GRAMMY Award-winning rock band Switchfoot has joined forces with blues legend Buddy Guy for a collaboration unlike anything they’ve done before. “Last Man Standing” is a blistering fusion of rock and blues, built on searing guitar work, commanding vocals, and an undeniable sense of grit. It’s a meeting of two musical forces—one a pioneering icon, the other a band unafraid to push boundaries. The track, now available alongside an official visualizer, is also released in Dolby Atmos, delivering an immersive listening experience across all digital platforms.

Produced by Switchfoot and Tom Hambridge, “Last Man Standing” strips the blues down to its rawest form, driven by the unmistakable interplay between Buddy Guy and Jon Foreman. Their fiery vocal and guitar exchange is anchored by Chad Butler’s driving drums, Tim Foreman’s steady bassline, and a groove that effortlessly bridges generations of rock and blues.

A Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and eight-time GRAMMY winner, Guy continues to shape the future of blues while carrying its deep-rooted traditions.

“Last Man Standing” encapsulates that legacy—gritty, unrelenting, and steeped in lived experience. The lyrics paint a picture of survival and perseverance, delivered with the unmistakable conviction of two artists who understand the weight of time. “I’ve seen kings reduced to thieves, I’ve seen the writing on the wall. I’ve seen the great walls crumble, I’ve watched the nations fall.” The song reflects on life’s unpredictability and the resilience required to endure, culminating in the powerful refrain: “None of this is how I planned it, but I’m the last man standing.”

Producer and co-writer Tom Hambridge, known for his work with legends like B.B. King and Buddy Guy himself, describes the song as a rare fusion of worlds. “Switchfoot and Buddy Guy together. Two of my favorites,” Hambridge shares. “We had a ball writing and recording this unique collaboration. I think the fun we had producing it shines through on the record.”

ABOUT BUDDY GUY

At age 88, Buddy Guy is a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee, a major influence on rock titans like Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and Stevie Ray Vaughan, a pioneer of Chicago’s fabled West Side sound, and a living link to the city’s halcyon days of electric blues. Buddy was just seven years old when he fashioned his first makeshift “guitar”—a two-string contraption attached to a piece of wood and secured with his mother’s hairpins.

In 1957, he took his guitar to Chicago, where he would permanently alter the direction of the instrument, first on numerous sessions for Chess Records playing alongside Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, and the rest of the label’s legendary roster, and then on recordings of his own. His incendiary style left its mark on guitarists from Jimmy Page to John Mayer. “He was for me what Elvis was probably like for other people,” said Eric Clapton at Guy’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction in 2005. “My course was set, and he was my pilot.”

Seven years later, July 2012 proved to be one of Buddy Guy’s most remarkable years ever. He was awarded the 2012 Kennedy Center Honor for his lifetime contribution to American culture; earlier in the year, at a performance at the White House, he even persuaded President Obama to join him on a chorus of “Sweet Home Chicago.” Also in 2012, he published his long-awaited memoir, When I Left Home.

These many years later, Buddy Guy remains a genuine American treasure and one of the final surviving connections to an historic era in the country’s musical evolution.

Today, Tuesday, December 14, Clarksdale, Mississippi's own Christone "Kingfish" Ingram announced additional dates for his 2022 tour in support of his Grammy-nominated, critically and popularly acclaimed Alligator album, 662. Entitled Christone "Kingfish" Ingram Presents 662: Juke Joint Live, the tour is a partnership with Nashville-based Outback Presents, and will take the 22-year-old guitarist, vocalist and songwriter across the country with dates beginning March 2022 and going through May. According to Ingram, “I’m very excited to continue my ‘662 Juke Joint Live’ tour and to partner with Outback Presents to reach current and new fans in larger, more iconic music venues across the country. Just like a Mississippi juke joint, these shows will be high-energy, jumping, and lots of fun.” Mike Smardak, President of Outback Presents, is equally excited, saying, "We are thrilled to be working with Christone “Kingfish” Ingram and his team. Upon its July 2021 release, 662 (named for the telephone area code of Ingram's northern Mississippi home) debuted at #1 on the Billboard Blues Chart, and it's remained on the chart ever since. NPR's Morning Edition ran a 7-minute feature on release day. Tastemaker UK magazine MOJO named 662 the #1 Best Blues Album of 2021 calling it "an exceptional album" filled with "astonishing creativity." Influential website Under The Radar said, "Kingfish is one of the torchbearers for the blues." On radio, 662 quickly became one of the biggest contemporary blues crossover albums of the year, receiving massive airplay on NPR-affiliated stations and SiriusXM. 662 also topped numerous radio format charts, cracking the top 20 on the North American College and Community Chart (and hitting #1 on its Blues Chart). It spent three months at #1 on the influential Living Blues Radio Chart, and also excelled on both Nielsen's Adult Album Alternative Chart and The Americana Music Association’s Singles and Album Charts. Christone “Kingfish” Ingram will celebrate the release of his dynamic new Alligator Records album, 662, with live performances at The Coach House in San Juan Capistrano on Friday, September 10 and the El Rey Theater in Los Angeles on­­­­ Wednesday, September 15, 2021. Ingram’s new headlining tour, entitled, “Christone “Kingfish” Ingram Presents 662: Juke Joint Live,” will take the 22-year-old guitarist, vocalist and songwriter across the U.S. and Europe beginning July 2021 and going into February 2022. 

 

662 is the next chapter in the still-unfolding story of the Clarksdale, Mississippi native. Ingram describes 662  (the number is northern Mississippi's telephone area code) as “a presentation of my life in and away from the Delta.” The album overflows with hard-hitting original songs, jaw-dropping guitar work and deep, soul-possessed vocals. Ingram recently won the 2021 Living Blues Award for Most Outstanding Musician (Guitar). He also won two 2021 Blues Music Awards (for Guitarist Of The Year and Contemporary Blues Male Artist Of The Year) in addition to the five he won last year. In February 2021, Ingram guest hosted Spotify’s popular In The Name Of The Blues playlist, which featured him talking about and sharing some of his favorite songs. Rolling Stone declared, “Kingfish is one of the most exciting young guitarists in years, with a sound that encompasses B.B. 662 was co-written and produced (as was Kingfish) by Grammy-winner Tom Hambridge. It features 13 songs displaying many sides of Ingram’s dynamic personality, as well as his one-of-a-kind guitar and vocal skills. The first single,  662’s title track, made its worldwide premiere on SiriusXM’s B.B. King's Bluesville channel on May 10. The song immediately became the #1 Most Added Single on the influential BDS AAA (Adult Album Alternative) Indicator Radio Chart.  Guitar World, who in 2020 named Kingfish one of the top 30 guitarists in the world, said, “On 662 , Ingram takes things all the way back to the place that shaped him, his hometown of Clarksdale, Mississippi. Anchoring the song with a hot-rodded, Delta–by-way- of-Chuck Berry riff, and punctuating the proceedings with sweet touches of high-gain, fleet-fingered blues guitar glory, Ingram gives a perfect tribute to the birthplace of the blues, showing all the while that the genre is still incredibly vital.”

Since the release of Kingfish , Ingram has quickly become the defining blues voice of his generation. From Clarksdale, Mississippi to stages around the world, the young musician has already headlined two national tours (Fish Grease I & II) and performed with friends including Vampire Weekend, Jason Isbell and Buddy Guy (with whom he appeared on Austin City Limits ). He was interviewed by Sir Elton John on his Apple Music podcast Rocket Hour, and recently released a duet with Bootsy Collins. In January 2021, Ingram was simultaneously on the covers of both Guitar World and  DownBeat magazines, and graced the cover of Living Blues in late 2020. NPR Music  says Ingram’s playing is “astounding…it’s almost like he's singing through the guitar.”

On 662, Ingram creates contemporary blues that speaks to his generation and beyond, delivering the full healing power of the music. No Depression  calls Ingram, “a young bluesman with an ancient soul and a large presence in the here-and-now.” Living Blues says, “By any measure, Kingfish is one of the brightest new stars of his generation.”

While music festivals and countless venues have been cancelling upcoming dates in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak, The Coach House opted to keep its doors open for Buddy Guy's highly-anticipated performance on Thursday night (March 12, 2020).

I'm not alone in praying I didn't jeopardize my future health spending time in a crowded concert venue in the wake of the growing crisis. But one thing for sure: Guy's searing performance at the San Juan Capistrano, California venue was memorable and not to be missed. In recent years the world has sadly witnessed the passing of a parade of Chicago blues greats ranging from James Cotton and Etta James to B.B. King. Now 83, Guy is likely the last top-tier ambassador for the musical style that influenced an endless stream of rock artists including the Rolling Stones, Joe Bonamassa, Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton.

For more than 90 minutes on Thursday, the 83-year-old Louisiana native delivered an inspired lesson in the power of not only the blues, but life itself. His performance was a mix of riveting electric blues and first-rate storytelling. Indeed, as he noted at one point, he grew up on a farm in (Lettsworth) Louisiana and lived in a home without running water or electricity. 

There is an exuberance in Guy's singing and dynamic guitar playing at odds with the challenges he faced in his boyhood. In fact, I have seen few concerts over the years where the headliner smiled as much as Guy did throughout his show at the Coach House.

When Guy took the stage with his four-man backing band, he launched into the defiant blues rocker "Damn Right, I've Got the Blues," the title cut from his Grammy-winning 1991 album. Guy offered up plenty of his blazing fret work on his Fender guitar, and the seven-minute opener was bolstered by Chicago blues great Marty Sammon on keyboards.

The night's setlist provided both an introduction and an exploration of Chicago-styled blues and many of classic rock's greats influenced by the style. Guy's rich baritone vocals and the band's muscular approach (including an extended showcase for the band's second guitarist, Ric Hall) made for a mighty take on Willie Dixon's "I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man." Another Dixon cover, "I Just Want to Make Love to You," was launched with Guy unleashing joyful noise on his instrument.

No Guy performance would be complete without a heavy dose of fun, as evidenced by a playful take on the Bobby Rush classic "Chicken Heads." 

A poignant version of John Hiatt's "Feels Like Rain" was one of this writer's favorite selections of the night. Guy is known for his influential and explosive guitar and vocals, but this number (the title cut off his eighth album, released in 1993) allowed the artist to offer up soulful vocals – including a tender falsetto – and tender work on his guitar. He also mined that emotional corner of his sonic universe with the probing "Drowning on Dry Land," a song introduced with a nuanced solo by Guy. Later he quieted the crowd with his timeless original "Skin Deep."

Guy is renowned for his ability to mimic other guitar greats, recreating their signature styles without abandoning his own. That was clear when he and his band took on bits of tracks from the likes of B.B. King, Jimi Hendrix, John Lee Hooker and Cream during his performance.

Opening the show was Buddy Guy Band drummer Tom Hambridge (accompanied by the aforementioned Marty Sammon on keyboards). Hambridge is a talented percussionist, lead vocalist and songwriter. The two-time Grammy winner's songs were often witty with the ability to instantly grab the attention of the audience. His blues rocker "The Fixer," Chicago blues-styled "Blues Been Mighty Good To Me," bouncy "Bluz Crazy" and crowd pleasing "Upside of Lonely" were all sure-fire songs included in his 30-minute set.

Less than three months after headlining nearby Doheny Blues Festival in Dana Point, blues great Buddy Guy was back in Orange County, CA on Thursday night, Aug. 9, 2018 playing before a packed but decidedly more intimate audience at The Coach House in San Juan Capistrano.

For 90 wonderful minutes the Louisiana native — who celebrated his 82nd birthday on July 30 — delivered on the promise that is the defiant title of his latest album, the newly-issued The Blues is Alive and Well (Read my review of that album RCA Records release here). And since the passing of Guy's friend, B.B. King in May 2015, Guy has been widely acknowledged as the genre's most significant living champion.

Guy strolled on stage just after 9:15 p.m, his lead guitar unleashed as he played a long and fiery solo to kick off the rocking title of his 1991 album "Damn Right I Got the Blues." Backed by his strong four-man band (including drummer Tom Hambridge, who produced Guy's latest LP). The seven-minute reading of the song was bolstered by the energy and enthusiasm of the crowd, cheering on Guy with every note he sang and articulated via his electric guitar.

Guy, who had a profound influence on everyone from Jimi Hendrix and Jeff Beck to Stevie Ray Vaughan, continues to perform with the same fire he exhibited at the beginning of his career. His joyful and playful spirit came through everywhere, whether using body language or bantering with individual members of the crowd. He seemingly fed off the audience's spirit, using sing-alongs to further bridge the divide between band and concertgoers.

After playing a rousing cover of "I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man" (a hit for Muddy Waters written by Willie Dixon), Guy mused that he has a new record but it can't be heard on commercial radio. "I do make albums," he said sarcastically. 

Indeed, the proof was in several masterful cuts from The Blues is Alive and Well he played. The crowd-pleasing "Cognac" (which features Keith Richards and Jeff Beck on the studio version) with some of his most forceful lead guitar work of the night was followed by a cover of his late friend Sonny Boy Williamson's "Nine Below Zero." The latter in particular was a beautiful Chicago blues jaunt, with Guy at times using his guitar to tenderly enhance his vocals with subtle fills while other times ratcheting up the dynamics to an explosive level.

There were plenty of other highlights to come including using a drum stick to tap on the neck of his guitar, and utterly thrilled the house when he took an extended walk through the crowd   during "Someone Else Is Step-in' In (Slippin' Out, Slippin' In)." As if the goodwill he generated during that journey wasn't enough, the call-and-response with the crowd ("While you were slippin' out" he sang, with crowd lustily singing back "Someone else was slippin' in!") was a fun way to cap the track.

He was then joined on stage by Quinn Sullivan, a well-known fixture on Guy's tours. Only 19, Sullivan has been playing professionally since 2006 (when he was a mere age of 7!). Having first played on stage with Guy during a performance at the Zeiterion Theater in New Bedford, Massachusetts in 2007, Sullivan is now the primary opening act at Guy's performances. 

On Thursday night, Sullivan performed a 50-minute set to open the night (he was also backed by Guy's touring four-man group), and then joined Guy for the closing of the main set. 

This part of the night was fun to be sure, including a ferocious and freewheeling take on Cream's "Strange Brew," which served as a great bookend to a terrific take on Eric Clapton's "Let It Rain" performed during Sullivan's opening set.

Buddy Guy has a number of upcoming concert dates scheduled, including a concert tonight (Aug. 10) at The Canyon in Agoura Hills, CA; at The Rose in Pasadena, CA on Aug. 11, and at Humphreys Concerts by the Bay in San Diego, CA on Aug. 14.

The recipient of the 2015 Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, Buddy Guy’s incredible career spans over 50 years with just as many albums released. Career highlights include 7 Grammy Awards, 37 Blues Music Awards, Kennedy Center Honors, NARM Chairman’s Award for Sustained Creative Achievement, Billboard Music Awards' Century Award for distinguished artistic development, Presidential National Medal of Arts, and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to name a few.
