Sights and Sounds abound on new Blu-ray/DVD titles

Music lovers who enjoy watching top-tier performances via concert films, TV specials and music-minded movies have a handful of great new titles to add to their home library collections.

Artist: Santana
Title: Santana Live At US Festival (Shout! Factory)
You might like if you enjoy: Santana, the US Festival
Tell me more: There have been many highlights in the career of groundbreaking artist Carlos Santana dating back to his legendary performance at Woodstock in August 1969. But his appearance at the fabled US Festival in Southern California on Sept. 4, 1982 is clearly among the standouts of recorded live appearances for his Rock and Roll Hall of Fame troupe Santana. The fast-moving set (Santana Live At US Festival) featured the master guitarist and his talented seven-member ensemble performing potent versions of his most beloved material including "Black Magic Woman/Gypsy Queen," "Oye Como Va," and a cover of the Zombies' 1964 hit "She's Not There," the latter that segues into his own "Marbles." Keyboardist Herbie Hancock guests on the performance of "Incident at Neshabur." Santana also featured several new tracks off his August 1982 album Shangó including "Nowhere To Run" and "Hold On." Bonus features include additional interview segments with Carlos Santana. Santana Live At US Festival is set for release on Friday, Sept. 6, 2019. Information: shoutfactory.com.

Artist: Queen + Béjart
Title: Queen + Béjart: Ballet for Life (Eagle Vision)
You might like if you enjoy: Queen, Freddie Mercury, ballet
Tell me more: The magical connection between British rock quartet Queen and opera was confirmed with the success of the global 1975 hit "Bohemian Rhapsody." Queen's connection with classical music and the arts was further confirmed with the creation of "Ballet for Life," a collaboration between Queen, fashion great Gianni Versace and the late visionary choreographer Maurice Béjart first performed in January 1997. On Friday, Sept. 6, 2019, fans of Queen and ballet will want to get Queen + Béjart: Ballet for Life, a compelling performance videotaped in June 1997 that fuses the music of Queen (along with several pieces composed by Mozart) with a performance by Béjart Ballet Lausanne. The theme of the dance choreography deals with the cycle of life with the tragic death of Freddie Mercury and Béjart's renowned principal dancer Jorge Donn  both of whom died of AIDS. There are several essential bonus features on the collection including a "Making Of" documentary from 1997; a deluxe edition of the title comes in a beautiful 36-page hardback photo book featuring photos from "Ballet for Life." Queen + Béjart: Ballet for Life will be available on DVD, Blu-ray and digital video. Information: www.eagle-rock.com.

Artists: Loretta Lynn, Johnny Cash, Glen Campbell, Miranda Lambert, Carrie Underwood, more
Title: CMA Awards Live: Greatest Moments 1968-2015 (Time Life)
You might like if you enjoy: Traditional and modern country music, John Denver, Kenny Chesney, Eric Church, Clint Black, Luke Bryan
Tell me more: Country music aficionados will want to run out and get the outstanding CMA Awards Live: Greatest Moments 1968-2015, which offers up dozens and dozens of incredible performances originally aired as part of the Country Music Assocation's "CMA Awards" broadcast on television dating back to 1968. In addition to 127 country music classics that play out across 11 hours of footage, the 10-disc DVD set includes newly-produced bonus interviews and a 44-page collectible memory book filled with colorful images and important details about the CMA telecasts. The highlights abound across the set, stretching back to poignant turns from the late, great likes of Johnny Cash ("Folsom Prison Blues"), Glen Campbell ("By The Time I Get To Phoenix," "Rhinestone Cowboy") and Merle Haggard ("Okie From Muskogee") all the way through modern-day hit makers Brooks & Dunn ("Boot Scootin' Boogie"), Shania Twain ("Any Man of Mine," "I'm Gonna Getcha Good!") Keith Urban ("Somewhere in My Car"), and Carrie Underwood ("Jesus, Take the Wheel," "Before He Cheats").  Information: www.timelife.com.

Artist: Jimmy Cliff
Title: The Harder They Come (Shout! Factory)
You might like if you enjoy: Reggae music, Jimmy Cliff, director Perry Henzel
Tell me more: Reggae has seldom been featured in motion pictures beyond cliche and caricature. That changed with the release of director Perry Henzel's groundbreaking 1972 film The Harder They Come starring legendary artist Jimmy Cliff. In the film — newly remastered and reissued courtesy of a glorious collector's edition — Cliff stars as Ivan Martin, an aspiring singer hoping to make his mark in the music world. Looking back in time at this amazing film is to see a flick that works as a dramatic crime tale as well as an early celebration and showcase for Jamaican reggae that was in its infancy on the world stage. Bonus features and extras abound on this must-have Blu-ray title, including a gorgeous restoration of Perry Henzel's subsequent film No Place Like Home (which was also shot in 1970s Jamaica, but was believed long lost). Anyone who is a fan of Jimmy Cliff, reggae music or '70s film will want to pick up this superb title that picks up the energy and ambiance of Jamaica in the era. Information: shoutfactory.com.

LESLIE WEST AND PROVOGUE RECORDS TO STAGE RARE IN-STORE APPEARANCES
TO COINCIDE WITH STILL CLIMBING RELEASE

West Confirms 11/01 at NJ's Vintage Vinyl (7PM), 11/02 at Long Island, NY's
Looney Tunes (2PM), and Performance At New York City's Iridium on 11/13
OCTOBER 29TH RELEASE SEES WEST LOOKING FORWARD
JOINED BY JONNY LANG, JOHNNY WINTER, MARK TREMONTI AND DEE SNIDER
New York, NY -- Leslie West will stage two rare in-store appearances that coincide with the release of his upcoming studio album Still Climbing on October 29 via Provogue Records / Mascot Label Group.  The guitarist will appear at Vintage Vinyl in Fords, NJ on November 1 at 7PM (51 Lafayette Rd - 732-225-7717) and at Looney Tunes in West Babylon, NY on November 2 at 2PM (31 Brookvale Avenue - 631-587-7722).  West will host a question and answer with those assembled, and conduct a signing of Still Climbing.
On November 13, West will appear at New York City's Iridium for one-set at 8PM.  For more information: http://theiridium.com/events/1962/leslie-west-with-opener-arielle-verinis-one-set-only-800-pm/ or visit West's new web site that launches today with a premiere of the lyric video created for "Dyin' Since The Day I was Born": www.lesliewestofficial.com.
Originality, excitement, honesty and survival are all part of what makes a legend, and those qualities ripple through every song on West’s upcoming release.  The disc is also a testimonial to the strength and durability of West’s artistry.  Born October 22, 1945, as he approaches the age of 68, West has packed some of the most soulful and searing vocal performances of his half-century career into these eleven tracks, and his guitar has never sounded more massive or riff-propelled.
Following the success of Unusual Suspects, he approached the new release with vision of tying the albums together.  “This record is a sequel to Unusual Suspects, where I had friends of mine that include Slash, Zakk Wylde, Steve Lukather, Joe Bonamassa and Billy Gibbons come to the studio and play,” West explains.  This time Jonny Lang, Johnny Winter, Twisted Sister’s Dee Snider and Alter Bridge / Creed’s Mark Tremonti do the honors. “What’s different on Still Climbing is that I wanted my guitars to sound as big as I look. So I used four of my Dean signature model guitars with my Mountain of Tone humbucking pickups. I plugged them into my Blackstar amps — no pedals — and turned them up loud and raw, and what you hear is exactly what I did in the studio.  These Blackstar amps deliver everything I need without 'confidence' pedals.  I played one of the early tracks we recorded for Slash, and he said, ‘That is as heavy as it gets.’"
West, who ascended rock’s Mt. Olympus with his band Mountain in a historic performance at 1969’s Woodstock festival, accomplished all of that despite a life threatening battle with diabetes that cost him most of his right leg in 2011, just after his previous Mascot Label Group release Unusual Suspects was recorded.  "I’m lucky it wasn’t one of my hands or I’d be screwed,” West says with his customary candor.  “It was a difficult struggle, and after the amputation I didn’t know whether I’d ever want to or be able to perform again.  But a month later I played at the Rock ‘n’ Roll Fantasy Camp in New York City, and I heard my guitar on stage and that was it. I knew I had to keep going.”
West has been performing since 1965, when he fronted the soul-fired Vagrants in his native New York City.  Rolling Stone placed him at #66 on their list of the “100 Greatest Guitarists.”   His repertoire continues to be relevant with enduring appeal to this day as top selling rap recordings are built around samples from “Long Red,” which appeared on the Mountain album. Jay-Z tapped the tune for his 2004 mega-smash “99 Problems.” So did Kanye West, for  "Barry Bonds" and “The Glory," and Common’s “The People,” along with others.  Recently, Lana Del Rey sampled West's voice and features it in the beginning, middle and end of the worldwide smash "Born To Die."  For Still Climbing, , West re-recorded "Long Red" with his brother and former Vagrants-mate Larry West on bass.  He offers, “It was time for me to let people hear that song the way I do it now.  I used a B-3 organ on it again, but this time it has a lot more balls."
Balls, guts, heart — more words that are part of West’s legend and describe the roaring crescendos and deep emotional roots of Still Climbing — and West himself.  “You know, when it comes to talent, we don’t all move at the same rate of speed,” West muses. “Some people start at the top of their game and after 10 or 20 years you wonder what the hell happened to them. I like to joke that the older I get the better I used to be, but after giving up drugs and smoking, my voice can hit notes that I never could reach before.   I’m thankful for that.”

Inbox Update: Faster Horses Festival, Johnny Marr, Morrissey and more!

Happy Presidents' Day everybody. Here is a brief overview on what's happening...

Jason Aldean, Dierks Bentley and Luke Bryan will headline at the first-ever Faster Horses Festival, a three-day music festival coming to Brooklyn, Michigan, July 19-21. Sounds kind of like the Stagecoach Festival that has been so successful in Indio, CA. You can read more details here.

Former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr has a fantastic solo album (The Messenger) coming out on Feb. 26. You can stream it now on Rolling Stone via this link.

Speaking of The Smiths, Morrissey has cancelled a string of concert dates this month. Billboard has an update on the famed singer. Lets hope the former Smiths frontman gets well soon.

Music history is filled with examples where artists bust out of the gate with what ultimately proves to be their best album (The Stone Roses, Boston, The Cars, The Flying Burrito Brothers and The Outfield immediately come to mind). But what about bands whose sophomore proved to be their peak? Check out this article titled "20 Artists Whose Second Album Was Their Best." I don't necessarily agree with all of the author's picks (The Shins, for example), but it's compelling stuff...

Jason Aldean dominates Go Fest in Irvine

My review was originally posted on the Orange County Register site on Sunday, Sept. 30, 2012. A special "thank you" to photographer Kelly A. Swift for the use of her great image of Jason Aldean taken at the show.

Jason Aldean dominates Go Fest

Jason Aldean in Irvine on Sept. 29, 2012.
Those hoping for an absorbing, mesmerizing concert experience at Go Fest 2012 were in the wrong place Saturday (Sept. 29, 2012). But if you were looking for decidedly over-the-top musical performances, a place to pound away beers, get in a bit of line dancing and check out all the other guys and gals, Verizon Wireless Amphitheater was definitely the place to be.

With a full slate of seven performers – and headliner Jason Aldean noting that this was actually just another stop on his ongoing tour behind 2010’s My Kinda Party – the fifth staging of Go Country 105’s Irvine event recalled Indio’s annual Stagecoach festival. All that was missing were the huge tents featuring alternative country and Americana artists.

The capacity crowd was mostly on its feet for both Aldean and Luke Bryan, further creating an energetic atmosphere for the last three hours of this seven-hour shebang.

Not surprisingly, Aldean was the strongest talent on the bill; the Macon native and his five-man group are among the most successful acts at fusing modern country with an arena-ready rock sound. While Aldean’s power ballads (notably “Big Green Tractor”) connect him to heroes like George Strait and Alabama, his upbeat songs, stripped of pedal steel and other traditional accoutrements, could fit well on a Bon Jovi album.

“Tattoos on This Town,” “Crazy Town,” “Fly Over States” and “Take a Little Ride” (the latter from his next album, Night Train) also boasted that oversized assault. But one of the finest moments in his 75-minute set was the title track from his coming disc (due Oct. 16), a mid-tempo and well-received song with an immediately infectious melody. He also closed the night out with a rousing version of “Hicktown.”

Fellow Georgia-born star Bryan delighted the crowd as well, although his seemingly contrived approach to performing (heavy on shout-outs like “what’s up, California?” and “where are all my beer drinkers?”) cemented the perception that his songs are secondary to the party environment he fosters. His best songs showcased catchy singalong choruses (“Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye,” “Country Man”), while his hour-long set ended with the crowd-pleasing “Country Girl (Shake It for Me),” bolstered by a “Billie Jean” disco beat.

Opening the action on the main stage, singer-guitarist Rachel Farley delivered roughly 20 minutes of lively new country but had trouble connecting to the crowd because of such unknown material. Dee Jay Silver, spinning a mix of country, rock and urban hits between acts on the big stage, pleased with propulsive mixes of Boston, AC/DC, Aerosmith, the Outfield and others.

Of the three acts that launched the bash on the side stage, singer-songwriter Matt Rogers impressed most. His half-hour, six-song set for those who arrived early showcased the Season 3 American Idol finalist’s rich baritone vocals and solid tunes. Highlights: his beautiful ballad “Coming Home” and the electrifying “Round Up.”
