'Bryan Adams in Concert' coming to Great Performances on PBS
With his distinctive vocals, the Canadian born singer-songwriter has been one of the most successful international performers in contemporary rock music, selling over 65 million records in a career that has spanned more than three decades.
Adams rose to fame with his Cuts Like a Knife album and became a global star with his 1984 album Reckless. In 1991, his Waking Up the Neighbours album included the single “(Everything I Do) I Do It for You,” which went on to become one of the best-selling singles of all time.

Adams current album, Tracks of My Years, is his first studio release in six years, and features a wide range of musical styles reflective of a time when rock was played alongside pop, country and R&B. Great Performances captures Adams in peak performance during his current world tour, performing favorites from the new album as well as his own chart-topping hits. The performance – including “Here I Am,” “Summer of ‘69,” “Heaven,” and “Straight from the Heart” — was filmed at Toronto’s Elgin Theater in July 2014, and marks the singer’s PBS debut.

Sights and Sounds: Blur, The Guess Who, Bill Kreutzmann, Steve Earle
Happy Friday everybody! While I will be trying to catch up on a few more Academy Awards-minded movies over the weekend leading up to the Oscars (I caught the James Brown biopic Get On Up last week and do recommend that one), I still wanted to share a few bits of music news headed into the weekend!You can stream "Go Out" from Blur's forthcoming album The Magic Whip via the link here.
Audio Fidelity has announced plans to release The Best Of The Guess Who on limited edition 4.0 Quad Hybrid SACD.
Here are highlights of the media release on the forthcoming release, as well as a look at the great cover artwork too:
Marshall Blonstein's Audio Fidelity will be releasing The Guess Who's The Best Of The Guess Who album on Limited Edition 4.0 Quad Hybrid SACD in April 2015. They didn't have street cred; they didn't look like stars; and they weren't considered "cool" by the ultra hip and snooty underground FM rock crowd. But over the course of their career, The Guess Who created some of the most transcendent and electrifying pop music of the Seventies. The Guess Who stubbornly flew in the face of fashion, trends, and the flourishing progressive rock movement, and built an enduring body of work that illuminates their status as immensely gifted pop rock practitioners.
Though influenced by the British Invasion, The Guess Who were purely Canadian rockers. The band scored a string of Top Ten hits in the late '60s and early '70s, including the psychedelic-romantic smash "These Eyes" and the riff-rocking anthem "American Woman." The band was a huge success in the States and even performed at President Nixon's inaugural ball (with the acerbic "American Woman" conspicuously omitted from the set list).
Burton Cummings' throaty baritone vocals and guitarist Randy Bachman's theatrical riffs gave the band their versatile sound - and their rocking classics sound as vital today as they did when they were first released.
As a special bonus that audiophiles and fans alike are sure to enjoy, Audio Fidelity has included in each package a miniature version of the coveted psychedelic poster that was contained in the original 1971 vinyl album release!

Bill Kreutzmann, a founding member and drummer for every one of The Grateful Dead's 2,300+ concerts, has penned a memoir DEAL: My Three Decades of Drumming, Dreams, and Drugs with the Grateful Dead (St. Martin's Press) set for release on May 5, 2015. The tell-all book will provide Kreutzmann to reflect on the band's 50th anniversary while recalling sharing the stage with his legendary band mates as well as the fabled likes of Janis Joplin, Bob Dylan and The Who.

Blur (singer Damon Albarn, guitarist Graham Coxon, drummer Dave Rowntree and bassist Alex James) will headline the aptly-named British Summer Time concert in Hyde Park in London on June 20, 2015; this will mark the fourth time Blur has performed at the event.

The original version of "Sacred" features the legendary duo's latest, Richard X-produced album, The Violet Flame. The single, the third to have been added to the BBC Radio 2 playlist, will feature the single mix and a live rehearsal version of "Sacred" alongside remixes from the likes of Grammy-nominated Chris Cox, Rich B & Phil Marriott, Vibora Park, 88Ninety and Black Light Odyssey.

Finally, Carbon Leaf (in partnership with The Virginia Museum of Radio & Concert Entertainment) have announced the 2nd Annual Carbon Leaf's Ragtime Carnival at Pocahontas State Park.
This year the festival will be held May 15 and 16, 2015, and feature 13 bands on two stages. Carbon Leaf will perform three sets over the two-day weekend; an acoustic set Saturday morning, and full-band performances closing out each night. Additional artists performing at the event include actor/director Jeff Daniels with the Ben Daniels Band, Trigger Hippy featuring Joan Osborne and Jackie Greene, as well as Charlottesville-based band Sons of Bill.

1965-1967 Recordings Showcase Jimi Hendrix's Brilliance Just Before His Ascent to Stardom
Experience Hendrix L.L.C. and Legacy Recordings are releasing You Can't Use My Name: Curtis Knight & The Squires (Featuring Jimi Hendrix) The RSVP/PPX Sessions – the first in a series that presents these recordings in their original context. The specially priced 14-track collection, taken from sessions in 1965 and 1966 [plus one July 1967 recording], will be available on CD and 150 gram LP on March 24, 2015.
In the mid 1960s, before launching a solo career that has profoundly influenced and altered the course of popular music, Jimi Hendrix was a little known sideman, working for short periods with a variety of artists including the Isley Brothers, Don Covay, Little Richard, and the Harlem-based R&B combo Curtis Knight & The Squires.
Ed Chalpin was an entrepreneur and record producer who founded PPX International, Inc. in 1960. He had created a lucrative business by recording cover versions of top US hits for foreign record companies, who then overdubbed translated lyrics. In addition to creating remakes for foreign markets, Chalpin had begun to produce original material at his New York recording facility Studio 76 that he would license to various record labels. Chalpin auditioned Curtis Knight in 1965 and agreed to manage and produce him.
In October 1965, Knight introduced Jimmy Hendrix to Chalpin. After their initial recording session yielded Knight's "How Would You Feel," Chalpin signed Jimi Hendrix to a notorious three-year recording contract for $1.00 and a 1% royalty. Hendrix had thought he was signing a release as a backing musician, later noting, "I took it as an insure of getting paid for the session…" In 1966, Chalpin licensed two singles from Hendrix's sessions with Curtis Knight to RSVP Records, a New York based independent label owned by Jerry Simon. "How Would You Feel" b/w "Welcome Home" and "Hornet's Nest" b/w "Knock Yourself Out." The latter two instrumentals were composed by Hendrix and stand as the first ever commercial release of his own music. Both of these efforts missed the charts entirely and, as a result, Simon's interest in the group waned and RSVP did not issue a third single.
Hendrix would continue to intermittently perform as a member of Curtis Knight & The Squires in 1966. He had also formed his own group Jimmy James & The Blue Flames in Greenwich Village. It was there where Animals bassist Chas Chandler spotted Hendrix performing "Hey Joe" at the Cafe Wha?. He offered to take Hendrix to London to record a version of the song and serve as his producer.
In September 1966, Chandler escorted Hendrix from New York to London to make good on his promise. Under his guidance, Hendrix formed the Jimi Hendrix Experience with drummer Mitch Mitchell and bassist Noel Redding. Chandler rushed them into the recording studio, pawning his bass guitar to help fund the group. Chandler's faith was rewarded in December 1966 when "Hey Joe" became a hit in England and soon throughout Europe. "Purple Haze" and "The Wind Cries Mary" followed in quick succession and were even more successful. In a matter of months, Hendrix had transformed from a struggling, little known sideman to the brightest new star in popular music.
Ed Chalpin had learned of Hendrix's international success via reports in industry trade journals. Beginning in May 1967, Chalpin had begun notifying every company he could identify as doing business with Hendrix that his company PPX had previously signed the guitarist to an exclusive three year contract covering the term between October 1965 and October 1968.
Beginning with December 1967's Get That Feeling, Chalpin began to compile and license albums featuring the master recordings Hendrix had recorded as a sideman to Knight. Get That Feeling was followed by October 1968's Flashing. Hendrix's burgeoning fan base was confused by the lack of liner notes or accurate cover imagery [Get That Feeling featured a photograph of Hendrix performing at the Monterey Pop Festival] as these albums gave full artist billing to Jimi Hendrix.
Jimi Hendrix was hamstrung throughout his career by litigation over these recordings in the US and UK and these fights continued until his family ultimately prevailed in litigation against Ed Chalpin and PPX in 2003. Experience Hendrix has since acquired all of the recordings controlled by Chalpin and PPX and this compilation stands as their first attempt to present this music in its original context.
You Can't Use My Name kicks off with "How Would You Feel," a 1966 single based in part on Bob Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone." "How Would You Feel" tackles sensitive race issues, pre-dating by a few years the explosion of popular R&B acts latching onto the thriving Black Power movement. Its b-side "Welcome Home" is also featured on the collection. These tracks represent a musical touchstone, as Hendrix (listed as "Jimmy Hendrix") received his first ever label credit as an arranger of both songs. Also included is the instrumental "Hornet's Nest" and its b-side "Knock Yourself Out [Flying On Instruments]," both of which were composed by Hendrix.
Capping off You Can't Use My Name is the August 1967 track that spawned its namesake. Heard for the first time is the fascinating section of studio chatter that precedes a take of "Gloomy Monday," wherein Hendrix repeatedly requests that Chalpin not use his name in the marketing of the recording, and Chalpin agrees, albeit, ambiguously. Already months deep into litigation, it can only be theorized that Hendrix continued to participate in sessions with Chalpin as a gesture of goodwill in the hope that all would be forgiven. It didn't pan out that way, and the dialog is an interesting footnote to the complicated history between the two parties.

"What makes them so special is that they provide an honest look at a great artist during the pivotal time when he was on the cusp of his breakthrough.. a time when Jimi's number one priority was playing and recording, and this set captures him doing just that, both as a collaborator and an innovator. They are more than just recordings, they represent a significant segment in the timeline of Jimi's musical existence."
Original Jimi Hendrix Experience recording engineer Eddie Kramer recently went to pain-staking lengths to maximize the audio quality on the collection. "We've taken every single performance as far back as we could go in terms of source and we came up with the best original performances, stripped them back and re-mixed them and made what we feel is the best representation of those recordings," says Kramer. "It's a continuing archeological sound dig which is to say you sweep away the dirt with a fine brush and find the gem hidden therein. It's what I call 'forensic audio' where we use every available piece of outboard gear and plug-ins and whatever tools are available to us. It's been hours and hours of intensive work but it's truly been fun to find the best performances and to make sense out of them."
These recordings made for PPX and RSVP are part of Jimi Hendrix's extraordinary legacy. They neatly align with those other sessions Hendrix participated in during this same era as a sideman for other acts. Absent the confusion as to Hendrix's true involvement, these recordings provide a snapshot of his development immediately prior to his discovery by Chas Chandler. "I was a backing musician playing guitar," Hendrix explained in a 1967 interview. "I was always kept in the background, but I was thinking all the time about what I wanted to do." Enjoyed in this context, these Curtis Knight sessions showcase his evolving technique and emerging brilliance.

Blues Foundation announces 2015 Blues Hall of Fame Inductees
February 18, 2015 - Memphis, TN - The Blues Foundation announces the selection of three living performers to be inducted into its Blues Hall of Fame. The three are Tommy Brown, Eric Clapton and Little Richard. They join more than 130 performers who have been inducted each year beginning in 1980.
Eric Clapton has been tapped for induction into the Blues Hall of Fame for his many musical achievements as well as for his role as a popularizer of the entire genre. He brought the blues to audiences in his native Britain and throughout the world, illuminating the work of the original blues artists who inspired him. With his induction, Little Richard joins an elite group of Blues Hall of Fame icons including Fats Domino, Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley who built upon rock 'n’ roll’s foundation in the blues. His earliest recordings were in the blues vein and, throughout his career, he continued to employ a blues format in his work. In the early ‘50s Tommy Brown broke through nationally fronting the Griffin Brothers Orchestra with the #1 hit “Weepin’ & Cryin’.” He brought his intuitive sense of showmanship to the blues over a career that has now spanned over 75 years.

2015 Blues Hall of Fame Inductees
Tommy Brown, hailed during the 1950s as "one of the most dynamic entertainers in show business," has spent most of the past four decades out of the performing spotlight, but his resume of vintage records, onstage theatrics and a 21st century career revival have brought him long overdue recognition among current blues aficionados. Brown was a friend of fellow Georgia singer and 2015 Blues Hall of Fame inductee Little Richard when both were starting out, and he remembers letting Richard sleep in his station wagon when times were tough. A young James Brown picked up cues for his fabled stage show from both of them.
Brown was born in Atlanta on May 27, 1931, and began performing as a dancer when he was in the first grade. He also worked as a drummer before he became a stand-up singer. But he did much more than stand, as the Atlanta Daily World reported in 1953: ". . . he jumped off the stage, fell prostrate on the floor, got up, banged his head on the wall then fell down on his knees and wailed the blues." Brown began recording in 1950 and sang (and sobbed) on the No. 1 R&B hit Weepin' and Cryin' with the Griffin Brothers in 1951. The song evolved from a real life experience, when he broke down while singing onstage as he saw his fiance´ walk in with another man. Humor was an important part of his show, however, and in the 1960s he began performing and recording as a comedian.
After stays in St. Louis, Chicago (where he teamed on shows with Otis Clay), and New York, Brown settled back in Atlanta in 1977 to run the Landmark West Personal Care Center, a business his mother had founded. After fans sought him out to interview him and book him on festivals in the U.S. and Europe, he began traveling and recording again in the new millenium. His Classic Tommy Brown CD, on his own Chittlin' Circuit label, reintroduced listeners to the rocking, crying and shouting blues he waxed on labels such as Savoy, King, United and Imperial. "I'm looking to retire at 103." he says, "and take up a new profession -- teach people how to love."
Eric Clapton has been tapped for Blues Hall of Fame induction not only for his many achievements during a long and successful career but also for his role as a popularizer who has brought the blues to audiences far more widespread than those reached by the original bluesmen whose music inspired him. Clapton has consistently included blues material on albums that have registered in the upper echelons of the pop music charts. In the process Clapton has not only brought new listeners into the blues fold but has generated royalties for the blues legends whose songs he has covered--royalties often well in excess of those the bluesmen earned from their own recordings.
The first British musician inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame, Clapton was born in Ripley, Surrey, on March 30, 1945. He identified with the power and uplifting spirit of the blues from his early days as a guitarist, and amidst forays into other genres has always remained a blues devotee. At the age of 18, as a member of the Yardbirds, he played guitar on a Sonny Boy Williamson LP, and soon did sessions with bluesmen Otis Spann and Champion Jack Dupree, not to mention the influential work he did with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Cream and Blind Faith. In between his many subsequent albums and world tours, he played on Howlin' Wolf's London Sessions and recorded with several of his early guitar heroes, including B.B. King, Freddie King, Buddy Guy, Chuck Berry, John Lee Hooker and Otis Rush.
Clapton topped the Billboard charts with an album of blues standards, From the Cradle, in 1994, and with the blues-laden Unplugged album in 1992, and hit the top ten with his Robert Johnson tribute, Me and Mr. Johnson in 2004 and his collaboration with B.B. King, Riding With the King, in 2000. Clapton's battle with drug and alcohol addiction led him to found the Crossroads Centre rehab facility in Antigua in 1998. His Crossroads Guitar Festival is both a showcase for many of the world's leading guitarists and a fundraiser for the Crossroads Centre.
Little Richard joins an elite group of Blues Hall of Fame icons, including Fats Domino, Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley, who built rock 'n' roll from a foundation in the blues. Richard's earliest recordings were in the blues vein and he continued to employ a blues format, often accelerated to a frenzied tempo, on many of his sessions. By bandleader Johnny Otis' recollections from witnessing his first "beautiful, bizarre and exotic" Little Richard performance, Richard exclaimed, "This is Little Richard, the King of the Blues! And the Queen, too!" Gospel was also a profound force in Little Richard's life and music, and at times during his career he left the rock 'n' roll stage to study, preach and sing the gospel, only to return to the secular side. He eventually maintained a mission in both worlds, handing out religious tracts at his rock concerts.
Born December 5, 1932, in Macon, Georgia, Richard Wayne Penniman stunned audiences even in his adolescent days performing with minstrel shows. As he described himself, "I was very effeminate. I was very frisky. I was loud." He honed his appearance and stage act under the influence of gay blues/R&B artists Billy Wright and S.Q. Reeder (Esquerita). He recorded blues for RCA Victor in 1951-52 and Peacock in 1953 but only with Specialty did he transfer his wild flamboyance to wax, beginning with the bombshell Tutti Frutti in 1955. His lives shows were still more frantic, to the point that even his films could inspire riots among teenaged fanatics. The list of performers he inspired is endless, from James Brown to the Beatles to Jimi Hendrix, who was once the guitarist in Richard's band. Even since his hitmaking days have been over, he has remained a charismatic celebrity. Once "The King of the Blues," he has since anointed himself "The Originator, the Emancipator and the Architect of Rock 'n' Roll."

and Fabulous Thunderbird frontman KIM WILSON came together for their 2014 release
"FOR POPS" which represents some of Mud's favorite songs from his father, and they were backed by the stellar Severn Records team of Billy Flynn and Rusty Zinn (guitars), Barrelhouse Chuck (Piano) Steve Gomes (bass) and Robb Stupka (drums).

Configurations for the album will also include CD, with a deluxe edition available featuring a "making of" documentary on DVD, expanded booklet that includes an in depth story and interview about the new album alongside exclusive pictures in ecol-book packaging. Additionally Toto XIV will be available as a 2LP vinyl set, and a Super Deluxe limited edition which includes the Deluxe CD/DVD edition, 2LP vinyl, an exclusive poster, t-shirt (large size only), and lithograph.
Toto XIV is a realized vision three plus decades in the making exhibiting world-class musicianship, masterful arrangements, topical lyrical commentary, and melodies that the collective genius of Lukather, Paich, Porcaro, Williams and their assembled band-mates bring to life. TOTO XIV is the band’s first album of new material since 2006’s Falling In Between. However, the band personally considers the new album to be the true follow-up to TOTO IV, which made the band global superstars.
Keyboardist Steve Porcaro reveals, "This is opposite of going through the motions. We are treating this like it is Toto V, our follow-up to TOTO IV. We just want to be the best version of ourselves that we can be. Be true to ourselves and make the best music we can. Entertain people which is what we were put on this Earth for." Keyboardist David Paich reflects, "I think of TOTO as a unit and a band that carries a responsibility when it goes out there in to the public consciousness. There is so much negativity and darkness that I think you have to be as Quincy Jones puts it, 'beams of light that blast through the darkness'."
As they began the process of a return the studio, all of the principle long-term members brought their A-game to the table. Guitarist Steve "Luke" Lukather offers, "When you put us in a room, and everybody brings in their pieces, the next thing you know it all fits together. Everybody's performances are top notch. We are really bringing our best out, forcing ourselves to make personal best choices, what's best for the music. I'm really excited to hear what people think." Singer Joseph Williams adds, "We are talking about a band where everybody is a writer, and everybody is a lead singer, and everybody is a player. All involved brought this trio to the table where it could just live on its own."
The band will hit the ground running with an extensive European headline arena tour with appearances at key festivals. The itinerary begins in Glasgow on May 21, and takes Toto through the UK, France, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Poland, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Italy, and Belgium. Ticket sales came out of the box with strength, with some appearances selling out within days of on-sale. A North American tour will follow in the summer of 2015. The band is also in the planning stages for their return to Asia later this year.
The last couple of years have been active, with a seven show sold-out tour of Asia that took them through Nagoya, Osaka, Tokyo, Sendai and Sapporo in April, 2014. Also that month, the 35th Anniversary Tour - Live In Polandtitle was released, debuting at #1 in territories across the globe. Last August and September, the band hit the road travelling across North America as co-headliners with Michael McDonald, which when it was all said and done was their most comprehensive tour on the continent in years.
Toto also continues to raise awareness for ALS, for their brother and friend, Mike Porcaro, who has been diagnosed with ALS, Lou Gehrig's Disease. The band commits energies towards fundraising for Police and Fire Departments of California and the Fallen Heroes initiative (http://www.fallenheroes.org/), and help the United Nations in their humanitarian endeavors through music.
