Legends, hit makers showcased on new DVD/Blu-ray titles
What do the far-flung likes of the Rolling Stones, Katy Perry, Lenny Kravitz and Elliott Smith have in common? All are the focus of newly-issued films available now.
Artist: The Rolling Stones
Title: From the Vault: Live at the Tokyo Dome 1990 (Eagle Vision)
You might like if you enjoy: The Rolling Stones, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards
Tell me more: Rock fans wanting to see a Rolling Stones concert that captured the Brits at their best should check out the recent release From the Vault: Live at the Tokyo Dome 1990. Filmed during the Stones' 10-date run at the Tokyo Dome in 1990 where the band marked its first-ever live dates in Japan, the footage has been fully restored and the audio has been newly mixed by Bob Clearmountain to achieve something equaling the power of the 130-minute performance in front of 55,000 excited fans. The set list is truly perfect, balancing the band's best '60s and '70s classics with five standouts from the Stones' outstanding 1989 album Steel Wheels. The highlights come fast and furious including the soulful "The Harlem Shuffle" bolstered by the work of the Uptown Horns, the disco-rocker "Miss You" featuring Bobby Keys' terrific work on sax, the full-on rocker "Rock and a Hard Place," and an incredible performance of the band's masterwork "Gimme Shelter" with Mick Jagger and singer Cindy Mizelle trading potent lead vocals. Information: eagle-rock.com.

Artist: Lenny Kravitz
Title: Just Let Go: Lenny Kravitz Live (Eagle Vision)
You might like if you enjoy: Jimi Hendrix, Gary Clark Jr.
Tell me more: Just Let Go is far more than a concert film. Because while the title features Lenny Kravitz and his excellent band performing during a 2014 European tour, the DVD title (also available on Blu-ray and digital) offers a revealing look at the process that the rocker and his troupe prepare for a tour, and how playing concerts is an entirely different experience than recording in a studio. Director Paul Dugdale is able to deliver both the concert performances and interview segments with a unified vision. The performances sizzle; "Dirty White Boots" (with Kravitz tearing up on lead guitar), "American Woman," the funky "Dancin' Til Dawn," acoustic "Sister" and blistering version of "Are You Gonna Go My Way." Tell me more: Katy Perry has scored plenty of hits since the release of her 2008 album One of the Boys, but it are the singer-songwriter's extravagant concerts that impress most. So fans of the popular pop star will be thrilled with her concert film The Prismatic World Tour Live which offers a dazzling mix of music, theatrical effects, fearless acrobatics, eye-catching costumes and radio hits galore. Filmed in Sydney, Australia in December 2014, Perry and her cast of dancers and musicians are fully showcased across the seven-act production by director Russell Thomas. A popular songstress able to masterfully blend dance-minded disco pop with light rock, high points on the concert film include the animated "Roar," EDM-styled "Wide Awake," piano-anchored ballad "By the Grace of God" and sparkling "Firework." Tell me more: The first full-length documentary to ever explore the life and music of acclaimed singer-songwriter Elliott Smith (1969-2003), Heaven Adores You is as heartfelt and introspective as the song craft of its gone-too-soon subject. Utilizing a blend of gritty visual images of the locations he called home (primarily Portland, New York City and Los Angeles), performance video and audio of Smith, and interviews with those who knew him best, Heaven Adores You is a compelling portrait of Smith and his long artistic shadow. Even music fans not familiar with Smith will be impressed by his life story and excerpts from his original songs, including "Miss Misery," "Son Of Sam," "Happiness" and "Waltz #2." Austin City Limits showcases two amazing young talents: Gary Clark Jr. and Courtney Barnett
New Episode Premieres Oct. 31 on PBS
Austin, TX—October 30, 2015—Austin City Limits (ACL) showcases two of today’s most original and exciting live acts: Grammy-winning songwriter, vocalist and virtuoso guitarist Gary Clark Jr. in a triumphant return to the ACL stage, and singer-songwriter Courtney Barnett making her ACL debut. Two talked-about artists worthy of the buzz, both rising stars are gaining recognition around the globe for their dynamic live shows. They split the bill in a new episode premiering Saturday, October 31st at 8pm CT/9pm ET as part of ACL’s new Season 41 on PBS. ACL airs weekly on PBS stations nationwide (check local listings for times) and full episodes are made available online for a limited time at http://video.pbs.org/program/austin-city-limits/ immediately following the initial broadcast. The show's official hashtag is #acltv.
Austin’s shining star Gary Clark Jr. arrives on ACL’s stage at the top of his game for his second headline performance, this time showcasing songs from the acclaimed new top-10 album The Story of Sonny Boy Slim. The young Texan has had a whirlwind ascent from the Austin club scene to earning slots on festival stages, on the road with superstars Foo Fighters and his own sold-out headlining tour. The LA Times recently hailed him “the most exciting blues-based experimentalist since Jack White.” Clark writes another chapter to his story with this appearance, firmly establishing himself as a sonic force of nature in a confident, blazing five-song set filled with searing, soulful new songs. The guitar phenom opens with a new album highlight “Grinder” and demonstrates his astonishing musical chops with scorching renditions of the deeply personal originals. Closing the thrilling set with the uplifting, gospel-infused anthem “The Healing,” Clark sings with newfound passion, owning the ACL stage and receiving a heartfelt standing ovation.
Australian singer/songwriter and guitarist Courtney Barnett released one of the most arresting music debuts in years, 2015’s Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit, and is receiving critical acclaim in spades: Rolling Stonehails Barnett “one of rock’s most beguiling young stars and deftest lyricists,” calling the album “2015’s sharpest debut”. Paste says she’s “one of the most charming, whipsmart performers currently touring the world,” and NPR raves “the new album will thrill any fan of smart, biting guitar driven rock,” calling her “the best lyricist in rock music today.” Spin calls it “one of the most thrilling albums you’ll hear this year,” and hails the garage rocker a “goddamn rock star.” Riding the wave of media acclaim, Barnett proves she has the talent to match in her standout ACL debut. The six-song set is a great introduction to her signature style: straightforward, four-chord crunch, mixing witty, often hilarious, occasionally even heartbreaking observations with unflinching self-assessment. Aided by her tight band featuring bassist Bones Sloane and drummer Dave Mudie, she brings the ACL set to a crashing close with the crowd-favorite single “Pedestrian at Best,” proving she’s nothing of the sort, but one of the most distinctive and compelling new voices in modern rock.
"Gary Clark Jr. and Courtney Barnett are the rock stars of tomorrow, if not today, and they're doing it the old-fashioned way - with their guitars,” says ACL executive producer Terry Lickona. “They are both blazing different trails, but they are totally original, and that's why this makes for such a great double bill!"

Sights and Sounds: Leon Bridges, Ace Frehley tribute, Katy Perry
Here's a roundup of news and notes to land in my inbox today...
The two breakout tracks from soul revivalist and R&B singer-songwriter Leon Bridges, “Coming Home” and “Better Man”, have been added to digital retailers and can also now be streamed on VEVO.
Stream via VEVO: http://smarturl.it/ComingHomeStream
iTunes: http://smarturl.it/ComingHomeiT
Bridges' soul, R&B and gospel-influenced songs and clean, direct vocals have more than fairly earned him comparisons to Sam Cooke and Percy Sledge and landed him on NPRand NME’s Ones to Watch lists.
The two tracks, produced by Austin Jenkins and Josh Block of White Denim, have been riding multiple influencer media waves since making their debut last October. “Coming Home” specifically premiered on the influential site Gorilla Vs. Bear, which proclaimed, “…we can’t escape the promise of greatness we keep hearing in his timeless songs.” Through word of mouth, fans quickly and organically gravitated to Bridges’s well-crafted songs and honeyed voice.
Bridges, a trained choreographer with a background in dance, is bringing his energetic live show to the stage with a series of sold-out live shows, including a show at NYC’s Mercury Lounge on February 17th which sold out in less than one minute, and a show in Los Angeles at Hotel Café on February 24th.
