Tuesday, September 28, 2021 -- Today Ringo Starr released his new video “Let’s Change The World,” the lead single off his current EP Change The World.  The song and video deliver a welcome dose of hope and Starr’s trademark optimism. The song was written by Joseph Williams and Steve Lukather, both of whom also played on the track, with backing vocals by Amy Keys, Zelma Davis, Billy Valentine and Darryl Phinnessee.

Lukather also appears in the video, which was created in collaboration with Kids In The Spotlight, a nonprofit that provides a platform for foster care youth to tell their stories through film. These underserved youth write, cast, and star in their own short films, and the experiences help them to heal and grow, as well as to prepare and lay the groundwork for future employment opportunities.

“Let’s Change The World! I wanted to make this video with kids because they are our future and this is for them. They deserve clean water and fresh air. I believe we should leave this planet in better shape than we found it for our kids, and right now we are not doing that. Half the world is on fire and the other half is under water. We have got to change, and I believe we can. Peace and love, Ringo.”

KITS was the perfect organization to partner with to fulfill Ringo’s vision for the video. The kids were involved in the entire process, including a zoom meeting with Ringo where they discussed the concept and shared some of their ideas, such as using a huge screen displaying images, fire-fighters putting out fires, smoke machines, and showing how this video could become an anthem of acceptance and fighting the effects of global warming. On the shoot days, which took place in Los Angeles on location by Starr’s Peace Sculpture in Beverly Hills Park, and at the Standard Vision Studios in Glendale,  they were able to shadow and assist in all areas including directing, lighting, choreography and photography.

“The collaborative effort between Kids In The Spotlight and Ringo Starr to create the music video for “Let’s Change The World,” is a perfect example of the opportunities our organization strives to bring youth in foster care year round,” said KITS Executive Director, Tige Charity. “The experience our youth had in bringing Ringo Starr’s positive message to life through film and music is a memory they will have forever.”

Both during pre-production and on the production days, many of the kids contributed ideas for set-ups, wardrobe choices, etc. For instance, Santiago Chavez is a KITS youth and budding director, and shadowed the video’s director David Mahmoudieh on the shoot on the first day. Rodney Jackson-Brown, another KITS foster youth, is an aspiring writer and actor, who helped conceptualize and appeared in the video on both shoot days. (Rodney actually won the KITS National Foster Youth Screenwriting Contest with his script "Bully", which David Mahmoudieh also directed).

"I have been working with the foster youth of Kids In The Spotlight for the past six years now, watching so many of them come of age as actors, writers and future directors,” said director David Mahmoudieh. “KITS provides them with a truly transformative platform, where they can channel their experiences within the foster system and life in general into films that represent their identity. All of these kids have their own stories and KITS nurtures them into storytellers. I am continually blown away by the variety of unique voices in the program, and working with them on the ‘Let's Change The World’ music video demonstrated the kids' ability to apply their skills as storytellers to a whole new platform. One of the KITS affirmations is 'I can do great things, because I was created to do great things.' In Ringo and the positive message of his song, they found the perfect partner to do just that."

“These kids were so great to work with,” added Ringo. “I loved the way they jumped in and I think it turned out great. I want to thank each and every one of them for being so peace and loving and giving their all.”

Here is some more information on the KITS kids who participated and quotes from some of them about their experience:

“This music video is all about changing the world. Ringo is not enough to change the world, we’re not enough to change the world. It’s got to be all of us. You can change the world by doing it your own way. We can help people in need, homeless, people who are sick…. we can be 10 times stronger if we work together. I was so honored to work with KITS and Ringo on his music video, and I hope that everyone who watches it will do their part in changing the world for the better.” - Rodney Jackson-Brown, 23, KITS Program Participant.

“It was surreal having the chance to collaborate with Ringo, and I couldn’t believe that KITS and the director trusted me to help bring this music video to life. This video brings you nothing but joy, it brought me joy! Most of the time I’m sitting around sad, walking through my life sad. I just felt happy when I was there with Ringo and having him play his song with everyone dancing and jumping around.. there was no way that was real! Changing the world means peace, no violence… accepting others. I feel our biggest problem is acceptance. The more accepting you are the more at peace you are.” - Daniel Williams, 21, KITS Program Participant.

“As an aspiring artist, I always remember how KITS helped me believe that I was capable of achieving great things. Collaborating with Ringo Starr, a living legend, was a dream come true and proof that you can speak things into existence.” - Aliah Monae, 23, KITS Program Alumni.

“Giving our current circumstances with life right now, We all just need a good laugh, a good smile. That’s how I think people will feel listening to this.” - Daniel Williams, 21, KITS Program Participant.

“I want people to be nicer to the planet because it matters!” - Billy Jones, 22, KITS Program Participant.

TOTO celebrate "40 Trips Around The Sun" announce First Run of 2018 Dates & New Sony Album

This media release just landed in my inbox and is great news for fans of TOTO, especially the band's terrific 2015 album release TOTO XIV.

TOTO CELEBRATE “40 TRIPS AROUND THE SUN” ANNOUNCE FIRST RUN OF DATES &
NEW SONY ALBUM IN SUPPORT OF
40TH ANNIVERSARY IN 2018

New Album To Be Released On Sony Music’s Legacy Recordings Worldwide In February Of 2018 Will Contain Classic Remastered Hits Alongside Brand New Tracks

Los Angeles, CA --- TOTO is pleased to announce the first set of shows in support of the band’s 40th Anniversary beginning in 2018.  The 40 Trips Around The Sun Tour will begin in February 2018 in Europe.  The tour will be the band’s most extensive run in years and will be a worldwide tour to celebrate the band’s enduring career.  More shows will be announced shortly.

Along side the launch of the tour, TOTO along with Legacy Recordings have created a brand new Greatest Hits package. The album will feature brand new previously unreleased music along side newly remastered classic tracks worked on by Elliot Scheiner & Gavin Lurssen and his team.  The core Toto members, Steve Lukather, David Paich, Steve Porcaro, Joseph Williams re-entered the studio this past year to work on the material.  Full details on that album along side many other projects the band has in the works with Legacy Recordings will be announced at a later date.

“Myself, David, Steve and Joseph are humbled and thrilled at the long lasting success of the band,” Steve Lukather remarked.  “This 40th Anniversary tour is going to be a special one for us and all of the fans that come out.  On top of all that, it’s really exciting to be working with Sony Music again.  We’ve spent a lot of time this year working on new music and re-mastering the older tracks.”

Few ensembles in the history of recorded music have individually or collectively had a larger imprint on pop culture than the members of TOTO.  As individuals, the band members can be heard on an astonishing 5000 albums that together amass a sales history of a half a billion albums.  Amongst these recordings, NARAS applauded the performances with more than 200 Grammy nominations.

With close to 40 years together and literally thousands of credits, including the biggest selling album of all time: Michael Jackson’s Thriller, and accolades to their names, TOTO remains one of the top selling touring and recording acts in the world. They are the benchmark by which many artists base their sound and production, and they continue to transcend the standards set by the entire music community, being simply synonymous with musical credibility.  Their repertoire continues to be current via high profile usage on broadcast television.  They are pop culture, and are one of the few 70’s bands that have endured the changing trends and styles to a career enjoy a multi-generational worldwide fan base.

TOTO XIV out in North America today

Make sure to check Toto's highly-anticipated "Toto  XIV" out today. I've heard the album and it's fantastic (my full-length review will run in my syndicated column next week). Below is the official media release issued today in connection with the album's release in several different formats...

Toto's first studio album in ten years, TOTO XIV, is out today in North America.  Frontiers Music Srl has released it in Europe and Oceania as well.  The album will hit retail globally, with specific dates for territories in Asia, South America and others to follow.

Configurations for TOTO XIV include a CD, with a deluxe edition available featuring a "making of" documentary on DVD, expanded booklet that includes an in depth story and interview about the new album alongside exclusive pictures in ecol-book packaging. Additionally Toto XIV will be available as a 2LP vinyl set, and a Super Deluxe limited edition which includes the Deluxe CD/DVD edition, 2LP vinyl, an exclusive poster, t-shirt (large size only), and lithograph.

TOTO XIV is a realized vision three plus decades in the making exhibiting world-class musicianship, masterful arrangements, topical lyrical commentary, and melodies that the collective genius of Lukather, Paich, Porcaro, Williams and their assembled band-mates bring to life. TOTO XIV is the band’s first album of new material since 2006’s Falling In Between.  However, the band personally considers the new album to be the true follow-up to TOTO IV, which made the band global superstars.

Keyboardist Steve Porcaro reveals, "This is opposite of going through the motions.  We are treating this like it is Toto V, our follow-up to TOTO IV.  We just want to be the best version of ourselves that we can be.  Be true to ourselves and make the best music we can.  Entertain people which is what we were put on this Earth for."  Keyboardist David Paich reflects, "I think of TOTO as a unit and a band that carries a responsibility when it goes out there in to the public consciousness.   There is so much negativity and darkness that I think you have to be as Quincy Jones puts it, 'beams of light that blast through the darkness'."

As they began the process of a return the studio, all of the principle long-term members brought their A-game to the table.  Guitarist Steve "Luke" Lukather offers, "When you put us in a room, and everybody brings in their pieces, the next thing you know it all fits together. Everybody's performances are top notch.  We are really bringing our best out, forcing ourselves to make personal best choices, what's best for the music.  I'm really excited to hear what people think."  Singer Joseph Williams adds, "We are talking about a band where everybody is a writer, and everybody is a lead singer, and everybody is a player.  All involved brought this trio to the table where it could just live on its own."

The band will hit the ground running with an extensive European headline arena tour with appearances at key festivals. The itinerary begins in Glasgow on May 21, and takes Toto through the UK, France, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Poland, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Italy, and Belgium.  Ticket sales came out of the box with strength, with some appearances selling out within days of on-sale.  A North American tour will follow in the summer of 2015.  The band is also in the planning stages for their return to Asia later this year.

The last couple of years have been active, with a seven show sold-out tour of Asia that took them through Nagoya, Osaka, Tokyo, Sendai and Sapporo in April, 2014.  Also that month, the 35th Anniversary Tour - Live In Poland title was released, debuting at #1 in territories across the globe.  Last August and September, the band hit the road travelling across North America as co-headliners with Michael McDonald, which when it was all said and done was their most comprehensive tour on the continent in years.
