New Music: Phil Lynott and Thin Lizzy, Maple Mars, The Zombies

In this column, I highlight three outstanding new titles.

Artists:
Phil Lynott, Thin Lizzy
Titles: "Phil Lynott Songs For While I'm Away"; "Thin Lizzy The Boys Are Back In Town Live At The Sydney Opera House October 1978" (Mercury Studios)
You might like if you enjoy: Thin Lizzy, Gary Moore, music documentary films
Tell me more: Regardless if you are a hardcore or casual fan, or know very little about Irish singer-songwriter-bassist Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy fame, a wonderful new dual title marks the perfect chance to learn more about the groundbreaking artist. Available as a Blu-ray+DVD+CD (reviewed here) or as a 2xDVD+CD, Mercury Studios' release of "Phil Lynott Songs For While I'm Away" and "Thin Lizzy The Boys Are Back In Town Live At The Sydney Opera House October 1978" is one of the year's most important classic rock-minded titles"Phil Lynott Songs For While I'm Away" is a compelling feature-length documentary that explores the rich life and music of Lynott, a black boy raised in Dublin who became one of the Emerald Isle's most beloved music artists. Written and directed by Emer Reynolds, the film uses film footage, new and historic interviews, and Lynott's memorable songs to chronicle his life (sadly, he passed away at the age of 36 in January 1986). Among the notables who share insights into Lynott are bassist Adam Clayton (U2), Huey Lewis (Huey Lewis & The News), James Hatfield (Metallica), members of Thin Lizzy, and Lynott's wife and two daughters. "Thin Lizzy The Boys Are Back In Town Live At The Sydney Opera House October 1978" was previously released via VHS, Laserdisc and DVD, but the new version on this title presents the concert with cleaned up video and remixed audio from multi-track recordings. Additionally, five songs from the performance never before seen are among the bonus features. Thin Lizzy is seen in a rousing performance with Lynott, guitarists Scott Gorham and Gary Moore and drummer Mark Nauseef delivering powerful versions of "Jailbreak," "Bad Reputation," "Waiting For An Alibi," "The Boys Are Back In Town" and other winning originals. Maple Mars
Title: Someone's Got To Listen (Big Stir Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Matthew Sweet, Fountains of Wayne, The Move
Tell me more: Maple Mars is back! The Los Angeles-based quartet has released Someone's Got To Listen, a terrific 10-track effort that also marks the outfit's first new full-length album since 2010's Galaxyland. Loaded with an intoxicating mix of psychedelic rock, tuneful songcraft and artful arrangements, Someone's Got To Listen extols '60s influences while tapping into modern day heft. There is truly no filler on the outstanding disc, which boasts one must hear original after another. My faves include the irresistible opener "Useless Information," luxurious "Gliding," soaring harmonies-adorned "Teenage Dream," nuanced "Goodbye California," and driving "Silver Craft" (bolstered by some fantastic guitar work). The ambitious closer "Redemption" caps the outstanding return. Maple Mars' talented lineup includes Rick Hromadka (lead vocals, guitar, keyboards), Steve Berns (guitar), Ron Pak (drums, vocals) and Joe Giddings (bass, vocals). Someone's Got To Listen is set for release on Friday, July 22. Information: BigStirRecords.com

Artist:
The Zombies
Title: The Zombies - Live From Studio Two (Red House Records)
You might like if you enjoy: The Zombie
Tell me more: Concertgoers attending any of The Zombies forthcoming live dates  including the highly anticipated appearance at Pappy and Harriet's in Pioneertown on July 21  will want to pick up a copy of The Zombies - Live From Studio Two, a CD+DVD release that features the group's live performance captured at Abbey Road Studios in London on Sept. 18, 2021. The only performance staged by the British rock group in 2021, the 90-minute performance shines as both a concert film and audio-only affair. At the Sept. 18, 2021 concert, the quintet thrilled with a mix of enduring classics, artful covers, deep cuts as well as the live premiere of new songs set to be included on an as-of-yet untitled album likely to be released sometime this year. Led by founding members Rod Argent (keyboards, vocals) and Colin Blunstone (lead vocals), the group also includes guitarist-backing vocalist Tom Toomey, drummer Steve Rodford and bassist-backing vocalist Søren Koch. The five members have a strong chemistry and together display top-tier musicianship and resplendent harmonies bringing the Zombies signature masterful style blending classic rock, baroque pop, jazz and blues to life throughout their 90-minute performance. Blunstone's vocals defy time, and his soaring tenor remains a true wonder. The release is also available for purchase on the group's website. Information: TheZombiesMusic.com

What’s Going On – Live At The Isle Of Wight Festival tells the story of Eire's seminal rock band Taste. Formed in Cork, Ireland in 1966 by Rory GallagherTaste had a brief but influential career, releasing two studio albums in 1969 and 1970 and disbanding shortly after their legendary appearance at the 1970 Isle Of Wight Festival -- the centerpiece of this film.

The core of What’s Going On is the band’s performance at the festival on August 28th. Encapsulated within a documentary on the history and importance of Taste, the film features contributions from Rory’s brother andTaste road manager Donal Gallagher along with Brian May (Queen), The Edge (U2), Bob Geldof and renowned guitarist Larry Coryell.

Taste’s performance at the festival was so well received that when Jimi Hendrix was asked “How does it feel to be the best guitarist in the world,” he replied, “I don’t know, why don’t you go and ask Rory Gallagher?”

The original 1970 footage was shot by Academy Award winning director Murray Lerner. The 16mm film has been restored and the sound remixed for this 2015 version of What’s Going On – Live At The Isle Of Wight Festival 1970, which includes all the tracks on the original 1971 Polydor LP plus several additional tracks.  Bonus features include three tracks from the German TV series Beat Club: “If The Day Was Any Longer”, “It’s Happened Before, It’ll Happen Again” and “Morning Sun”.  Additionally there are three conceptual music videos for the tracks “I’ll Remember,” “What’s Going On,” and “Born On The Wrong Side Of Time”.

Rory Gallagher would go on to enjoy an acclaimed and highly successful solo career.  Johnny Marr said, “The man who changed my musical life was Rory Gallagher, I picked up a guitar because of him.”

The electrifying What’s Going On – Live At The Isle Of Wight Festival 1970 is an early example of Rory’s justified reputation as the ultimate live performer.

Greg Lake's Legendary 1981 Performance at the Hammersmith Odeon in London to be issued On CD & Vinyl

Purple Pyramid Records will be releasing legendary Greg Lake's live album from the Hammersmith Odeon in London, November 5, 1981, featuring guitar hero Gary Moore on CD & vinyl! The concert recording features ELP and King Crimson classic tracks such as “Lucky Man”, “Karn Evil 9”, “21st Century Schizoid Man” and “In The Court of The Crimson King”, as well as songs from his critically acclaimed first solo album from 1981. As a founding member of King Crimson and Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Greg Lake has been a major force in music for over 40 years. He has long been considered a legendary voice and musical powerhouse whose impact changed the landscape of rock and roll. Many simply refer to him as “The Voice”.

The Greg Lake Band made its live debut on one of the biggest stages available to it, the annual Reading Festival in England in August 1981. Much of the set was new to the audience – Greg's first solo album would not be released for another month. But the band received a wild reception regardless, and there were enough old favorites on display to ensure the fans remained happy…including the show opener “Fanfare for the Common Man,” truly one of the most effective showstoppers ever to have opened a concert.

The band's full tour kicked off in October. Purposefully, Lake demanded smaller venues, the theaters and universities that truly represented a refreshing change from the monster domes he'd visited the last time he hit the road in 1977 with ELP. The string of shows launched in Wales, at Aberystwyth University, then moved onto Cardiff University, Dunstable Queensway Hall, Norwich University, Liverpool Royal Court Theatre, Newcastle Mayfair, Glasgow University, Edinburgh Playhouse, Sheffield Lyceum, University of Kent Canterbury, Birmingham Odeon, Leicester Polytechnic, Bournemouth Winter Gardens, Exeter University, St Austell Cornwall Coliseum, Crawley Leisure Centre and, finally, London's Hammersmith Odeon.

It was not an extravagant performance - no lasers, no levitating keyboards, no priceless Persian carpets. The myths and legends that surrounded ELP when they toured were all firmly locked away. The Greg Lake Band toured like a band, and on stage they simply took up their positions and played. Brilliantly.

That last date on the tour is where this disc was recorded, in front of 2,000 fans who now had every note of Greg's new album memorized, and the rest of the set firmly entrenched in their DNA: the snatch of “Karn Evil 9” that eased out of the opening “Fanfare”; “Love You Too Much,” the song Lake co-wrote with Dylan in what remains another of the tantalizing collaborations of the age; “Retribution Drive” and “The Lie” from Greg Lake. “21st Century Schizoid Man” and “The Court Of The Crimson King,” from Lake’s stint with King Crimson, wrapped up the evening in positively rhapsodic fashion, and, finally, “C'est La Vie,” from ELP's Works. (The version of this track included on the CD is taken from a show in New York City 1981)

“A single night at the tail end of a single tour, alive with promise, bristling with presence. And welcoming back some new friends, too” - Dave Thompson, writer

Tracks:
Medley: Fanfare For The Common Man / Karn Evil 9
Nuclear Attack
The Lie
Retribution Drive
Lucky Man
Parisienne Walkways
You Really Got A Hold On Me
Love You Too Much
21st Century Schizoid Man
In The Court Of The Crimson King
Bonus Track: C'est La Vie (Live in NYC 1981)

Jack Bruce "Rockpalast: The 50th Birthday Concerts" coming to DVD, CD, digital formats on December 2, 2014

The late great Jack Bruce's artistry will be celebrated thanks to an upcoming release to be issued on DVD/CD and other formats on December 2, 2014. Here is the official media release...

Jack Bruce "Rockpalast: The 50th Birthday Concerts"
with Ginger Baker, Bernie Worrell, Gary Moore, Clem Clempson, Mary Reilley, Dick Heckstall-Smith, Simon Phillips, Gary Husband and more

Available on Special Edition DVD/CD, CD/DVD Digipack, DVD,
and Digital Formats on December 2, 2014

It was a late 50th birthday present. Born on May 14th 1943, John Symon Asher (aka Jack Bruce) greeted his notable friends on stage on November 2 and 3 1993 at the E-Werk in Cologne. The Scottish bassist from Bishopbriggs had invited long time companions such as drummer Ginger Baker, saxophonist Dick Heckstall-Smith and guitarist Clem Clempson. The enthusiastic audience had the opportunity to congratulate him with an extraordinary celebration.

In a unique session, Bruce and guests drummer Simon Phillips and pianist Bernie Worrell celebrated jazz, rock, and blues highlights from the holy Cream days as well as songs which Jack had released on his solo records. From Willie Dixon's classic "Spoonful" to the magical ballad "Ships in the Night" with singer Maggie Reilly, the interpretations are distinguished by a rare talent for improvisation and intensity. No one had ever experienced "Sunshine of Your Love" in such an opulent arrangement before: brass instruments, percussions and keyboards. In contrast to this was the intimate "Running Thru Our Hands" with pianist Gary Husband

In this spectrum the extraordinary talent of the multi-instrumentalist, composer, and singer Jack Bruce, who brought his bass to the front row as a solo instrument, can be seen. This ability had made him stand out when he played in other bands with Alexis KornerJohn Mayall, and Manfred Mann at the beginning of the 60s, before forming Cream in 1966. He advanced to become the most important writer in this trio with songs like "I Feel Free," "Politician," and "White Room," which originated from the collaboration with lyricist Pete Brown. This is the first time "White Room" has been released in this version.

The late guitarist Gary Moore also performed on one night, stepping in for Eric Clapton he was truly more than a substitute. The performance at the "Rocklife" concert with Ginger Baker resulted in the 1994 studio album "Around The Next Dream". Other highlights from the birthday bash include the epic "Bird Alone" and "Theme For An Imaginary Western" from Jack Bruce's first 1969 solo album "Songs for a Tailor." This Cologne performance shows an impressive width of a remarkable career. The fantastic lineup underlines the meaning and the value of the two November 1993 evenings Jack Bruce presented.

This box set includes songs which until now have been lying dormant in the WDR archive, adding alternative versions of some songs performed at the concerts. The exuberant "Blues You Can't Lose" as well as the acoustic "Rope Ladder to the Moon" are also to be seen here for the first time. This recording is a legacy of an extraordinary musician, who effortlessly transformed the world by not conforming to one genre and switching between jazz, rock, blues and classical music. He worked with elements of all genres in his music, performed with pianist Carla Bley, conductor Eberhard Schoener and with rock guitarist Leslie West

"The bass made my life easier; I love it," said Bruce in a Rocklife interview. But now his instrument has fallen silent and another Cream reunion like that in 2005 is no longer possible. The composer, multi-instrumentalist and singer passed away on October 25, 2014 of cancer. His "Life on Earth" ended too soon, but for his fans the charismatic soloist will forever remain a phenomenon in the popular music scene.

Gary Moore was one of the finest and most respected guitarists of his generation, with a rich musical career both in bands and as a solo artist. He had a vibrant love affair with rock and the blues, which is proudly and loudly heard on Live At Bush Hall 2007.

This show, recorded at London’s Bush Hall on May 17, 2007, was originally broadcast by Planet Rock radio. Eagle Rock Entertainment to release Peter Gabriel's 'Classic Albums: So' on DVD, Blu-ray and digital on Sept. 18, 2012

On September 18, Eagle Rock Entertainment will release Classic Albums: So, the next instalment in their Classic Albums series on DVD and Blu-ray.
This release tells the story behind the making of Peter Gabriel’s 1986 album So. It was his fifth solo album and the first one to have a title (all others were self-titled). The album spawned a number of hit singles on both sides of the Atlantic including “Sledgehammer,” “Big Time,” “Don’t Give Up,” (a duet with Kate Bush) and “In Your Eyes” which drove So to multi-platinum sales, the No.1 spot in the UK and No.2 in the US.
The acclaimed Classic Albums series is a definitive collection of the stories behind the albums that form the soundtrack to our lives. Made with the full authorization and co-operation of the artists, Classic Albums: So offers contributions from many of those involved in the making of the album and the landmark videos.  Those featured include Peter Gabriel himself, co-producer Daniel Lanois, engineer Kevin Killen and musicians Jerry MarottaLaurie AndersonTony Levin and Manu Katché and many more.
So was very much an album of the MTV generation and the distinctive videos for tracks like “Sledgehammer,” “Red Rain,” “Big Time,” and “Don’t Give Up” were key factors in the album’s success.  A special re-mastered version of the classic album So will be released by Real World/EMI in September 2012 on CD, triple CD and a super deluxe box set.
Classic Albums: So offers a unique perspective on the motivations behind – and the actual creation of – this masterwork and contains as Bonus Features more than 30 minutes of additional material not included in the broadcast version.  This release is not to be missed.

Eagle Rock Entertainment to release Hendrix tribute by Gary Moore

Blues For Jimi set for Sept. 25, 2012 release!

Eagle Rock Entertainment is also proud to announce the September 25 release of the Gary Moore CD, DVD and Blu-ray title Blues For Jimi
This release captures a unique concert featuring Moore playing Jimi Hendrix tracks, including such classics as “Purple Haze,” “Foxy Lady,” “The Wind Cries Mary,” “Hey Joe,” “Voodoo Child (Slight Return)” and many more. Filmed at the London Hippodrome on October 25, 2007, it was part of the launch for the Jimi Hendrix “Live At Monterey” program.
At the end of the night, Gary was joined by Mitch Mitchell and Billy Cox of the Jimi Hendrix Experience for three tracks.  The full line-up for this show was Gary Moore (guitar, vocals); Dave Bronze (bass); Darrin Mooney (drums) with Billy Cox (bass on tracks 9-11, and also vocals on the first two of those) and Mitch Mitchell (drums on tracks 9-11).
Both Gary Moore and Mitch Mitchell have passed since this concert took place, which makes the recording of this incredible night so special. Gary Moore was one of the finest British guitarists of all time and is one of the few players who could pay homage to Jimi Hendrix’s groundbreaking and truly distinctive guitar style. This is a stunning tribute from one master guitarist to another.
