“It’s th[e] tonal juxtaposition that places Palomino among First Aid Kit’s best work. Not only are they diversifying their stylistic pallet, but by doing so, they’ve hit upon a new form of emotional songwriting.” – Consequence

“On their fifth album, Palomino, they strike melodic gold once more with some of their most uplifting and pop-centric songs to date… there’s plenty to admire in terms of the Söderberg’s unerring ability to craft beautiful celestial harmonies and conjure a sense of the mystical and magical out of the ether.” – Under The Radar (8/10)

“Klara and Johanna Soderberg’s fifth full-length album: once heard, wild horses won’t drag you away.” – Mojo (****)

“Klara and Johanna Soderberg dazzle on their first record in nearly five years.” – Dork (****)

Today, First Aid Kit has released their fifth studio album Palomino via Columbia Records. Listen HERE. Arriving alongside the album is a stunning new video for title track “Palomino,” which was filmed at Studio Rydman where First Aid Kit recorded the LP. Watch HERE.

Written and recorded in their home country of Sweden, Palomino finds Klara and Johanna Söderberg turning to music with a sense of optimism as an escape from the dark times of the past few years and coming into their own as individuals, sisters, and a band. The 11-track LP was produced by Daniel Bengtson and features seven brand new songs as well as lead single “Out of My Head,” “A Feeling That Never Came,” “Turning Onto You,” and “Angel.” See full tracklisting below.

In speaking about Palomino, First Aid Kit says: “Here it is. Our fifth album Palomino. Straight from our hearts to yours. We are immensely proud of this record and we had such a joyous experience making it. To us, it symbolizes freedom and moving forward. Like the imagery of the Palomino riding off into the unknown, we hope these songs will give you inspiration and solace wherever they find you.”

About First Aid Kit:
Uplifted by the familial creative harmony of sisters Klara and Johanna Söderberg, First Aid Kit delicately thread together eloquent folk, breezy Americana, and pensive pop. After amassing over 1 billion streams and counting, the two-time BRIT Award-nominated Swedish duo’s blend of artful songcraft and ambitious melodies continues to fixate audiences worldwide. Following The Big Black and The Blue [2010] and The Lion’s Roar [2012], the group reached critical mass with 2014’s Stay Gold. The lead single “My Silver Lining” gathered hundreds of millions of streams and picked up a gold certification in the UK. In 2018, Ruins went gold in Sweden and earned “4-out-of-5 stars” from The GuardianQ, and NME, while Pitchfork applauded it as “a showcase for their sweet harmonies, with some bold stylistic departures.” In the wake of the latter, they scored a second nomination at the BRIT Awards in the category of “Brit Award for International Group.

Along the way, they collaborated with everyone from Jenny Lewis and Conor Oberst to George Ezra and Zara Larsson. Beyond dozens of film and television syncs a la The Umbrella Academy, the girls voiced characters in the English and Swedish versions of NETFLIX’s Centaurworld. Not to mention, they’ve delivered stunning performances on Jimmy Kimmel LIVE! and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. First Aid Kit take flight like never before on their 2022 fifth full-length, Palomino. Produced by Daniel Bengtson and crafted in Sweden, it leans into vibrant and vital pop hooks with their signature intuition and emotional acuity on display as introduced through the single “Out of My Head.”

New Titles: Lynyrd Skynyrd, Allen Ginsberg, First Aid Kit, the Armoires, Godzilla vs. Kong (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

A truly dizzying mix of new releases are greeting listeners in early April, ranging from classic live recordings and dynamic new studio albums to a wonderful new movie soundtrack.

Artist:
Lynyrd Skynyrd
Title: Live At Knebworth ‘76 (Eagle Rock Entertainment)
You might like if you enjoy: Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Outlaws, ZZ Top
Tell me more: On April 9, Lynyrd Skynyrd: Live At Knebworth '76 will be released as a DVD+CD, Blu-ray+CD, limited edition 2LP+DVD, and via digital video. The restored performance captures the original lineup of the groundbreaking Southern rock troupe via an amazing performance in England staged on Aug. 21, 1976. Indeed, 14 months before the tragic October 20, 1977 plane crash took the lives of several members of Lynyrd Skynyrd, singer Ronnie Van Zant, bassist Leon Wilson, drummer Artimus Pyle, keyboardist Billy Powell, along with the triple guitar array of Gary Rossington, Allen Collins and Steve Gaines, and The Honkettes (backing vocalists Cassie Gaines, JoJo Billingsley, Leslie Hawkins) delivered an inspired performance in front of a crowd of more than 150,000 concertgoers. The 11-song setlist is a dream for die-hard followers of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame outfit as well as casual classic rock fans; "Workin' For MCA," "Saturday Night Special," "Gimme Three Steps," "Call Me The Breeze," "Sweet Home Alabama" and a spellbinding set-ending 13-minute version of the beloved "Freebird" are all here. Both the audio recording and visual quality featured on the new release are exceptional; it's amazing to think this performance was staged 45 years ago. The Blu-ray set also includes the full-length 2018 documentary "If I Leave Here Tomorrow: A Film About Lynyrd Skynyrd" as a bonus feature. A side note: this historic performance was part of a daylong festival that also featured performances from Todd Rundgren's Utopia, 10cc and headliners The Rolling Stones. Artist:
Allen Ginsberg
Title: Allen Ginsberg at Reed College: the first recorded reading of Howl and Other Poems (Omnivore Recordings)
You might like if you enjoy: Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, William S Burroughs
Tell me more: This writer was fortunate to review a live reading by Allen Ginsberg before a sold-out crowd at Chapman University in Orange, CA in April 1993, where the groundbreaking beat poet read a sampling of his older and newer works. Sadly, the famed writer passed away five years after that memorable reading at the age of 70. Ginsberg was among the most controversial writers of his time, rattling the cage of the establishment with his opposition of militarism, sexual repression and capitalism. Los Angeles-based Omnivore Recordings has released the first recorded reading of Ginsberg's best-known poem "Howl," recorded on Feb. 14, 1956. Allen Ginsberg at Reed College: the first recorded reading of Howl and Other Poems is not only a thought-provoking celebration of Ginsberg's talents but a historical document that was long to have been thought forgotten until author John Suiter (researching at Reed College's Hauser Memorial Library in Portland, Oregon) found the tape in a box in 2007. In addition to "Howl," the new release has Ginsberg reading several shorter poems as well including "Wild Orphan" "Over Kansas" and "A Dream Record." Cheryl Pawelski, Grammy Award-winning record producer and co-founder of Omnivore Recordings, worked with the Ginsberg Estate to release the remastered Allen Ginsberg at Reed College: the first recorded reading of Howl and Other Poems via audio CD, digital and LP on April 2, 2021. Information: OmnivoreRecordings.com

Artist:
First Aid Kit
Title: Who By Fire (Sony Sweden / Columbia Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Emmylou Harris, Leonard Cohen, Jennifer Warnes
Tell me more: Leave it to a pair of Swedish sisters to deliver the ultimate tribute to the late Leonard Cohen. First Aid Kit  Klara and Johanna Söderberg  have released Who By Fire, a live 20-track recording captured across two nights at the Royal Dramatic Theater in Stockholm in March of 2017. Conceived and anchored by First Aid Kit, the sisters were joined by a number of fellow Swedish guests, an eight-member band and strings, two actors as well as a large choir on two of the songs. A mix of Cohen's original songs, poems and letters were included in the two-performance event chronicled on Who By Fire (released April 2, 2021). The Söderberg sisters are bona fide fans of Cohen, who passed away at the age of 82 on Nov. 7, 2016. Who By Fire celebrates Cohen's work via a diverse array of compositions, including the stirring "Suzanne," gorgeous "If It Be Your Will," plaintive "Hallelujah" (where they are joined by Annika Norlin), edgy "Famous Blue Raincoat," otherworldly masterwork "You Want It Darker" and gallant "Everybody Knows" (with guest Frida Hyvönen). The performances of Cohen's songs and poetry across "Who By Fire" are uniformly beautiful without diminishing the power of the literate tales of faith, romance, political strife and loss. Information: FirstAidKitBand.com.

Artist:
The Armoires
Title: Incognito (Big Stir Records)
You might like if you enjoy: The Monkees, Matthew Sweet, Bright Blue Gorilla, XTC
Tell me more: When you release your album on April 1st   also known as April Fools' Day   best to make it count. That's exactly what The Armoires have accomplished via the joyful "Incognito." Led by Big Stir Records record label founders Rex Broome (vocals, guitar) and Christina Bulbenko (vocals, keyboards), the quintet also includes noted music writer/drummer John Borack, viola/violin player Larysa Bulbenko and bassist Clifford Ulrich. Incognito is actually a culmination of an ambitious six-month "secret project" where the Burbank-based group released a series of singles  each issued under a different fictitious "new and undiscovered" band name. Incognito collects the diverse material and the results are as wonderful as the concept. Anchored by the group's shining vocal harmonies, solid musicianship and artful arrangements, the blend of creative covers and originals keeps the momentum moving across the disc's 18-track run. Early title favorites include a magnetic cover of John Cale's "Paris 1919," an irresistible rendering of the Christie gem "Yellow River," the driving countrified "Bagfoot Run," a Gram Parsons-mining "Homebound" and shimmering take on the 20/20 classic "The Night I Heard A Scream." The wistful reworking of Andy Gibb's "Words And Music," infectious "Walking Distance," baroque pop sparkler "Magenta Moon" and beguiling styles-blending "Awkward City Limits" are among the late LP standouts. Information: BigStirRecords.com.

Artist:
Tom Holkenborg
Title: Godzilla vs. Kong (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) (Watertower Music)
You might like if you enjoy: Hans Zimmer, Tom Holkenborg
Tell me more: Just weeks after composer Tom Holkenborg saw the release of his original motion picture soundtrack for "Zack Snyder's Justice League" receive well-deserved praise, his talents can be heard on Godzilla vs. Kong (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack). Issued a couple of days before the exciting Adam Wingard-directed film landed in theaters and on HBO Max on March 31, the 15-track soundtrack is a triumph with its mix of orchestral muscle, bold electronica and raging sound effects. For example, when Kong is featured on the screen the music is typically more classical in nature (as evidenced by the beautiful symphonic sweep in "Skull Island (Kong's Theme)," "A New Language" and "Antarctica"), thereby emphasizing the sympathetic qualities of the character. Elsewhere when Godzilla or manmade technological dangers loom, the music is decidedly more kinetic in tune with that monster's more volatile nature; the tempestuous "Tasman Sea" and aggressive "Mega" take advantage of the composer's ability to blend music and sound designs in dynamic ways to enhance a blockbuster. On the final track, "Hong Kong," Holkenborg is able to masterfully weave a myriad of sonic spheres together over the course of 13 magnificent minutes. Information: watertower-music.com.

First Aid Kit returns with cover of Ted Gärdestad’s "Come Give Me Love"

Check out First Aid Kit's colorful and super-uplifting version of  Ted Gärdestad’s "Come Give Me Love". The English and Swedish versions are both fantastic...Robert Kinsler

FIRST AID KIT RETURNS WITH COVER OF TED GÄRDESTAD’S “COME GIVE ME LOVE”

RELEASED ALONGSIDE THE SWEDISH CANCER SOCIETY’S LAUNCH OF THEIR ANNUAL PINK RIBBON DESIGNED BY KLARA AND JOHANNA SÖDERBERG THIS YEAR

Today, First Aid Kit has released their cover of Ted Gärdestad’s “Come Give Me Love.” The Söderberg sisters recorded two versions of the song: one with the original Swedish lyrics, and an English version with their own translated lyrics. Watch animated lyric videos by Mero for both versions HERE. First Aid Kit’s re-work of “Come Give Me Love” comes alongside the Swedish Cancer Society’s launch of their annual pink ribbon, which Klara and Johanna designed this year.

In speaking about the song release, First Aid Kit says:
”Ted Gärdestad is a Swedish national treasure. Just like us he started his music career when he was only a teenager and wrote songs with his older brother Kenneth. Ted did most of the melodies and Kenneth the lyrics. ‘Come Give Me Love’ is a classic song about a relationship coming to an end. To us, it is the epitome of Swedish summer, holding both hope, longing, and a twinge of sadness.

The original track was produced by none other than Björn and Benny from ABBA, with ABBA on backing vocals. We are huge fans of the original production and wanted to stay close to that 70s folky sound. This is an homage to that time period and recording style. We recorded this with producer Daniel Bengtson at Studio Rymden in Stockholm earlier this spring. We think the added vocal harmonies bring that unique First Aid Kit touch to the song. We hope more people will discover this gem through our translated version and that it brings some feeling of hope to what has been a very dark year.”

Discussing their partnership with the Swedish Cancer Society on the design of the annual pink ribbon, First Aid Kit says: “This year we designed the pink ribbon for the Swedish Cancer Society (Cancerfonden). When we found out that the Swedish Cancer Society used ‘Come Give Me Love’ for their campaign movie last year, we figured this was a great opportunity to finally record our rendition of it. Once the Swedish Cancer Society reached out and asked if we wanted to design this year's pink ribbon, we of course accepted without hesitation. The pink ribbon is a very important campaign and the more we can contribute to cancer research, the better. With our design, we wanted to pay tribute to companionship and the bond that entwines us. It's about sisterhood, love, and hope. To have someone to hold your hand when you’re venturing into unchartered territory, that security means everything.”
“Come Give Me Love” follows the release of their successful album Ruins, the ‘Tender Offerings’ EP, and singles “Strange Beauty” and “On The Road Again.”

ZZ Top’s big, brazen blues-rock, combined with a surrealist charisma that continues to intrigue fans, catapulted the band into worldwide stardom. Their history is deeply explored in ZZ Top: That Little Ol’ Band From Texas, which will be released via Eagle Rock Entertainment on DVD, Blu-ray and digitally on February 28, 2020. The release is available along with exclusive That Little Ol’ Band merchandise bundles from https://smarturl.it/ZZTopDoc now.
Produced by the award-winning Banger Films (Super Duper Alice Cooper; Peabody/ International Emmy award-winning Netflix series Hip-Hop Evolution), ZZ Top: That Little Ol’ Band From Texas, presented through the unique Banger Films lens, delivers the story of this power trio in an artistic style that complements the distinctive ZZ Top vibe. Originally premiered at a sold-out showing at the Cinerama Dome in Hollywood earlier this year, the film experienced a successful 10-week theatrical run via 150 screens nationally.
It unveils the story of three teenage blues musicians: guitarist Billy F Gibbons, bassist Dusty Hill, and drummer Frank Beard, as they went on to become international sensations. The film traces ZZ Top’s rich legacy, from their bar gig beginnings to their defining MTV era and meteoric rise to fame. In addition to interviews with the band members, the disc features conversations with such high-profile fans as Billy Bob Thornton and Joshua Homme (Queens Of the Stone Age), as well as never-before-seen archival footage. Shot exclusively for this film, an intimate ZZ Top performance at the historic Gruene Hall – the oldest dance hall in Texas – is intercut throughout the documentary.
Alongside the film, the DVD & Blu-ray also includes two live performance segments. 18 minutes of the Gruene Hall performance, along with the Ham Estate Archive, which spotlights rare pre-Eliminator ZZ Top concert footage from 1976 and 1981, complete the set.
Currently celebrating their half-century career with extensive tours of both Europe and North America, ZZ Top continues to inspire fans 50 years after their inception. That Little Ol’ Band From Texas takes a deep dive into the band’s history that’s truly an interesting ride.

From left, Maja Francis, Johanna Söderberg and Klara Söderberg.
First Aid Kit stopped by Swedish radio station Musikhjälpen and joined Maja Francis for a performance of Roxette’s “It Must Have Been Love” in honor of the late Marie Fredriksson. Listen here. First Aid Kit says: “We wanted to perform this song as a tribute to Marie and her magic." A beautiful and moving version of the classic 1986 song to be sure.

A little more than 43 years ago, Meridian, MS, native Steve Forbert boarded a train bound for New York City. Twenty-one years old at the time, Forbert, with his guitar and harmonica, spent two years working his way up from street performer living at the YMCA to filling historic Greenwich Village clubs and signing a major label contract. By 1979, Forbert had hit his stride with the release of Jackrabbit Slim, which produced his first top 40 hit, “Romeo’s Tune.” Today, a limited edition vinyl reissue of Jackrabbit Slim, remastered by the legendary Ted Jensen of Sterling Sound (The Eagles, The B-52s, Dave Matthews, Norah Jones) is available via Blue Rose Music. A special 500 copies were pressed on red-colored wax; only a few are left and available for purchase here. Forbert recently played fan favorites from Jackrabbit Slim with his band The New Renditions at the SiriusXM studio for Outlaw Country and is set to embark on an East Coast tour in January.

In addition to “Romeo’s Tune,” Jackrabbit Slim introduced the world to Forbert’s Mississippi instincts and catchy-but-deep rock and roll tunes. From the rollicking “Say Goodbye To Little Jo” to the almost-reggae-tinged “Complications” to the straight-ahead folk of “January 23-30, 1978,” Jackrabbit Slim spans Forbert’s early creative potential, all while entertaining different types of listeners. “Jackrabbit Slim was the release that put me on the map and gave me the audience that’s still with me today,” says Forbert. “Every singer/songwriter needs one of these!”

Artists like Keith Urban, Rosanne Cash, and Marty Stuart have covered songs from Jackrabbit Slim and Forbert’s extensive 20 album catalog. And in 2017, twenty-one artists paid tribute to Steve by recording An American Troubadour: The Songs of Steve Forbert, further validating the quality of Forbert’s musicianship, writing, and profound contributions to Americana and Folk music.

In late October, The Mississippi Arts Commission announced that Forbert will be honored as the “Excellence in Music” recipient at the 2020 Governor’s Arts Awards. Taking place on February 6, 2020, in downtown Jackson, Mississippi, the Governor’s Arts Awards recognize outstanding work in the artistic disciplines as well as arts-based community development and arts patronage in Mississippi.

Diverse mix of genres shine across 2018 releases

It's hard to believe we're already halfway through 2018! Now seems like the perfect chance to revisit several of the year's under-the-radar album releases, as well as a surprise live release courtesy of First Aid Kit issued last week and an Eric Clapton documentary now available on DVD and blu-ray.

Artist: First Aid Kit
Title: Live from the Rebel Hearts Club (Columbia)
You might like if you enjoy: First Aid Kit, Fleet Foxes, Larkin Poe
Tell me more: First Aid Kit has just issued a special six-track EP, Live from the Rebel Hearts Club, which features live versions of select cuts featured on the Swedish folk duo's most recent studio album Ruins (released in January 2018) as well as a blistering version of the concert favorite "You Are the Problem Here." The release (recorded in December 2017) captures the magic of the Swedish sisters – Klara  (vocals, guitar) and Johanna Söderberg (vocals/bass guitar)  whose live recordings with a terrific touring band bring an additional level of depth and magic to their songcraft. The Söderbergs' otherworldly harmonies shimmer on "Rebel Heart," a song that both defines and defies Americana stylings; "Fireworks" is equally gorgeous with Klara and Johanna sharing lead vocal duties and once again using their harmonies to lift and bring nuanced power to their performance. The magic of "Live from the Rebel Hearts Club" doesn't end there; the traditional country strains of "Postcard" and resplendent "Nothing Has to Be True" also enthrall with each listen. The EP closes with "You are the Problem Here," a indie rocker that has emerged as an anthem of the burgeoning #MeToo movement with its straightforward message against sexual assault and misconduct against women. First Aid Kit is currently on a tour of the U.S., including an appearance at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles on Sept. 26. Information: FirstAidKitBand.com.

Artist: Chris Smither
Title: Call Me Lucky (Signature Sounds/Mighty Albert)
You might like if you enjoy: John Hiatt, Neil Young, Bob Dylan
Tell me more: Released in early March 2018, Chris Smither's 18th album Call Me Lucky is the singer-songwriter-guitarist's first new LP of original material in six years and is a wide-ranging exploration of a myriad of musical styles enhanced by his probing and thoughtful lyrics; stellar readings of the songs are bolstered by the deft work of Billy Conway (drums, percussion), David Goodrich (guitars, percussion, piano), and Matt Lorenz (violin, pump organ, guitar). One of the most interesting tracks on disc one is a completely reworked and reimagined version of Chuck Berry's "Maybellene," which is delivered in a minor key and with a Southern blues soundscape; a lonesome fiddle and pump organ augment Smither's rich baritone vocals. Equally potent are the sparse and beautiful originals "Down to the Sound" and "By the Numbers." Disc 2 features wonderful offerings as well, including an amazing American folk-styled recasting of The Beatles' "She Said She Said." Lovers of top-tier blues, folk and musical poets (think John Hiatt and Neil Young) will want to get a listen of this superb two-disc set. Information: SignatureSounds.com.

Artist: George St. Clair
Title: Ballads of Captivity and Freedom (George St. Clair Music)
You might like if you enjoy: The Eagles, Chris Hillman, David Serby
Tell me more: The vast plains of his West Texas youth are on display across George St. Clair's latest album, the 12-song Ballads of Capitivity and Freedom. Although St. Clair now calls Europe home, his new disc fully captures the spirit and vastness of the American west. Armed with a winning blend of traditional country, Mexican folk and 1970s country rock, St. Clair sings songs that look at the area's historic struggles between Native Americans and white colonizers, as well as the ongoing plight of migrants. The infectious "Tularosa," Laurel Canyon-flavored "The Places Where They Prayed," flamenco-tinged "Cynthia" and the country rocker "Up To Fail" are early standouts. The pensive "Cimarrones" and driving "New Mexico" further showcase the artist's unique approach. Information: GeorgeStClairMusic.com.

Artist: Eric Clapton
Title: Life in 12 Bars (Eagle Rock)
You might like if you enjoy: Eric Clapton
Tell me more: Directed by Academy Award winner Lili Fini Zanuck, Life in 12 Bars takes an honest and in-depth look at the life of Eric Clapton (the only three-time inductee to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame). Using archive photos and film clips along with revealing interviews with Clapton as well as members of his family, band mates, the late B.B. King, Jimi Hendrix and George Harrison, the 159-minute documentary is compelling at every turn. Covering the major events in his life spanning from his youth in Ripley, Surrey, England to his earliest recordings with the Roosters and the Yardbirds in the early '60s to his groundbreaking efforts with John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers, Cream and Blind Faith later in the decade and through his subsequent solo career, the documentary takes a full-look beyond his success as a guitar player and songwriter and examines the challenges he has faced with failed relationships and drug and alcohol abuse. Perhaps the most heartbreaking moments come when the film details the death of his 4-year-old son Conor who was killed in fall from a New York City apartment in 1991, a tragedy that ultimately inspired Clapton to write the timeless classic "Tears in Heaven." "Music saved me," Clapton admits when reflecting on his life near the end of the special. "It took the pain away." Life in 12 Bars is available on both DVD and blu-ray. In addition, an official audio soundtrack that includes 32 tracks spanning Clapton's amazing career is available as a 2-CD, 4-LP or digital format release. Information: eagle-rock.com.
