The Pretenders are back with today’s premiere of the optimistically charged new single, “Let The Sun Come In,” available now via Rhino Records – the band’s return to Warner Music Group after more than two decades having first been signed to Sire Records in America by the legendary Seymour Stein.   Marked by the electrifying impulsiveness and attitude that has long defined founder Chrissie Hynde’s eternal spirit, “Let The Sun Come In” heralds the eagerly awaited arrival of The Pretenders’ new studio album, Relentless, arriving everywhere on Friday, September 1. New Music: Micky Dolenz, Chrissie Hynde, Tribute to Pink Floyd's 'Wish You Were Here', The Daybreaks, Thundermother

A trio of highly-anticipated full-length tributes take center stage in my latest column, while a wonderful reissue of Heart singer Ann Wilson's earliest band The Daybreaks and a deluxe edition of a relatively-recent album from a rising Swedish hard rock band are also definitely worth discovering.

Title: Dolenz Sings Nesmith (7a Records)

Tell me more: The Monkees' amazing 55-year story continues with the long-awaited release of Dolenz Sings Nesmith, a 14-song set where lead vocalist Micky Dolenz covers top-tier material penned by Michael Nesmith. Dolenz – who sang many of the Monkees' most beloved hits (including "Last Train to Clarksville," "Pleasant Valley Sunday," "Mary, Mary" and "Randy Scouse Git") – revisits a slew of great songs from his good friend and the band's most notable songwriter; these are songs that were previously sung by Nesmith with the Monkees or via his subsequent solo career, and all receive decidedly different arrangements courtesy of Michael Nesmith's son Christian Nesmith (who produced the essential set recorded between September 2020 and February 2021). "Different Drum" (a hit for Linda Ronstadt and The Stone Poneys in 1967) receives an upbeat, harmonica-adorned romp. The explosive Americana-styled "Propinquity (I've Just Begun to Care)" is an exuberant celebration of love that showcases Dolenz's signature vocals (which sound as great as ever). Equally powerful but tapping into '60s garage rock stylings is the driving "Little Red Rider." Other standouts abound on "Dolenz Sings Nesmith"; the beautiful acoustic gem "Only Bound," joyful Indian classical-flavored "Circle Sky," shimmering "Marie's Theme" and countrified "Don't Wait for Me." Tell me more: There is a reason that Bob Dylan – who celebrates his 80th birthday on May 24, 2021 – is one of the most celebrated and covered songwriters in the history of modern music; his songs have a poetry, timelessness and literate power that is instantly palpable. Listening to the majestic Standing in the Doorway: Chrissie Hynde Sings Bob Dylan is to celebrate the art of Robert Zimmerman's brilliance with the added bonus of singer-guitarist Chrissie Hynde bringing her own signature vocal style and interpretive firepower to the nine-track collection. Tell me more: Pink Floyd's 1975 studio album Wish You Were Here obviously has its musical admirers. On the new full-length tribute to the album ("Still Wish You Were Here"), a who's who of rock greats contribute to revisiting the masterwork in its entirety. On the expansive opener "Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts 1-5)," singer Geoff Tate (Queensrÿche), guitarist Steve Hackett (Genesis), keyboardist Geoff Downes (Yes, ASIA), drummer Ian Paice (Deep Purple), flautist-saxophonist Mel Collins (King Crimson) and bassist Billy Sheehan join forces to bring the dreamy selection fully to life. On the forceful "Welcome to the Machine," singer-guitarist Todd Rundgren, keyboardist Rick Wakeman and bassist Tony Levin elevate the atmospheric favorite. Tell me more: Before Ann Wilson formed the band Heart with her sister (guitarist Nancy Wilson), the singer got her start in the late '60s with The Daybreaks. Now an EP of previously-unheard recordings from The Daybreaks has been released by Wilson . A fascinating and enjoyable listen, the EP includes the uptempo '60s-mining "Through Eyes and Glass," evocative chamber pop ballad "Standing Watching You," the bluesy "I'm Gonna Drink My Hurt Away" and Americana "Wonder How I Managed." Tell me more: When it comes to the sound of '70s and '80s hard rock, things have come full circle in 2021 resulting in the explosion of interest in young bands including American outfits Dirty Honey, The Record Company, the Pretty Reckless and Greta Van Fleet. Add to that list growing acclaim for an all-female rock quartet from Sweden, Thundermother. The band's most recent album, Heat Wave, was released in July 2020 and did so well around the world that AFM Records released an expanded edition of the album that includes 10 previously-unreleased tracks along with the original track listing. This is a band whose ferocious sound and tight musical chops recall a cross between Back in Black-era AC/DC and early Scorpions (just listen to lead singer Guernica Mancini whose vocals are the equal of a young Klaus Meine). The material here is not always aimed at exploring new ground but Thundermother's hard-edged rock attack is so infectious the band's sound can't be denied. Highlights include the AC/DC-styled "Dog From Hell" and "Ghosts" (guitarist Filippa Nässil's fret work often recalls Angus Young), head-banging "Back in '76," rapid-fire heavy metal charge "Into The Mud" (showcasing the rhythm section of drummer Emlee Johansson and bassist Majsan Lindberg), the textured rock ballad "Sleep," and scorching "Driving In Style." The blues-rock original "Purple Sky" and meteoric melodic rocker "The Road Is Ours" are noteworthy for pushing the band's sound forward. Produced by the legendary Stephen Street (The Smiths, Blur), HATE FOR SALE features 10 new songs written by Chrissie Hynde and Pretenders guitarist James Walbourne – their first full-length songwriting collaboration to date. Furthermore, the album – which follows 2016’s acclaimed ALONE – marks the first Pretenders album to feature the band’s longtime touring line-up of Hynde, Walbourne, bassist Nick Wilkinson, and founding drummer Martin Chambers.

Summertime Heats Up Via New Releases

A wide range of outstanding releases are helping heat up the summer, including a surprise stunner from Gorillaz, an outstanding sophomore album from the Rails, the third LP from New York-based artist Vincent Poag and a historic live release from guitar great Dennis Coffey.

You might like if you enjoy: Gorillaz, Damon Albarn's "Everyday Robots"
Tell me more: On the brilliant new Gorillaz release The Now Now, singer-songwriter Damon Albarn has essentially followed up his 2014 release Everyday Robots with a sequel of sorts; the new disc is intoxicating musically even while offering a lyrically-impactful search for finding one's self in a world - America in particular — where people seem to be more alone than ever. Whereas 2017's Gorillaz return Humanz was packed with all-star guests ranging from Mavis Staples and Grace Jones to Popcaan across the track list, The Now Now is a decidedly more intimate and stronger affair. A soundscape paved with cool beats, retro synths and grooves surrounding Albarn's signature vocals, the 11-track disc includes the breezy "Humility" (featuring jazz guitarist George Benson's shining fretwork), the '80s-mining "Tranz," infectious "Lake Zurich," distant "Magic City" (complete with Blur guitarist Graham Coxon's flourishes) and the enthralling "One Percent." Title: Other People (Thirty Tigers)
You might like if you enjoy: Carbon Leaf, Bright Blue Gorilla
Tell me more: It's so clear; the Rails get it. Other People, the latest release from the London-based duo comprised of Kami Thompson (daughter of Linda and Richard Thompson) and James Walbourne (his performance credits include the celebrated likes of the Pretenders, Son Volt and Ray Davies) is a disc that will impress on a single listen even while revealing ever-growing lyrical and sonic layers with subsequent listens. There are tracks rooted in traditional Irish folk sounds ("The Cally," "Other People"), indie roots rockers ("Late Surrender," "Brick And Mortar") and Americana folk ("Drowned in Blue," "Mansion Of Happiness") — all lushly arranged and emotionally truthful. Beyond their talents as top-tier musicians, the duo's secret weapon may well be that Thompson and Walbourne each have amazing and distinctive voices and are able to create a magical third voice when they sing together (just listen to the affecting "Dark Times," wistful "Leaving The Land" and tender "I Wish, I Wish"). You might like if you enjoy: Tom Waits, John Prine, Bob Dylan
Tell me more: Based in New York City, singer-songwriter-guitarist Vincent Poag uses his rich baritone to deliver original material that taps into his observations inspired by both a look inward as well as studies directed outward toward the big world around him. On his newly-issued third album Heroes and Demons, there is a straightforward lyrical approach enhanced by creative songwriting in the tradition of American favorites including Randy Newman, Bob Dylan and John Prine. Whether delivering a front-and-center appreciation of life itself ("Beautiful Day") in uncertain times like theses, or tapping into the jangly pop rock of Tom Petty ("Young Again") and utilizing a retro jazzy backdrop on the winning "One Step Ahead of Gloom," Poag's style allows him to weave a number of genres into a singular sound. The Waterboys-flavored "Piper Play" is this writer's favorite; the nugget recalls some of Mike Scott's most Celtic-drenched treasures with a luxurious moodscape enhanced by Irish flute, mandolin, fiddle and accordion. Tell me more: Listening to the power and inventiveness of Dennis Coffey's One Night at Morey's, it's hard to believe the live performance featuring Coffey on guitar, organist Lyman Woodard and drummer Melvin Davis was recorded 50 years ago. The power and range of the trio is breathtaking; the three musicians blend jazz, funk, R&B and rock via a freewheeling approach that showcases the trio's virtuoso chops and creative chemistry. The instrumental reworking of The Beatles' "Eleanor Rigby" plays out over a fast-moving 13+ minutes! The Meters' "Cissy Strut" is buoyant, with the rhythmic groove a launching pad for flat-out masterful lead guitar work courtesy of Coffey. Those looking for some flat-out killer lead guitar work from Coffey can check out "Burning Spear," where the speed of his runs thrills. A version of the Young Rascals' "Groovin' " certainly serves as the perfect groove for the trio, with all three musicians offering up some outstanding musicianship — all of it nuanced and presented in the service of the piece itself.
