Todd Rundgren to tour with Utopia; headline Cleopatra Records' first-ever SXSW Showcase

This is shaping up to be another busy year for legendary singer-songwriter-guitarist Todd Rundgren. There are several choice news items I have gathered here...Robert Kinsler 


Todd Rundgren's Utopia to Return this Spring via a Highly-anticipated U.S. Tour

How sweet is this announcement? Groundbreaking artist Todd Rundgren is set to return with his mid-1970s troupe Utopia and tour the U.S. beginning April 18, 2018. 

On the tour, Rundgren will be joined by bassist Kasim Sulton, drummer Willie Wilcox and keyboardist Ralph Shuckett. A complete list of the newly announced concert dates, cities and venues is posted below. Various VIP packages are available at the official Utopia site.


Although Rundgren has performed a few reunions with various members of Utopia dating back to 2011, this more high-profile affair is sure to please fans of Utopia. The band had an enduring top 40 hit titled "Set Me Free" in 1980 but broke up in 1986.

Rock Legend Todd Rundgren Headlines Cleopatra Records First Ever SXSW Showcase!

Los Angeles, CA - One of the few remaining truly independent, privately owned record labels in existence today, L.A.-based Cleopatra Records has been championing underground music and outsider artists since its inception in 1992. Now, the label has teamed up with the biggest music festival dedicated to discovering and promoting new talent, SXSW, to announce the first ever official Cleopatra Records showcase. 

Headlining this special event is legendary songwriter/producer/guitarist, Todd Rundgren, an artist well known for pushing the boundaries of rock and pop with his distinctive flair for the eccentric and unusual. Todd’s newest album, White Knight, was released by Cleopatra Records in May of last year and features guest performances by Trent Reznor, Robyn, Joe Satriani & Daryl Hall.

In addition to Rundgren, the showcase will also bring together some of the label’s newest acts including dreamwave artist Pastel Ghost, whose first album Abyss has been reissued by Cleopatra and will also see their forthcoming album released later this year on the label. Alternative metal cabaret act from Mexico, Descartes A Kant, partnered with Cleopatra for their newest album Victims Of Love Propaganda in May of last year while L.A.’s own death rock architects, Egrets On Ergot, released Surfeit Of Germütlich last October. Electronic duo United Ghosts will issue their Cleopatra debut later this year while local Texas band Nite, consisting of twin brothers Kyle and Myles Mendez, saw their newest release Rebornlaunched in July of 2016. Each of these bands demonstrates the label’s fondness for uniquely creative acts and a commitment to supporting truly artist-driven music.

The official SXSW showcase for Cleopatra Records will be held at Elysium in downtown Austin, TX on March 15th. The first band will start at 8pm.

The Rolling Stones have today announced that they will headline the Pinkpop Festival in Holland on Saturday 7 June and the TW Classic Festival in Belgium on Saturday 28 June as part of their 14 ON FIRE tour.

Mick Jagger commented: "I love festivals in the summertime and can't wait for the tour to get to Europe."

Keith Richards added: “Let’s keep this show on the road …the band are in top form so I’m really looking forward to getting back to Europe.”

The Rolling Stones - 14 ON FIRE tour sees Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts and Ronnie Wood back out on the road again after a mammoth run of concerts in the UK and US last year, bringing their iconic music and groundbreaking stage shows to audiences around the globe. The Stones launched the 14 ON FIRE tour with their first ever gig in the Middle East in February, and are currently making their way through Asia, Australia and New Zealand, before returning to play Europe for the first time in seven years.

The band will treat their generations of fans to a set packed full of classic Stones hits such as ‘Gimme Shelter’, ‘Paint It Black’, ‘Jumping Jack Flash’, ‘Tumbling Dice’, ‘It’s Only Rock ‘N’ Roll’, plus a couple of unexpected gems.

The Rolling Stones will be playing more major shows in Europe in May and June, and these will be announced over the next two weeks.

Orange Gives Campaign Benefiting Little Kids Rock Kicks off Today at SXSW 

Orange Amps Will Donate to the Music Education Charity for Each #OrangeGives Hashtag on Twitter or Instagram March 12-16

(Austin – March 12, 2014) Orange Amplification is getting loud at SXSW 2014 to support music education in schools amidst budget cuts nationwide that are eliminating programs in low-income communities. The renowned amplifier manufacturer – known for its unique tones and distinctive design – is encouraging music fans at SXSW and around the world to join them in bringing free music education and instruments to children in under-served public schools across the U.S.

Orange will donate $1 to Little Kids Rock every time someone posts to Twitter or Instagram using the hashtag #OrangeGives (limited to one entry per person/social media identity). You don't need to be at SXSW to participate, but bonus points if you post a photo or video of a band getting loud with Orange gear along with the hashtag #OrangeGives. The Jerry Garcia Symphonic Celebration Featuring Warren Haynes will visit four additional cities this spring: Wallingford, CT, Chicago, IL, Milwaukee, WI and St. Louis, MO. 

This groundbreaking orchestral adventure - curated by the Garcia family - will feature his storied original compositions as well as classic interpretations of timeless standards that were hallmarks of Garcia and the Grateful Dead's shows. GRAMMY®-winning vocalist/guitarist Warren Haynes (Allman Brothers Band, Gov't Mule) will lend his soul-soaked, introspective blend of rock, blues, R&B and jazz to Garcia'smasterworks. Haynes brings an intimate knowledge of the material, having performed extensively with The Dead and Phil Lesh & Friends. In celebration of Record Store Day, Round Records will re-issue Garcia, Jerry Garcia's solo debut, on Saturday, April 19. The white 180-gram vinyl will come inindividually numbered foil-stamped packaging (edition of 1,500) and include a free MP3 download card. The limited edition re-issue features newly re-mastered audio from the original 30ips 1/4" mix master reels.

Garcia was originally released in January 1972 and peaked at No. 35 on theBillboard 200 - the highest charting solo release of Garcia's career.  Garcia provides most of the album's instrumentation himself, performing on acoustic guitar, electric guitar, pedal steel, bass, piano, organ, samples and vocals.  Grateful Dead drummerBill Kreutzmann appears on drums.  The album's songs - six of which became staples in the Grateful Dead repertoire - are credited to Garcia, Kreutzmann and lyricist Robert Hunter.  

Garcia spoke lightly of the album at the time, telling Rolling Stone, "I'm just going on a trip. I have curiosity to see what I can do, and I've a desire to get into sixteen track and go on trips that are too weird for me to want to put anybody else I know through. And also I want to pay for this house."

While Garcia characterized the album as "self-indulgent," AllMusic.com notes, "Time has rendered that assessment utterly false, as Garcia is nothing short of a full-bodied artistic expression from one of rock & roll's most multi-faceted musicians."

'Austin City Limits' Announces New Tapings for 40th Anniversary Season

Austin, TX—March 3, 2014—The groundbreaking television music series Austin City Limits (ACL) unveils the first tapings of its upcoming 40th Season, revealing an eclectic line-up of music icons and innovators: Los Lobos, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Valerie June, Eric Church and Thao & The Get Down Stay Down. ACL celebrates its outstanding legacy this year with the return of beloved ACL artists and some highly anticipated debuts.  Broadcast episodes begin airing this fall as part of ACL's Season 40. Danny Elfman is a self-taught composer born and raised in Los Angeles, California. His first orchestral composition, Serenada Schizophrana, was played at Carnegie Hall. The composition was featured in the sountrack to the IMAX film Deep Sea 3D, which was conducted by John Mauceri and narrated by Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet. In 2005, Elfman worked with Tim Burton on the film Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and the stop-motion animated musical Corpse Bride. He has received a Grammy and has been nominated for three Academy Awards.

With members hailing from America and Sweden, Grizfolk, has been garnering international attention for their undeniably catchy and unique blend of folk, rock and electro-pop. Relativity Music Group recently released soundtracks for DreamWorks Animation's The Croods, Safe Haven, Millennium Films' Olympus Has Fallen and The Iceman as well as Focus Features' Hyde Park on Hudson and Promised Land.
