David Crosby releases new live track "Guinnevere" from his first ever live album and full concert DVD set

Celebrated singer-songwriter David Crosby has just released "Guinnevere," an advance track from his first ever live album! I last caught Crosby live at The Troubadour back in 2014 and he was fantastic (revisit my review of that concert HERE)...Robert Kinsler

Two-time Rock & Roll Hall of Famer and co-founder of the Byrds and Crosby, Stills & NashDavid Crosby, today releases another live offering with the song “Guinnevere” from his forthcoming first ever solo live CD/DVD set.

The folk-rock legend and cultural force for over fifty years continues his late period renaissance with the release of David Crosby & The Lighthouse Band Live at the Capitol Theatre, arriving December 9, 2022 via BMG. Pre–order/pre-add/pre-save the set on CD and digital here.

Continuing to forge new paths in his eighth decade, Crosby again joins forces with Becca Stevens, Michelle Willis and Michael League, the three musicians known as The Lighthouse Band, who he’s been working with since 2016’s Lighthouse album.

Far from just a solo live album/DVD, working with his first new band since CPR (Crosby, Pevar and Raymond), Crosby and The Lighthouse Band quickly discovered their chemistry took a collaborative leap during their 2018 tour together in support of Crosby’s seventh solo album Here if You Listen (2018, BMG) culminating in this live recorded set on the last night of the run.

Recorded and filmed at the historic Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY, in a particularly meaningful turn for Crosby, the sixteen track live offering also includes an uncut gem with the song 1974” - a long-lost demo track that Crosby had floating around on his computer hard drive for decades.

Peter Shapiro (Owner, The Capitol Theatre) says, “Hosting David Crosby at The Capitol Theatre was an honor for us and when David came out and crushed his performance it elevated things even further. We feel very fortunate that this legendary moment was captured forever.”

This very special live performance acts as a celebration of sorts as it spotlights the kindred relationship Crosby shares with League, Stevens and Willis.

Stevens offers, “The Lighthouse band is family. David and I tease about my not “understanding the magnitude of his brilliance”. I didn’t grow up with his music. I knew his name, but that was about it. I’ve gotten to know him purely through my experience of him in the present moment, generous, endlessly inspired, ambitious, and completely insane (in all my favorite ways). A man who has known immense fame, and yet would start a band at seventy something with three youngish weirdos, begging them to share the light with him. There’s something truly wonderful in that, and truly David.”

Willis adds, “He (Crosby) has gifted us his friendship, care, wisdom, humor, family, and community. And in addition, he has given Mike, Becca and I endless tools to create something of beauty to offer. This is because he truly believes in music, and its ability to profoundly change and make better those who encounter it. I’m so grateful to have a fighter like Croz in my life.”

New Music: The Cowsills, Jane Monheit, Raul Midón, Buck Owens and the Buckaroos

A diverse field of artists are featured across four outstanding new titles.

Artist:
The Cowsills
Title: Rhythm of the World (Omnivore Recordings)
You might like if you enjoy: Badfinger, The Byrds, The Beach Boys, The Turtles, The Bangles
Tell me more: Musical family The Cowsills released a series of popular singles and albums in the late 1960s and early '70s before going on hiatus in 1972 — music aficionados should note the Cowsills were even the inspiration for the 1970s TV series "The Partridge Family." Although the Cowsills reunited to record new albums in 1978 and 1993, the group's return to record the full-length 2022 masterwork Rhythm of the Worlds is a true triumph. The 11-song disc is filled with songs that reflect the sharp songcraft of the best artists of the '60s and '70s; it is no stretch to note the originals on the new album featuring siblings Bob, Susan and Paul Cowsill would be at home on classic titles from the Byrds, Badfinger, The Turtles or the Mamas & the Papas. There isn't a bad song on the disc; standouts include the instantly-catchy melodic gems "Lend a Hand" and "Try to Believe It Too," Americana-styled "Hawks on the Line," melodic rocker "Every Little Secret," power pop-flavored title track, yearning folk rocker "The Long Run" and decidedly modern "Nuclear Winter." Artist:
Jane Monheit
Title: The Merriest (Club44 Records)
You might like if you enjoy: jazz, holiday music, Jane Monheit's 2005 album "The Season"
Tell me more: Top-tier jazz vocalist Jane Monheit celebrates the magic  and music  of the season via her newly-released Christmas-minded The Merriest. Armed with a beautiful voice that effortlessly scales the range of holiday favorites featured across the nine-track disc, there is a mix of uptempo numbers and emotive ballads to enjoy. Among the highlights on the album is a joyful "Let It Snow! Let it Snow! Let it Snow!" (bolstered by Max Haymer's stellar piano playing), the lovely "The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire)," zestful "The Merriest," a sublime reading of "Christmas Time is Here" and lively "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year," as well as the first ever recording of Broadway legend Cy Coleman's "(Christmas) Stay With Me." The acclaimed singer also teams with John Pizzarelli for a swinging take on "That Holiday Feeling." Information: JaneMonheitOnline.com

Artist:
Raul Midón
Title: Eclectic Adventurist (ReKondite ReKords)
You might like if you enjoy: Raul Midón, Laurence Juber, Craig Chaquico
Tell me more: Guitar virtuoso Raul Midón is set to return with his latest album, the ambitious Eclectic Adventurist. Recorded during the midst of the pandemic, the instrumental album finds Midón joining forces with 10 other greats for an ambitious disc filled with bewitching guitar duets. Spanning Latin, pop, folk, gypsy and jazz genres, the selection is sure to please discerning listeners who have an interest in not only guitar but instrumental music. Highlights abound on the compelling set, including the gentle "Serendipity" with Jonathan Kreisberg, dazzling "Una Mas" with Alex Cuba, jazzy "Loueke" featuring Lionel Loueke, nuanced "Nautical" with Julia Bailen and sparkling "Blues For Mike" with Mike SternDean Parks joins Midón on the flamenco-tinged "Waiting Game" and later on for the aptly-titled "Gentle Ascent." Eclectic Adventurist will be released on Nov. 11, 2022. Information: RaulMidon.com.

Artist:
Buck Owens and the Buckaroos
Title: Bakersfield Gold: Top 10 Hits 1959-1974 (Omnivore Recordings)
You might like if you enjoy: Buck Owens and the Buckeroos, Dwight Yoakam
Tell me more: Buck Owens scored a whopping 46 Top 10 hits  including 19 number one hits  between 1959 and 1974. Now that stellar parade of memorable hits he tracked with The Buckaroos, Rose Maddox, Buddy Alan, Susan Raye and others have been gathered together on the aptly-titled Bakersfield Gold. A beautiful physical package (the audio CD version is reviewed here), the set features new liner notes from Randy Poe (author of Buck 'Em: The Autobiography Of Buck Owens) and historical images. The range of material extends from flashy uptempo cuts and duets to tender ballads. Enduring classics such as the bittersweet "Under The Influence of Love," the 1963 number one "Act Naturally" (later famously recorded by The Beatles and featuring lead vocals from Ringo Starr), tuneful "Love's Gonna Live Here," longing "I Don't Care (Just As Long As You Love Me)," rowdy "I've Got a Tiger By The Tail," bluegrass-adorned "Ruby (Are You Mad)" and lovely "It Takes People Like You (To Make People Like Me)." Among the more interesting tracks on the collection are Owens' rousing cover of Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode" and a majestic musical reading of Paul Simon's "Bridge Over Troubled Water."  Bakersfield Gold is available on double-CD, triple-LP and via digital. Information: OmnivoreRecordings.com.

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers cover J.J. Cale classic “Call Me The Breeze,” track debuts with hand-illustrated video

Watch the wonderful and delightfully colorful music video for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' version of J.J. Cale's enduring song "Call Me The Breeze"...Robert Kinsler

TOM PETTY AND THE HEARTBREAKERS COVER J.J. CALE CLASSIC
“CALL ME THE BREEZE,” DEBUT TRACK
WITH HAND-ILLUSTRATED VIDEO

“Call Me The Breeze” Video Still (by Jeff Scher)

Taken from legendary 20-show run at The Fillmore

Live At The Fillmore (1997) is out Nov. 25, 2022

The infectious rendition of J.J. Cale’s classic “Call Me The Breeze,” performed by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers during their legendary 20-show run at the Fillmore is out now,
with an accompanying video directed and hand-illustrated by Emmy Award-winning Jeff Scherwatch HERE and listen HERE. The new track is taken from the highly-anticipated Live at the Fillmore (1997)—Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ first live record in over a decadeset for release November 25 on Warner Records. Pre-save/pre-order HERE
The video features characterful animations of Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers performing live at the Fillmore, hand drawn by educator and filmmaker Scher. “‘Call Me The Breeze’ is an anthem to freedom,” says Scher, whose body of work includes music videos for Bob Dylan, Paul Simon and others as well as pieces in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, The Harvard Film Archive, The Centre Pompidou and the National Film Archive of Austria. “The most direct metaphor for me was driving and the joy of unrestricted motion which made me think of the way things blur when they fly past.  I was excited to try and recreate that motion blur with paint and pastel. I started with the first shot and just kept adding shots and cutting it together as I went. You might say it just evolved as it grew.  Making the video in this way felt like I’d incorporated the spirit of the song into the process of making the video.”
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were long-time fans of the late singer J. J. Cale. The band frequently played his songs in their sets, and Petty often played Cale songs on his acclaimed “Buried Treasure” show on Tom Petty Radio. “Call Me The Breeze” is one of two J. J. Cale covers on Live at the Fillmore, alongside “I’d Like To Love You Baby.” Other album highlights include Bob Dylan’s “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door,” The Rolling Stones’ “Time is On My Side” and more from The Kinks, Everly Brothers, Bill Withers, The Byrds and Chuck Berry, along with extended versions of original tracks “Mary Jane’s Last Dance” and “It’s Good To Be King.”
“Call Me The Breeze” is the latest offering from Live At The Fillmore, the legendary 20-show run that Petty noted as “the highpoint of our time together as a group.” An intimate, stripped-down version of “I Won’t Back Down” and “Listen To Her Heart,” with an accompanying video directed by Peter Sluszka, are also out now.
Last month previously unreleased, never-before-seen footage unearthed from the Petty estate vaults was released as part of a short film about the band’s legendary 1997 residency at the historic San Francisco venue. The captivating 20 sold-out show run included some of the most joyful, inspirational and prolific experiences of the band’s career, during which they were nicknamed the “Fillmore House Band.” Watch/share Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers: The Fillmore House Band (Short Film) HERE.

'Lennon, the Mobster & the Lawyer - The Untold Story' available now

 MEDIA RELEASE

For the Beatles fan in your life, light up their holiday with a revealing new memoir that tracks a largely unknown chapter in the life of JOHN LENNON...

Author-attorney Jay Bergen draws from his own personal experience as John Lennon's lawyer to uncover the dramatic under-the-radar courtroom battle (1975-76) when John was sued by a notorious mobster/music mogul.

Bergen’s book, Lennon, the Mobster & the Lawyer - The Untold Story (Devault Graves Books; May 1, 2022; U.S. $28.95; Softcover) relates the true story where Mafia-connected owner of Roulette Records, Morris Levy, released Roots, a bootleg version of a rock ’n’ roll oldies album John had been producing. Capitol Records' quick release of John Lennon Rock n’ Roll, the official album, resulted in two Levy lawsuits against John—and John’s counterclaims against Levy. The attempted shakedown led to a high stakes battle in US District Court where Bergen, partner in a prestigious NYC law firm, represented Lennon over the rights to his own recording. Millions of dollars were on the line.

Using John’s own words pulled from the trial transcript, Bergen recounts detailed strategy sessions where the two mapped out John’s testimony, including:

  • How John explained his recording process in poetic, exacting terms for a judge who knew little about The Beatles
  • John’s expertise in the recording studio; how he produced his records
  • Why John chose to do an album of ’50s rock songs he didn’t write
  • Detailed testimony in John’s own words revealing remarkable insights into the creative process of an acknowledged genius of rock music
