March 26, 2021—The Peter Frampton Band’s tribute to David Bowie’s “Loving The Alien” is the latest track to be revealed off their forthcoming album Frampton Forgets the Words. The performance video, which premiered yesterday on Grammy.com, features personal photos of Bowie and Frampton together as well as archival MTV footage. Watch/share the video HERE.

 

Frampton Forgets The Words, out April 23 on UMe, includes instrumental versions of some of Frampton’s favorite songs and is the follow up to his 2007 Grammy Award-winning instrumental album, Fingerprints. 

 

“Loving The Alien” follows the release of the band’s version of Roxy Music’s “Avalon,” of which Rolling Stone notes, “Frampton and his band’s version doesn’t stray too far from the 1982 original, with his guitar a stand-in for Bryan Ferry’s inimitable vocals,” and Radiohead’s “Reckoner,” which continues to receive critical acclaim from SPIN, Stereogum, Guitar World and more.  

 

Frampton Forgets the Words is co-produced by Frampton and Chuck Ainlay and was  recorded/mixed at Frampton’s own Studio Phenix in Nashville. With his storied 1954 Les Paul Phenix—which was lost in a plane crash in 1980 and recovered more than 30 years later—  Frampton brings virtuosic guitar playing to songs by George Harrison, Stevie Wonder, Lenny Kravitz and more. Frampton notes, “This album is a collection of ten of my favorite pieces of music. My guitar is also a voice and I have always enjoyed playing my favorite vocal lines that we all know and love. These tracks are my great band and me paying tribute to the original creators of this wonderful music. So much fun to do and I really hope you enjoy it too.”

 

Peter Frampton is among the most celebrated guitarists in rock history. At 18, he co-founded one of the first supergroups, Humble Pie. By 22, he was touring incessantly and making use of the talk box which would become his signature guitar effect. He’s collaborated with such legendary artists as George Harrison, David Bowie, Jerry Lee Lewis and Ringo Starr, among many others, and has toured with the likes of Stevie Nicks, Greg Allman, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Cheap Trick, and the Steve Miller Band. In 2014 he was inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame. 

 

His 2019 album All Blues (UMe), was #1 for fifteen weeks on Billboard’s Blues Chart, and his autobiography Do You Feel Like I Do?: A Memoir, released last October via Hachette Books, debuted on The New York Times Bestsellers list. His 1976 album, Frampton Comes Alive! remains one of the top-selling live records of all time and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame last year.

Previously unissued Alex Chilton 1999 live set featuring Hi Rhythm Section coming May 7 from Omnivore Recordings

A historic Alex Chilton recording is on the way this spring. A previously-unissued live set from 1999 will be released by Omnivore Recordings on May 7, 2021!

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis is a city with music in its blood. In 1999, when musician and producer Fred Ford, co-founder of the Beale Street Music Festival, was diagnosed with cancer, David Less organized Fredstock, a fundraiser to help with his medical bills. Less contacted Memphis legend Alex Chilton (The Box Tops, Big Star), who was living in New Orleans, to ask him to participate.

 

Alex said he didn’t have any musicians to play with in Memphis, so Less suggested the Hi Rhythm Section, the band behind classics from artists including Al Green, Ann Peebles, Ike & Tina Turner, O.V. Wright, and Otis Clay. Alex replied, “That will work.” 

 

Available on CD, Digital, and LP, Boogie Shoes: Live on Beale Street was recorded at the New Daisy Theater in Memphis during Fredstock. This previously unissued live set contains versions of hits by the Supremes, Otis Clay, Chuck Berry, and Little Richard; even a cover of the KC & the Sunshine Band title track. Street date is May 7, 2021 from Omnivore Recordings.

 

Packaging contains liner notes from producer David Less, a friend of Chilton and author of the acclaimed Memphis Mayhem: A Story of the Music That Shook Up the World, and features a cover by rock ’n’ roll and folk art painter Lamar Sorrento.

 

Omnivore will also offer a limited edition bundle that features the LP and a numbered print of the album cover. This special edition is limited to 100 copies, and is only available from the OmnivoreRecordings.com web site.

 

Less, in his liners, writes: “I never saw [Alex] have so much fun on stage. Without rehearsal, Alex called songs and the band locked in. The horn section consists of top Memphis session guys who huddled together when each song was called creating parts on the fly. The pure joy of playing this music so freely with such legendary musicians comes across in every groove of the record.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — What started one year ago as an innocent social media game, when Facebook friends and fans suggested artists they would like to cover Wesley Stace a.k.a.John Wesley Harding’s songs, became a reality with the Community Coronation Covers Project, a community-curated playlist featuring myriad well-respected artists. The tracks have now been gathered on Bandcamp as The Good Lyre: Songs of John Wesley Harding, available Fri., April 2. All proceeds from sales and downloads will benefit Sweet Relief Musicians Fund.

 

From the hundreds of suggested artist/song pairings, Stace compiled a list: “Realizing that some of these wild ideas were tantalizingly within my grasp, I wondered whether the musicians in question might be willing to help out, to make someone’s day.”

 

These are “bespoke covers: requested by a single person, and hand delivered, as it were, to that person,” says Stace. “The object was first to blow the mind of whoever made the suggestion ‘You said you wanted to hear Graham Parker sing ‘Devil in Me’? Here you go!!’ and then to blow the minds of any fans of the performing artists whom they never thought they would hear sing this song or perhaps any other of my songs: handmade custom-built quarantainment.”

 

“The project started purely as a way to lift spirits at the beginning of the lockdown; a way for musicians to cheer people up. Now we’re bringing it full circle: all the proceeds from this album will benefit Sweet Relief, and specifically musicians affected by the COVID pandemic. It’s a beautiful way to mark the end of the project’s journey. I immediately think of John Prine, Adam Schlesinger, Dave Greenfield, Matthew Seligman, Hal Willner and other friends and/or musical influences lost to complications from the virus.

 

“These performances were acts of great generosity and kindness by these artists — it’s not necessarily an easy thing to work up a new song by request — and I’d like to thank everyone who contributed. Now, in a further act of generosity, all musicians gave an enthusiastic YES to all proceeds being donated to Sweet Relief. There but for fortune go all of us.”

Tell me more: Paul Stanley's Soul Station is no publicity ploy. The KISS frontman's love of soul music dates back before the Starchild's New York-spawned band hit rock and roll pay dirt in the early '70s. I caught Stanley and his top-tier Soul Station back in 2016 at the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano, CA and was blown away (read my review of that concert HERE). Now, the ensemble's long-awaited full-length debut (Now and Then) has been released and it fully delivers on the magic I witnessed five years ago. Stanley revisits a slew of soul classics with faithful and affecting renditions; these include a wonderful take on the Al Green 1972 classic "Let's Stay Together," romantic reading of the Miracles' 1965 hit "Ooo Baby Baby" and an emotive version of the Spinners' 1972 R&B favorite "Could It Be I'm Falling in Love." Even more impressive are the five originals that equal the might of the reworked covers. The instantly-infectious "I, Oh I" is particularly stunning and is one of those ear candy cuts that you hear and can't get out of your head. The wistful "Save Me (From You)," lovely "Lorelei" and shimmering "Whenever You're Ready (I'm Here)" — the latter a duet with soprano Crystal Starr — are other welcome originals on Now and Then. Stanley's full voice is consistently on the mark, and his mellifluous falsetto adds another key element in the enchantment displayed across the release — his versions of the Temptations' "Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)" and the Stylistics' "You Are Everything" are particularly impressive with Stanley utilizing his high-flying falsetto as the centerpiece of both songs. Stanley’s amazing group includes: Rafael “Hoffa” Moreira (guitar & backing vocals), Sean Hurley (bass), Alex Alessandroni (Musical Director, keyboards), Ely Rise (keyboards), Eric Singer (drums & backing vocals), RayYslas (percussion), Gavyn Rhone (backing vocals), Crystal Starr (backing vocals) and Laurhan Beato (backing vocals) and Jon Pappenbrook (lead trumpet). Information: PaulStanley.com.

Tell me more: Ringo Starr has rewarded fans with Zoom In, a high-energy disc which packs plenty of punch over the course of five songs. Starr's "Peace and Love" mantra plays out via a mix of positive and uplifting tracks that aim to find the best in humanity whilst bringing us all together. He has plenty of illustrious help from friends this time around. Starr turns in a terrific lead vocal performance for "Here's To The Nights," with an army of greats joining in for the big choruses (Paul McCartney, Joe Walsh, Jenny Lewis, Lenny Kravitz, Chris Stapleton, Ben Harper and many more). The bluesy "Zoom In Zoom Out" finds Doors guitarist Robby Krieger adding some tasty fret work with his slide while Benmont Tench (of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers fame) plays piano and organ. The reggae original "Waiting For the Tide to Turn" is a fantastic song that captures the unease of our times, Starr's baritone and Zelma Davis' soaring backing vocals casting hope with their tandem delivery. "Not Enough Love in the World" is bolstered by guitar great Steve Lukather's flashy lead work, along with a sweeping arrangement from keyboardist Joseph Williams. Title: No Matter What - Revisiting the Hits (Cleopatra Records)

Tell me more: Badfinger was one of the best British bands to emerge in the late 1960s, and was the first group signed by the Beatles' Apple label in 1968. Joey Molland — the last surviving member of the power pop quartet's classic line-up that also included Pete Ham, Tom Evans and Mike Gibbins — has joined forces with an eclectic, top-tier group of guests to record new versions of Badfinger's most beloved songs. Early highlights on the No Matter What - Revisiting the Hits include a faithful take on the "No Matter What" featuring Mark Stein (of Vanilla Fudge fame), "Come and Get It" (featuring keyboardist great Rick Wakeman), the psychedelic-styled "I Don't Mind" (with Carl Giammarese) and baroque-flavored version of "Day After Day" (featuring Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson along with Terry Reid & the Manchester String Quartet). The delights on the last half of the essential collection include Rick Springfield on the tuneful tour de force "Love Is Gonna Come At Last," power pop hero Matthew Sweet joining forces with Molland on an electrifying "Baby Blue," "Suitcase" with slide guitar master Sonny Landreth adding a Delta bluesy feel to the track, and the rootsy "Sweet Tuesday Morning" featuring finger style guitar virtuoso Albert Lee. Tell me more: Joshua Tree-based Son of the Velvet Rat is the memorable moniker for singer-songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Georg Altziebler and his wife, singer/multi-instrumentalist Heike Binder. Altziebler's deep lead vocals and the otherworldly sound that is created when Binder joins in with her backing vocals is a perfect fit with the mix of European folk and rootsy Americana musical forces that blend on their new album Solitary Company. Altziebler's poetic lyrics somehow capture the expansive feel of the Mojave Desert, adding additional power to the vivid songs. The sparse title track recalls some of Neil Young's beautiful Harvest-era acoustic gems, although it is enhanced by violin, viola and cello that bring symphonic flourishes to the acoustic soundscape. The driving "Stardust," haunting "When The Lights Go Down" (awash with accordion and moments of glorious fuzz guitar), romantic "11 & 9," rootsy folk rocker "The Only Child" and riveting "Remember Me" are among the wonderfully immersive originals on this bewitching album. Title: Zack Snyder's Justice League (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) (Watertower Music)

You might like if you enjoy: Junkie XL, Howard Shore, Hans Zimmer

Tell me more: Not only is the four-hour epic "Zack Snyder's Justice League" one of the most exciting superhero films in memory, but the equally ambitious 54-track Original Motion Picture Soundtrack for the film really showcases the creative might of composer Tom Holkenborg much like the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy did for Howard Shore. The current version of "Justice League" streaming on HBO Max blows away the 2017 version of the film; Holkenborg's score clearly outdistances the soundtrack used in the previous version of the film. This is a sweeping sonic experience that embraces the listener with every frame of the film, and is equally effective as a listening-only experience. The secret is that Holkenborg utilizes his instincts drawn from his hands-on experience working in rock, electronica, world music, classical, and more; he is able to effortlessly blend together the best of those sonic spheres across the marathon-length Zack Snyder's Justice League score. The cinematic "A Hunter Gathers," beautiful "Migratory," Neo-classical "World Ending Fire," dark-to-bright "No Dog, No Master," symphonic "Cyborg Becoming / Human All Too Human," 13-minute electronica rock blast "We Do This Together" and poignant "The Foundation Theme" are among the many high marks on this brilliant soundtrack. In addition to Holkenborg's astonishing score, there are several new songs featured in the film that appear on the collection; the Celtic-mining "Song To The Siren" from singer Rose Betts and striking "Hallelujah" performed by Allison Crowe. Having watched the epic Zack Snyder's Justice League on HBO Max yesterday, I am not surprised that composer Tom Holkenborg's soundtrack for the movie debuted at #1 on the iTunes chart today. I'll be reviewing the soundtrack in my next album review column, but I noted the score's power in my full-length discussion episode about the superhero Zack Snyder-directed film with musician/YouTube reviewer TJR that you can view HERE.

The album has amassed over 1 million streams on Spotify in just 24 hours, a remarkable feat for a soundtrack and confirmation that his "Mount Everest of Scores" has been warmly received by the DC Universe. The soundtrack's nearly 4 hours of music showcases Tom's colossal output on a project which was a massive and deeply personal undertaking for him, given his and Zack Snyder’s years-deep connection on the film.

Expanding the scope of their biggest hit to date once more, Glass Animals drops a new remix pack of “Heat Waves” today—listen to Heat Waves (Expansion Pack) HERE.

This time around, the band recruited UK dance music phenomenon Riton to reimagine, re-envision and recharge the single. He powers up “Heat Waves” with his signature four-on-the-floor house bounce, adding another dimension to the track as it amplifies frontman Dave Bayley’s fiery falsetto. Synths and bass lock into an unshakable groove as “Heat Waves” gets even hotter. The remix accompanies previously-released versions of the track by Oliver Heldens and Sonny Fodera, which EDM.com praised saying, “Both energetic house remixes elevate the original song’s success,” while Dancing Astronaut proclaims they were created for “dance floor primetime.”

This week, “Heat Waves” climbed to #1 on the Alternative Radio Chart, a first for the band in their career. The song is also #1 on Mediabase, #1 on Billboard Alternative Airplay Chart and #1 on Apple Music Alternative Genre Chart, and it continues to grow on the Top 40 Radio Chart and made its debut on Apple Music All Genres Chart.

It currently holds the #1 spot on Australia’s ARIA Official Singles Chart for the third consecutive week, as well as recently hit new peaks of #11 on Spotify’s US Top 50 Chart and #31 on Spotify’s Global Top 50 Chart. To date, the song has amassed over 300 million combined global streams (196M on Spotify / 77M on Spotify in the US alone) and hit a peak of 1.88 million daily streams on the platform. Glass Animals continues to rack up Spotify monthly listeners, currently at 16.2 million, making them the 217^th most-listened to artist on the platform and surpassing the likes of Tame Impala, Gorillaz, The 1975 and The Strokes. Big Whoop was defined by the intensely DIY nature of the recording process. Almost every aspect of the production was done by the band. The recording sessions were all done in Brian McLaughlin's living room and spare bedroom, where he also mixed the songs. Luke Imbusch composed the orchestral arrangements, recruiting and then conducting a live string quartet for the recording. The band collectively shares production credits, with each member bringing their own unique contributions to the table. Mastering was done by Brian Lucey at Magic Garden. On the album, the band says, "So much of this album was born out of struggle which forced us out of our comfort zones and to think beyond our own barriers. After the departure of our guitarist, Peter, we knew we had more to give to the world. This process pushed us to broaden our approach to songwriting, arranging and production. We had released a couple of preliminary singles and then the pandemic hit which halted everything for months. Brian McLaughlin (vocals) and Luke Imbusch (drums) have been making music together since their early teenage years. They formed The Rare Occasions while attending college in Boston where they met Jeremy Cohen (bass). Since then, the band have toured nationally, won the John Lennon Songwriting Contest, and released a vast catalog of music online. After the departure of a fourth member in 2018, Brian, Jeremy, and Luke started on their newest full-length record, Big Whoop.
