Hansen’s original centerpiece of the recently released Infinite Health album was an instrumental with a working title of “Infinite Health” that he had sent to Cautious Clay. The two songs are clearly connected, but Hansen felt that the vocal version needed to stand on its own with a separate release, and this became the foundation for the Where You Are EP. “To make the most positive impact on the people you love and the people that love you, you have to be the healthiest, strongest version of yourself and that includes both physical and emotional health,” says Tycho’s Scott Hansen. “Music has a unique ability to heal and help people with things they are going through. Tell me more: Electronic artist The Album Leaf is back with Future Falling, his first album since 2016's masterful Between Waves (not including a number of film scores and re-issues spearheaded by Jimmy LaValle during that period). The ambitious Future Falling features 10 immersive tracks that will appeal to fans of chillwave, ambient and downtempo electronica music. The feeling of listening to several tracks — notably the openers "Prologue" and "Dust Collects" and poignant closer "Epilogue" — is one of loss, grief and mortality. The aptly-titled "Stride" is a more uptempo track that expands the reach of the mostly-instrumental record. The luxurious and absolutely gorgeous track "Afterglow" features guest vocalist Kimbra; later Bat for Lashes makes an equally strong vocal contribution via the otherworldly "Near." Tell me more: The first American band to perform behind the Iron Curtain, Blood, Sweat & Tears performed a string of dates in Yugoslavia, Romania and Poland in June and July 1970. Many of the concerts were recorded using a portable 8-track machine; an American film crew filmed the shows for a planned documentary as well. However, the film company that financed the project closed its doors during post-production and members of BS&T didn't know how to to retrieve the materials. Fast forward 50 years and director John Scheinfeld and a tenacious team tracked down many of the recordings for the newly-released 2023 documentary "What the Hell Happened to Blood, Sweat & Tears?" and accompanying 10-track soundtrack. The depth and diversity of the troupe's material (encompassing rock, jazz, R&B, classical and more) shines across the soundtrack, with the fiery opener "Something's Coming On," soulful "God Bless The Child," dazzling "Spinning Wheel" and blues blaster "Something' Goin' On/Blues - Part II" among the early standouts; a bluesy "And When I Die," symphonic "Sometimes In Winter," the romantic "You've Made Me So Very Happy" (bolstered by David Clayton-Thomas' top-tier vocals) and powerful closer "I Can't Quit Her" entice on the second half of the collection. Tell me more: Following the release of his second solo album in June 1971, Stephen Stills embarked on his first solo tour. During that "The Memphis Horns Tour" Stills would open each night with a solo-acoustic set, and then close with an electric one. Now more than 50 years after completing that historic trek, a 14-track collection of previously unreleased performances captured over two nights at the Berkeley Community Theater on Aug. 20 and 21, 1971 has been released shining a well-deserved spotlight on the two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee. The marvelous title features inspired performances of a myriad of the singer-songwriter/guitar great's songs. The Dallas, Texas native kicks it off with a freewheeling take on "Love The One You're With." The acoustic-flavored "Do For The Others" and "Jesus Gave Love Away For Free," shimmering harmonies-rich "You Don't Have to Cry" and "The Lee Shore" (the latter two tracks feature David Crosby sharing vocals with Stills) are early standouts on the set. A medley of "49 Bye-Byes/For What It's Worth" (featuring Stills on piano), the blues-centered "Know You've Got To Run," horn section-anchored R&B gems "Lean On Me" and "Ecology Song" shine on the second half of the live album. Tell me more: Few rock artists are as prolific, gifted and eclectic as Neil Young. Listening to his recent release Noise & Flowers available on audio CD (the edition reviewed in this column) and via a deluxe edition that includes an LP, audio CD and Blu-ray featuring a concert film, it is amazing how the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer can sing the most intimate of quiet acoustic songs and then suddenly launch into thunderous rockers. The tracks on Noise & Flowers were captured on Neil Young + Promise Of The Real's 2019 European nine-date tour that began just two weeks after Young's lifetime friend and manager Elliot Roberts passed away. “Playing in his memory [made it] one of the most special tours ever,” Young says in the album’s liner notes. “We hit the road and took his great spirit with us into every song. This music belongs to no one. It’s in the air. Every note was played for music’s great friend, Elliot.” This collection offers raw and decidedly emotional takes on a far-flung range of Young gems. Tell me more: The best electronica artists stretch their work beyond robotic beats and paint-by-numbers synth sounds to infuse their original music with emotion and experimental-focused creativity. Such is the case with Denver-spawned Lotus' new full-length album Bloom and Recede (out on Aug. 26, 2022). The nine tracks — crafted by talented brothers Luke and Jesse Miller — are enticing while challenging and rewarding the listener. The hypnotic opener "Desert Blooms" Latin-tinged celebration "Pluck," lush "Pacific Glow" (watch the official video for "Pacific Glow" HERE), immersive "Time Dilates" and cinematic "Desert Recedes." The diverse field of instrumentals also benefit from some stellar guitar work that pumps up the electronic-anchored soundscape. Tell me more: Singer-songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Ken Sharp's marathon-length 7th album I'll Remember the Laughter features 50 songs; even better not a moment on the album is wasted. "Like most people, the pandemic turned my world upside down, but in that isolation, I was deeply inspired and found solace in creativity, writing/recording my music, and this robust productivity spurred the creation of some of my best music," Sharp noted of the new project. Indeed, the range of material extends from the tuneful opener "Maybe Next Summer" (Sharp is featured on lead and background vocals, piano, organ, Moog, tremelo guitar, mellotron vibes, sleigh bells, percussion on the track!) and Baroque pop swirl “Say Goodbye To One Of The Good Ones” to the driving indie rocker "There Goes My Sanity," the power pop sortie "Lady Godiva," tuneful garage rocker "It Pays To Be A Rock & Roll Star" and Philadelphia soul-steeped "Philly Get Back." Tell me more: The enduring legacy of the late French piano virtuoso Michel Petrucciani is celebrated across Colors, a new BMG-issued title available via 2-LP, 2-CD and digital. The range of delights across the jazz-mining collection is as vast as it is great. The lush "Colors" opens disc one, the inclusion of horns enhancing Petrucciani's inventive and flawless work on the piano. The adventuresome "Looking Up" finds the pianist performing solo, as does the touching "Love Letter." Disc two opens with a live performance of "Cantabile" captured at the Blue Note in Tokyo in November 1997; it's a stunning composition that begins gently and grows in power over the first five minutes before reemerging as a nuanced breeze to complete its near eight-minute run. The joyful "Little Peace in C For U" is bolstered by some terrific violin play from Stephane Grappelli , whose musical connection to Petrucciani astounds across the fast-moving three minutes. Even casual fans of jazz will be drawn into inviting tracks such as "Charlie Brown" and the romantic "Even Mice Dance." Released in connection with the 20th anniversary of Petrucciani's death, the magnificent collection is capped by "Montelimar," which appears on an album for the first-time ever. Tell me more: Infinitely dreamy, Tycho's new album Simulcast marks the sixth full-length effort from the Bay Area-based troupe. Group leader Scott Hansen has created a wonderful instrumental companion to last year's Grammy Award-nominated Weather. The new effort enthralls via eight inviting tracks as evidenced by the mid-tempo sheen of the aptly-named "Outer Sunset," the magnetic "Weather," emotive "Cypress" and edgier "PCH." The expansive "Stress" – which closes out the album – is another standout with a myriad of layers of sounds and moodscapes fitted against a laid-back beat that is both absorbing and entrancing. Tell me more: Fans of modern-day bluesman Tommy Castro & The Painkillers have finally been rewarded with a live album from the group courtesy of the winning Killin' It Live. Featuring selections recorded at venues in New York, Texas, Michigan and California during 2018, the set was produced by Castro and engineer Ron Alan Cohen. Singer-songwriter-guitar hero Castro revisits many of his most beloved cuts, ranging from the Southern blues-rock stomp "Make It Back To Memphis" and Chicago blues-flavored version of Sleepy John Estes' "Leaving Trunk" to the soulful R&B ballad "Anytime Soon." Castro dips back to his second full-length album to deliver a rocking take on the lead guitar-draped originals "Can't Keep a Good Man Down," and "Calling San Francisco." As showcased across "Killin' It Live," San Jose native Tommy Castro and his top-tier band the Painkillers (bassist Randy McDonald, drummer Bowen Brown and keyboardist Mike Emerson) are definitely worth catching live. They recently received two Blues Music Award nominations for Blues Rock Album Of The Year and Blues Rock Artist Of The Year (the 41st Annual Blues Music Awards will be presented by the Blues Foundation in Temphis on May 7, 2020). All Blues, the forthcoming covers album from the Peter Frampton Band, is set for release on June 7 via UMe. The album is a collection of Frampton’s favorite blues classics and was recorded with his longtime touring band, made up of Adam Lester (guitar/vocals), Rob Arthur(keyboards/guitar/vocals) and Dan Wojciechowski (drums).

“I Just Want To Make Love To You” (featuring Kim Wilson) is the first song to be released from the new album, and is available now with digital album pre-order. Listen/share the track HERE.

All Blues was recorded at Frampton’s studio in Nashville, Studio Phenix, and was co-produced by Frampton and Chuck Ainlay. The album features additional collaborations with Larry Carlton, Sonny Landreth and Steve Morse.

The vinyl will be available as a double LP and also as a limited edition translucent blue color pressing exclusively at PeterFrampton.com. The double LP will include the bonus track “I Feel So Good,” which was written by Big Bill Broonzy and popularized by Muddy Waters.

Of the album, Frampton explains, “I have always loved to play the blues. When we formed Humble Pie, the first material we played together was just that. For the last two summers I had been playing a handful of blues numbers every night on stage with Steve Miller Band. I enjoyed this immensely and it gave me the idea of doing an ‘All Blues’ album live in the studio with my band. We started the resulting sessions 9 days after coming off the road last year. Over a two-week period, we recorded 23 tracks, all live in the studio. The energy of these tracks is completely different from building a track one instrument at a time. With this recording, we pay tribute to all the original artists who invented this incredible music. I hope you can hear and feel our enjoyment. I’m not sure if you can say we had fun playing the blues. But we definitely did.”

To support All Blues, Frampton will be hosting a new six-week series on SiriusXM’s Deep Tracks channel. “The Peter Frampton Show” will premiere on Friday, May 10 at 10 a.m. ET on SiriusXM radios (channel 27) and on the SiriusXM app. Additionally, Frampton will walk SiriusXM listeners through each song from the new album in an exclusive track-by-track on SiriusXM’s BB King’s Bluesville channel. “Peter Frampton’s All Blues Show” will air on Monday, June 3 at 3:00pm ET on SiriusXM radios (channel 74) and on the SiriusXM app.

In conjunction with the album’s release, Frampton will kick off Peter Frampton Finale—The Farewell Tour presented by SiriusXM—an approximately 50-date run this summer and fallproduced by Live Nation. Frampton will retire from regular vigorous touring at the end of this year due to his diagnosis of the autoimmune disease Inclusion Body Myositis (IBM). IBM is a progressive muscle disorder characterized by muscle inflammation, weakness and atrophy. Frampton recently discussed his diagnosis with CBS “This Morning: Saturday,” watch the segment HERE.

COLLECTIVE SOUL’s silver anniversary year will be a celebration of their ongoing legacy in all-out style with a little bit of the classic and a lot of the new.

Not only have they already announced their Summer “Now’s The Time Tour” with Gin Blossoms, but in keeping with the Atlanta band’s theme of 2019, “now’s the time” to also let fans know that their tenth highly anticipated studio album, Blood, will be released June 21 on Fuzze-Flex Records/ADA. Pre-orders of the album as a download, CD, and vinyl are available today on any of these digital retailers. Digital pre-orders include a download of the first single, "Right As Rain," while downloads of "Good Place To Start" and "Them Blues," will be available May 17 and June 7, respectively.

“’Right As Rain’ is a phrase I had for a while,” says singer/guitarist/keyboardist E Roland. “It was one my grandmother used to tell me about--one of those old Southern things, you know? ‘C’mon, I’m gonna spank you right as rain!’ I never really knew what it meant (laughs). While I was writing it, Peter Stroud (Sheryl Crow’s lead guitarist and musical director) was home one day in Atlanta, and we invited him over to play the slide-guitar solo on the song for us. We all just sat around together and jammed it out.”

From stem to stern, Blood delivers in full. Witness the hard-charging skitter of “Over Me,” the optimistic declaration of “Right as Rain,” the hopeful uplift of a man “Changed,” and the tender promise of “Big Sky.” The album’s final track — the reflective, poignant acoustified coda “Porch Swing” — features background vocals and tasteful dobro licks from none other than Styx guitarist/vocalist Tommy Shaw, who was beyond thrilled to contribute to the cause. “I’ve always been a fan of E Roland and Collective Soul’s recordings,” Shaw says. “I thought about adding more parts than what Ed asked me to do, but as someone wiser than me once said, ‘Don’t paint over the masterpiece!’”

Blood is the culmination of a quarter-century of COLLECTIVE SOUL--E Roland (vocals/guitar), Dean Roland (rhythm guitar), Will Turpin (bass/background vocals), Jesse Triplett (lead guitar/background vocals), Johnny Rabb (drums/background vocals)-- assessing not only where they’ve come from, but also where they’re going. “I think Blood expresses where we’ve been on this life journey,” observes E Roland. “And we’ve done so with songs featuring piano and strings to those with a lot of guitar riffs. Blood is an accumulation of all the different styles we’ve used over the years, but it’s still COLLECTIVE SOUL. I think it’s the best we’ve ever done. I know you should think that, but I really do think it’s the best. It’s a good, consistent record. We’re just so proud of it.”

While the album title, Blood, maybe evoke many different thoughts and ideas, for the band, it all comes down to one word: family.

“So much of it is based on the camaraderie-ship of the band,” Roland explains. “All of us basically have children, and my brother Dean just had a baby girl. Jesse’s the only one who doesn’t have kids, but he’s basically a baby, in age anyway. My brother’s in the band so there’s blood there, but the five us — it’s a family.”

Indelibly memorable tracks like “December,” “The World I Know,” “Gel,” “Heavy,” and “Precious Declaration” (to name but a few) all evoke a collective sense of heartfelt observational universality and earnest positivity — in short, they’re the jukebox heroes of a new generation. Indeed, the secret sauce to COLLECTIVE SOUL’s continued success story is a simple one: a palpable mixture of insightful songwriting and impeccable band chemistry.

From the very beginning of the band’s career, Roland always had his eye on the prize. “When ‘Shine’ came out, we got asked, ‘What’s your goal with this band?’ I said, ‘I want to have a whole row of Collective Soul recordings on the shelf.’ That was my goal,” he recounts. “Me, I always wanted to see the full body of work. That’s all I ever wanted. I knew I could write, and as the band progressed and got better, that’s why we wanted to keep going. I don’t think we ever doubted it. We, as the artists — we had no fear. The guys in the band have enough faith in my songwriting, and I have faith in them.”

In touring news, COLLECTIVE SOUL will continue their celebration throughout the year with headlining U.S. shows which should last through the end of the year. Later this summer, they’ll embark on their “Now’s The Time Tour” with Gin Blossoms starting May 25 in Atlantic City, NJ at the Hard Rock Café – Sound Waves. COLLECTIVE SOUL and Gin Blossoms are offering their own VIP packages available now, which include band meet and greets, exclusive merchandise, and much more. “For us, we want to play the hits as we always do, but I think we also want to share the new record with our fans,” E Roland explains. “At 25 years later, we want to say, ‘Hey, we’re still making the best that we can do.’ Right now, I’ve got seven of the new songs in the setlist, and hopefully, on some nights, we can play the whole thing from start to finish. I mean, it’s our 25th anniversary. We’re going at it hard, everyone! We’re going hard.”

Heaven has clearly shined its light down on COLLECTIVE SOUL for 25 years running with no end in sight, so here’s to the next quarter-century and beyond!

GRAMMY® Award-nominated recording group Tycho has announced the release of their eagerly awaited new single. "Easy" is available now via Mom + Pop Music/Ninja Tune at all DSPs and streaming services. "Music can transport us to other realities but can also ground us firmly within ourselves," says Scott Hansen, Tycho's primary composer, songwriter, and producer. "After a trilogy of records spent exploring the outer reaches of experience I am focusing inward to reveal a human side to the music."
