Title: Holding On: A Heal My Soul Companion (Provogue)
You might like if you enjoy: Alvin Lee, Joe Bonamassa, Walter Trout
Tell me more: When Jeff Healey passed away after a battle with cancer in March 2008, the 41-year-old Canadian artist left a lasting legacy as an outstanding singer-songwriter and guitar virtuoso. Now, previously-unreleased recordings from Healey are showcased on Holding On: A Heal My Soul Companion. The release features five rare Healey studio tracks that were recorded during the same time period (1996-1998) as the recordings that were featured on his acclaimed Heal My Soul album (released on what would have been Healey's 50th birthday) as well as a concert recorded in Oslo, Norway in 1999. "Love Takes Time" is a flat-out blues rocker that explodes with heartfelt vocals and fiery guitar work; "Every Other Guy" is a more confessional song, with a melodic chorus and nuanced lead fills. Healey's guitar prowess is showcased across the disc (particularly on the studio version of  "Dancing With the Monsters") and throughout the exhilarating concert recording. Information: JeffHealey.com.

Artist: Hope Sandoval and the Warm Inventions
Title: Until the Hunter (Tendril Tales)

Tell me more: As the voice of '90s alt-music pioneers Mazzy Star, Hope Sandoval championed a dream pop sound blending neo-psychedelia, blues, alt-folk and Americana. The Los Angeles native went on to form the Warm Inventions in 2000 and that troupe released several albums including 2009's Through the Devil Softly, and returned from a five-year hiatus late in 2016 with a fantastic new album titled Until the Hunter released on the group's own independent record label Tendril Tales. Sandoval's overall style continues to mine the quieter and more introspective reaches of alternative folk rock. The new 11-track album features a tuneful duet "Let Me Get There" featuring Kurt Vile, the rootsy "The Peasant," the baroque folk of "The Hiking Song" and relatively buoyant "Isn't It True." Title: The Fall of a Rebel Angel (Republic Records)

Tell me more: More than 25 years after the release of Enigma's multi-platinum debut MCMXC a.D. composer-musician Michael Cretu has released "The Fall of a Rebel Angel." The first new Enigma release since 2008's Seven Lives Many Faces, the new album will certainly please fans of Cretu's previous releases, especially his 1990 debut. There is a rich mix of neo-classical, new age, worldbeat and electronica styles across the concept album, which "tells the story of a symbolic journey to redemption with everyone to define his individual path," according to Cretu. The mix of sound effects, song, spoken word, instrumentals and new age-meets-rock impulses is enhanced by guests such as Brazillian singer-songwriter Mark Josher, Indonesian singer Anggun and English pop duo Aquilo. Title: Salt (independent)
You might like if you enjoy: Mazzy Star, Cat Power
Tell me more: Katie Kim is the the pseudonym of Irish singer Katie Sullivan, whose third album Salt provides a thrilling and intense listen across its 9-track span. Kim uses her rich soprano in the service of ambient material that evokes haunted sonic spaces. Kim's voice is lush and lovely on the shimmering "Day is Coming," while low notes on a piano enthrall on "Body Break." The distorted droning on "I Make Sparks" recalls the darkest reaches of The Cure and The Jesus and Mary Chain. "Beautiful Human" is a fragmented journey, the artist's voice distant and alluring in the vast distance of sound. Information: katiekim.bandcamp.com.

Nobody embodies the defiant spirit of rock and blues quite like Jeff Healey. Born in Toronto on March 25th, 1966, the Canadian’s childhood was shattered by diagnosis with the rare ocular cancer retinoblastoma. Yet it never broke his stride, and through the late-’80s, ’90s and post-millennium, Jeff’s jaw-dropping guitar style and soul-drenched vocals saw him rise to multi-platinum sales, worldwide acclaim and collaborations with Stevie Ray Vaughan, B.B. King, John Mayall, Eric Clapton, The Rolling Stones, Lenny Kravitz, George Harrison, Mark Knopfler and Ian Gillan.

When Jeff died from sarcoma cancer on March 2nd, 2008, it felt like a tragic full-stop. Until now. Released on what would have been his 50th birthday, Heal My Soul is a ‘lost’ album comprising 12 unheard tracks, all rescued from the vaults, lovingly restored by the guitarist’s estate and alive with his spirit. “I think Jeff would have been so proud of this,” notes his widow, Cristie Healey. “It’s up there with his best work, by far.”

   

It’s quite a statement. Jeff Healey, after all, was a stone-cold phenomenon. Receiving his first guitar at the age of three, he quickly developed a groundbreaking style: by placing the guitar flat on his lap and playing it like a lap-steel, he was able to fret with all five fingers and attack notes with the strength of his whole hand. “Technically, he had a unique approach,” explains Jeff’s friend and fellow guitar virtuoso Sonny Landreth. “He had great sensibilities and instincts. When he would bend strings, play double-stops and chords, it just sounded totally different. It had a big open sound to it. He was so fluid and soulful.”

“Jeff was one of the most unique players of all-time,” picks up session ace and Toto legend Steve Lukather. “He redefined what the guitar can do and how you can play it. Pure soul and fire.”

That trailblazing guitar technique drove Jeff’s career through two thrilling decades of material, taking in rock, blues and traditional jazz. With his earliest vehicle – The Jeff Healey Band – he recorded five studio albums and contributed to the soundtrack of the cult classic, Road House (a film in which Jeff and the band were featured prominently alongside Patrick Swayze). But there was trouble behind the scenes, and though Jeff’s songwriting was firing on all cylinders in the late-’90s, the lineup’s meltdown meant the tracks he wrote in that period were shelved until Heal My Soul. “He’d play me rough mixes of these songs,” remembers Roger Costa, Jeff’s dear friend and co-administrator of his estate. “I remember being absolutely floored – but no-one ever heard them.”

“There’s a lot more edge to these songs,” adds Cristie of hard-rocking moments like Daze Of The Night and Temptation. “A lot more passion. And I think that comes from where he was at the time. The band were just coming apart at the seams at that point.”

After The Jeff Healey Band’s final album Get Me Some (2000), Jeff’s career moved on apace. A Grammy nominee and Juno award-winner, he was also a radio personality, a noted jazz historian and world-famous record collector (owning a collection of ’20s and ’30s jazz 78s that would ultimately top out at over 30,000 platters). In addition to his countless recording sessions as a guitarist, trumpet player, singer and producer, Jeff also recorded three albums of the traditional American jazz that was so close to his heart. Just prior to his passing, Jeff put the finishing touches to the award-winning Mess Of Blues, his first blues-rock album in eight years. “He was a musician’s musician,” remembers Steve Lukather. “We shared a common bond of loving so many different types of music outside our respective genres, but I was very surprised that he was such a jazz buff when we first met. He played so many instruments. A bad-ass trumpet player as well.”

Jeff’s impact on the world went far beyond music. He was an advocate for the blind, as well as for literacy, and showed his support by lending his name and time to various CNIB fundraisers (as well as Toronto's Word On The Street festival). As a childhood cancer survivor himself, Jeff took every opportunity to help support Sick Kids Hospital, focusing on Daisy's Eye Cancer Fund (a childhood retinoblastoma research foundation), which has made great strides and even helped the amazing progress of his own son's retinoblastoma treatment. One of the many ways he helped support Daisy's was through his annual It's a Very Healey Christmas charity show at his eponymous club (opened in 2001, it was one of two nightclubs that would bear Jeff's name in his hometown of Toronto). “He was an unbelievable gentleman,” remembers Walter Trout. “A gentle, beautiful soul.”

His high-profile career meant that Jeff was a beacon of inspiration to disabled people around the world. Awarded an honorary doctorate from McMaster University and inducted into the Terry Fox Hall of Fame, the guitarist represented determination, equal opportunity and a passion to stay true to your dreams, no matter what the obstacle. “I really admired him for overcoming a handicap like that,” notes Sonny Landreth, “and for how he just rose to the occasion, big-time, in other ways. It was so impressive and I just had a great deal of respect for him.” 

Stoical and good-humoured in the face of his ongoing health setbacks, it was a seismic blow to his legion of fans when Jeff finally passed away aged just 41, following a three-year battle with sarcoma cancer. “He was always growing as a musician,” sighs Walter Trout. “He was always trying to get better and expand. I think it’s really a tragedy how he died so young, and it was a tragedy how he went, too. A sad thing.”

“I was able to say goodbye and tell him how much I loved him the night before he passed,” remembers Steve Lukather. “We spoke on the phone – he was kind enough to take my call. I will never, ever forget him and his unique genius. He will be remembered as one of the best of the best. I’m honoured to have known him as a friend and also as someone I can say I played with.”

As Jeff’s unofficial archivist since the ’80s, Roger Costa had his first notion of starting the Heal My Soul project in the months after his friend’s passing. By early 2015, a forest of red tape had finally been fought through, allowing Roger to embark on what he calls a “labour of love”: researching the lost songs, recovering the two-inch masters, baking and transferring them to digital, reviewing the material, fixing and completing the mixes. As he recalls, it was a poignant experience: “Amongst the folks that were in the studio working on these recordings, there were a lot of moments where everyone was getting choked up. There’s a lot of emotion running through everything. There were times, particularly on songs like Baby Blue – or any song that had harmony vocals – when we’d just pop them up in the studio by themselves. And it was like he was there. It was like he was never gone.”

The process might have been an emotional rollercoaster, but with Heal My Soul enjoying worldwide acclaim and alerting a new wave of fans to the genius of Jeff Healey, there’s no doubt it’s been worth it. “It’s great that his legacy is being kept alive,” says Sonny Landreth. “Certainly, his music lives on, and for his fans, it’s stronger than ever. But it’s important to turn the next generation on to people like Jeff. He’s right up with the all-time greats…”

On October 7, Eagle Rock Entertainment will release Live At The Horseshoe Tavern from the Jeff Healey Band on CD and Digital Audio [MSRP $13.98]

In December 1993, The Jeff Healey Band was completing their tour in support of the recently released Feel This album, which culminated in several nights at the legendary Horseshoe Tavern, in their hometown of Toronto. Embellished by two backup singers and keyboard player Washington Savage, The Jeff Healey Band delivered a homecoming barnburner, blazing with favorites like “See The Light,” “Roadhouse Blues,” and “Baby’s Lookin’ Hot.” Nestled in-between the high-energy set list was a 3-song acoustic set, including “That’s What They Say,” “You’re Coming Home,” and “Angel Eyes,” as well as stellar set-closing covers of “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” and “The Thrill Is Gone.” It was a well-rounded set, made all the more special by performing in their hometown.

Live At The Horseshoe Tavern is one of several classic Jeff Healey Band concerts that Eagle Rock has unveiled from the vaults, including Live From NYC (2013), Live At Grossman’s (2011), Full Circle – The Live Anthology (2011), and Live At Montreux (2005). The band was helmed by guitarist/vocalist Jeff Healey, who lost his sight at infancy. However, one can say that made his sense of sound that much stronger: a masterful musician with a unique style, he championed the lap pedal-steel style of blues guitar. His soulful vocals, instrumental dexterity, and ability to traverse genre styles won over blues and blues-rock fans the world over, until his untimely passing in 2008.

Live At The Horseshoe Tavern brilliantly captures the power of the Jeff Healey Band live.

March 1, 2012: Warner Music Group (WMG) today unveiled plans for ‘The Warner Sound’, an original YouTube Channel to be available at www.youtube.com/thewarnersound or www.thewarnersound.com from March 13, 2012. Built around exclusive access to superstars, celebrities and breaking talent, 'The Warner Sound' YouTube channel will offer an eclectic mix of specially-produced programs, all with music at their core. The digital destination will embrace a broad spectrum of genres and formats, from artist interviews, back-stage documentaries and live events to animated series, scripted comedy and experimental concepts that take advantage of YouTube’s unique technology. Select programs will give fans the chance to decide the direction of the action, interact with artists or offer feedback. Accessible world-wide, 'The Warner Sound' will also feature rare films from Warner Music’s vaults as well as material from artist channels.

The launch of the channel will be celebrated with a live-stream of performances at 'The Warner Sound Captured By Nikon' showcase at the South by Southwest® Music & Media Conference (SXSW®) in Austin, Texas. From March 13 through March 15, this will include gigs by T.I., B.o.B, Dr.John, Ed Sheeran, Gary Clark, Jr., Kimbra and Theophilus London, among many others. Once the channel is live, show production will gather pace, with further compelling features and personalities unveiled in the proceeding weeks.

Unveiling the channel, Lyor Cohen, Chairman & CEO, Recorded Music, Warner Music Group said "The Warner Sound will be a unique opportunity for artists to further their creativity, excite their fans and diversify their careers. Collaborating with an array of talent from across our labels, we will produce highly original music programming and digital entertainment. •‘The Live Room’: Intimate performances shot in legendary recording studios around the world. Artists will perform their own music alongside covers of iconic songs recorded in that very space. The premiere will feature B.o.B at Tree Sound Studios in Atlanta, with Regina Spektor also scheduled for a future episode, shot in New York. Produced by Michael Thelin Productions.

•'Countdown To...': An up-close look at the last frenetic days before a hotly-anticipated album comes out. In the first instalment, teen rap sensation Diggy criss-crosses the country headlining tours, shooting music videos, meeting fans and even doing homework. A new episode will appear every day for a week leading up to the release of ‘Unexpected Arrival’ on March 20.

•‘Finding Cody Simpson’: Using YouTube's annotation technology, fans will be able to create their own Cody Simpson movie. In a scripted, "choose your own adventure" series, viewers will drive the action as they follow along one fan's journey to meet Cody Simpson. Produced by Studio 13 Productions (Dan Fogler, Michael Canzoniero, Thomas Sullivan).

Touring in 1993 in support of their Feel This album, The Jeff Healey Band hit The Peer Blues Festival in Belgium running! The double-disc package-which includes the show both visually and aurally-contains 12 tight, taut gems in Dolby Digital Stereo and Dolby 5.1. The songs are highlighted by Healey's soulful vocals and his wild'n'wooly over-the-top electric guitar solos, played in his inimitable style on his lap like a dobro. His visceral, energetic performance sets the crowd buzzing right from note #1.

The 82 minutes fly by as Healey really gets into his signature cover of George Harrison's "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" as well as "Roadhouse Blues" by The Doors and some of his own classic tracks including "Angel Eyes" and "Full Circle." Making this particular performance special is the fact that the trio is augmented by two backing vocalists and a keyboard player. This takes the presentation up to a whole new level as the band is, in effect, doubled. Besides the Feel This material, Healey performs tracks off his very popular See The Light and Hell To Pay albums.


Jeff Healey (1966-2008) was a Canadian singer/songwriter/guitarist of mammoth talent who fused a love of blues and rockin' anthems into a jam-happy stew of crowd-crazy proportions. He could sing like an angel, sting like a bee on his axe and perform like he was born to do so.

Full Circle: The Live Anthology With Three CDs and One DVD Lands November 1, 2011

Known as one of the great guitar players of his generation, Healey, blind since age one, played the guitar on his lap, pedal-steel style. His soulful vocals and instrumental dexterity criss-crossed genres with ease but his heart was firmly entrenched within the blues-rock tradition.


Three complete concerts, captured in stunning aural clarity (Dolby Digital Stereo) are represented in this incredible set. In 1989, the Jeff Healey Band supported its See The Light debut album by performing at the prestigious Montreal Jazz Festival. In 1991, the band toured Switzerland appearing at the St. Gallen Open Air Festival (on CD and DVD in this set). In 1995, after achieving international fame, they returned home to Toronto for a rousing hero’s welcome in front of a hometown crowd, in support of their Cover To Cover album.

Warren Haynes Presents: The Benefit Volume 4, a 2-disc live benefit concert featuring Gov't Mule, Bob Weir & Friends, John Hiatt & The Goners, Robert Randolph & The Family Band, moe and more will be released December 6, 2011 via Evil Teen. The Benefit Volume 4 was recorded at the 14th annual Warren Haynes Christmas Jam in Asheville, NC on December 21, 2002. Proceeds from the album will Benefit the Asheville Chapter of Habitat for Humanity.

The Benefit Volume 4 features over 2.5 hours of scorching blues, roots and rock including Bob Weir & Friends versions of classic Grateful Dead songs including "Truckin," Gov't Mule favorites "Sco-Mule" and "Worried Down with the Blues" and a mind-bending slide guitar/pedal steel duel between Warren and Robert Randolph set to "Shake Your Hips."

CURT SMITH ANNOUNCES RELEASE DATE FOR “MAYFIELD”

Tears For Fears Co-Founder To Reissue Out Of Print Solo Album


Tears For Fears co-founder Curt Smith has announced that he’ll be re-releasing his long out-of-print solo album, Mayfield, on November 15, 2011 via his own KOOK Media imprint and eOne Music Canada (for Canadian digital sales). The release will include a new bonus track, “Trees,” featuring Janice Whaley.


“Mayfield was a band I formed after moving to New York, a couple of years into my hiatus from Tears For Fears,” Smith says. “The premise was to not use my name (hence “Mayfield”: Curt-is Mayfield, get it?) and just try to rediscover the joys of music through playing live. We played at downtown New York clubs like Brownie’s, Mercury Lounge and CBGB’s. Those were a couple of the most enjoyable years I’ve spent as a musician.”


The songs on Mayfield, written with Smith’s longtime collaborator Charlton Pettus, were recorded live, with overdubbing and editing used sparingly. The album, released in 1997, was recorded in just three weeks. In addition to Smith (who played bass and handled all the lead vocals), Mayfield’s members included Pettus on guitar and backing vocals, Doug Petty on keyboards, Russ Irwin on keyboards and backing vocals, and Shawn Pelton on drums. Petty and Pettus have played in the Tears For Fears touring band since 2004.


The album’s original tracklist remains intact, and includes a bonus re-recording of the song “Trees.” Musician Janice Whaley, known for “The Smiths Project,” used multiple loops of her own voice as the instrument bed for the track, to mesmerizing effect, and Smith laid down a new lead vocal. Fans who already own Mayfield will be able to purchase the bonus track by itself via digital download.

“Mayfield” will be available in digital format from all major online retailers, and in physical CD format from Amazon.com and at Smith’s shows. Smith also plans a limited edition Mayfield deluxe bundle that will include exclusive collectibles, which will be available only on his website at curtsmithofficial.com.
