Chuck Berry turns 90 today, announces new album 'Chuck' is coming in 2017

It's only Tuesday, but it is unlikely anything is bigger news than the announcement today that Chuck Berry (who turns 90 today) is going to release his first album in 38 years!

Chuck Berry turns 90, announces new 2017 album 'Chuck'

Chuck Berry, the artist who codified the sound, rhythm and language of rock and roll, celebrated his 90th birthday today with the surprise announcement that he will release a new album - titled simply CHUCK - in 2017 on Dualtone Records (an Entertainment One Company). Comprised primarily of new, original songs written, recorded and produced by the founding rock and roll legend, CHUCK is Berry's first new album in thirty-eight years. It was recorded in various studios around St. Louis and features Berry's longtime hometown backing group - including his children Charles Berry Jr. (guitar) and Ingrid Berry (harmonica), plus Jimmy Marsala (Berry's bassist of forty years), Robert Lohr (piano), and Keith Robinson (drums) - which has supported him for over two decades on over two hundred residency shows at the famed Blueberry Hill club. More details about 'CHUCK' and other Berry-related events will be revealed in the coming weeks.

"This record is dedicated to my beloved Toddy," said Berry, referring to his wife of 68 years, Themetta Berry. "My darlin' I'm growing old! I've worked on this record for a long time. Now I can hang up my shoes!"

"What an honor to be part of this new music," says Charles Berry Jr. "The St. Louis band, or as dad called us 'The Blueberry Hill Band,' fell right into the groove and followed his lead. These songs cover the spectrum from hard driving rockers to soulful thought provoking time capsules of a life's work."

Dualtone president Paul Roper adds: "It is a great honor to be a part of this record and the broader legacy of Chuck Berry. This body of work stands with the best of his career and will further cement Chuck as one of the greatest icons of rock and roll."
It would be impossible to overstate Chuck Berry's influence on popular culture around the globe (and beyond it). According to Rolling Stone magazine he "laid the groundwork for not only a rock and roll sound but a rock and roll stance," and many of his compositions - "Maybellene," "Roll Over Beethoven," "Rock and Roll Music" and others - have become the genre's canonical texts. Another, "Johnny B. Goode," is the only rock and roll song included on the Voyager Golden Record, launched into space in 1977, and intended to represent life and culture on Earth to extraterrestrial beings.
Berry received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1984, and was in the inaugural class of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees in 1986. He was awarded a Kennedy Center Honor in 2000, placed #5 on Rolling Stone's list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All-Time in 2010, and was given the first-ever PEN Award for literary excellence in lyric writing in 2012. More recently, he was the subject of a widely discussed essay by author Chuck Klosterman predicting that hundreds of years hence, Berry would be singularly synonymous with rock and roll itself, and last month his classic 1973 red Cadillac Eldorado went on display as part of the permanent collection at the Smithsonian's new National Museum of African American Culture and History.

Album reviews: Justin Hayward, Game Theory, Dwight Yoakam, Bobby Rush

Those whose musical taste runs the gamut all have something to enjoy thanks to an expansive range of highly-recommended new titles.

Artist: Justin Hayward
Title: All the Way (Eagle Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Justin Hayward, the Moody Blues
Tell me more: Singer-guitarist Justin Hayward has one of the most distinctive and enduring voices in all rock, having emerged on the scene in 1966 as singer, songwriter and guitarist with the Moody Blues. Hayward's wonderful All the Way goes a long way in shining an additional bright light on Hayward by collecting recordings that feature the artist singing songs from his solo career, as well as reworkings of material from the Moody Blues and a brand new song "The Wind Of Heaven" (the theme song for the film of the same name). The Renaissance-flavored "Broken Dream," carefree Americana-tinged "Troubadour," tender and symphonic take on Don McLean's "Vincent" and a terrific live performance of "Nights in White Satin" recorded in the late 1990s are among the memorable songs on this collection, essential for fans of Hayward and the Moody Blues. Artist: Game Theory
Title: The Big Shot Chronicles (Omnivore Recordings)
You might like if you enjoy: Let's Active, Rain Parade, R.E.M.
Tell me more: Thirty years after its original release, Game Theory's vital third album The Big Shot Chronicles has been reissued as a deluxe edition that features the original 12-track album remastered along with 13 bonus tracks (nine of which are previously unissued). Game Theory singer-songwriter-guitarist Scott Miller (who sadly died in 2013; he was only 53) was a unique talent who crafted songs that tapped into youthful fervor while the songs themselves were bolstered by a mix of jangly melodies and smart indie rock arrangements. The range of material on Omnivore Recordings' new edition of "The Big Shot Chronicles" includes the driving "Erica's Word" (featuring a wistful vocal performance and great lead guitar solo courtesy of Miller), crackling "Make Any Vows," poignant "Regenisraen" and psychedelic-flavored "Too Closely." Among the interesting bonus tracks is an instrumental version of Vince Guaraldi's "Linus And Lucy." The CD booklet is wonderful, spanning 28 pages and featuring a wealth of photos, production notes and liner notes that shed insight into Game Theory's amazing The Big Shot Chronicles. Artist: Dwight Yoakam
Title: Swimmin' Pools, Movie Stars... (Sugar Hill)
You might like if you enjoy: Bill Monroe, Ralph Stanley
Tell me more: Groundbreaking country singer-songwriter Dwight Yoakam has returned to his rural Kentucky roots with his first-ever, bluegrass-centered full-length album Swimmin' Pools, Movie Stars… (out now via Sugar Hill Records). The uptempo "What I Don't Know," more introspective "These Arms," breezy "Guitars, Cadillacs" and rip roaring "Gone (That'll Be Me)" shine here, all showcasing Yoakam's potent and authentic vocals. Everywhere lush arrangements filled with strumming guitars, shimmering mandolin, plucking banjo and expert fiddle work drape the songs with a wonderful Appalachia glow. Yoakam's reworked originals are not the only prize here; a touching version of "Purple Rain" recorded in the immediate aftermath of Prince's death on April 21, 2016 closes out the dozen-song collection. Artist: Bobby Rush
Title: Porcupine Meat (Rounder Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Doyle Bramhall II, Joe Bonamassa, Keb' Mo'
Tell me more: Eighty-two years young, Bobby Rush has returned with the intoxicating Porcupine Meat, a dozen-track set that allows ample time for the blues singer to deliver one of the best albums of his long and celebrated career. Mixing up his blues-based sound with funk, soul, R&B and related styles, Rush is unique for genre heroes now in their eighties who still push forward as a singer, songwriter and sonic explorer. Porcupine Meat features a wealth of potent material; the affecting R&B first-person account of racial injustice "Got Me Accused" features Rush as a double threat courtesy of a nuanced and affecting vocal performance and moving blues harp solo. Later, Rush lives up to the title of the glorious "Funk o' de Funk" with a infectious performance while the soulful "Me, Myself and I" looks at romantic loss with real life honesty with a guest appearance from guitar great Joe Bonamassa that brings additional power to the blues ballad with his soaring soloing. 'Blindman' with Ringo Starr set for DVD/Digital release November 4, 2016

This is very cool. I can't wait to catch Ringo Starr in concert in Costa Mesa on October 22, and I definitely can't wait to see "Blindman." I've never seen it!

ABKCO TO RELEASE RESTORED 1971 RINGO STARR SPAGHETTI WESTERN BLINDMAN ON DVD/DIGITAL NOV. 4
+ Screenings This Month In New York and San Francisco

On November 4, ABKCO Films will release a newly restored version of Blindman, the 1971 cult Spaghetti Western starring Tony Anthony and Ringo Starr and directed by Ferdinando Baldi (David and Goliath starring Orson Welles). The DVD, Blu-ray and digital download versions are in HD, mastered from the original 35mm negative. The release is preceded by midnight theatrical screenings at IFC Center in New York City on October 7 and 8, and a double feature with Jodorowsky’s El Topo at the Castro Theater in San Francisco on October 21.

Ron Kretsch recently wrote about Blindman for Dangerous Minds, noting, “It’s really quite good.”  He went on state, “This isn’t just celebrity stunt casting, [Ringo] actually gives the role of ‘lovesick bandito’ some heft . . . he plays the part so well. (And now I’ll be earwormed with Ringo’s version of ‘Act Naturally’ for a few hours.)”

Blindman is Baldi’s take on the immensely popular Zatoichi films of Japan. A blind gunman (Tony Anthony) escorts a group of fifty women to Texas, where they are to be married to miners. When the mail order brides are kidnapped by a gang working for two Mexican banditos (one of whom is played by Starr) and their villainous sister, the captors find out their opponent, dependent on his horse and his hearing, is a deadlier challenge than they might have expected. Full of humor, sarcasm and featuring an unforgettable 5.1 audio soundtrack by Stelvio Cipriani, Blindman is one of the most stylish and absurdist of the Spaghetti Westerns from the early ‘70s.

Shot at Cinecitta Studios in Rome, and on location in southern Spain, Blindman was co-produced by Tony Anthony, Allen Klein and Saul Swimmer, the latter of whom co-produced the Beatles film Let It Be and directed George Harrison’s The Concert for BangladeshBlindman features many classic Spaghetti Western locations in their heyday – the Western town of Decorados in the Tabernas desert, the massive fort built for the American film El Condor, the railroad station from Once Upon a Time in the West, the cortijo from Duck, You Sucker, and the “mission” location featured in The Bounty Killer and Death Rides a Horse

In his book 10,000 Ways to Die: A Director’s Take on the Spaghetti Western, Alex Cox (Repo ManSid and Nancy) describes the production design by Gastone Carsetti in Blindman as being “exceptionally fine,” adding, “his triumphs are a ghost ranch, surrounded by a mesa-sized cemetery, and Domingo’s town – which . . . he insists on painting black, anticipating High Plains Drifter’s city-painting schemes by several years. The images of a jet-black settlement with a white-walled church, surrounded by the Tabernas desert, are sensational.”

Ringo Starr, having just ignited his solo career the year before, amidst of the dissolution of the Beatles, was so imbued with his role in Blindman that he recorded a song describing the premise of the film. The b-side to his 1972 single “Back Off Boogaloo,” the aptly titled “Blindman” was produced by Klaus Voormann, a member of Plastic Ono Band and cover art designer of the Beatles’ Revolver.

Sights and Sounds: The Rolling Stones, Rush, Gregory Porter

Big, BIG news as it relates to the Rolling Stones this morning. I also have other news to share about forthcoming releases including a multi-format release from Gregory Porter ...

The Rolling Stones announce their return to the blues with their highly-anticipated new album:

‘BLUE & LONESOME’ OUT ON DECEMBER 2

Five decades in the making and just three days to record

On December 2, 2016The Rolling Stones will release Blue & Lonesome, their first studio album in over a decade. Recorded in just three days in London, England, ‘Blue & Lonesome’ takes the band back to their roots and the passion for blues music which has always been at the heart and soul of The Rolling Stones.

Blue & Lonesome is available in various formats and will be released on December 2, 2016 by Interscope Records. It was produced by Don Was and The Glimmer Twins and is available for pre-order worldwide from today, October 6th, at 9am EST in the USA and 2pm in the UK (equivalent times worldwide), go to rollingstones.com.

The album was recorded over the course of just three days in December last year at British Grove Studios in West London, just a stone’s throw from Richmond and Eel Pie Island where the Stones started out as a young blues band playing pubs and clubs.

Their approach to the album was that it should be spontaneous and played live in the studio without overdubs. The band - Mick Jagger (vocals & harp), Keith Richards (guitar), Charlie Watts (drums), and Ronnie Wood (guitar) were joined by their long time touring sidemen Darryl Jones (bass), Chuck Leavell (keyboards) and Matt Clifford (keyboards) and, for two of the twelve tracks, by old friend Eric Clapton, who happened to be in the next studio making his own album.

Blue & Lonesome sees the Rolling Stones tipping their hats to their early days as a blues band when they played the music of Jimmy Reed, Willie Dixon, Eddie Taylor, Little Walter and Howlin’ Wolf - artists whose songs are featured on this album.

The tracks are - Just Your Fool, Commit A Crime, Blue and Lonesome, All Of Your Love, I Gotta Go, Everybody Knows About My Good Thing, Ride ‘Em On Down, Hate To See You Go, Hoo Doo Blues, Little Rain, Just Like I Treat You, I Can’t Quit You Baby.

“This album is manifest testament to the purity of their love for making music, and the blues is, for the Stones, the fountainhead of everything they do.” Don Was, Co-Producer of ‘Blue & Lonesome’

THE ROLLING STONES - ‘BLUE & LONESOME’ WILL BE RELEASED BY INTERSCOPE RECORDS IN THE UNITED STATES ON DECEMBER 2, 2016
