LOS ANGELES, CA (October 11, 2021) – Multi-Grammy Award-winning Rock and Roll Hall of Fame guitarist Carlos Santana has released the fourth song off his star-studded, masterful new album, Blessings and Miracles (out via BMG on October 15), a collaboration with acclaimed Grammy-winning musician Chris Stapleton, who also produced the track, on the soul-enriching “Joy.”

Spend a few minutes around Carlos Santana, and you’re bound to hear the word “joy” more than a few times, so it’s only fitting that the album’s fourth song, which teams the guitarist with Stapleton, is called “Joy.”

 

It’s a marvel that unfolds almost cinematically – one can envision mountain vistas and expansive plains – blending country, reggae, blues and gospel with a widescreen sing-along chorus. Stapleton is in peak form, plaintive and passionate, and Santana’s guitar playing, each immaculate solo and response, rises to meet him.

 

“I was very intrigued to work with Chris,” Santana says. “We talked on the phone about the Covid situation and how there’s so much fear in the world, and I said, ‘We need to create music as a healing force. We must bring hope and courage and disinfect twisted minds infected with darkness.’ That gave him the ammunition to write such incredible words. Somewhere I said, ‘flying on the wings of angels,’ so it’s a collaboration. And what an incredible song it is. The choir in it – it’s like the Staple Singers.”

 

In addition to “Joy,” the album’s first single “Move,” featuring Rob Thomas and American Authors, Santana’s collaboration “She’s Fire” with Diane Warren and G-Eazy, and the classic “Whiter Shade of Pale” featuring Steve Winwood is available now. 

 

Blessings and Miracles is one of the most ambitious, inspired and magical albums of Santana’s storied career, on which the legendary guitarist aims higher than ever. “The title of this album comes from my belief that we’re born with heavenly powers that allow us to create blessings and miracles,” Santana says. “The world programs you to be unworthy of those gifts, but we have to utilize light, spirit and soul – they’re indestructible and immutable. Those are the three main elements on this album.”

Nearly a half century after the performance featuring Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Joe Higgs, Aston Barrett, Carlton Barrett and Earl "Wya" Lindo was captured via four cameras, the performance is coming to DVD+CD, colored 2LP vinyl, digital and audio CD (the latter format reviewed here) on Sept. 3. The footage was long considered lost until a freelance researcher uncovered a few frames. After more than 20 years, the complete film was found, restored and remastered. A single listen to the audio recording reveals the exhaustive efforts that included a search of archives and storage units in New York, London, San Diego and beyond was worth the effort. Marley is rightfully considered reggae's most influential and important artist; all of the Jamaican artist's strengths as a singer, songwriter, musician and band leader are on display across The Capitol Session '73. Tell me more: Singer-songwriter/composer/virtuoso pianist Nina Simone burst on the world in 1959 with the release of Little Girl Blue. Only 25 at the time, her brilliant debut has been newly remastered and reissued; it is available via vinyl, audio CD and digital platforms. Listening to the timeless album today is still an astonishing experience, all the more impressive when you learn that the 11 tracks on the disc were recorded in a single 14-hour recording session where she was accompanied by Jimmy Bond (bass) and Albert "Tootie" Heath (drums).  While the future Rock and Roll Hall of Famer performs a lone original work on "Little Girl Blue" (the dashing instrumental "Central Park Blues"), her fleet take on Duke Ellington's swinging "Mood Indigo," refined reading of Arthur Hamilton's "He Needs Me," buoyant jazz-meets-Baroque "Love Me or Leave Me" and the classical music-flavored title track — the latter which creatively incorporates the traditional Christmas carol "Good King Wenceslas — all showcase her signature contralto vocals and improvisational talents at the keyboard. Several of her best-known recordings are also on the album; her evocative version of "I Loves You, Porgy" (a major hit at the time of the album's release) and joyful "My Baby Just Cares For Me" are truly remarkable. Tell me more: Toad the Wet Sprocket is back with their first new studio album since 2013 — the 10-track masterwork Starting Now — that also happens to be one of the best new albums I've heard in 2021. The Santa Barbara-spawned heroes don't tinker too much with their signature sound blending folk and alternative rock styles but now that it's 2021 the trio uses its musical voice in the service of songs aimed at the here and now. The events of 2020 and 2021 have made most of us rethink our own lives and the world itself and singer-guitarist Glen Phillips, bassist Dean Dinning and lead guitarist Todd Nichols capture and explore those forces brilliantly on Starting Now. Take "Hold On," where singer Phillips delivers a poignant plea: "I need a little bit of hope, one ray of light / need just enough peace to make it through the night." In the glorious title track Phillips delivers a more hopeful message as he sings: "I've wasted years, won't waste another instant / I fed my fears on things that haven't been yet / Well hope don't mean you sit there, just waiting for the changes / It's fighting for the long shot / It's getting in the trenches." The songs are uniformly strong on "Starting Now." The yearning "Transient Whales," Americana-styled "In the Lantern Light," experimental "Dual Citizen," affecting climate change warning-aimed "Fever" and soulful "Best Of Me" (the latter featuring guest vocalist Michael McDonald) are among my other favorites on the terrific return. Information: ToadTheWetSprocket.com.

Titles: Sweet Rosie Jones; I've Got You on My Mind Again; Tall Dark Stranger (Omnivore Recordings)

Tell me more: Beginning earlier this month and continuing through Oct. 1, Omnivore Recordings is in the midst of reissuing nine albums featuring Buck Owens and His Buckeroos. The albums are being released in their original configurations on audio CD and Digital (in both standard and high resolution); each has been mastered from the original analog tapes by Michael Graves and produced for release by Grammy-winner Cheryl Pawelski, and all feature expanded artwork and new liner notes from Owens biographer Randy Poe. 

One of the reasons Owens was so successful can be heard across the myriad of reissues; his musical approach was straightforward with his signature baritone vocals used to propel songs featuring winning story lines and clever wordplay, catchy vocal choruses ( with two-part vocal harmonies featuring his guitarist Don Rich) and nuanced musicianship from his terrific Buckeroos.Sweet Rosie Jones was the troupe's third album of 1968; 10 of the 12 songs on the set were written or co-written by Owens. The title track, a lovely acoustic ballad, hit number 2 on the country singles chart; the parade of other great cuts on the disc includes the uptempo "Hello Happiness, Goodbye Loneliness," high-flying "If I Had Three Wishes," twangy delight "The Heartaches Have Just Started" and authentic cover of Merle Haggard's "Swinging' Doors." 

Another 1968 release, I've Got You on My Mind Again, featuring outstanding tracks including the catchy "Let the World Keep On a Turnin'" (a hit duet with Buck's son Buddy Alan) and tuneful "I Wanna Be Wild and Free" and "Sing a Happy Song." Originally released in September of 1969, Tall Dark Stranger, features the album's enticing hit title track that was a number 1 on the singles chart as well as the mournful "White Satin Bed (co-written with Gene Price) and captivating "Across This Town and Gone." Eric Clapton releases new protest song 'This Has Gotta Stop’

Acclaimed singer-songwriter/guitar great Eric Clapton has just released the protest song "This Has Gotta Stop." In the song, Clapton protests continuing lockdowns and restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic. 

""Enough is enough / I can't take this BS any longer" he sings early in the song. "I've been around a long, long time / Seen it all and I'm used to being free."

The reggae-styled track was penned by Clapton, produced by his long-time producing partner Simon Climie and features Clapton along with Sonny Emery (drums), Nathan East (bass), and Sharon White (backing vocals).

Clapton's stance has been clear since he joined forces with Van Morrison in December 2020 on the song "Stand and Deliver" to protest the British government's restrictions related to the coronavirus.

Tell me more: In celebration of the 75th birthday of the late reggae great Bob Marley, Eagle Records and the Bob Marley Estate have released Uprising Live! on vinyl for the first time. The classic recording captures a performance on the Jamaica native's "Uprising Tour" that ran through Europe from May to July 1980 with five additional dates in the U.S. in September of that year. Sadly, it was Marley's final tour before his death from cancer in May 1981. He was only 36. Uprising Live! was recorded at Dortmund's Westfalenhalle on June 13, 1980 and is a must have for fans of the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer. After a short set featuring his backing trio I Threes (Rita Marley, Marcia Griffiths, Judy Mowatt), Marley is front and center to perform inspired and riveting versions of many of his most beloved anthems. The intoxicating likes of "Natural Mystic," "Could You Be Loved," "No Woman No Cry," "Exodus," "Redemption Song" and "Get Up, Stand Up" are among the galvanizing performances showcased on the title. Tell me more: From the rousing rocker "You Wreck Me" and gorgeous ballad "Crawling Back to You" to the shimmering Byrds-flavored "A Higher Place," the material across Tom Petty's Wildflowers & All the Rest reveals a sophistication, ambition and unadulterated diversity that is a reminder how great the 1994 album Wildflowers was. The expanded Wildflowers & All the Rest includes all 25 songs originally envisioned to be part of a double album; standouts on "All The Rest" (disc 2) include the dreamy "Something Could Happen," melodious "Leave Virginia Alone," Southern fried blues rocker "Confusion Wheel," Americana swoop "Harry Green" and genre-busting "Climb That Hill." Tell me more: The death of Little Richard on May 9, 2020 only increased interest in one of rock and roll's most influential founding fathers. Southern Child, the rocker's shelved third album for Reprise that was recorded following 1971's acclaimed King of Rock and Roll, is a predominantly country-rock effort and was unheard until the tracks appeared on a long-out-of-print label retrospective in 2005. The album was recorded in Los Angeles in spring of 1972; the LP was then mixed, mastered and handed to the label. However, Reprise instead opted to release The Second Coming in its place. Now Southern Child will be released on yellow vinyl on Friday, Nov. 27 (four bonus tracks are included on the audio CD version that follows on Dec. 4). The album is fascinating to be sure, and there are plenty of great songs here. The nuanced "If You Pick Her Too Hard (She Comes Out of Tune)," pretty "Ain't No Tellin'," uptempo "Southern Child," tender "In The Name" and zealous "Over Yonder" are among the country-flavored standouts on the set. Elsewhere the Macon, Georgia native tears it up on the funk-tinged rock 'n' soul original "Burning Up With Love," genre tossing "Last Year's Race Horse (Can't Run in This Year's Race)," and '50s-mining "I Get a Little Lonely" and bonus instrumental cut "Sneak the Freak." Tell me more: Singer-songwriter Bruce Sudano's latest album Spirals Vol. 2...Time & The Space In Between is a follow-up to Spirals Vol. 1...Not a Straight Line to be Found released earlier this year; it is a true celebration of bringing real life to songs that entice on first listen. A talented singer, songwriter and keyboardist, Sudano's songs capture his observations of the intimate and universal, unfolding with a rich variety of styles. "It Don't Take Much" is an uptempo jewel, while the jazz-flavored "Morning Kisses" is wistful and bolstered by Sudano's top-tier lead vocals. The winning acoustic guitar-anchored "The Promise" looks at the challenges of a relationship with an uncanny depth and beauty. Tell me more: Kindred Spirits marks the second full-length album from Nashville-based blues rock duo Larkin Poe issued this year. Larkin Poe has followed up the release of their June 2020 LP Self Made Man with their first-ever covers album. Kindred Spirits is filled with familiar songs reworked to perfectly fit the signature style of Megan and Rebecca Lovell in sparse versions that reveal vast emotional reaches via stirring arrangements. "Nights in White Satin" takes listeners on an otherworldly journey; singer Rebecca Lovell's soaring vocals are mirrored by Megan Lovell's deft lap steel slide guitar work. Equally stirring is their take on Phil Collins' "In The Air Tonight," a Southern gothic sortie bolstered by the sisters' artful harmonies. The siblings actually best several of the originals covered on the disc, notably Post Malone's "Take What You Want." Their masterful reworkings of Bo Diddley's "Who Do You Love," Neil Young's "Rockin' in the Free World" and Elton John's "Crocodile Rock" further certify the power of this well-crafted set.
