New Music: Bob Marley, Tom Petty, Little Richard, Jesse Colin Young, Bruce Sudano, Larkin Poe

A slew of special gift-worthy new audio collections are celebrated in my column this week. Several of the audio titles are available on vinyl as well...

Artist:
Bob Marley
Title: Uprising Live! (Eagle Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Bob Marley, Ziggy Marley, reggae music
Tell me more: In celebration of the 75th birthday of the late reggae great Bob Marley, Eagle Records and the Bob Marley Estate have released Uprising Live! on vinyl for the first time. The classic recording captures a performance on the Jamaica native's "Uprising Tour" that ran through Europe from May to July 1980 with five additional dates in the U.S. in September of that year. Sadly, it was Marley's final tour before his death from cancer in May 1981. He was only 36. Uprising Live! was recorded at Dortmund's Westfalenhalle on June 13, 1980 and is a must have for fans of the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer. After a short set featuring his backing trio I Threes (Rita Marley, Marcia Griffiths, Judy Mowatt), Marley is front and center to perform inspired and riveting versions of many of his most beloved anthems. The intoxicating likes of "Natural Mystic," "Could You Be Loved," "No Woman No Cry," "Exodus," "Redemption Song" and "Get Up, Stand Up" are among the galvanizing performances showcased on the title. In addition to the 3LP being available on black vinyl, a limited-edition colored vinyl release is also available. Marley is widely credited with introducing reggae to millions of fans around the world and his legacy is celebrated spectacularly across Uprising Live! Information: BobMarley.com.

Artist:
Tom Petty
Title: Wildflowers
& All the Rest (Warner Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers
Tell me more: From the rousing rocker "You Wreck Me" and gorgeous ballad "Crawling Back to You" to the shimmering Byrds-flavored "A Higher Place," the material across Tom Petty's Wildflowers & All the Rest reveals a sophistication, ambition and unadulterated diversity that is a reminder how great the 1994 album Wildflowers was. The expanded Wildflowers & All the Rest includes all 25 songs originally envisioned to be part of a double album; standouts on "All The Rest" (disc 2) include the dreamy "Something Could Happen," melodious "Leave Virginia Alone," Southern fried blues rocker "Confusion Wheel," Americana swoop "Harry Green" and genre-busting "Climb That Hill." There are several deluxe configurations of Wildflowers & All the Rest available; this writer has the 4-disc audio CD version with 54 tracks including seven unreleased songs; there is a disc of solo home recordings and another disc of tracks performed live. Information: TomPetty.com.

Artist:
Little Richard
Title: Southern Child (Omnivore Recordings)
You might like if you enjoy: Little Richard, James Brown, Vintage Trouble
Tell me more: The death of Little Richard on May 9, 2020 only increased interest in one of rock and roll's most influential founding fathers. Southern Child, the rocker's shelved third album for Reprise that was recorded following 1971's acclaimed King of Rock and Roll, is a predominantly country-rock effort and was unheard until the tracks appeared on a long-out-of-print label retrospective in 2005. The album was recorded in Los Angeles in spring of 1972; the LP was then mixed, mastered and handed to the label. However, Reprise instead opted to release The Second Coming in its place. Now Southern Child will be released on yellow vinyl on Friday, Nov. 27 (four bonus tracks are included on the audio CD version that follows on Dec. 4). The album is fascinating to be sure, and there are plenty of great songs here. The nuanced "If You Pick Her Too Hard (She Comes Out of Tune)," pretty "Ain't No Tellin'," uptempo "Southern Child," tender "In The Name" and zealous "Over Yonder" are among the country-flavored standouts on the set. Elsewhere the Macon, Georgia native tears it up on the funk-tinged rock 'n' soul original "Burning Up With Love," genre tossing "Last Year's Race Horse (Can't Run in This Year's Race)," and '50s-mining "I Get a Little Lonely" and bonus instrumental cut "Sneak the Freak." He also displays a way-out sense of fun via the quirky "Puppy Dog Song." Information: OmnivoreRecordings.com.

Artist:
Bruce Sudano
Title: Spirals Vol. 2...Time & The Space In Between (Purple Heart Recording Co.)
You might like if you enjoy: Jackson Browne, Nils Lofgren, Boz Scaggs
Tell me more: Singer-songwriter Bruce Sudano's latest album Spirals Vol. 2...Time & The Space In Between is a follow-up to Spirals Vol. 1...Not a Straight Line to be Found released earlier this year; it is a true celebration of bringing real life to songs that entice on first listen. A talented singer, songwriter and keyboardist, Sudano's songs capture his observations of the intimate and universal, unfolding with a rich variety of styles. "It Don't Take Much" is an uptempo jewel, while the jazz-flavored "Morning Kisses" is wistful and bolstered by Sudano's top-tier lead vocals. The winning acoustic guitar-anchored "The Promise" looks at the challenges of a relationship with an uncanny depth and beauty. The gorgeous "American Sunset" dreams of a better U.S. offered up with Springsteen-like power. The hopeful "Walking Down The Road" and "For the Sake of Humanity" undoubtedly speak for the voices of many who dream of better days ahead. Information: BruceSudano.com.

Artist:
Larkin Poe
Title: Kindred Spirits (Tricki-Woo Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Samantha Fish, The Record Company, Larkin Poe
Tell me more: Kindred Spirits marks the second full-length album from Nashville-based blues rock duo Larkin Poe issued this year. Larkin Poe has followed up the release of their June 2020 LP Self Made Man with their first-ever covers album. Kindred Spirits is filled with familiar songs reworked to perfectly fit the signature style of Megan and Rebecca Lovell in sparse versions that reveal vast emotional reaches via stirring arrangements. "Nights in White Satin" takes listeners on an otherworldly journey; singer Rebecca Lovell's soaring vocals are mirrored by Megan Lovell's deft lap steel slide guitar work. Equally stirring is their take on Phil Collins' "In The Air Tonight," a Southern gothic sortie bolstered by the sisters' artful harmonies. The siblings actually best several of the originals covered on the disc, notably Post Malone's "Take What You Want." Their masterful reworkings of Bo Diddley's "Who Do You Love," Neil Young's "Rockin' in the Free World" and Elton John's "Crocodile Rock" further certify the power of this well-crafted set. The Lickerish Quartet follows up 'Masterpiece' debut EP with 'Threesome Vol. 2,' set for release on January 8, 2021

Check out The Lickerish Quartet's hard-charging new single. It is great!

The Lickerish Quartet's first single and video, "Snollygoster Goon," out today, Friday, Nov. 20, 2020!

The Lickerish Quartet, left to right: Tim Smith, Eric Dover,
and Roger Joseph Manning Jr.

November 20, 2020 -- THE LICKERISH QUARTET—ex-Jellyfish members Roger Joseph Manning Jr. (Beck, Air, Cheap Trick, Imperial Drag), Tim Smith (Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, The Finn Brothers, Sheryl Crow, Umajets) and Eric Dover (Imperial Drag, Slash’s Snakepit, Alice Cooper, Sextus)—is standing by their promise to their fans to release more new music before the end of 2020.

Today they’re excited to announce their highly anticipated THREESOME VOL. 2 EP, which will be released January 8, 2021 via Stranger Danger Records and Tapes. Pre-orders will be available starting Friday, December 4 here. The first single and video, “Snollygoster Goon,” can be seen now on the band’s official YouTube page and streamed on Spotify, Apple Music and Amazon.

In addition to the new music, THE LICKERISH QUARTET is offering unprecedented access to the band thanks to a plethora of exciting “Experiences,” which will be available for purchase on their official website. These exclusive offers include: “Perform / Record On Your Song,” “Co-Write a Song With Us,” “Video Chat,” “Music Lesson,” and many others.

It’s the follow-up to their debut EP, THREESOME VOL. 1, lauded by critics as “a masterpiece” which was released May 15, 2020 via The Lickerish Quartet/Label Logic, as distributed by Ingrooves and can be purchased and streamed on all digital outlets.

With song titles like “Snolllygoster Goon,” “The Dream That Took Me Over,” “Sovereignty Blues,” and “Do You Feel Better?” Manning, Smith, and Dover’s undeniable chemistry can once again be found throughout THREESOME VOL. 2. The songs formed from the same sessions that begun in 2017 offer a slinky and feisty landscape of temptation, freedom of thought, hope and dreams, and a shout out to all who game the systems. An edgy second round of soaring vocals, angular guitars, and pulsing drums, enveloped by timeless keyboard arrangements requires multiple listens to appreciate fully. Manning, Dover and Smith ruminate on these new songs:

“Do You Feel Better?” as told by Tim Smith:

A romp along the primrose path of temptations, internal and external, real or imagined, the tiny demons we dance with throughout our lives.
A pulsing bass and hypnotic guitar rhythm plays like the backing band to a striptease you’ve sneaked into, and don’t know where to sit, but all are welcome!
Some things are more dangerous than others, of course, but this song is sort of a combination of letting your guard down, because of preconceived notions of what’s right or wrong, and justification  of actions you think you understand to have under control. Who knows?
Experiences do give us perspective, and this song tries to play between the id and superego--a Screwtape letter demon, and an Angel of Mercy.

“Sovereignty Blues” as told by Roger Joseph Manning Jr.:

“Fears fire’s all they’re fanning, but I won’t light up their fuse.” A tale as old as humanity. Group control over another through the tried and true tactic of fear. And always partnered with a fatal dose of “divide and conquer.” But who’s actually pulling the levers and pushing the buttons of the propaganda machine behind the Wizard of Oz’ curtain of crowd control, so to speak? Irrelevant. Ultimately, the perennial question for any person, provided they value sovereignty above all else, is: am I going to choose love over fear, peace over chaos, and God over the ego in any given moment? Everything can be taken from a man but one thing (to quote Viktor Frankl): “The last of the human freedoms, to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.” And with that in mind, grab a torch, march to your own drum, and sing along!

“The Dream That Took Me Over” as told by Eric Dover:

You are driving without a destination lured by the wanderlust of your own making.  You turn up the stereo volume and continue along, moonlight reflecting off the chrome of your vehicle.
We invite you to put the top down and take a ride into the inner dialectic of our conflicted protagonist as we answer the question: Is there equilibrium in the chaos or does science hold the key?

“Snollygoster Goon” as told by Eric Dover:

A frenetic forensic foray into classic old as civilization themes involving
greed, graft and corruption as applied to any political sphere.
The music is Adderall based in theory to reflect the absolute
breakneck speed at which the corruption flourishes. The snake oil salesman kissing babies, the saccharine unimaginative public image.

The first single from THREESOME VOL. 1, “Lighthouse Spaceship,” has had nearly 50,000 plays on Spotify since its release in March. Lyric videos for “Lighthouse Spaceship” and “Fadoodle,” as well as an acoustic performance video for “There Is a Magic Number,” can be seen on the band’s official YouTube page.

Rave reviews emerged about THREESOME VOL. 1 since before its release. Popmatters.com hailed, “Fans of both Jellyfish and Imperial Drag will rejoice at the Quartet's sound. There are doses of XTC/Queen/ELO-style harmonic structures, flirtations with progressive and psychedelic rock, and tasteful but deeply impressive musicianship.” While the Minneapolis Star-Tribune declared, “If you love the harmonies of Queen, the songwriting of Brian Wilson and the lushness of Borns, (‘Lighthouse Spaceship’) is a must-add to your playlist.” The Day (CT) proclaimed, “This mini-masterpiece offers the same joy-crafted recipe fans loved about the '90s-era band (Jellyfish): Four sugar-packed tunes of Queenisms, lick-the-spoon Wings frosting, wry Fountains of Waynery, and a quick waterside through Brian Wilson's acid-period brain.” And MusicPlayers.com concluded, ““…these tracks are dreamy good! The songs cover a variety of classic pop styles from a time when you didn’t have to clarify that pop was actually a form of rock music, with a heavy dose of ‘70s vibe and incredible vocal harmonies draped over jangly electric guitars, folky acoustics, vintage keyboards, and bass grooves that can only be called… exceptional.”

Proclaims Tim Smith, “THREESOME VOL. 2 finds our threesome in fine form, with four new songs to get you through COVID times and beyond!”

gritty, soulful and flavored by their Southern heritage.”
 - Parade

"This is a wonderful romp, the sisters are clearly having fun, and interpreting top-notch material to fit the Larkin Poe style is a productive way to kill time during a pandemic."
- American Songwriter

“Their adventurous modern attitude toward their tunes
makes all the difference.”
- The Boot

"Throughout Kindred Spirits, Larkin Poe shows an emotional depth and artistic flexibility that transforms each song into a new creation, sometimes even improving on the original. "
 - Glide Magazine

"Kindred Spirits is the perfect title for the album: The spirit of these songs lives in Larkin Poe, and they carry that spark across generations for a new group of listeners."
- No Depression

"You just can’t fake this kind of talent...Their ability to transform most of these songs in the way they did, is one more testament to their extraordinary musical ability and grit. They take chances, which in itself is fresh. They wouldn’t have gotten this far if they hadn’t."
- Rock and Blues Muse

Tomorrow,
Larkin Poe will release KINDRED SPIRITS, their first-ever covers album - a collection of stripped-back versions of both classic and new songs. KINDRED SPIRITS is Larkin Poe’s second full-length of 2020 released on their own Tricki-Woo Records. The album was self-produced by Larkin Poe from their home studio in Nashville.

Larkin Poe suprised fans by releasing their mesmerizing video for “Take What You Want” (Post Malone), ahead of the full album release tomorrow.
“Considering the nature of this record, it should come as no surprise that we applaud Post Malone for shouting out the legendary Ozzy Osbourne with a feature on his hit “Take What You Want.” This song vibrates with a classic Ozzy energy and from the moment we first heard it, we were dying to make our own stripped back, rootsy remix.”

Larkin Poe shared three tracks off the album earlier in the year: The Moody Blues’ “Nights in White Satin,” followed by their version of Lenny Kravitz’s “Fly Away” that Rolling Stone Country called “a greasy blues jam,” and finally Phil Collins’ “In The Air Tonight.” Each one of these songs has an accompanying music video made with footage that both Megan and Rebecca Lovell found and edited together in order to create just the right feel for each visual.

The GRAMMY® Award-nominated sister duo of Rebecca and Megan Lovell kicked things off in June with their fifth studio album, SELF MADE MAN, topping an array of Billboard charts while earning unanimous acclaim around the world. Instead of a summer of tour buses and packed theaters, the Atlanta-bred, Nashville-based Lovells found themselves at home, performing many livestream concerts and adding to their much-loved YouTube covers series. That got them thinking, and led to the idea for the creation of KINDRED SPIRITS, a collection of stripped-back versions of covers, both classic and new, including songs by the Allman Brothers Band, Robert Johnson, Elton John, Post Malone, Ozzy Osbourne, and more.

While 2020 was supposed to be a year of hitting the road and taking their new songs to fans around the globe, it transformed into a year of reflection, of looking inward, of looking back. But Larkin Poe being Larkin Poe, looking in and looking back for them is also looking forward as they continue to put their own signature on the traditions they embrace. Not ones to sit around and wait for something to happen, Rebecca and Megan are constantly churning and creating. No one knows what this next year holds, but rest assured Larkin Poe will find ways to keep it fun and interesting for everyone, as we are all kindred spirits.

Virtual Performance Will Stream Live From Minneapolis

November 19, 2020
The Jayhawks have announced a special live stream event on November 29 featuring the band’s classic album Sound of Lies. Released in 1997, Sound of Lies is the first album featuring the current Jayhawks lineup – Gary Louris, Marc Perlman, Karen Grotberg and Tim O’Reagan – as well as guitarist Kraig Johnson, who will also perform with the group.

Explaining the album choice, Louris says “If there is one Jayhawks record I feel strongly about playing front to back it is Sound of Lies. It holds a special place in the hearts of all band members and we look forward to performing it for you.”

The Jayhawks will perform the third and final show of their live stream series on January 10, featuring a selection of cover songs. All performances are streamed live from Slamhammer in Minneapolis, MN. Tickets range from $20-$75 and are available for purchase via Mandolin. Carrying on their success since returning to the core members from the late-90’s lineup, The Jayhawks released their new album XOXO earlier this summer. Featuring songwriting and lead vocal contributions from all four members, the album marks a new era in collaboration with their most diverse set of songs to date. In addition to performing on CBS This Morning: Saturday, the band has garnered widespread acclaim including Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, No Depression, UNCUT, American Songwriter and more. A testament to The Jayhawks’ ongoing evolution, XOXO is a sonically and emotionally cohesive album that reminds us why they remain one of the most enduring and beloved bands of the last thirty years.

Gibson honors legendary guitarist Jimi Hendrix with two Custom Shop Guitars

Jimi Hendrix™ 1969 Flying V in Aged Ebony

Jimi Hendrix™ 1967 SG Custom in Aged Polaris White

"Music doesn't lie. If there is something to be changed in this world, then it can only happen through music." --Jimi Hendrix

Jimi Hendrix performs with his 1969 Flying V at
Isle of Wight Festival on August 31, 1970.

NASHVILLE, TN (November 17, 2020) Gibson
the iconic American instrument brand, is proud to honor guitar legend Jimi Hendrix with two new Gibson signature guitars, the Jimi Hendrix™ 1969 Flying V in Aged Ebony and the Jimi Hendrix™ 1967 SG Custom in Aged Polaris White. Widely recognized as one of the most creative musicians of all time, Hendrix’s influence with his genre-defying mix of blues, funk, soul jazz and R&B still impacts musicians worldwide today. In celebration of the anniversary of Jimi Hendrix’s birthday (November 27, 1942), Gibson has gathered artists and Hendrix colleagues to launch multiple special events, interviews and performances for an “Inspired By Hendrix” series that will kick off today, November 17 across Gibson’s social pages: Gibson TVInstagram and Facebook.

Jimi Hendrix pioneered the explosive possibilities of the electric guitarHendrix’s innovative style of combining fuzz, feedback and controlled distortion created a new musical form and his influence resonates to this day. In 1969Hendrix custom-ordered a left-handed Gibson Flying V directly from Gibson. Used during the Band of Gypsys era, the following year Hendrix’s Gibson Flying V was made forever famous during his performance at the Isle of Wight Festival at Afton Downs on August 31, 1970.

The Jimi Hendrix™ 1969 Flying V has been created in both right and left-handed versions and features a Murphy Lab Aged Ebony finish and aged gold hardware. Only 125 right-handed Flying V guitars and 25 left-handed versions will be created as part of a very special run of guitars, hand-made by the expert luthiers and craftspeople of the Gibson Custom Shop in Nashville, TN. Gibson Custom Shop is the pinnacle of craftsmanship, quality, and sound excellence with each instrument celebrating Gibson’s legacy through historical accuracy and attention to detail. The Certificate of Authenticity for the Jimi Hendrix™ 1969 Flying V in Aged Ebony features an image of Jimi performing at the Isle Of Wight with the guitar.

On July 7, 1969--a few weeks prior to his legendary Woodstock performance on Aug. 18, 1969--Jimi Hendrix appeared for his national TV debut on “The Dick Cavett Show” with a performance and interview. In his interview with Cavett, Hendrix delighted the in-studio audience and those watching at home as he discussed the idea of creating an electric church stating, “It’s just a belief that I have, we do these electric guitars, everything is electrified nowadays, so therefore the belief comes through in the electricity to the people, that’s why we play so loud, because it doesn’t actually hit through the ear drums. Most groups say, ‘we’re going to play loud because they’re playing loud,’ and they’ve got this real shrill sound that’s hard. We are playing for our sound to go inside the soul of the person and see if it can awaken some-kind-of-thing in their minds, since there are so many sleeping people.”

Jimi Hendrix performs with his 1967 Gibson SG on “
The Dick Cavett Show” on September 9, 1969.

On September 9, 1969, for his second appearance on “The Dick Cavett Show” Hendrix played a right-handed 1967 Gibson SG (strung lefty) for a medley of “Izabella” and “Machine Gun.” The new limited edition Jimi Hendrix™ 1967 SG Custom in Aged Polaris White accurately replicates the exact guitar Hendrix performs on the show. The SG Custom features a Murphy Lab Aged Polaris White finish and is one of only 150 models created as part of this run, hand-made by the expert luthiers and craftspeople of the Gibson Custom Shop. The Certificate of Authenticity for the Jimi Hendrix™ 1967 SG Custom in Aged Polaris White features an image of Jimi performing on “The Dick Cavett Show” with the SG guitar.

The full packages for the new Jimi Hendrix™ 1967 SG Custom and the 1969 Flying V feature personal touches including official photos of Jimi with the guitars, as well as a collection of anecdotes and personal photographs of Jimi from his collaborator the renowned engineer and producer Eddie Kramer(Jimi Hendrix, the Beatles, Rolling Stones, David Bowie). Additionally, special guitar cases have been designed that feature interior linings which are inspired by the clothes Jimi Hendrix wore at Isle of Wight (Flying V) and on “The Dick Cavett Show” (Gibson SG). Below is Eddie Kramer’s personal photo of Jimi Hendrix with his Flying V guitar rehearsing for a performance at Madison Square Garden in New York City on May 18, 1969Kramer states, “Jimi’s hands were huge, and he used his thumb to bar the entire neck of the guitar, which yielded much of his unique tone. He is seen here quietly rehearsing on the Gibson Flying V, prior to going on stage. He used the V for playing the blues and that was his way of relaxing.”

"I don't know of a more perfect time than the present for the world to be inspired and electrified by the spirit of Jimi, embodied in these guitars!” says Janie HendrixSister of Jimi and President and CEO of Experience Hendrix L.L.C. & Authentic Hendrix LLC. “Jimi didn't play with just his hands, he played his heart and really his soul, using his guitar to create positive energy. He wanted to awaken the world with it. Gibson has harnessed some of that energy, and beautifully! It’s amazing to know that fans and those who love Jimi, and his music, will be able to plug into that power and keep his legacy alive. With Gibson, we’ve selected two of his most impressive guitars to recreate. It’s quite an homage to Jimi, and we couldn’t be more excited about what this means historically."

“Millions of people around the world of all ages have heard Jimi’s music for the first time and felt that their path was changed forever,” adds engineer and producer Eddie Kramer. “I felt that too after hearing him playing through his amp at Olympic Studios in January 1967. I was never the same after ‘experiencing that wall of sound’ and I dedicated myself to capturing that sound, which became my obsession! Jimi had a special magic that came from his brain directly to his heart and then to his fingers, exploding onto the neck of the guitar. He was the greatest guitar player the world has ever known and left a legacy of guitar magic that no one since has come close to. I am honored and privileged to have been involved with this project as Gibson has done an incredible job of recreating these guitars. I can imagine the expression on the fans' faces when they open up the guitar case and wrap their hands around the neck of one of these beauties, plug in and maybe change the world!”

“Having the opportunity to release Jimi’s 1969 Gibson Flying V and 1967 Gibson SG Custom is a dream come true, an amazing opportunity that comes with an obligation for all of us at Gibson to pay tribute to Jimi,” says Cesar Gueikian of Gibson. “He left this world way too early, but the legacy and influence he left behind is unparalleled. I am grateful for Jimi’s sister Janie Hendrix’s partnership and friendship, and that she has trusted our team to pay tribute to Jimi. This is just the beginning; we are looking forward to all that the Gibson and Authentic Hendrix partnership will bring to fans in the coming years. Additionally, working alongside Eddie Kramer, a music pioneer on so many levels, is just incredible. Eddie captured that epic sound, engineering, producing, and bringing to life that magical and game-changing Hendrix guitar style. We are honored to share Eddie’s personal photographs and the memories he experienced.”
