Catching up on 2021 gems: 'West Side Story Soundtrack,' Chuck Berry, Inhaler, Legendary Shack Shakers, Sara Petite

Here are a handful of 2021 releases I somehow missed featuring in my column last year that are worth hearing.

Title: West Side Story -- Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Hollywood Records)

You might like if you enjoy: West Side Story, composer Leonard Bernstein, Broadway musicals

Tell me more: One of the standout films of 2021, director Steven Spielberg's "West Side Story" has come out as an outstanding companion 21-track soundtrack. Featuring music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, "West Side Story" is widely regarded as a a groundbreaking musical because of the creators' advances in music as well as bringing a gritty realism to musical theater upon its release in the late 1950s. Vocals on the soundtrack are provided by the stars of the new film, including Ansel Elgort, Rachael Zegler, Ariana DeBose, David Alvarez, Mike Faist and Rita Morena — the latter who played Anita in the 1961 film adaption. The powerful on-screen performances by the cast translate well on the audio CD. Gustavo Dudamel conducted the New York Philharmonic Orchestra during 2019, with additional recording completed by the Los Angeles Philharmonic during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The mix of jazz, Latin rhythms, classical orchestrations and broadway sensibilities is a delight across the soundtrack. The fully-illustrated booklet features photographs from the film, lyrics for the songs and liner notes from music consultant John Williams.

Title: Live from Blueberry Hill (Dualtone Records)

You might like if you enjoy: Chuck Berry

Tell me more: Pulled from live performances recorded at the 340-person capacity St. Louis venue Blueberry Hill between July 2005 and January 2006, Chuck Berry's Live from Blueberry Hill is a wonderful way to rediscover the Father of Rock & Roll. There is a joyful spirit across this collection of live tracks (Berry passed away at the age of 90 in March 2017). The freewheeling "Roll Over Beethoven," driving "Let It Rock" (featuring his daughter Ingrid Berry blasting away on harmonica), the spirited "Carol"/"Little Queenie" medley, rollicking "Around And Around" and disc-ending rocker "Johnny B. Goode" are among the terrific tracks on the album. "Bio" is a fascinating bluesy track where Berry poetically recalls his modest roots and magical rise. Information: Dualtone.com.

Title: It Won't Always Be Like This (Interscope)

You might like if you enjoy: U2, Simple Minds, Keane

Tell me more: Fans of U2, Keane and Coldplay will love Inhaler's debut album It Won't Always Be Like This. Featuring singer-guitarist Elijah Hewson (the son of U2 lead singer Bono), bassist Robert Keating, guitarist Josh Jenkinson and drummer Ryan McMahon, the Irish band delivers an album filled with winning and soaring anthems. The propulsive "My Honest Face," reflective "Slide Out The Window," bouncy "Cheer Up Baby" and expansive "My King Will Be Kind" are early disc nuggets. The album's power continues via late standouts "When It Breaks," "Totally," "Who's Your Money On? (Plastic House)" and "In My Sleep." Released in July 2021, the album entered the Irish Albums Chart and the UK Album Chart at number one. Information: www.inhaler.band.

Title: Cockadoodledeux (Alternative Tentacles Records)

Tell me more: Celebrating a 25 year run, J.D. Wilkes wanted to go all out to mark his Legendary Shack Shakers troupe on Cockadoodledeux. The 12-track set takes the listener on a tour of styles from across the country and Americana sonic universe. In addition to Wilkes, the talents of band mates guitarist Gary Siperko, bassist Fuller Condon and drummer Preston Corn are featured; notable guests include Jello Biafra, Chris Scruggs (Marty Stuart's Fabulous Superlatives), Cajun fiddler "Hillbilly" Bob Prather, dobroist Jack Martin and bassist Morgan Jahnig (Old Crow Medicine Show). The psychedelia meets spaghetti western-flavored cover of "Rawhide," Western swing nuggets "Tickle Yore Innards" and "I Told You So," Texas-fried "Godforsaken Town," tender "They Won't Let Me Forget (All The Things I Can't Recall)," wry "I Don't Remember Loving You" and Celtic-tinged closer "Farewell Ye Rovin' Eyed Girls" are among the fantastic tracks on the album. Title: Rare Bird (JTM Music)

You might like if you enjoy: Rosanne Cash, Whitney Rose, Brandi Carlile

Tell me more: Released in early 2021, songstress Sara Petite's sixth album Rare Bird magically delivers a batch of songs wrapped up with a perfect mix of heartland rock and Americana — each song bolstered by musical grace and bona fide power. There is a depth here that is the equal of the seasoned songcraft and nuanced arrangements found on all 11 of the album's tracks. The mystery and immediacy of love takes center stage on "Feeling Like an Angel." The wonderfully confessional acoustic rock foray "Scars" finds the artist revealing "I've learned to live with me." The tender "Floating with the Angels" is adorned by pedal steel and fiddle. Other standouts on the LP include the heartfelt "I Just Keep Moving On," rocking "The Misfits" and genre-defying "Working on a Soul." Information: SaraPetite.com.

Whether you enjoy listening to soundtracks for a favorite film or watching a cult TV show that combined a love for all things pop culture, there are a score of recommended new titles available now.

DVD Title: Mystery Science Theater 3000: Vol. XXXIX (Shout! Factory)

Tell me more: Likely the final collection of new episodes from the original run of Mystery Science Theater 3000 that ended after 10 seasons in 1999, Mystery Science Theater 3000: Vol. XXXIX delivers intelligent wit and laughs at every turn. The box set includes the final three available episodes previously unreleased by Shout! Factory ("Girls Town," "The Amazing Transparent Man" and "Diabolik"); throughout the series, musical references and songs were among the key elements of the television series. For example, on a single episode here, references or sung bits linked to Pink Floyd, Gregg Allman, David Cassidy, the Troggs' "Wild Thing," the Beach Boys' "Surfin' Safari" and The Beatles help enhance the B-movie viewing. One of the extras, "Showdown in Eden Prairie: The Final Experiment" takes an in-depth look at the production of the final episode ("Diabolik") of the series' original run, including interviews with the cast and key production members. Another must-see extra is titled "The Last Dance" and it includes raw behind-the-scenes video footage taken on the set during the production of "Diabolik." Of course, the cult show has returned with creator Joel Hodgson and a new cast; new episodes began airing on Netflix in 2017 and another season of episodes are being produced now. Title: The Post: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Sony Classical)

Tell me more: Although composer John Williams is best known for his signature music for franchise winning "Star Wars," "Raiders of the Lost Ark," "Jaws," "Jurassic Park" and "Harry Potter" films, his music seldom fails to impress no matter the genre. Just listen to the 85-year-old master's work on The Post: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, which includes the beautifully tense "The Presses Roll," disquieting "Nixon's Order," jazzy piano-anchored "The Oak Room, 1971" and alluring "Mother and Daughter" to appreciate the nuanced and stylish handiwork of Williams. The 12-page booklet that accompanies the soundtrack includes a short overview on Williams' approach and strength in scoring for "The Post," as well as a number of photos from the film and a listing of the many talented members of the orchestra who performed under the baton of Williams. Title: Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Varèse Sarabande Records)

Tell me more: A strong blend of instrumental music composed by Carter Burwell and artful mix of songs delivered by the celebrated likes of Monsters Of Folk, folk singer Joan Baez and Motown's The Four Tops make for an eclectic listen across the Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack. The winner of the Best Motion Picture - Drama at the 75th Golden Globe Awards, "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" is enhanced by Burwell's wonderfully evocative music. The Americana-styled "Mildred Goes To War," lovely keyboard-adorned "The Deer" and the foreboding "A Cough of Blood, A Dark Drive" are among Burwell's affecting compositions heard here. Title: Ben-Hur: World Premiere Digital Recording of the Complete Film Score (Tadlow Music)

Tell me more: The 1959 film "Ben-Hur" stands as one of Hollywood's greatest-ever films but the Academy Award winner's complete 157-minute score has only recently been released via a world premiere digital recording performed by the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra & Chorus, and conducted by Nic Raine. The ambitious score was originally composed by Miklós Rózsa and ultimately proved to be the longest original score composed and recorded for any film of the 20th century. The new "World Premiere Digital Recording of the Complete Film Score" is an important and crucial release. Information: tadlowmusic.com.

Title: Deluxe Edition: Music from the Motion Picture Popeye (Varèse Sarabande Records)

Tell me more: This writer somehow missed the essential, expanded edition reissue of the soundtrack for the 1980 film Popeye  when it was released in September 2017. The good news is that no matter when listeners discover this fantastic soundtrack, they will not be disappointed. The first disc of this 2-CD title features original music and songs from the film, while the second disc includes demo versions written by noted singer-songwriter Harry Nilsson. Two of those songs ("Everybody's Got To Eat" and "I'd Rather Be Me") presented on that second disc were never released prior to this special edition. Fans of the film's stars (Robin Williams, Shelley Duvall, Ray Walston) will enjoy the famed actors featured in the musical selections. formation: VareseSarabande.com.

Title: Gold - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Varèse Sarabande Records)
Tell me more: With the Golden Globe-nominated original title song from groundbreaking Iggy Pop leading off the disc, the Gold soundtrack mines similar territory for a sonic journey that enhances the Matthew McConaughey-starring 2017 film; the lineup of cuts also works perfectly as a stand-alone collection of great songs. The rousing little-heard rocker "Ron Klaus Wrecked His House" (from Big Dipper), a cover of David Byrne's "This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody)" performed by Kishi Bashi and inviting gems from New Order ("Temptation"), Joy Division ("Atmosphere") and Television ("1880 Or So") are among memorable songs on the set. Title: Raiders of the Lost Ark (Concord Records)
Composer: John Williams
Tell me more: Released on 180-gram vinyl pressed at RTI (Record Technology Incorporated), the two-LP album version of John Williams' Raiders of the Lost Ark sounds better than ever. Released back on June 2, 2017, this new vinyl version of the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack is housed in a two-pocket gatefold jacket featuring original stills and artwork from the 1981 action film starring actor Harrison Ford. For fans of the talented Williams and of "Raiders of the Ark" in particular, this wonderful title includes audio cues not previously available on the original soundtrack LP. This version of the album follows the track list of the 2008 expanded edition, previously only available on CD. Information: ConcordMusicGroup.com.

Title: Battle of the Sexes (Sony Classical)
Composer: Nicholas Britell; songs by Sara Bareilles, Elton John, George Harrison, more
Tell me more: From the opening track (Alfred Newman's iconic music that greets the opening of any 20th Century Fox film) to composer Nicholas Britell's title themes for the main characters ("Billie Jean King" and "Bobby Riggs") and a mix of , the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack for Battle of the Sexes really immerses the listener in the feel of the characters and story of the fabled 1973 tennis match between women's world champion Billie Jean King (played by Emma Stone) and ex-men's champion Bobby Riggs (portrayed by actor Steve Carell). Even if you haven't yet seen the Jonathan Dayton & Valerie Faris-directed "The Battle of the Sexes," the score is a wonderful listen. And the mix of affecting songs also works, particularly the classic George Harrison cut "What Is Life" and new gem written and performed for the film "If I Dare" by songstress Sara Bareilles. Title: Tulip Fever (Sony Classical)
Composer: Danny Elfman
Tell me more: Those who love the whimsical side of composer Danny Elfman's personality (think of his unforgettable scores for Pee-wee's Big Adventure and The Nightmare Before Christmas), as well as his more nuanced and romantic personality (as evidenced by his work on the Oscar-nominated Big Fish and Good Will Hunting) will find both on center stage on his potent work on the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack of Tulip Fever. The lovely "Maria's Theme," "Lost" and "It's Done" display a nuanced touch perfect for the romantic heart of "Tulip Fever" (the film is based on the best-selling novel by Deborah Moggach), while the distant "The Unveiling" and sweeping "A Storm is Coming" explore other musical corners to bring additional depth to the score. Composer: W.G. Snuffy Walden 
Tell me more: If you are thinking of holding off on a decision to purchase the limited edition audio CD release of composer W.G. Snuffy Walden's The West Wing, don't. The 6th installment of Varèse Sarabande Records' "We Hear You" series, the Original Television Soundtrack for the groundbreaking TV series The West Wing is a 2-CD set and will be limited to 2,000 units. Walden won the Emmy for the timeless Outstanding Original Main Title - Theme Music (the Aaron Sorkin-created series was nominated for 18 Emmy Award at the end of its debut season in 2000, and won nine including Best Drama Series). Tell me more: Grammy and Academy Award-winning composer Michael Giacchino has scored a number of memorable soundtracks, so it's no surprise he once again had plenty of symphonic magic to add courtesy of the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack of the 2017 summer blockbuster War for the Planet of the Apes. Whether mining tense moments ("Assault of the Earth," "Don't Luca Now"), showcasing the dramatic ("The Bad Ape Bagatelle") or enhancing more tender moments in a film ("Exodus Wounds," "Koba Dependent"), Giacchino's lavish work shines across the powerful score. Title: Original London Cast Recording of Dreamgirls (Masterworks Broadway)

Tell me more: If you are one of the countless fans who have seen or plan to see the musical production of Dreamgirls playing at the Savoy Theatre in London through June 2, 2018, get the "Original London Cast Recording of Dreamgirls." Recorded live at the Savoy Theatre in February 2017, the 2-CD release features the cast and 14-member band performing the entire show and includes rousing versions of memorable songs such as "One Night Only," "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going" and "Listen." Title: Hello, Dolly! 2017 Broadway Cast Recording (Masterworks Broadway)

Tell me more: The new Broadway Cast Recording of Hello, Dolly! features three-time Grammy Award-winning singer-actress Bette Midler in the title role of Dolly Gallagher Levi. Having premiered earlier this year on Broadway, the excellent cast recording features 16 tracks featuring not only Midler but Emmy Award winner David Hyde Pierce (as Horace Vandergelder), two-time Tony Award nominee Gavin Creel (Cornelius Hackl), Kate Baldwin (Irene Molloy), Melanie Moore (Ermengarde), Jennifer Simard (Ernestina) and Will Burton (Ambrose Kemper). Tell me more: With a mix of original songs written specifically for the Broadway musical, as well as several classic tracks (including the dazzling David Bowie/Brian Eno collaboration "No Control"), SpongeBob SquarePants — The New Musical is sheer fun. The range of material matches the zany spirit of the "SpongeBob SquarePants" world. Contributing songs that complete the hero's tale where SpongeBob SquarePants seeks to save Bikini Bottom includes the decidedly Americana-tinged "BFF" (written by Plain White T's), electronica-dance "(Just a) Simple Sponge" (penned by Panic! At the Disco), theatrical "Daddy Knows Best" (penned by Alex Ebert of Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros), the beautiful "Tomorrow Is" (by The Flaming Lips) and spirited "Poor Pirates" (by Sara Bareilles). SpongeBob SquarePants — The New Musical began its run at the Palace Theater on Broadway on Nov. 6, 2017. Soundtracks highlight exotic scores

In addition, the recently-issued movie score for Wheeler that includes a noteworthy contribution from the legendary Kris Kristofferson, and a Marvel-ous Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2-related title, a number of other cinema-minded titles are worth discovering.

Title: Wheeler (Varèse Sarabande Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Kris Kristofferson, Chris Stapleton
Tell me more: The 2017 film Wheeler chronicles the tale of a musician who travels from the small town of Kaufman, Texas to Nashville with dreams of playing country music. Fans of country music hit makers such as Tim McGraw will enjoy the material on the first-rate Wheeler soundtrack, notably the infectious "Pour Me Out of This Town," tender "Rainbow Slide" and poignant "Fever." Singer-songwriter Stephen Dorff (Wheeler Lynn Bryson) has delivered a full-range of strong songs that will appeal to fans of authentic country and acoustic-flavored Americana. As a bonus, Kris Kristofferson (who appears in the "Wheeler" film) delivers "New Mister Me," a tuneful piano-anchored gem. Information: VareseSarabande.com.

Title: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2: Awesome Mix Vol. 2 (Marvel Music/Hollywood Records)
You might like if you enjoy: ELO, Cheap Trick, Cat Stevens
Tell me more: Anyone who has seen Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 in theaters knows how integral the winning score from Tyler Bates is to the on-screen action. But even more pronounced is the inclusion of select '70s rock and pop songs to arc of the story. Indeed, when the Grammy-nominated Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack reached No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart in 2014, it became the first soundtrack album consisting entirely of previously released songs to top the chart. The new Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2: Awesome Mix Vol. 2 captures the magic of the earlier set thanks to a batch of great songs from a diverse field of artists that film director James Gunn specifically positioned to propel his entertaining script. You might like if you enjoy: Hans Zimmer, Brian Tyler's "Guardians of the Galaxy" and "Watchmen" scores
Tell me more: The burgeoning number of superhero films and hit television series' has been a boon for great scores. Listen no further than Brian Tyler's terrific and powerful symphonic work on Power Rangers (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack). Even if you haven't seen the "Power Rangers" film, the haunting "Seek Those Who Are Worthy" and "Confessions," and tense "Megazord" and "Destiny" will stir your soul. The modern pop/R&B dance tune "Give It All" featuring rapper Vince Staples is also included on the release. Information: VareseSarabande.com.

You might like if you enjoy: Hans Karl, Zero 7, Dead Can Dance
Tell me more: Bosch (Music From the Amazon Original Series) is just a cool collection of 44 tracks that delve into jazz, neo-classical and world music. Kicking off with "Can't Let Go" by Caught A Ghost, that song swirls and mixes stylings from the '60s to modern day. Most of the collection features Jesse Voccia's stunning work, including the unsettling but lovely "End of Watch" and "Cabin Fever." "Rodeo" is a particularly interesting piece with a mix of sparse percussion and a pronounced phased effect emphasizing rhythm over the underlying melody.  "Kidnapped" mixes acoustic and electronica elements for a thrilling three-minute run. You might like if you enjoy: Rachel Portman
Tell me more: British composer Rachel Portman's Their Finest (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) is a beautiful and affecting score that equals her elequent work stretching back to her Academy Award-winning score for Emma in 1996 and more recent The Cider House Rules (1999) and Chocolat (2000). The 19-track score also includes several songs featured in the British film; both "They Can't Block Out the Moon" and "Will You Go, Lassie,Go" (the latter a beautiful piece featuring actor Bill Nighy) appear on the 35-minute collection. February 16, 2017 - Celebrating one of the most definitive and beloved partnerships in the history of motion pictures, John Williams & Steven Spielberg: The Ultimate Collection delivers an essential sampling of Williams's musical scores for Spielberg's films - a critically acclaimed, award-winning, chart-topping collaboration now in its fifth decade. Comprised of a three-CD set and bonus DVD, John Williams & Steven Spielberg: The Ultimate Collection is available from Sony Classical on March 17, 2017.

 

This collection brings together Williams's two previous discs of his music for Spielberg films, which he recorded with the Boston Pops Orchestra for Sony Classical: The Spielberg/Williams Collaboration (1991) and Williams on Williams: The Classic Spielberg Scores (1995). Those discs include music from Sugarland Express (1974) through Jurassic Park and Schindler's List (1993).

 

Bringing the collection up to date is an all-new third disc, recorded in 2016 with Williams conducting the Recording Arts Orchestra of Los Angeles, and with Spielberg as executive producer. It features the first release of brand new recordings of music from Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Amistad, The BFG, Lincoln, The Adventures of Tintin, Minority Report, Catch Me If You Can, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Saving Private Ryan, War Horse, The Terminal, Munich and Spielberg's 1999 documentary The Unfinished Journey.

 

The bonus DVD that accompanies this new three-CD collection presents Steven Spielberg & John Williams: The Adventure Continues, a new documentary by filmmaker and film historian Laurent Bouzereau, who has been documenting Spielberg's work for more than twenty years.

 

"I was very happy with the fact that when I was music director of Boston Pops, we were able to record a lot of the music that I'd written for Steven's films," Williams said about the first two discs in the collection. "So I said to him, 'Steven, wouldn't it be great if we could complete the Sony collection and put in all the things that we didn't have when the last disc was recorded, this time with our great orchestra here in Los Angeles?'  To which Steven responded, 'This is a great idea. Let's do it!'"

 

When Steven Spielberg made his first theatrical feature The Sugarland Express (1974), he sought John Williams to compose the score. With two exceptions, all of Spielberg's films have featured a Williams score. "Oh, this has been a great adventure," Spielberg tells Williams at the end of Bouzereau's film. "This has been a greater adventure than all theIndiana Jones movies put together for me ... It's been an honor for me to work all these years with John and to have his friendship, his partnership, his brotherhood. When we made Sugarland Express, we didn't realize we'd set our paths to be partners and friends for the rest of our lives."

 

In his ongoing career, now in its sixth decade, Williams has won five Academy Awards (three for Spielberg films), seven BAFTA (British Film Academy) awards, four Golden Globes, and twenty-two Grammy Awards for his film scores. His fifty Academy Award nominations, as of 2017, are a record among composers, and he is second only to Walt Disney in holding the most Academy Award nominations by an individual artist.  Fifteen of those nominations are for scores from Spielberg films.
