Moby's 'Music From Porcelain' out now

MEDIA RELEASE - “Music From Porcelain” is the companion album to Moby’s memoirs book entitled, Porcelain, (Penguin Press; May 17). The album is a collection of newly re-mastered versions of classics including “Go!,” “Honey,” “Natural Blues” and “Bodyrock,” among many others, combined with a hard to get collection of classic Electronic music recordings from artists from 808 State to A Tribe Call Quest. “Music From Porcelain” is released June 10th on Thrive Music.

“The music in 'porcelain' is almost as important a character in the book as i am. to that end I've compiled a collection of songs written about in the book, both mine and other people's, in a little time capsule to accompany it. These songs all remind me of the New York that I lived in and was smitten with from 1989 – 1999,” Moby says.

Moby was an unlikely fit in the club scene of late ‘80s and early ‘90s New York City. A devout Christian, vegan, straight white kid from the suburbs, he was an outlier in a world dominated by people of color, gays, drug use and general debauchery. And yet, Moby was able to not only to break into one of the most difficult scenes in the entertainment field, but to also build a thriving career and go on to become one of the most interesting and iconic musicians of our time. By turns funny, disquieting, and moving, his unforgettable memoir, PORCELAIN, he recounts the ups and downs of his fledgling career.

In the midst of this organized chaos, Moby remains open to new people and experiences in a way that feels not only refreshing, but also nearly impossible in today’s New York. As a result, he finds himself crossing paths with some of the most memorable artist to come out of that era: Madonna, Run-DMC, Jeff Buckley, Sonic Youth. Moby’s is a wide-eyed ride: he gets cursed at publicly for ruining a freestyle session with Darryl McDaniels when he accidentally bumps the turntable, he shares a bathroom—and falling in love at first sight—with a dominatrix at a swingers party, and unwilling to turn down work, spins three shows in one night in England. His humility, curiosity, work ethic, and earnest desire bring joy to people through his work lead to success and an the inspiring story of one of the most influential musicians in modern history.

In support of the release there will also be a set of remixes of Moby’s classic songs coming soon featuring Hardwell, Cedric Gervais, Arty, Loco Dice, among others.

In this episode of Set List, Live Nation TV sits down with Hall & Oates in New York to talk about the story behind their hit "Sara Smile," and go deep about some of their (many) acclaimed hits, like "She's Gone" and "Maneater."

Over the course of the episode, Daryl and John thoughtfully look back on their formative beginnings and biggest moments — from the first R&B station in Ohio that decided to play "Sarah Smile" to the humble reggae origins of "Maneater." "We've always felt like strangers at the party," explains Hall. "It wasn't about fame or fortune, it was just about expressing yourself."

Since forming Hall & Oates in 1970, the Philadelphia songwriters have carved out a sound that's now their signature, a playful twist of jazz, rock, and blue eyed soul that's as catchy as it is genre-bending. Eighth release in series highlights 80's Supergroup's biggest hits including "Sole Survivor," "Heat of the Moment," more

The BRITISH LIVE PERFORMANCE SERIES from Rainman Records is set to release a hit-packed live album from 80's supergroup ASIA.  This release marks theBritish Live Performance Series' eighth installment, with previous live sets from Glen Campbell, Joe Jackson, Belinda Carlisle and more (see below).  Due out June 24, the album celebrates the legacy of the band which debuted in 1982 with their quadruple-platinum eponymous LP.

 

Formed by musicians who were already established stars in their own right and with early-Eighties rock music in a post-punk, post-disco turmoil, the seasoned quartet sailed in to fill the gap. Each member each came with a proven pedigree from Seventies megabands King Crimson (John Wetton), Emerson Lake and Palmer (drummer Carl Palmer), Yes (guitarist Steve Howe) and Buggles (keyboardist Geoff Downes). But it was the excellence of their music that sold millions of records worldwide.

 

Rock history records Asia as the first supergroup of the Eighties, a leviathan that sold more than six million copies worldwide of its eponymous first album in little more than a year thanks to a combination of classic radio-friendly pop songs and virtuoso musicianship. Recorded in 1990 in Nottingham, England, the album finds the group in epic form. Founder members John Wetton, drummer Carl Palmer and keyboardist Geoff Downes link with guitarist Pat Thrall to present a live greatest hits, from the three major singles - "Heat Of The Moment," "Only Time Will Tell" and "Sole Survivor" - from their first album through to later highlights Go and Voice Of America.  With the help of label boss David Geffen and manager John Kalodner, the band would become one of MTV's biggest stars then, and a classic rock staple now.

 

Our show captures Asia at their best - in concert, where their virtuoso musicianship can be best appreciated. No studio trickery is needed to recreate the music for which the band is rightly known. Defiantly rock-based anthems like "Time Again" and "The Heat Goes On" that had illuminated the sterile, electronic Eighties remained relevant in a new decade. As Carl Palmer put it, this was - and is - "English rock with a technical side - sophisticated rock mixed in with melodies and singles."

Recently, the official music video for “Circadian Rhythm (Last Dance)” premiered on Stereogum. Of the track, Stereogum says it’s, “a healthy dose of melodrama, smoke, and glitter, the band shows off their ability to produce visuals to match their high-energy dream-pop sound.” The song is the latest single offBetter Nature, out now on New Machine Recordings.  “Circadian Rhythm (Last Dance)” features a duet between lead singer Brian Aubert and bassist Nikki Monninger. Lead vocalist Brian Aubert explains, “I wrote the music for this song but Nikki wrote the lyrics to it. It’s really an homage to a friend of hers that passed away recently. I think it’s the first time Nikki wrote most of the lyrics. We knew we were going to do this duet together and I really knew she had something going on that needed to come out and I’m happy this was the vessel for it.”

The band’s critically acclaimed album, Better Nature, is available now via the band’s newly formed label New Machine Recordings. Under The Radar calls the album “...as propulsive and arena-ready as ever” while the LA Times says it “has a clarity and inventiveness that’s rare for a big band a decade into its career.”

Better Nature is Silversun Pickups’ first new album in more than three years and was produced by Jacknife Lee (U2, Two Door Cinema Club, Crystal Castles), with whom they collaborated on 2012’sNeck Of The Woods. The album was mixed by Grammy award-winning engineer Alan Moulder (My Bloody Valentine, Nine Inch Nails, Royal Blood).

In August, the band released the first single “Nightlight,” which was accompanied by a hallucinatory music film written and directed by legendary filmmaker Mark Pellington (Arlington Road, The Mothman Prophecies, Foo Fighters, Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam). “Nightlight,” which Absolute Punk called “one of the most deliriously catchy and undeniably immediate songs Silversun has made in their careers,” reached Top 5 on the Billboard and Alternative Radio Charts.

Coachella and Stagecoach veterans display brilliance on new albums

My recent treks to the Coachella and Stagecoach festivals reminded me yet again about the never-ending joy of musical discovery. In this column I feature the latest albums from several artists I caught in Indio this year, as well as masterworks from Coachella 2012 headliner Radiohead and Stagecoach 2012 standout the Jayhawks.


Artist: Radiohead
Title: A Moon Shaped Pool (TBA)
You might like if you enjoy: Radiohead, Atoms for Peace
Tell me more: Any doubts about whether Radiohead remains rock's greatest contemporary artist were solidified with the release of the band's ninth studio album A Moon Shaped Pool on May 8, 2016. Listening to the 11-track release is to be immersed in a world blending acoustic, symphonic and electronic soundscapes adorned with intoxicating rhythms, sound effects and singer Thom Yorke's ethereal vocals. "Burn the Witch" and "Tinker Tailor Soldier Sailor Rich Man Poor Man Beggar Man Thief" in particular benefit from the use of orchestra, while the more intimate "Daydreaming" evokes just as much power with a quiet intro anchored around Yorke's high-reaching vocals and a piano artfully layered with other sounds; after four minutes or so the song's dynamics explode into an orchestral eruption that is both beautiful and, ultimately, unsettling via some guttural noises. A fearless and masterful return. Although A Moon Shaped Pool was only released digitally on May 8, the album will be released on audio CD and vinyl on June 17. Information: radiohead.com.

Tell me more: Just as Radiohead was formed in 1985 and has served as a groundbreaking force in the alt rock universe since the early '90s, the Minneapolis-spawned Jayhawks also formed in 1985 and have proved to be an enduring and essential artist on the Americana and alternative country music scene. On the group's recently-issued ninth album Paging Mr. Proust, long-time band mates Gary Louris (lead vocals, guitar), Karen Grotberg (keyboards, vocals), Marc Perlman (bass), Tim O'Reagan (vocals, drums, percussion) and newcomer Kraig Johnson (electric guitar) deliver shimmering power-pop ("I'll Be Your Key," "Leaving the Monsters Behind"), baroque pop ("Pretty Roses in Your Hair," "Isabel's Daughter") and alt country ("The Devil Is In Her Eye"). Produced by Peter Buck (of R.E.M. fame), Tucker Martine and Louris, Paging Mr. Proust moves the Jayhawks forward while showcasing the impeccable song craft, amazing vocal harmonies and instrumental chops that have made the band an American treasure for three decades. Title: ArrangingTime (Capitol)
You might like if you enjoy: Beck, Ron Sexsmith
Tell me more: Singer-songwriter Pete Yorn turned in one of the strongest sets at Weekend #2 of Coachella, so it isn't all surprising that his latest studio disc ArrangingTime is such a joy. There is a hypnotic quality to the sound of the album overall, even while all the songs stand on their own and enjoy specific arcs. While the songs are accessible, there is an artistry that means the rich nuances of the songs reveal themselves more with each listen. My favorites include folk rocker "Halifax," the lush "She Was Weird" and irresistible "Tomorrow." Information: peteyorn.com.

Artist: The Heavy
Title: Hurt & The Merciless (Bad Son Recording Company)
You might like if you enjoy: Vintage Trouble
Tell me more: Thriving on heavy funky grooves and garage band rock 'n' roll, the Heavy's Hurt & The Merciless provides one catchy track after another. In-the-pocket rhythms, blasting horns, spirited vocals from Kelvin Swaby and rollicking arrangements fuel a dynamic album that is a blast from start to finish.  While uptempo burners are the rule (just listen to the pumping "Since You Been Gone" and rocking "What Happened to the Love?"), the Heavy's lovely Latin-flavored ballad "Nobody's Hero" and the retro "Miss California" are welcome detours.
