements of four songs found on their acclaimed sophomore LP The Lion's Roar; one each from debut album The Big Black and the Blue and their Drunken Trees EP"Wolf"; and their celebrated cover of Patti Smith's "Dancing Barefoot", never before recorded. The Lion's Roar producer Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes, Monsters Of Folk) performs on all tracks, while Conor Oberst reprises his guest verse on "King of the World."

First Aid Kit's North American fall tour - their biggest to date - begins on September 24 in Chicago, IL, and continues through October 20 in Seattle, WA, and includes an October 12 performance at the Austin City Limits Festival. A limited edition, deluxe package of The Lion's Roar will be available on October 2, which features additional tracks as well as a DVD of live on-the-road documentary Follow You Down and music videos for three The Lion's Roar tracks, among other items. A full itinerary is below.

First Aid Kit continue to have an amazing 2012, performing earlier this month to a packed crowd from the main stage at the UK's Bestival fest (watch them play "Emmylou" here: http://youtu.be/PHkVWDaGkUs). Late last month, they performed Simon & Garfunkel's "America" at the Polar Music Prize ceremony to a standing ovation from Paul Simon himself (http://youtu.be/pa3xOakbGTo). The Lion's Roar was released on January 17th via Wichita Recordings and has already sold over 150,000 copies worldwide (over 50,000 in the US alone), while the band made their US television debut on Conan in April and performed at the Coachella, Newport Folk, and Lollapalooza festivals this year as well.
