John Oates & The Good Road Band ‘Live In Nashville’ Set For September 18th Release

Four new originals along with covers of Mississippi John Hurt, Jimmy Rogers, Don Gibson highlight second Thirty Tigers album

LOS ANGELES, July 31, 2020—Rock & Roll Hall of Famer John Oates has had a home in Nashville for more than a decade, performing with some of the city’s most sought-after musicians. John’s Thirty Tigers debut, Arkansas, performed with The Good Road Band, was released in 2018, proving a critical and commercial success in the Americana and roots community, a combination of originals with classic songs popularized by Mississippi John Hurt, Jimmy Rodgers and Don Gibson.  After two-plus solid years of honing their chops through touring, that group – mandolin stalwart Sam Bush, pedal steel maestro Russ Pahl (Dan Auerbach), electric guitar whiz Guthrie Trapp, expert bassist Steve Mackay, cello prodigy Nate Smith (Kacey Musgraves) and drummer/percussionist extraordinaire Josh “Daddy” Day – returns intact for Live In Nashville, set for release on September 18 on all major digital streaming platforms. The set was recorded last January 9 at Station Inn, the legendary intimate listening room in The Gulch section of Nashville where the band first took shape.  “This album represents a full-circle moment for me,” said John, in quarantine with his family in his adopted Music City home. “It feels like the culmination of the Arkansas project, being able to bring these guys back, and to be able to make this record after touring and playing so many shows together.”  Inspired by Mississippi John Hurt, Live in Nashville features songs like the gospel-blues opener, “Lord Send Me,” the Delta blues of the standard “Stack o Lee” and an electrified take on “Make Me a Pallet on Your Floor,” dubbed “Pallet Soft and Low,” where John manages to show off some of his well-honed rock guitar skills. In yet another “full circle moment,” John pays tribute to his own childhood with a cover of Don Gibson’s “Oh Lonesome Me,” the first song he learned to sing and play on guitar as a six-year-old after hearing it on the radio. Several of the songs come with Oates’ own stories about the songs, connecting the dots as to their connections, including popular hits of the era like the Mississippi Sheiks’ 1930 success, “Sittin’ on Top of the World,” Emmett Miller’s 1924 breakthrough, “Anytime” and Jimmy Rogers’ 1932 classic, “Miss the Mississippi and You.”

“I was always fascinated by this rural Americana Appalachian music, which opened the door for me to John Lee Hooker and other blues artists long before the British Invasion turned kids on to them. I always preferred the originals myself.”  Live in Nashville traces how country, blues and gospel bubbled up from Mississippi and New Orleans and landed in northern urban cities like Chicago, St. Louis, and New York. John describes the sound as, “Dixieland, dipped in bluegrass, and salted with Delta blues.”  “Something magical happened,” said John about his first time playing with The Good Road Band in the studio. “The thing you pray for, but so rarely achieve. My producer just said, ‘I don’t know what this is, John, but keep doing it because it’s cool.’”  Live in Nashville shows what they are capable of on any given night, and in lieu of being able to see them in concert, this is the next best thing. “This experience has made me a better player,” said John referring to what he's learned with his work in Daryl Hall and John Oates. “Playing with this caliber of musicians has really elevated my game and my ability to play guitar. As a musician, it helps me articulate what I need to do in a better way. I’m an improved singer, my vocal chops are stronger. For Daryl and I, our writing styles are totally predicated on how good we are as singers and musicians. Tell me more: When Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash both passed away in 2003, their son John Carter Cash discovered the couple had left behind a "monstrous amassment" of things including a slew of his father's handwritten letters, original poems and other things he had penned during his life. Several years ago John Carter Cash approached a diverse and wide-range of artists with an invitation that they each use their own artistic voice to set some of those writings to new music; the result is the enthralling 16-track Johnny Cash: Forever Words. Recorded primarily at the fabled Cash Cabin in Hendersonville, TN and produced by John Carter Cash and Steve Berkowitz, this is a collection whose material is as rich as Johnny Cash's resonant baritone. The range of the material spans seemingly every corner of classic and contemporary country and Americana styles. The opening track ("Forever/I Still Miss Someone") sets the tone for the ambitious collection, with Kris Kristofferson's sonorous spoken word style delivering the last poem Cash ever wrote against the backdrop of Willie Nelson's distinctive acoustic guitar playing. Then there are real-life newlyweds Ruston Kelly & Kacey Musgraves joining forces on the tender "To June This Morning" (the lyrics are taken from an actual letter Johnny Cash wrote to his wife, June Carter Cash), Brad Paisley providing a decidedly modern-day touch to "Gold All Over The Ground," and emotional contributions from Johnny Cash's daughters Rosanne Cash ("The Walking Wounded") and Carlene Carter ("June's Sundown"). Other terrific songs are delivered by the late Chris Cornell (the chilling "You Never Knew My Mind," one of his final solo recordings), John Mellencamp (the playful country blues romp "Them Double Blues"), Elvis Costello (the Ron Sexsmith-styled "I'll Still Love You"), Dailey & Vincent (the bluegrass gospel gem "He Bore It All") and the Jayhawks (the gorgeous "What Would I Dreamer Do?"). Tell me more: As a member of the Fallen Stars and with his recent solo recordings, singer-songwriter/multi-insturmentalist Bobbo Byrnes has been among the leaders of Southern California's thriving Americana music scene. On his newly-issued solo album Two Sides to This Town, Byrnes has captured America's broken spirit with the kind of assurance and authenticity that marks Bruce Springsteen's early work. Don't believe it? Just listen to the rousing opener "Angelia" (a song Byrnes penned after a visit to the town where he grew up only to realize it didn't feel like home anymore), a nuanced and graceful cover of Tracy Huffman's "Glad" and the melancholy-drenched "Dam." The reminiscent "Massachusetts" teams Byrnes' vocals with those of his wife Tracy Byrnes (whose graceful bass guitar work is key element on the disc). "Welfare Cadillac" is bolstered by Danny Ott's guitar solo positioned as a call-and-response with a fluid horn section; the driving "Vegas" is a solid roots rocker that captures the ethos of those who take the long drive to Sin City in hopes of winning a fortune even while losing themselves in the process; Byrnes' dazzling lead guitar work on the track is a bonus. While Byrnes has his own strong artistic voice (which includes his stellar skills on guitar, mandolin and keyboards), his songs and passion will appeal to fans of Springsteen, Ryan Adams, Dawes and John Mellencamp. Tell me more: Although country music icon Don Gibson is best known for early hits he scored in the late 1950s and throughout the 1960s (including "Sweet Dreams," "I Can't Stop Loving You," "Oh Lonesome Me," "Just One Time" and "Sea of Heartbreak"), the North Carolina native enjoyed a bona fide renaissance extending throughout the 1970s. The newly-released The Best of the Hickory Records Years (1970-1978) features more than two dozen tracks pulled from his successful second act. Remastered by multiple Grammy-winning engineer Michael Graves, the parade of country hits and deep tracks has never sounded better. It celebrates the Country Music Hall of Fame member’s legacy and coincides with the 10th anniversary of Gibson’s death on Nov. 17, 2003. I Can’t Stop Loving You: The Songs of Don Gibson sells for $11.99.

 

“I am excited the album is out so fans can hear it!” said Barnett. “This project was a labor of love. I became good friends with Don and his wife, Bobbi, a few years before he passed away.  I was so honored that Don asked me to record an album of his songs, and I wanted to create something he would be proud to have his name on. 

“I’m thrilled to release this album with Cracker Barrel Old Country Store®. They were wonderful to work with when I released Winter Wonderland a few years ago, and I’m happy to be back with them again on this project,” Barnett said.

I Can't Stop Loving You: The Songs of Don Gibson was produced by Barnett and recorded in Nashville. It features legendary musicians and Country Music Hall of Fame members Harold Bradley, Hargus "Pig" Robbins, and Charlie McCoy, all of whom played on several of Gibson’s original recordings of these songs.

Gibson, who was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1973 and the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2001, was a very popular and highly influential country music singer/songwriter in the 1950s and 1960s. As an artist, he charted more than 20 Top 10 hits and released nearly 40 albums between 1958 and 1978 and was a member of the Grand Ole Opry. As a songwriter, he wrote songs such as “I Can’t Stop Loving You,” “Oh Lonesome Me,” and “Sweet Dreams” (among others) that have become timeless classics and have been recorded by a multitude of artists in a variety of music genres, including Ella Fitzgerald, Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Patsy Cline, Neil Young and others. Gibson considered himself a songwriter who sang, rather than a singer who wrote songs.

 

Crossville, Tenn.-native Barnett has been singing since she was five years old. She possesses a full-bodied voice and vocal style reminiscent of the iconic classic country and pop singers. As a teenager, she starred as Patsy Cline in the stage show “Always….Patsy Cline” at the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville and has reprised the role several times at the Ryman.Barnett released her self-titled debut album on Asylum Records. Her second album was the Sire Records release I’ve Got a Right to Cry, produced by legendary Owen Bradley. She released a Christmas album in 2010, Winter Wonderland, with Cracker Barrel Old Country Store® and Rounder Records. Barnett’s rendition of “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”from that album was prominently featured in the 2012 USA Network television series “Political Animals. In 2011, Barnett released Sweet Dreams, a collection of songs made famous by Cline, on the Opry Music label.
