Duran Duran have announced their 16th studio album: Danse Macabre, in time for this year’s Halloween.  The record is due for release on October 27 on Tape Modern via BMG and available to pre-order HERE.

Catalyzed by one special live performance that Duran Duran filmed in Las Vegas on October 31st of last year, Danse Macabre is the soundtrack to their ultimate Halloween party. Across 13 tracks the band unearth bright melodies from the darkness, threading together new songs, themed covers, and newly reimagined versions of their own ‘spooky’ classics.

Title track ‘Danse Macabre’ is released today as the first of three brand new songs. Anxious percussion sets the tempo against a distorted, growling synthesizer as Simon Le Bon’s swaggering verses give way to a handclap-laden and hypnotic hook. Teaming with producer Mr Hudson, channeling the chemistry they unlocked together on the Paper Gods album, the song also features former band-mate Warren Cuccurullo on guitar in his first collaboration with the band since 2001.

Listen to ‘Danse Macabre’ HERE

Speaking about Danse Macabre, keyboardist Nick Rhodes said: The song ‘Danse Macabre’ celebrates the joy and madness of Halloween. It is the title track of our forthcoming album, which gathers together an unusual mix of cover versions, reworked Duran Duran songs and several new compositions. The idea was born out of a show we played in Las Vegas on October 31st, 2022. We had decided to seize the moment to create a unique, special event…the temptation of using glorious gothic visuals set to a dark soundtrack of horror and humor was simply irresistible.

That evening inspired us to explore further and to make an album, using Halloween as the key theme. The record metamorphosed through a pure, organic process, and not only was it made faster than anything since our debut album, it has also resulted in something none of us could have ever predicted. Emotion, mood, style and attitude have always been at the heart of Duran Duran’s DNA, we search for light in the darkness and darkness in the light, and I feel we have somehow managed to capture the essence of all of that in this project.

Simon Le Bon elaborates: “It’s about a crazy Halloween party. It’s supposed to be fun!”

John Taylor said: “After all these years, Danse Macabre offers an interesting insight into the personality of the band. The music packs a real punch.”

Roger Taylor adds: “I hope you take a journey with us through the darker side of our inspirations into where we’re at in 2023. Maybe, you’ll leave with a deeper understanding of how Duran Duran got to this moment in time.”

Fans can also look forward to Duran Duran’s Halloween covers of Billie Eilish’s ‘Bury A Friend’Talking Heads’ ‘Psycho Killer’ (feat. Victoria De Angelis of Måneskin)The Rolling Stones’ ‘Paint It Black’, the Rick James-inspired ‘Super Lonely Freak’Siouxsie and the Banshees’ ‘Spellbound’Cerrone’s ‘Supernature’ and The Specials’ ‘Ghost Town’.

As well as Warren Cuccurullo, the album includes more special collaborations with former Duran Duran band member Andy Taylor, producer, guitarist and composer Nile RodgersVictoria De Angelis of Måneskin, and producers Josh Blair and Mr Hudson.

Andy Taylor originally joined Duran Duran in 1980, co-writing and playing guitar on their first three studio albums: Duran Duran (1981), Rio (1982), and Seven and the Ragged Tiger (1983), before leaving the group to pursue a solo career.  16 years later he returned for 2004’s Astronaut (2004), before parting company once again with the other four original members in 2006.

With Andy’s departure, Warren Cuccurullo joined the band full time in 1989, contributing both song writing and guitars to the albums Big Thing (1988), Liberty (1990), The Wedding Album (1993), Thank You (1995), Medazzaland (1997) and Pop Trash (2000).

Fast forward to 2023 and Andy Taylor and Warren Cuccurullo’s presence on Danse Macabre captures the true spirit of the album - a celebration of the raw energy and sense of fun that comes when friends make music together in a room.

Danse Macabre is not just an album for Halloween. Elsewhere, ‘Black Moonlight’ sees the band’s timeless song writing break into dance-rock glamor with the addition of Nile Rodgers and Andy Taylor on guitar, where epic coda ‘Confession In The Afterlife’ finds Duran Duran reunited with producer Mr Hudson anew.

As well as a second collaboration with Warren Cuccurullo on ‘Love Voudou’, Danse Macabre will feature newly recorded versions of ‘Nightboat’ and fan favorite ‘Secret Oktober 31st’ (both featuring Andy Taylor on guitar). The song made its first appearance as b-side to the 7” single ‘Union of The Snake’ and is now, 40 years later, seeing its first ever physical release on a Duran Duran studio album.

The origin of Danse Macabre begins in Las Vegas, October 31st, 2022. Simon Le Bon, John Taylor, Nick Rhodes and Roger Taylor donned full fancy dress, cast a horde of ghouls on a stage complete with 20 foot high skeletons, tombstones, cobwebs and coffins. The set included a parade of rarities and special covers - Duran Duran’s first live performance of ‘Secret Oktober’ since 2011, their first of ‘Love Voodoo’ since 2017, and first of ‘Nightboat’ since 2005. Covers of Siouxsie and the Banshees’ ‘Spellbound’, Cerrone’s ‘Supernature’ and The Specials’ ‘Ghost Town’ were also debuted in what has gone down in Duran Duran history as a Halloween show for the ages. The band and their audience had so much fun that they decided to put the set to tape, creating a worldwide Halloween event for all Duran Duran fans to enjoy.

Danse Macabre arrives amidst a busy year of live activity that has already seen Duran Duran perform sold out arena shows across the UK and Ireland. The performances were rapturously received, described as “royalty status” by The Times, “decadent and bombastic” by The Telegraph, “a first class and commanding performance” by CLASH, “joyous” by The Sun, "national treasures" by The Spectatorwhilst the Mail On Sunday confirmed, “their charms haven’t changed”. The band continue the FUTURE PAST sold-out headline arena tour across North America through August and September, where the rave reviews continue to pour in with Dallas Voice praising the band for sounding “just as fresh as they were decades ago," observing the band having “the audience in their grip." Mercury Newsnoted by the end of their set they “left the thousands of passionate fans clamoring for more." Boca Raton Tribune noted “Duran Duran delivered, sounding better than ever,” While Tampa Bay Times exclaimed "Their live performance still feels like a music video you want to watch over and over again!"

Danse Macabre follows a wave of landmark achievements for Duran Duran. Their 2022 induction into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Famemarked yet another career peak with the year already having seen the band headline London’s Hyde Park, perform at the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Concert at Buckingham Palace, close the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games in their home town of Birmingham, and a headline tour across North America which included sold out shows at New York’s Madison Square Garden and three nights at the Hollywood Bowl.

Danse Macabre will be released on October 27 via Tape Modern for BMG with artwork featuring images adapted from a collection of authentic vintage séance photos sourced by Nick Rhodes at auction.  It will be available on Black 2LP and CD, with a limited-edition Translucent Galaxy 2LP. The album will also be available on high res blu-ray audio. Pre-order HERE

Coachella-bound artists shine on latest album releases

Adam Granduciel of The War on Drugs performing at Coachella
in Indio, CA on Friday, April 13, 2018. Photo courtesy of Coachella.

Whether you want to get familiar with top-tier rock artists before you head out to Weekend 2 of Coachella or are simply interested in adding some great titles to your own music library, here are some recent album releases worth exploring.

Artist: The War On Drugs
Title: A Deeper Understanding (Atlantic)
You might like if you enjoy: Ryan Adams, Neil Young, Band of Horses
Tell me more: The War on Drugs' hour-long set at Coachella on April 13 proved to be one of the highlights of weekend 1. No wonder; a good deal of singer-songwriter/lead guitarist Adam Granduciel and company's set came from the band's latest album A Deeper Understanding (which won Best Rock Album at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards held in January 2018). The songs here are bewitching, with Granduciel's Tom Petty-meets-Ryan Adams lead vocals drenched in layers of his dazzling guitar work and the band's hypnotic rhythms. Every song is outstanding with the potent "Pain," entrancing "Holding On" and psychedelic-tinged heartland rocker "Nothing To Find" among the masterful songs on the 10-track A Deeper Understanding. Information: TheWarOnDrugs.net.

Artist: David Byrne
Title: American Utopia (Nonesuch)
You might like if you enjoy: Talking Heads, Peter Gabriel, David Byrne
Tell me more: One of the thrilling developments surrounding this year's Coachellafest lineup was the inclusion of genre-defying singer-songwriter/multi-instrumentalist David Byrne in a high-profile Saturday night spot. Byrne's performance on April 14 proved to be the best set this writer caught that day. Byrne's latest album American Utopia (released on March 9, 2018) continues to push and expand the diverse sonic universe explored by the 65-year-old artist since his groundbreaking approach with Talking Heads in the 1970s and '80s. The new album is filled with thought-provoking tracks including the ballad-meets-industrial rocker "I Dance Like This," the faith-minded "Every Day is a Miracle" offered up via a Caribbean soundscape and the sweeping feel-good standout "Everybody's Coming To My House." Other terrific songs featured on American Utopia include "Gasoline and Dirty Sheets" and "It's Not Dark Up Here." Information: DavidByrne.com.

Artist: Fleet Foxes
Title: Crack-Up (Nonsuch)
You might like if you enjoy: Fleet Foxes, the Moody Blues, Darlingside
Tell me more: Fleet Foxes' latest album Crack-Up is one of the more ambitious albums in memory, and the disc's track listing really finds the Seattle-spawned folk rock group pulling a myriad of progressive musical elements into their sound. From the sparse baroque-tinged acoustic stylings of "I Am All That I Need / Arroyo Seco / Thumbprint Scar" and subtle otherworldly vocals-enriched path painted during "Cassius" to the piano-anchored surge "On Another Ocean" and gorgeous immersive vocals-rich title track,  Fleet Foxes' third full-length album is an effort of artistic design and lush beauty. The ensemble's performance at Coachella on April 14 was spellbinding to be sure. Information: fleetfoxes.co.

Artist: Alvvays
Title: Antisocialites (Polyvinyl Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Japanese Breakfast's "Soft Sounds From Another Planet," Nushu, Waxahatchee
Tell me more: An album that blends dream pop, indie rock and shoegaze styles with perfection, Antisocialites is the must-hear sophomore effort from Toronto, Canada-based Alvvays. With singer Molly Rankin's lovely vocals and clever lyrics leading the way, Alvvays' material is always  (no pun intended) inviting and infectious. "Antisocialites" is bolstered by a mix of neo-New Wave driving indie rockers ("Plimsoll Punks" is sheer joy), wistful indie pop ("In Undertow," "Dreams Tonite"), power pop ("Your Type"), evocative ballads ("Already Gone") and art damage rock ("Hey," "Saved By A Waif"). Information: Alvvays.com.

Artist: Pvris
Title: All We Know Of Heaven, All We Need Of Hell (Rise Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Florence + the Machine
Tell me more: Pvris' latest album All We Know Of Heaven, All We Need Of Hell is filled with emotionally-charged and powerfully-delivered songs. With singer Lynn Gunn's emotive soprano helping spearhead the fervent material, the songs on Pvris' second album are anthemic in scope even while mining the deepest of emotions. "Heaven," "Visualette" and "No Mercy" are among the selections that drive hard without sacrificing nuances that give them more depth. Other material is more quiet, including the expansive "Anyone Else," faraway "Separate" and yearning "Walk Alone." To be sure, get to Coachella early on Friday and catch the Lowell, Massachusetts-spawned band's early-afternoon appearance. Information: pvris.com.

David Byrne Releases "This Is That" off "American Utopia"

Here is an update on David Byrne's upcoming 'American Utopia' album and news about his 2018 tour, including the sold-out dates at Coachella in April...

DAVID BYRNE RELEASES NEW TRACK “THIS IS THAT

AMERICAN UTOPIA OUT MARCH 9
ON TODOMUNDO/NONESUCH RECORDS

WORLD TOUR ANNOUNCED

Today, Friday, February 16, 2018, David Byrne has released “This Is That,” the latest track from his forthcoming album American Utopia, out March 9 on Todomundo / Nonesuch Records. Of the track, David noted. “This Is That” was co-written and produced by Daniel Lopatin and is available to download instantly with pre-orders of American Utopia on iTunes and nonesuch.com. Additionally, the track can be purchased/streamed as a standalone here.

Uncut named “This Is That” The Month’s Best New Music saying, “‘This highlight from American Utopiafinds Byrne teaming up with Daniel Lopatin aka Oneohtrix Point Never; over resonant, distant electronic drums and samples of Chinese folk instruments, Byrne channels the imagery of gospel music, but with a modern twist[…]  One of the best songs of Byrne’s storied career”.

This past month, Byrne has been in Europe presenting “Reasons To Be Cheerful,” an ongoing series he curates of hopeful writings, photos, music, and lectures. Watch a stream of the presentation given at New York’s New School last month via David’s Facebook page.

More about American Utopia
While David Byrne has collaborated on joint releases with Eno, Norman Cook (aka Fatboy Slim), and most recently St. Vincent over the past decade, American Utopia is Byrne’s first solo album since, 2004’s Grown Backwards, also on Nonesuch. American Utopia morphed during the writing and recording process, beginning with longtime collaborator Eno, and eventually growing to include collaboration with producer Rodaidh McDonald (The xx, King Krule, Sampha, Savages) alongside a diverse cast of creative contributors including Daniel Lopatin (aka Oneohtrix Point Never), Jam City, Thomas Bartlett (St. Vincent producer, aka Doveman), Jack Peñate, and others. The album was recorded in New York City at David’s home studio, Reservoir Studios, Oscilloscope, XL Studios, and Crowdspacer Studio and in London at Livingston Studio 1.
The album packaging features the work of “outsider artist” Purvis Young, whose work was often a blend of painting/drawing and collaged elements comprised of everyday found objects. A painting depicting a head with a face of indeterminate race or possibly gender—dreaming, meditating, contemplating—is on the album’s cover.

David Byrne’s recent works include Joan of Arc: Into the Fire, a theatrical exploration of the historical heroine which premiered at The Public Theater in New York (2017); The Institute Presents: NEUROSOCIETY, a series of interactive environments created in conjunction with PACE Arts + Technology that question human perception and bias (2016); Contemporary Color, an event inspired by the American folk tradition of color guard and performed at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center and Toronto’s Air Canada Centre (2015); Here Lies Love, a twenty-two-song theatrical production about the life of Imelda Marcos, authored in collaboration with Fatboy Slim that premiered at The Public Theater in New York (2013), traveled to London’s National Theater for a sold-out run (201415), and was remounted at the Seattle Repertory Theater (2017); Love This Giant, a studio album and worldwide tour created with St. Vincent (2012); and How Music Works, a book about the history, experience, and social aspects of music (2012). In 2015 Byrne curated Southbank Centre’s annual Meltdown festival in London. Aco-founder of the group Talking Heads (1976–88), he has released nine studio albums and worked on multiple other projects, including collaborations with Brian Eno, Twyla Tharp, Robert Wilson, and Jonathan Demme, among others. He also founded the highly respected record label Luaka Bop. Recognition of Byrne’s various works include Obies, Drama Desk, Lortel, and Evening Standard awards for Here Lies Love, an Oscar, Grammy, and Golden Globe for the soundtrack to Bernardo Bertolucci’s The Last Emperor, and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with Talking Heads. Byrne has published and exhibited visual art since his college days, including photography, filmmaking and writing. He lives in New York City.
