“This was the first song [producer] Mark Hudson and I recorded together, it came from an idea I had sent to [producer] Mark Hudson, He loved the idea and Melody but not the lyric so he wrote a new one. We both thought it turned out ok and confirmed to us that we could work together. This kind of song or lyric editing goes on a lot in recording projects, but in the nature of creating it can sometimes be difficult to allow each other the freedom to cut and dice the ideas without the fuss of discussing the whole idea too closely and losing the magic.” —Joey Molland

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — The story of Badfinger is one of rock’s saddest and most tragic tales. But one thing is for certain: the group that practically invented “power pop” was abundantly filled with talent. To have three great songwriters in one band was reminiscent of the group’s original label founders, the Beatles. Badfinger’s singles are still regarded as pop gems some 50 years later: “Come and Get It,” “No Matter What,” “Day After Day,” and “Baby Blue.” 

Perhaps the most unheralded of the three in Badfinger was Liverpudlian guitarist Joey Molland. His songwriting talent started to blossom with the group’s finest album, 1971’s Straight Up. Molland contributed five songs to the group’s fourth platter including “I’d Die Babe,” “Sweet Tuesday Morning” and “Suitcase.” Joey continued to play and write as Badfinger motored through the ’70s recording and touring. But great albums like 1974’s Wish You Were Here were met with record company and personal mismanagement. And in 1975, the group’s leader, Pete Ham, tragically passed away. 

Molland eventually left the group, returned, and left again to launch his own solo career. He’s played in various groups and under the name Joey Molland’s Badfinger since 1983. His several solo albums won critical acclaim but nothing could have prepared us for his latest album.

Omnivore Recordings is proud to announce the release of Be True to Yourself, a tour de force pop album by Molland co-written with producer Mark Hudson (producer of last year’s Losst And Founnd by Harry Nilsson, also on Omnivore). Street date is October 16, 2020.

The album is filled with delicious pop hooks and features musical contributions from Joey’s friends (Julian Lennon, Micky Dolenz, Jason Scheff and Steve Holley). With front and back cover photography by Julian Lennon, this album is a veritable feast for the eyes and ears! Tell me more: A year after Sarah Brightman's 12th studio album Hymn was released, the multi-format companion release HYMN: Sarah Brightman in Concert has been issued and provides a fully immersive experience for fans of the English soprano. Indeed, the visual/audio recording was captured at the Festspielhaus in the Bavarian Alps; the two-act performance features a musical film in the first act followed by a live concert. Brightman's three-octave voice remains a wonder and is used to perfection as she is accompanied by her band as well as the Bavarian Philharmonic Orchestra, a 50-voice choir and the Ludwig Ensemble of dancers. Guest performers on the title include Japanese keyboardist Yoshiki, and singers Vincent Niclo, Mario Frangoulis and Narcis. Brightman's signature vocals hit their mark on the rich mix of material, ranging from classical crossover selections ("Sogni," "Figlio Perduto") to Broadway hits (particularly "Phantom Of The Opera") and rock- and pop-mining selections (Brian May's "Who Wants To Live Forever" and La Bionda's "There For Me"). Beyond the stunning audio and visual featured on the title is the power of the choreography of dancers, use of state-of-the-art lighting and other theatrical effects that add power to the concept film and concert that follows. One of the early highlights of the film is where Brightman performs "Beautiful" near a reflecting pool, and the bending of her image in the creatively-lit water offers an artful look to the performance. Tell me more: This year has seen a slew of deluxe reissues, concert recordings and lost treasures, none greater than the final album from legendary singer-songwriter Harry Nilsson. Set for release on Nov. 22, 2019 – more than 25 years after he was struck down by a fatal heart attack at the age of 52 – Nilsson's aptly-titled Losst and Founnd finds the late American artist joined by a number of top-tier guests on nine original songs along with his versions of Yoko Ono's inviting "Listen, the Snow is Falling" and Jimmy Webb's beautiful "What Does a Woman See in a Man." The signature sound that had Nilsson scoring a number of radio hits in the late '60s and early '70s abounds across the new disc, from the New Orleans rhythm and blues romp of "Animal Farm" and infectious title track to the tender "Love is the Answer." Guests on the outstanding album include famed drummer Jim Keltner (Ringo Starr, John Lennnon, George Harrison), pianist Jimmy Webb, bassist Klaus Voormann, and Harry's son Kiefo Nilsson. Title: Thinkin' Problem (Omnivore Recordings)

Tell me more: The 25th Anniversary edition of singer-songwriter David Ball's 1994 hit album Thinkin' Problem includes all 10 songs from that LP as well as eight bonus tracks adding up to an essential collection celebrating traditional country music. Ball, who had previously been a member of the Austin-based trio Uncle Walt's Band, found much-deserved commercial success with Thinkin' Problem, which featured the title track (his first major hit) as well as subsequent hit singles "When The Thought of You Catches Up With Me," "Look What Followed Me Home," "What Do You Want With This Love" and "Honky Tonk Healin'." Listening to the album in 2019, it's easy to believe that all of the songs could have been radio staples, especially the lovely ballad "12-12-84." The bonus material shines as well, with the sparse 2019 acoustic take of "What Do You Want With This Love," spirited "Give Me Back My Heart" (a 1993 studio demo) and the breezy "Circle of Friends" and "I've Got My Baby On My Mind" among my favorites. Tell me more: Texas-based singer-songwriter Kinky Friedman has released a profound album of original songs that serve as a bona fide reminder of the power of music and song craft. Resurrection is an album that shines a welcome light on Friedman, 73, who is writing and crafting songs that draw on his life experiences along with his ever-keen observations at the world around him. The songs have an authentic and timeless feel to be sure, from the utterly beautiful moodscape he paints on "I Love You When It Rains" and acoustic tapestry of "The Bridge That Wouldn't Burn" to the Latin-flavored "Al! Harry Nilsson's final album, 'Losst and Founnd' finally to see the light of day, Nov. 22 via Omnivore Recordings.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — The music world was stunned on January 15, 1994, when superstar vocalist Harry Nilsson was struck down by a heart attack at the young age of 52. 

 

What the music world did not know at the time was that the multiple Grammy^®award-winning artist was at work on his first album of original material in nearly fifteen years — fans would have to wait another quarter of a century to hear it. 

 

Omnivore Recordings is proud to release Losst and Founnd, a brand new album by Harry Nilsson. Produced by Mark Hudson (Ringo Starr, Aerosmith, Ozzy Osbourne), the album features nine Nilsson originals as well as covers by Jimmy Webb and Yoko Ono. With musical contributions from an all-star cast of musicians, including Van Dyke Parks, Jim Keltner, Webb, and Harry’s son, Kiefo, the album features classic Nilsson melodies that have been his trademark for over 50 years. 

Nilsson’s estate is administered by Warner Chappell Music (WCM), who championed the album as part of the company’s effort to create new opportunities around catalog. WCM is working on a four-series podcast delving into the backstory behind Losst and Foundd, to be released leading up to the November album drop.

 

Losst and Founnd will be available in CD, LP and Digital on November 22, 2019.

 

Nilsson’s legacy — a body of work including “Everybody’s Talkin’,” “Without You,” “Coconut,” “Jump Into the Fire, “Spaceman,” and “I Guess the Lord Must Be in New York City” — has been bolstered in the last few years with the successful documentary Who Is Harry Nilsson (And Why Is Everybody Talkin’ About Him)? and the many, many usages of Harry’s songs in film and television including this year’s Netflix hit Russian Doll, which features Nilsson’s “Gotta Get Up” from his classic Nilsson Schmilsson album.

It’s been a little over 25 years since we’ve had one of “our conversations” and I can’t tell you how much I miss your wisdom, humor, passion, stories, and most of all . . . your music . . . NEW YORK, NY – JOEY MOLLAND of the band BADFINGER is currently in the studio working on a brand new release. He’s enlisted Grammy-winning songwriter/producer Mark Hudson and Grammy-winning engineer Mario J. McNulty to work on the album with him and is excited to share this latest project with his fans.

“I’ve wanted to make this album for several years now. The songs are solid and quite catchy – many harken back to that power pop/rock sound I began my career with.” – Joey Molland

Fans can find many ways to be a part of this special project through Joey's Kickstarter campaign which launched today.

Joey was a member of Badfinger’s classic line-up and the band was one of the original signings to the Beatles’ Apple Records label. They had their first hit single with a Paul McCartney penned song, "Come and Get It."  Badfinger followed this with their own hit compositions "No Matter What", "Day After Day" (produced by George Harrison), and "Baby Blue." During this time American singer Harry Nilsson placed Badfinger's song "Without You" on top of the charts, and Mariah Carey did the same in 1994. Badfinger's own version of "Without You" was featured in Season 2 of the hit television show This Is Us, which helped introduce the band's music to brand new younger fans.

The timeless quality of Badfinger songs is evident, as the songs continue to be used in many other contemporary TV and film soundtracks. The song "No Matter What" was featured in the hit film Horrible Bosses 2,  "Baby Blue" was featured in the Breaking Bad TV show finale, and "Day After Day" is currently featured in the movie Annabelle Comes Home.

Joey Molland played on John Lennon's Imagine album, on George Harrison’s Grammy-winning album All Things Must Pass, and joined George Harrison for the Concert For Bangladesh.

Producer Mark Hudson has worked extensively with artists such as Ringo Starr, Aerosmith, Ozzy Osbourne, Harry Nilsson, Bon Jovi, Alice Cooper, Celine Dion and more.

Engineer Mario J. McNulty has worked with many well-known artists, including David Bowie, Prince and Julian Lennon.

Both are excited to be working with Joey on his brand new release.
