Sights and Sounds: actor Alan Rickman, 'Three For All Tour' (Heart, Cheap Trick, Joan Jett), Hank Williams Jr., Little Scream,

Less than a week after legendary artist David Bowie died at age 69, another British legend has passed after losing his battle with cancer. Actor  Alan Rickman (Harry Potter, Die Hard, Robin Hood) died earlier today. A tough week to be sure. Here is a roundup of music news...

Not one, not two, but three Rock and Roll Hall of Fame artists are teaming up for an all-star summer tour. And all three artists are greats I've seen and reviewed multiple times.

Live Nation announced on Jan. 13, 2016, that Heart, Cheap Trick and Joan Jett & the Blackhearts are part of the "Three For All Tour." The tour begins in Clarkston, Michigan on July 14, 2016. Tickets go on sale on Friday, Jan. 22.

The tour is scheduled to include stops here in Southern California, as well as Chicago, San Francisco, Nashville and Dallas. The tour won't be done and dusted until Sept. 23 with a final date in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Country legend Hank Williams Jr.’s new album IT’S ABOUT TIME will be available Friday, January 15, 2016, in stores and across digital retailers. The Nash Icon Records’ project marks his 37th studio album and includes the current single “Are You Ready for the Country” featuring Eric Church.

“I couldn’t be more excited about this album,” exclaimed Hank Jr. “I have been doing this a long time but I promise this is the best album yet and fans will not be disappointed.”

The legendary entertainer will be making national television appearances the week of January 17 in support of the album.

Laurel Sprengelmeyer is Little Scream
Montreal based multi-instrumentalist, writer, and visual artist Laurel Sprengelmeyer aka Little Scream is more than pleased to announce her signing with Merge Records and Dine Alone Records (Canada-only) for a new LP to be released later this year. “Merge is a cultural monolith in my world, and I’m amped and honored to be working with them,” said Sprengelmeyer when asked about signing to Merge. “The record I just made is a crazy beast, and I can’t think of a better home for it.”

Little Scream's debut album, The Golden Record, received a glowing 8.1 on Pitchfork, which considered it "a stellar debut...[and] a perfectly mixed bag of graceful folk, coiled pop, and expansive art rock". NPR dubbed it "an absolutely captivating record", including it on their Best Albums of 2011 list, and the New York Times evoked its "hints of the divine", naming her one of the best new acts to follow at SXSW.

Little Scream toured extensively with The Golden Record, playing numerous opening and headlining performances in North America and Europe, including a tour with Sufjan Stevens as well as dates with Jose Gonzalez, Beirut, and Sharon Van Etten.

More details on Little Scream’s sophomore album will be announced shortly. Until then she’ll be on the road across North America on tours with Operators and Thao & The Get Down Stay Down beginning February 17. Full tour dates can be found below.
"[Sprengelmeyer] can be gentle and folky or muster mock-classical strings and flute; she overdubs herself into a hearty campfire choir or an ethereal descant. She can be stark and electric like P. J. Harvey or gather up a grand, handmade anthem like Arcade Fire...” – Jon Pareles, NEW YORK TIMES

Here is a roundup of today's music news...I'll continue to feature Record Store Day updates (a few included in this post) in the days and weeks ahead too!

Shania Twain to release 'Shania: Still The One Live From Vegas' on DVD and Blu-ray via Eagle Rock Entertainment

International superstar Shania Twain wrapped up her successful two-year residency in Las Vegas, NV as her SHANIA: Still the One stage show came to a close in December. The five-time GRAMMY winner entertained concert-goers from all over the world at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace during the course of her 105 performances and now, fans have an opportunity to bring the Vegas production home with the release of Twain’s live Blu-ray and DVD SHANIA: Still the One Live from Vegas via Eagle Rock Entertainment on April 7, 2015.

Produced by Twain and directed by Raj Kapoor, Live from Vegas captures the full SHANIA: Still the One stage performance, plus the bonus feature “Backstage Pass,” which boasts over an hour of never-before-seen behind-the-scenes footage tracking the conception, training, rehearsals, costumes and all decisions in-between that go into creating a one-of-a-kind experience for the audience. The show – a powerful journey through Shania’s biggest hits, country favorites, and beloved crossover songs – features a 13-piece live band, dancers, trained horses, a flying motorcycle and plenty of Vegas flash.

“This show has been my labor of love for over three years,” shares Twain. “It has meant so much to me and was such a privilege to live out my visions on that stage, and it is so exciting to now get to share the whole experience with the fans all over the world!”

With more than 75 million albums sold worldwide and U.S. sales topping 34.5 million, Twain remains the top-selling female country artist of all time. Her 1997 release Come On Over has sold in excess of 15.6 million making it the top-selling country album and places it in the Top 10 all-genre best sellers of all time.

Merge Records to re-issue Sugar catalog this summer

Fans of Hüsker Dü frontman Bob Mould can get amped due to exciting news about forthcoming Sugar releases set to land soon. Here is the latest news pulled from my inbox...

Merge Records to re-issue Sugar catalog on July 24, 2012

Through both his solo work and as a frontman for the legendary Hüsker Dü, Bob Mould pioneered a signature wall of guitar sound and unmistakable vocal style that has imprinted a defining influence on more than one generation—impacting artists including Dave Grohl, Ryan Adams and Britt Daniel of Spoon, all of whom paid homage to Mould by performing songs from all stages of his career at a tribute show last year at L.A.’s Disney Hall. In the three decades encompassing his career thus far, however, Bob Mould saw his greatest success during his stint as lead singer, guitarist and songwriter for iconic early ‘90s trio Sugar.

Mould broke onto the rock scene in the early 1980s as front man of the hardcore band Hüsker Dü. Hüsker Dü packed decades of creative evolution into the barely five years between the release of its first and final records, blowing eardrums and minds in equal measure while progressing from the primal breakneck caterwaul of Everything Falls Apart to the double-vinyl conceptual opus Zen Arcade to bona fide initial pop rock inroads with Candy Apple Grey before disintegrating in 1987. Mould re-emerged in 1989 as a sober and formidable singer/songwriter with his landmark solo debut Workbook, and continued working as a solo artist through the following year’s Black Sheets Of Rain.

Mould returned to a three-man band format with the 1992 debut of Sugar. With Mould on guitar and vocals, David Barbe on bass and vocals, and Malcolm Travis on drums, Sugar harnessed the sonic chaos of Hüsker Dü into a more focused pop/rock framework with increased emphasis the songs’ exciting melodies and irresistible hooks as well as the increasingly accomplished musicianship behind them. Critics and audiences alike warmed to Sugar’s fresh and innovative balance of punishing volume and pop sparkle, with many regarding this phase as their favorite of Mould’s entire career.

Sugar’s 1992 debut album Copper Blue sold over 250,000 units upon its original release and received overwhelming praise. Rolling Stone christened it “thunderous”; Vogue dubbed it “smashing”. NME would ultimately name it their 1992 Album of the Year. Currently, Mould has been commemorating Copper Blue’s 20th anniversary by playing the record in its entirety with his current band of Jason Narducy (bass) and Jon Wurster (drums).

Recorded and mixed during the same intense sessions that produced Copper Blue, the Beaster EP was originally released in April 1993. Notably darker in tone than the widescreen power-pop of Copper Blue, Beaster nevertheless boasts some of Mould’s most powerful songwriting.

File Under: Easy Listening -- the third and final album by this short-lived but brilliant trio -- was originally released in September 1994, featuring songs such as “Your Favorite Thing” that endure as mainstays of Mould’s solo performances to this day.

You can pre-order the releases via Merge Records' site here.
