The Cranberries release new single "Wake Me When It's Over"

So wonderful to hear new music from one of Ireland's all-time great rock troupes...

The Cranberries release new single "Wake Me When It's Over"

New Album IN THE END, coming April 26, 2019

While many bands may aspire to be timeless, or have a sound that transcends the whims of musical fashion, The Cranberries are one of the few to have achieved that. Play one of the Irish rock group's early anthems such as "Linger" or "Dreams," and they sound as fresh - and deliver as much of an emotional sucker-punch - as when they captured a generation's hearts in the 1990s.

Now, nearly 30 years after the quartet of singer/songwriter Dolores O'Riordan, co-songwriter and lead guitarist Noel Hogan, bassist Mike Hogan and drummer Fergal Lawler first appeared, they are returning with their eighth album In the End. After the sad and unexpected passing of Dolores on January 15th 2018, it will be their last - and is among the most complete works they have ever produced.

As with all the songs on the album, the new single "Wake Me When It's Over" had been recorded as a demo by Dolores before her passing. "This was a song Dolores had been working on for a little while" Noel explains. "It's a fun song to play and it's bright and quite uplifting. It's very much a classic Dolores song with a soft verse and a massive chorus." Working with Stephen Street - who had produced four of their previous albums including Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We? and No Need To Argue - the band built the sounds around Dolores' vocals to create a classic Cranberries song. "It's hard to explain what turns a Dolores tune into a Cranberries tune. It's just the magic when we play together and understand each other so well. It's always been the same" adds Fergal.

The genesis of In The End began in May 2017 while the band were on tour. By winter of 2017 Noel and Dolores had written and demoed the eleven songs which would eventually appear on the album. "Dolores was so energized by the prospect of making this record and to getting back out on the road to play the songs live" recalls Noel.

In the End sees the band coming full circle, with a collection that evokes their very first LP. "When we listened to the demos, the three of us and Stephen were thinking 'this sounds much closer to the first album than anything else'. Dolores was singing very softly on some songs, which was closer to how she would have sung back then, and the simplicity of some of the songs as well brought us back to that time," says Noel.

As the huge wave of public adulation in the wake of Dolores' passing showed, The Cranberries may be over, in one sense - but they will forever live on in the musical pantheon.

GRAMMY and Oscar-winning, multi-platinum artist Melissa Etheridge shares her new song and video for “Wild and Lonely,” the latest track from her forthcoming album The Medicine Show, out April 12 via Concord Records. The new track is available now; watch the video here. In the video, fans get a taste of this new material performed live with footage captured on Melissa’s recent UK dates, ahead of her U.S. tour kicking off March 29 (dates below). Pre-order The Medicine Show here.

With “Wild and Lonely,” Etheridge found herself exploring themes of her past, but with a new perspective. The song is about wanting to break out of routines and reach for the extraordinary -- “an angry craving seeps into my skin,” she sings. Melissa explains, “that was like Old School Melissa. It’s fun for me to play with ‘me’ now, for 57-year-old Melissa to play with the angst. The whole song is about being on the road, being hungry, wanting.”

Paired with the title track, “Wild and Lonely” fully sets the tone for the album, sonically and emotionally. She continues, “I wanted the album to have a sound, a feel,” she says. ‘Wild and Lonely’ really dialed that in for me…the song is a perfect example of the sound I wanted.”

The release of “Wild and Lonely” follows “Faded By Design,” the first single to be unveiled from The Medicine Show, which had its premiere exclusively with Rolling Stone, who called it “a proud declaration of resilience.” For this new album, her 15th studio recording, Melissa was reunited with celebrated producer John Shanks (Keith Urban, Bon Jovi, Kelly Clarkson), and the music was recorded largely live in studio, capturing the raw emotion of the material.

Since the release of her unforgettable self-titled 1988 debut, Melissa Etheridge’s incredible career to date includes sales of over 25 million albums, 5 platinum and 3 multi-platinum records, 15 GRAMMY Award nominations and 2 wins, a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and an Academy Award for “I Need to Wake Up” from the climate change documentary An Inconvenient Truth. Her last release, MEmphis Rock & Soul, debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Blues Chart. Melissa has selflessly dedicated herself as an activist for human rights, LGBTQ issues, breast cancer awareness and alternative medical approaches.

The iconic guitarist and his expert band, augmented by Spanish singer Buika, team with legendary producer Rick Rubin

For Immediate Release – March 18, 2019 – Rock and Roll Hall of Fame guitarist Carlos Santana has shared a new track “Los Invisibles,” from his upcoming album, Africa Speaks, on Concord Records. Listen here as Santana’s otherworldly, wah-driven solos take flight on the stomping groove of “Los Invisibles.” To watch the animated cover for the track, click here.

Enlisting legendary producer Rick Rubin, the iconic guitarist and his eight-piece band (which also includes Santana’s wife, Cindy Blackman Santana, on drums), convened at Rubin’s Shangri La Studios in Malibu, and in a joyous and stimulating 10-day period they recorded an astonishing number of tracks, many of them in one take.

Another dramatic element in the creation of “Los Invisibles” came in the form of Spanish singer Buika, whose heavenly lead vocals cast a magical spell throughout the album. Santana, now 50 years into his remarkable career, has succeeded in creating a compelling, energy infused album. A vision that transcends generational, cultural and geographical boundaries. It will rank as one of his most important and memorable works.

Master songwriters shine on new releases

Americana, blues and country music is celebrated on a trio of essential new titles.

Artist: Gary Clark Jr.
Title: This Land (Warner Bros. Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Eric Gales, Walter Trout, Jimi Hendrix
Tell me more: A number of years ago genre-busting blues-rock great Walter Trout told this writer that if blues music was to survive and thrive that artists would have to continually push the boundaries of the genre forward. Listening to the latest masterwork from Austin-born singer-songwriter/guitar virtuoso Gary Clark Jr. is to hear how right Trout was; across the brilliant This Land the GRAMMY Award-winning artist proves the secret of keeping blues alive and relevant comes via stunning musical excellence and a forceful ability to tap into real world experience to keep it all real. The rousing title track that leads off the 17-track disc is aimed squarely at President Trump and modern-day racism as Clark sings "Fuck you, I'm America's son / This is where I come from," before reinforcing his resolve "This land is mine." The song's explosive finale features a mix of gospel vocals and fiery guitar work. Other songs extol a spirit of self-discovery (notably "I Walk Alone" and "Low Down Rolling Stone") that is never less than inspired. Elsewhere, Clark taps into more gentle regions of his world; the retro-styled soul gem "When I'm Gone" and beautiful R&B ballad "Pearl Cadillac" are among my favorites. It doesn't hurt that Clark can play his guitar as well as any blues rocker today and can sing with the force of Sam Cooke one moment and soulful grace of a young Al Green the next. Information: GaryClarkJr.com.

Artist: Ted Russell Kamp
Title: Walkin' Shoes (PoMo Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Waylon Jennings, Dwight Yoakam, Shooter Jennings
Tell me more: Listening to singer-songwriter Ted Russell Kamp's new LP Walkin' Shoes is to be swept up in the artist's life spent playing music and touring the world in search  and celebration  of the perfect show. The original songs splashed across the album capture the freewheeling lifestyle of a career musician. Tracks such as  "Home Away From Home," "Paid By the Mile," "This Old Guitar" and "Highway Whisper" evoke the reflective experience of life spent on the road. The rowdy countrified rocker "Tail Light Shine," yearning Americana ballad "Freeway Mona Lisa" and joyful Southern rocker "Roll On Through the Night" bolster the road-ready mindset chronicled on the terrific Walkin' Shoes. Kamp uses his wide range of bona fide talents on bass, guitar, keyboards, horns and percussion in support of his resonant baritone vocals on the outstanding 13-song release. Information: TedRussellKamp.com.

Artist: Leroy Jodie Pierson
Title: Rusty Nail (Omnivore Recordings)
You might like if you enjoy: Mississippi Fred McDowell, Robert Johnson, Son House
Tell me more: This week will see the release of a deluxe, expanded 30th anniversary reissue of blues master Leroy Jodie Pierson's 1988 Rusty Nail. Lovers of traditional Delta blues and modern Americana will all find reasons to love this outstanding disc, which features a mix of reworked classics and original material performed by Pierson, Geoffrey Sietz (drums, fiddle) and Russell Horneyer (bass). Among the great Pierson-penned cuts on the disc are the uptempo title track, slide guitar-adorned "Long Lonesome Road" and tradition-minded "Easy Rider." His approach in revisiting his own heroes' work reaches its wonderful zenith on versions of Mississippi Fred McDowell's "Highway 61" and "Write Me a Few Lines." Pierson's shining fretwork astounds on the instrumental "Mole's Moan." Among the previously-unreleased bonus tracks is a joyful take on Eddie Cochran's "Twenty Flight Rock" and his own rockabilly-tinged standout "Far and Wide." Information: OmnivoreRecordings.com.

Kiefer Sutherland set to release 'Reckless & Me' album on April 26 via BMG

I was excited to hear that Kiefer Sutherland is set to release his full-length sophomore album next month. His debut album, released in 2016, was terrific (you can read my review of Down In A Hole here), and he is equally strong live (check out my review of his April 2018 performance at The Coach House here). Here is the media release with all the great details about Sutherland's next LP...

KIEFER SUTHERLAND
SET TO RELEASE SOPHOMORE ALBUM
‘RECKLESS & ME’
WORLDWIDE ON FRIDAY, APRIL 26 VIA BMG

LATEST SINGLE, “THIS IS HOW IT’S DONE,” OUT NOW

Kiefer Sutherland is set to release his sophomore full-length album, Reckless & Me, worldwide on Friday, April 26 via BMG. The 10-track Reckless & Me delivers Sutherland’s Americana and country rock-infused songwriting style and highlights his gift of soulful storytelling. Pre-order is available now, here

The new album holds beautifully arranged ballads and authentic country rockers such as the album’s lead single, “Open Road,” and latest offering, “This Is How It’s Done” – all delivered with Sutherland’s distinctive, whiskey-soaked and gravel-laced voice.

Sutherland’s three-decade, award-winning acting career has made him a familiar face around the globe, but his other passion is music. “I asked myself, says Sutherland, “‘what is the thing that I love about acting, and music?’ ‘What is the common denominator?’ For me it's storytelling and music is a very different way of doing it.”

Produced by Jude ColeReckless & Me marks the follow up to Sutherland’s critically acclaimed debut album, Down In A Hole (2016), which had Jill Lawless of Associated Press identifying Sutherland’s “…unexpected, unvarnished authenticity as a singer/songwriter.” Consequence of Sound’s Collin Brennan simply raved Down In A Hole is a “…boozy, bad-ass country album.”

Now returning with Reckless & Me, Sutherland wants to keep touring and sharing these songs with his fans. Though he loves writing and recording, the stage holds a special place in his heart, and for the last three years, he’s toured extensively earning a reputation as a relentless road warrior.

"I couldn't have imagined the depth with which I have fallen in love with touring,” says Sutherland. “To have the opportunity to convey intimate, personal stories to an audience has proven to be priceless.”

U.S. tour dates are expected to be announced soon.

Track listing for Reckless & Me:
“Open Road “
“Something You Love”

The Waterboys share "Right Side Of Heartbreak (Wrong Side Of Love)" lyric video

Great news that The Waterboys are set to return with a new album. Hear the first song from the LP via the link embedded in the media release below...

The Waterboys New Album
Where The Action Is Out May 24

Watch the lyric video for the first single

MAY UK TOUR AND SHOWS THROUGHOUT THE SUMMER

Continuing the blazing trail set by 2015's acclaimed Modern Blues and 2017's top ten-reaching double album Out Of All This Blue, on May 24th The Waterboys will release their new album Where The Action Is, via Cooking Vinyl.

Its title inspired by the chorus of Robert Parker’s 1960s mod / northern soul classic "Let's Go Baby", Where The Action Is is a 10-song, genre-defying album, testament to the enduring talents of the band’s founder and front man Mike Scott. One of the finest British songwriters of the past four decades, his songs have been covered and/or recorded by artists including Prince, who crafted two different arrangements of Scott's classic "The Whole Of The Moon", Rod Stewart, Tom Jones, Steve Earle, and Ellie Goulding, who had a number three hit in 2013 with "How Long Will I Love You".

The title track’s update of the Parker classic – with lyrics to reflect Mike’s own preoccupations – is a cyclone of a song, all swirling Hammond, lead guitar solos played by Steve Wickham on his fuzzboxed-up fiddle, and female vocals provided by the band’s fabulous Jess and Zeenie.

More visceral rock’n’roll follows on London Mick, a tribute to legendary Clash guitarist, Mick Jones. This little stomper is rendered in Mick’s own style circa 1977. A companion piece comes in the shape Of Ladbroke Grove Symphony, a brilliant paean to the former Bohemian heart of West London.

The first single from the album, "Right Side Of Heartbreak (Wrong Side Of Love)," was recorded by Mike at home, guitar and vocal into a single microphone, then sent to Waterboys' keyboard whizz Brother Paul who added the soundscape, beats and effects at his studio in Nashville. An understated, yet infectious, soulful number addressing the trials and tribs of love, it is one of the album’s standout moments. Further experimentation can be found on "And There Is Love" (a collaboration with brilliant English producer Simon Dine) and "Take Me There I Will Follow You", with its multi-rhyming lyrics over Brother Paul’s beats.

Where The Action Is also features a song called "Out Of All This Blue", the title of the last album. Recorded for that record, but not nailed, Mike revisited it last year with some changes of style. Written for a friend who's been to a dark place, the result is a compassionate song of reassurance.

The centerpiece of the album is "In My Time On Earth", impassioned, raw and poetic, in which Mike casts a cold eye over the present day cultural landscape. The chorus tells the secret of the heart, a divine mystery which hides in plain sight.

The two closing songs are inspired by towering literary figures. "Then She Made The Lasses-O" is based on Robert Burns’ poem Green Grow The Rashes-O and the album’s final track is "Piper At The Gates Of Dawn".

This is a reading of the most beautiful part of the chapter of the same name from Kenneth Grahame's famous book The Wind In The Willows. Cut last summer in a single instrumental take at Real World Studios, with Mike adding the vocal in Dublin, the combination of Scott's exquisite and emotive reading and the wondrous soundscape provided by Brother Paul and Steve Wickham, bassist Aongus Ralston and drummer Ralph Salmins makes a transcendent piece and an extraordinary ending to the album.

Diverse in breadth, Where The Action Is is an album of incredible songwriting, experimentation and musical brilliance. It will excite Waterboys fans and new converts alike.
