On January 4, 1974, Marvin Gaye stepped on to the stage at the Oakland-Alameda Coliseum to deliver his first proper live show in years. With 14,000-plus fans in front of him, he performed a rapturous set. With the release to all streaming partners of Marvin Gaye Live!: Deluxe Edition on Motown/UMe, the full show will finally be available for the first time on March 28, 2025, just a few days ahead of what would have been Gaye’s 86th birthday (April 2).

Dropping today in anticipation of the Deluxe Edition release is “Come Get To This (Live In Oakland).” Listen HERE. A rare track that appeared briefly on compact disc and DSPs and then disappeared - and was never included in the original live album - it serves as the perfect prelude to this epic performance, highlighting his instantly recognizable vocals and iconic presence.

 

The original, 9-track Marvin Gaye Live! LP first arrived on June 19, 1974, following Marvin’s previous smash album, Let’s Get It On. Driven by the ecstatically received performance of “Distant Lover,” the elaborately packaged live album hit #1 on the Soul/R&B Album Chart for two weeks in addition to climbing to #8 on the Pop Album Chart. It also garnered a GRAMMY® Award nomination for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance. This new Deluxe Edition paints the full picture of the evening, boasting the addition of four rare cuts: “Flying High (In the Friendly Sky),” “Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology),” “Come Get To This,” and “Keep Gettin’ It On,” plus a spoken word interlude where Marvin sweetly acknowledges the band - consisting of stellar studio players including Motown legend James Jamerson on bass and a full 30+-piece orchestra - and his “Let’s Get It On” creative partner, Ed Townsend.

Also on March 28, the standard audio presentation of the original 9-track version will land on digital platforms for the first time. Both the original album and the new Deluxe Edition are newly remastered and available in Dolby® ATMOS for the full immersive concert appearance.

 

Last year, Motown/UMe debuted the first-ever official animated music video for Marvin Gaye’s classic signature staple, “Let’s Get It On.” Watch it HERE. The latter has amassed 2.6 million YouTube views and counting.

 

The video complemented Motown/UMe’s 2023 release of Let’s Get It On: Deluxe Edition on the fiftieth anniversary of the seminal record’s original release. Upon its arrival, Variety raved, “From the wah-wah guitar that opens the title track to the operatic closer “Just to Keep You Satisfied,” Marvin Gaye’s 1973 album “Let’s Get It On” expressed the joy — and complexity — of human sexuality like virtually none in popular music before it.” Consequence of Sound noted, “It was his first foray into funk, as he combined soul and doo-wop to establish himself as a sex icon and expand his mainstream appeal.” American Songwriter put it best, “The evergreen quality of the music hasn’t diminished in 50 years, still sounding as vibrant, sultry, and sexy as when it was recorded.” 

 

Inducted into the GRAMMY Hall of Fame in 2004, Let’s Get It On represents a pivotal moment not only in the career of Marvin Gaye but in the evolution of soul music. Gaye gave voice to intimate desire in a way that was lightning-charged. At the time, he claimed it was spiritually guided. THE MOTOWN SOUND COLLECTION: SEPTEMBER 13 OFFERS THE RELEASE OF MARVIN GAYE’S IN THE GROOVE, DIANA ROSS AND THE SUPREMES’ LOVE CHILD,  AND MEET THE TEMPTATIONS Elemental Music’s LP Reissue Series of Classic and Collectible Albums from the Legendary Detroit Soul Label Continues with Monthly Releases Through the End of 2024 MARVIN GAYE In The Groove DIANA ROSS AND THE SUPREMES Love Child THE TEMPTATIONS Meet The Temptations AUGUST 28, 2024 (New York, NY) — Elemental Music’s ongoing LP reissue series, the Motown Sound Collection, continues with the release on September 13, 2024 of three more classic titles from the Detroit record label’s archives: Marvin Gaye’s In The Groove, Diana Ross And The Supremes’ Love Child, and The Temptations’ debut album, Meet The Temptations (in its original mono).   MARVIN GAYE’S In The Groove In The Groove was initially released on August 26, 1968, on the Motown subsidiary Tamla Records; however, it was reissued the following year under the title I Heard It Through The Grapevine after that song became a smash success. In The Groove, his first solo studio outing in several years represents the singer reestablishing himself as a solo artist following recordings that paired him first with Kim Weston and later with Tammi Terrell. The album also found Gaye operating without his go-to songwriting team of Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier, and Eddie Holland, who split from Motown in early 1968. In The Groove, which reached #2 on Billboard’s Soul chart, is well stocked with tunes from other Motown hitmakers, such as Nickolas Ashford & Valerie Simpson, Barrett Strong & Norman Whitfield, and Ivory Jo Hunter (including the Stevie Wonder collaboration "Loving You Is Sweeter Than Ever"). There’s also a cover of Goffin & King’s “Some Kind of Wonderful” and two tracks Gaye co-wrote with his then-wife Anna Gordy Gaye, “Change What You Can” and “At Last (I Found a Love).” MARVIN GAYE "Loving You Is Sweeter Than Ever" Link: https://youtu.be/YDieeDqUEx8?si=a6OTYDucwLGMi-qR DIANA ROSS AND THE SUPREMES’ Love Child Released on November 13, 1968, Love Child was the group’s 15th studio album; it’s also one of the first studio releases after they became Diana Ross And The Supremes (the name change occurred the prior year when Cindy Birdsong replaced Florence Ballard). The title track, which soon became one of the Supremes’ iconic hits, “Love Child,” achieved a #1 triple crown - topping the Billboard Hot 100, Cashbox Top 100, and Record World’s Top 100 charts in the US, as well as reaching #1 in the UK, New Zealand, and Canada. The album also features the Smokey Robinson song “He’s My Sunny Boy,” a pair of Ashford & Simpson gems (“Some Things You Never Get Used To” and “You Ain’t Livin’ Till You’re Lovin’”), and “Can’t Shake It Loose,” which George Clinton co-wrote while working as a Motown staff writer. While more a collection of singles than a studio effort, Meet The Temptations provides a fascinating look at how the Temptations’ sound developed over their first recordings as the group worked with different producers, including Berry Gordy, Norman Whitfield, and Smokey Robinson. Among these early singles, only 1962 released “Dreams Come True” broke into the charts. However, the Temptations’ fortunes changed with their 1964 career-launching single, “The Way You Do The Things You Do,” which topped off at #11 on the Billboard Hot 100, hitting #1 on Cash Box’s R&B Single Chart. The song also marked the debut of the classic Temptations lineup, with new member David Ruffin joining Eddie Kendricks, Paul Williams, Melvin Franklin, and Otis Williams. The reissue will come out in mono, just as when Motown first released Meet The Temptations. Powerhouse vocalist Genya Ravan will have two of her self-produced solo albums—Urban Desire (1978) and its follow-up … And I Mean It (1979)—re-released on August 18 (Genya Ravan Productions, distributed by BFD/The Orchard). Both feature Ravan’s scorching vocals, her masterful production and her soulful blues-harp in a myriad of settings, most notably an energized hard-rocking ‘60s girl-group update accented by a Stones-like ferocity, a Jukes-like party atmosphere amid a Spector-ish wall of sound.

Urban Desire, on black vinyl, red vinyl and CD, plus …And I Mean It, on black vinyl, pink vinyl and CD, display a rare pedigree of rock’n’roll smarts from New Wave, Soul, and Blues to Pop and Classic Rock’n’Roll. No one ever covered The Supremes (“Back In My Arms Again”) or John Cale (“Darling I Need You”) like this! Genya’s duet with Lou Reed (“Aye Co’lorado”) contains everything from piano wildness to punk bravado. Her duet with Ian Hunter (“Junkman”) is a match made in honky-tonk heaven (complete with Mick Ronson on lead guitar). The version of Marvin Gaye’s 1962 “Stubborn Kinda Fellow”—renamed “Stubborn Kinda Girl”—has to be ranked up amongst the greatest Gaye covers ever.

Ravan—Genyusha Zelkowitz, born in 1940 Poland—survived the Holocaust to have a career like no other. Decades sober, she stands as a true pioneer for women who rock. Her 2004 tell-all, Lollipop Lounge: Memoirs of a Rock and Roll Refugee, tells the tale of an immigrant who fought and clawed her way through the boy’s club of the music industry. First came The Escorts with future producer Richard Perry (Nilsson, The Pointer Sisters, Ringo, Tiny Tim). Impressed with her vocals during an impromptu jam, he asked her to join the band as lead vocalist. They scored a #1 regional hit with “Somewhere” from West Side Story. Following that, in 1963, she formed the first all-woman rock band, Goldie & The Gingerbreads, before pioneering one of the first rock’n’roll horn bands—Ten Wheel Drive—in 1969. She has, over the course of five decades, carved her place in rock history. Currently hosting “Chicks and Broads” as well as “Goldie’s Garage” on Sirius/XM’s “Underground Garage “(started by one of her fans, Stevie Van Zandt). “Chicks and Broads” spotlights forgotten females of previous generations. “Goldie’s Garage” keys in on today’s up’n’comers.

This real-life New York Doll has also produced albums by 13 different artists including The Dead Boys (1977’s Young Loud And Snotty) and Ronnie Spector (1980’s Siren). After being a key figure in the ‘70s punk explosion, she was portrayed by actor Stana Katic in the 2013 CBGB movie. Additionally, Genya Ravan will be inducted into the New England Hall of Fame this fall.
