Coachella 2016 provided a number of special and memorable performances as it staged its final Weekend April 22-24 at the Empire Polo Club in Indio.

Those arriving at Coachella early Friday were treated to one of the fest's most spirited performances. Mbongwana Star brought their joyful and otherworldly African rhythm- and vocals-rooted sounds to the Gobi tent at noon confirming the adage that great music is the universal language.

The festival's most senior performer of 2016, 76-years-young Mavis Staples' energetic sound blended blues, gospel, soul and more. She also honored her friend Prince with an acappella chorus of "Purple Rain," and reflected how the Purple One was "the most beautiful spirit I have ever met."

Foals had no trouble attracting the masses to the main Coachella Stage despite high temperatures and gusty dust-filled winds. The band's 50-minute set included a dreamy "Olympic Airways," atmospheric "Give It All" and rapid fire rocker "What Went Down."

Icelandic collective Of Monsters and Men was the perfect artist to perform on the Coachella Stage as night fell, with the group's shimmering and soaring material providing true magic on day one. The infectious "Empire," and several hits off the band's debut ("Dirty Paws," "King and Lionheart," "Little Talks") thrilled the crowd gathered at the expansive Empire Polo Club.

The genre-defying Last Shadow Puppets weighed in on Coachella with a truly genre-defying sound that somehow mixed up Paul Williams pop sensibilities, rock, baroque pop and more. But the band killed it for the final number, an epic and rocking take on the Beatles "I Want You (She's So Heavy)."

I had never heard of The Dead Ships before I caught their energetic set inside the Gobi tent early Saturday. The original song "Big Quiet" made quite an impression via my single listen, with the Los Angeles band driving the song's melodic and rhythmic textures in a powerful display of force. The mighty melodic rocker "Canyon" made an equally strong impression.

For jazz fans, taking in GoGo Penguin's early afternoon performance inside the Gobi was critical. The British trio impressed with a 45-minute set of original compositions, including a swirling "Branches Break" and propulsive "Initiate," the latter that worked flawless drum, bass and piano solos into the track's dynamic flow.

Australia's DMA's created such a compelling and expansive sound throughout their fast-moving 45-minute outing, I could easily see the band returning to play on one of the larger outdoor platforms next time around. Featuring material from their 2016 album "Hills End," the DMA's conjured up the best of Oasis as they unleashed rousing rock that was both inspired and inspiring. Standouts in the band's terrific appearance included the soaring rocker "Too Soon" and undeniably catchy "Lay Down."

No matter how many times I've caught singer-songwriter-guitarist Gary Clark Jr. in concert, I've been floored by the strength of his performances. It was no different when the Austin-based great performed on the Coachella Stage on Saturday. His set featured a splendid 7-minute "Bright Lights," that segued right into the Chuck Berry-styled rocker "Travis County." Subsequent tracks continued to showcase his amazing guitar work, as well as his soulful vocals (notably on "Our Love").

Pioneering English quartet Lush (who formed in the late 1980s and disbanded in 1998 before reuniting in 2015) played a wonderful set of dream pop-meets-alt rock in the Gobi tent. "Breeze" was one of many wonderful songs they played that came off as a kind of amped-up version of Mazzy Star, while "Ladykillers" simply rocked to the delight of the crowd moving with the music. 

Courtney Barnett hails from Melbourne, Australia, but the young singer's blend of insightful and literate-but-rambling lyrics delivered in a kind of deadpan manner amidst a sparse alt-rock attack made for an involving set for those gathered in front of the Outdoor Theatre. To be sure, her songs can be as catchy as any in memory (the chorus of "Dead Fox" and the folk rocker "Depreston" being obvious examples), and the large setting allowed Barnett to really showcase her hard rocking instincts via the freewheeling rocker "Pedestrian At Best" and "Nobody Really Cares if You Don't Go to the Party."


Silversun Pickups' made a triumphant return to Coachellafest, and I can't think of many performances that played out over Weekend #2 that were stronger. The quartet's driving version of "Well Thought Out Twinkles" and "Panic Switch" were standouts.

Did Guns N' Roses deliver at their second appearance at Coachella? The quick answer is yes. Despite lead singer Axl Rose being confined mostly to his throne (in the wake of a broken foot he suffered at a warm-up gig in early April), GNR impressed fans with their version of classics such as "It's So Easy," "Welcome to the Jungle," "Live and Let Die" and "Sweet Child O' Mine."They also unveiled the tour debuts of "Out Ta Get Me" and "Used to Love Her" this night.

Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats turned in an entertaining set highlighted by bouncy, soul-fueled "I Need Never Get Old," R&B "Howling At Nothing" and "Wasting Time," the latter soulful blues song that allowed Rateliff to showcase some cool guitar lead work.

Pete Yorn turned in the first of two essential sets I caught on the final day of the event. His 45-minute set showcased the singer-songwriter's amazing gift at wrapping his infectious songs in a style blending alternative and folk rock layers. Playing both early standouts ("Strange Condition," "Life on a Chain") and new songs from 2016's amazing "ArrangingTime" album (the aptly dubbed "Lost Weekend" and wistful "Tomorrow" pulled in everybody immediately), Yorn's set was one of the best of the long weekend. 

Chris Stapleton performed at Coachella, and played the next weekend at Stagecoach for good reason. The talented singer-songwriter-guitarist showcased one great song after another off his great debut "Traveller," with the honest ballad "Nobody to Blame," gorgeous "Fire Away" and rousing cover of Waylon Jennings' "I Ain't Living Long Like This," displayed the Kentucky artist's rich baritone and top-tier band (including his wife Morgane Stapleton adding amazing vocals to the set and harmonica legend Mickey Raphael).

The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival – better known simply as “Coachella” – is coming to Indio, California over two fast-moving weekends, April 15-17 and again April 22-24, 2016.

Coachellagoers from around the planet are already planning their trips to the 17th edition of an event that has once again gathered up an eclectic line-up of artists from across the musical spectrum to perform in front of audiences spread out across the Empire Polo Club in Indio. Rock, jazz, blues, soul, EDM, folk, alt country and rap artists will perform on a number of outdoor and indoor stages positioned throughout the sprawling festival grounds. Original and insightful artwork installations positioned throughout the event make for an even more exceptional experience.

This round-up will highlight my “wish list” of performances I hope to catch at Coachella. However, there is always the chance that two or three of my favorite artists will be performing at the same time confirming the age-old advice that life is sometimes about making choices. With 180 or so acts performing, it is simply impossible to see all the artists.

Fridays, April 15 and 22

I haven't seen Of Monsters and Men since they performed at Coachella in 2013, so I'm very excited to be able to see the six-member Icelandic ensemble there again this year. The band's latest album Beneath the Skin is bolstered by a slew of great songs. Standouts such as "Crystals," "Human" and "Empire" are expansive and exhilarating – think of a group whose otherworldly sound bridges U2 and Sigur Rós. The perfect sound in the picturesque setting that is so much a part of the festival.

While on the subject of catching up with artists I've seen only once before, I am very thrilled to see that soul singer Mavis Staples is going to perform on the heels of the release of her superb 2016 disc Livin' On A High Note. Produced by M. Ward (of She & Him and Monsters of Folk fame) and featuring songwriting credits from Neko Case, Justin Vernon, Ben Harper and more, Staples' new album is a joyous and authentic gale that will be sure to endear her with everyone at Coachella. 

An act I have not yet seen but plan to is Foals, the roots-meets-garage soul rockers out of Oxford, England. The English quintet has racked up a number of high honors since emerging a decade ago, and has impressed audiences at Glastonbury and Roskilde festivals, as well as the Coachella faithful in 2013. 

Other Friday acts on my wish list include African collective Mbongwana Star and English rock supergroup the Last Shadow Puppets.

Saturdays, April 16 and 23

While the biggest music-related story of 2016 has been the long and sadly-growing list of lost legends (David Bowie, Glenn Frey, Paul Kantner, Sir George Martin, Dan Hicks, Merle Haggard and many more), the announcement that Guns N' Roses will regroup to perform at Coachella with founding singer Axl Rose joined by original members Slash (guitar) and Duff McKagan (bass) has been a huge story. No matter how GNR's two Saturday night sets play out, there is no denying that the audience will go nuts when the groundbreaking Los Angeles-spawned rockers break into "Welcome to the Jungle," "It's So Easy" and "Sweet Child o' Mine."

Modern day blues-meets-soul master Gary Clark Jr. was relatively unknown when he performed inside Coachella's Gobi tent in April 2012. That is not the case today, where he is acknowledged as one of the blues' greatest stars. The fact that the Austin artist's soulful vocals (which recall a young Al Green) are as impressive as his amazing lead guitar work is sure to make his set a "can't miss" affair. I'll never forget his opening 10-minute version of the Ten Years After-meets-Joe Bonamassa blues rocker "When My Train Pulls In" that featured a number of great lead guitar forays.

Courtney Barnett impressed me the first time when I caught her at Coachella in 2014, and the Melbourne singer-songwriter was even stronger when she opened for Blur at Hollywood Bowl in October 2015. Her electric folk rooted around her rambling lyrics and freewheeling guitar playing is as original as it is intoxicating.

Jazz doesn't typically get a lot of attention in Indio, but that may change this time around thanks to the arrival of outstanding young trio GoGo Penguin. Based in Manchester, England, the "acoustic electronica" group features drummer Rob Turner, double bassist Nick Blacka and keyboardist Chris Illingworth.

Other Saturday-bound acts I hope to catch include London-spawned legends the Damned, dream indie pop-rock champions Silversun Pickups and Los Angeles-based indie pop-rock garage outfit the Dead Ships.

Sundays, April 17 and 24

History proves that the third day of Coachella offers some of the most exhilarating sets. I can recall amazing final day performances from the likes of Florence + the Machine, Neon Trees, Dinosaur Jr. and Dead Can Dance that washed over me like opening day salvos. 

Country and bluegrass artist Chris Stapleton has had such an enormous impact on a number of genres on the music scene that he is booked to play both weekends of Coachella, as well as the Stagecoach Festival on April 30. The Kentucky native has scored at least six number-one songs, including hits for Kenny Chesney and George Strait. He has also penned songs for the far-flung likes of Adele, Luke Bryan, Braid Paisley and Tim McGraw. The Nashville-based singer-songwriter's debut album, 2015's "Traveller," reached number one on the US Billboard 200 charts.

Chris Stapleton isn't the only artist I haven't yet caught that is high on my list to see in the desert. I've been very impressed by the power of North London's Wolf Alice, and I hope to see them deliver songs from their debut "My Love Is Cool" (especially the infectious "Bros" and fiery "Moaning Lisa Smile").

Cold War Kids bring a mix of indie and alternative styles to the sonic table, and always offer up energetic and fun performances. Long-time favorites in Southern California, Cold War Kids' sound will appeal to fans of groups such as Death Cab for Cutie and Delta Spirit. 

In other Sunday action, I am aiming to catch hard-hitting rock 'n' soul quartet The Heavy, whose blend of James Brown soul and Led Zeppelin rock personified by singles including "Since You Been Gone," "Turn Up" and "What Happened To The Love" should really get concertgoers on their feet and moving. I also plan to see Pete Yorn, who is appearing at Coachella just as he is gaining widespread acclaim for his wonderful return, 2016's "ArrangingTime." The new album is Yorn's first in more than five years.

One thing Coachella-goers can count on, whether they catch those artists or any of the countless others on the bill, the festival is an adventure not to be missed.

Record Store Day: Zia Record Exchange, Pepperland Music, Gary Clark Jr., The Black Keys and much more!

One of the great things about (April 20) is I'll be out at the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival catching a number of fantastic and groundbreaking musical acts. An added bonus is that because it's Record Store Day, my first stop will be a run to Zia Record Exchange to check out the new and special releases. I always buy something.

But it matters little whether you are at Coachella or not on Record Store Day because countless independent music stores are selling special releases and even hosting in-store performances. Here is a rundown of Record Store Day-related news and links.

My hometown indie record store, Pepperland Music located at 850 N. Tustin Avenue in Orange, California, is hosting several live performances. Both singer-songwriter Michael Ubaldini and Cowboy Buddha are set to play; that amounts to some pretty amazing Americana and roots music offered for free. The Droppers are also set to perform inside the store (which offers both new and used CD and vinyls, and also hundreds of instruments!).I'm all the artists will be selling and signing their latest releases too. The A-side is the studio track Carry On, which is featured in Activision's video game Call of Duty: Black Ops II. This song was written specifically for the game and released on Sept. 25, 2012. The B-side features the instrumental version which has been previously unreleased. This picture disc is limited and features the Call of Duty: Black Ops II artwork and Avenged Sevenfold's Deathbat

Avenged Sevenfold "Live in the LBC & Diamonds in the Rough"

12" vinyl LP and DVD Deluxe Edition - Limited to 3500 copies

For Record Store Day 2013, on the 5 year anniversary of the Live in the LBC performance, we have produced a limited vinyl/DVD configuration, pressed on vinyl for the first time in a deluxe gatefold jacket and mastered by Bernie Grundman. This release contains both the first live concert film from Avenged Sevenfold "Live in the LBC" filmed live on April 10, 2008 as well as "Diamonds in the Rough", an offering of previously unreleased B-sides and more. The CD/DVD configuration was released September 16, 2008 and has since been certified Platinum.

Biffy Clyro: "Black Chandelier" - 7" EP - Limited to 2,000 copies

Pressed on limited-edition black and clear splattered vinyl for the first time and featuring an energetic and unreleased live performance of the new single Black Chandelier from the new Opposites album. This was recorded at Kaufleuten, Zurich-Switzerland on January 19, 2013. Also features a previously unreleased B-side, City of Dreadful Night.


The Black Keys / The Stooges: "No Fun" Split 7" Colored vinyl Single - Limited to 7,500 copies

This year's Side by Side Vinyl Series features The Stooges '69 classic track on one side and The Black Keys updated 2002 take on the flip side pressed on orange & red sunburst vinyl. Very Limited so grab it before it's gone for good.

Bombino: "Azamane Tiliade/Si Chilan"- 10" Single - Limited to 3,000 copies

Nonesuch Records releases Nomad, from the Tuareg guitarist, singer, and songwriter Omara "Bombino" Moctar and his band, on April 2nd. The Black Keys' Dan Auerbach, who just won the GRAMMY Award for Producer of the Year, helmed the recording at his Nashville studio, Easy Eye Sound. On Record Store Day, Nonesuch will release a 10" with the album track "Azamane Tiliade" and an exclusive non-album B-side, "Si Chilan."Mastered at Bernie Grundman Studios and pressed by Pirates Press, which means it sounds real good.


Built To Spill: "Live" - Two-disc vinyl LP and CD Deluxe Edition - Limited to 2,500 copies

An absolutely stunning collection of seminal Built To Spill songs recorded live during the band's 1999 "Keep It Like A Secret" tour. Originally released on April 18, 2000, on both vinyl (on Up Records) and CD (on Warner Bros. Records). The vinyl configuration initially contained two bonus tracks "Forget Remember When" and "Now and Then," which have now been included on the limited-edition CD in celebration of this release and Record Store Day. Naturally, it's cut for vinyl at Bernie Grundman Mastering especially for your sonic delight.


Cream: "Live at the Royal Albert Hall" - Three-disc vinyl LP box set with book Deluxe Edition - Limited to 1,500 copies

A sensational and historic reunion concert performed and recorded May 2, 3, 5, & 6 in 2005 and released for the first time in October of that same year - released on DVD, CD, and vinyl. Now available for the first time in over five years and for the first time ever, we have produced a limited edition of this box set on CREAM-colored vinyl in celebration of Record Store Day 2013 and this important recording. Eli "Paperboy" Reed: "WooHoo"- 7" vinyl EP - Limited to 3,000 copies

Eli "Paperboy" Reed is an emerging talent who already has two albums under his belt, 2008's Roll With You and 2010's Come & Get It, which earned the soul singer an especially loyal fan following in Europe - so much so that Reed was nominated as "Breakthrough Artist of the Year" by Britain's Mojo magazine. Now on vinyl for the first time, the EP has been pressed on 10" vinyl for Record Store Day, and includes songs by Josh Ritter ("Another New World"), Gillian Welch and David Rawlings ("Down Along the Dixie Line"), Punch Brothers ("Squirrel of Possibility"), and Mclusky ("Icarus Smicarus"), along with one traditional tune, arranged by Punch Brothers ("Moonshiner"). Originallyrecorded during the Nashville sessions for their critically acclaimed 2012 album Who's Feeling Young Now?, these tracks were produced by Jacquire King (Kings of Leon, Tom Waits, Modest Mouse). Cut by Chris Bellman (Bernie Grundman Studios) and pressed at Pallas MFG (Diepholz, Germany) because, sound matters!

Inbox Update: Orion Music + More Festival, Camper Van Beethoven, Benefit Concert

Happy Monday everybody! Here is a brief overview of the latest news plucked from my inbox...

Metallica, in conjunction with their friends C3 Presents, are pleased to announce the lineup for the 2013 Orion Music + More Festival, to be held at Belle Isle in Detroit, MI on June 8and 9.   Headliners will include Metallica, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rise Against, Deftones and Bassnectar, while the festival will also feature amazing acts including Gogol Bordello, Foals, Tomahawk, The Joy Formidable, Death Grips and local Detroit bands The Dirtbombs, DEATH and BATTLECROSS.

HOLLYWOOD, CA (February 24, 2013) – These artists are coming together to support a long time friend and publicist Nancy Sayle, who was struck with Primary Progressive MS in 2009. This is a severe version of the disease and only 10% are inflicted with this level. She was also diagnosed with a pituitary brain tumor 2012. Visiting her close and dear friend as well as client, Steve Stevens and his wife Josie Stevens, she informed them of this news and all the medical issues. Knowing that she would not be working as much and facing large amounts of medical bills, Stevens suggested that a benefit was in order to help her. This is an amazing self-less gathering with a lot of love as well as creating the much needed awareness.
